He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared t he warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.”The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be both ered by it.”The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.”The mouse turned to the c ow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?”So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching i ts prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. Hiswife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the far mer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.21. We may infer that the passage is most probably a ______.A. fairy taleB. fableC. science fictionD. news report22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The pig was comparatively less friendly than the others in the farmyard.B. The mouse trap that the mouse discovered was not a practical one.C. The farmer and his wife trapped an evil snake that night.D. The farmer’s family was in fact poor and they had no friends.24. The underlined wor d “ingredient” (Paragraph 7) refers to ______.A. the mouseB. the pigC. the snakeD. the chickenBIt might sound unbelievable that two kids under the age of ten would choose to hang out at a hotel instead of going to Disney World, just minutes away, but that’s exactly what happened when we visited the new Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort last month. What kind of a hotel makes kids forget about Disney World?Check In: As I was signing the necessary paperwork at the front desk, my kids were taken away by Wayne, the receptionist, to a large interactive map of the resort in the entrance hall. Wayne used the touch screen to show the kids the entire resort and talked about all of the fun things to do, like the kid’s cl ub, the waterslides, and the game room. I’ve never seen so much attention paid to the kids at check-in — such a cool touch. The Room: Not only were there ki d-sized robes in the room, there were play things, NatGeo Kids magazines, chocolate lollypops, and milk chilling in the refrigerator. Plus, the room was designed from a family perspective. The sinks and shower settings were easily reachable, and the king bed and very comfortable sofa pull-out could easily fit a family of four, if not five. We had plenty of room. The Pools: There’s a large shallow infinity pool. There’s a meandering lazy river. There’s a water park. There’s an area for pool volleyball and basketball. And there are two very fun waterslides. We spent many hours roaming among them all, and just hanging out in a private teepee-shaped cabana next to the waterslides. So fun!No Surcharges: There’s no resort fee. If you want to use one of the cool cabanas around the pools, it’s included. For the kids club, you can use it as much or as little as you want to and the Hideout game room has a lot of activities, like pinball, at no cost. We took advantage of pretty much everything around the hotel except for the spa, and our final bill only showed our room charges, taxes, and meals. And if my kids were still under five, their meals would have been free.25. The passage is written by the author mainly to ________.A. advertise a hotel at Walt Disney World Resor tB. introduce the good service Walt Disney providesC. recall the experience that they once had in a hotelD. share information about a hotel near Disney World26. Customers don’t need to pay for ________ when they stay in the hotel.A. cool cabanasB. roomsC. the spaD. taxes27. What can we learn from the passage?A.The hotel isn’t an ideal choic e for a family of more than four.B. The two kids of the author should have been over five years old.C. The author spent hours playing pool volleyball and basketball.D. The receptionist showed children around Disney World Resort.CThe terrible college entrance exam is not only a big challenge for Chinese highschool students, but also a very important exam in the lives of South Korean students.Although the long, cold winter has already started in South Korea, the annual (一年一度的) national exams have made the atmosphere very heated.More than 675,000 South Korean high school graduates took the college entrance exam last Wednesday. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the Loilet, after cleaning a baby and before .touching food.Global Hand Washing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Hand Washing with Soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germs (病菌).They say the correct way to wash hands is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, rinse well under running water. It certainly makes sense that handling a market shift or anything alike require intelligence. But new research on leadership suggests that, at a certain point, having a higher IQ stops helping and starts hurting.Although previous research has shown that groups with smarter leaders perform better by objective measures, some studies have suggested that followers might subjectively view leaders with extremely high intellect as less effective. Decades ago, Dean Simonton, a psychologist from the University of California, Davis, proposed that brilliant leaders' words may simply go over people's heads, their solutions could be more complicated to carry out and followers might find it harder to relate to them. Now Simonton and two colleagues have finally tested that idea, publishing their results in the July 2017 issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology. The researchers looked at 379 male and female business leaders in 30 countries across fields including banking, retail and technology. The managers took IQ tests and each was rated (定级) on leadership style and effectiveness by an average of eight co-workers. IQ positively correlated(和…正相关) with ratings of leader effectiveness, strategy formation, vision and several other characteristics—up to a point. The ratings peaked at an IQ of around 120, which is higher than roughly 80 percent of office workers. Beyond that, the ratings declined. The researchers suggest the "ideal" IQ could be higher or lower in various fields, to 140 or 100, depending on whether technical or social skills are more valued in a given work culture."It's an interesting and thoughtful paper," says Paul Sackett, a management professor at University of Minnesota, who was not involved in the research."To me, the right interpretation of the work would be that it highlights a need to understand what high-IQ leaders do that leads to lower understanding by followers," he says. "The wronginterpretation would be, ‘Don't hire high-IQ leaders."The study's lead author, John Antonakis, a psychologist at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, suggests leaders should use their intelligence to use creative language that will persuade and inspire others—the way former U.S. President Barack Obama did. "I think the only way a smart person can signal their intelligence properly and still connect with the people," Antonakis says, "is to speak in charming ways."21.According to the first paragraph, we know that _______.A. leaders with high IQ do not have effective leadershipB. effective business depends on the intelligence of leadersC. leaders with higher IQ may do harm to group effectivenessD. the higher IQ leaders have, the stronger leadership they possess22.According to Simonton, managers with an IQ of about ________ are probably the most effective.A. 80B. 100C. 120D. 14023.What is Paul Sackett's attitude towards hiring high-IQ leaders?A. Unconcerned.B. Positive.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear.24.Barack Obama is mentioned in the last paragraph to ________.A. encourage us to learn more about leadershipB. explain how intelligent people achieve successC. show creativity is more important than intelligenceD. emphasize the importance of using intelligence properlyGarden parties are one of the traditions that began in the United Kingdom and France a number of centuries ago. Both the British and French versions have roots in the weekend getawaysthat were enjoyed by the upper classes. In the afternoons and evenings, the grounds of the estates (房产) would be softly lit with candles and lanterns, food prepared and set in long buffet tables for the guests, and comfortable seating always within reach.People tended to dress up for these types of outdoor events, which made them quite a festive occasion. String bands often provided a graceful melody that served as one of the ways that the elegant tone of the occasion was set and maintained.Today, the concept lives on around the world. No longer just an event for the well to do, the garden party is a weekend gathering in many neighborhoods. Neighbors are invited to come enjoy the outdoors by attending a cookout, complete with plenty of grilled food, lots of seating, and usually plenty to drink. It is not unusual for a few simple games to be available as well, depending on the size of the space. Music does not necessarily have to be provided by a live band anymore, although some people prefer the chatter and laughter of people enjoying themselves to any type of musical accompaniment. The modern version can be very free form, or use a special occasion or theme as the basis for the event. For example, a birthday is a great reason to throw this type of party. Major patriotic holidays often provide the theme, with the decorations revolving around the national c olors and other symbols. Fun times, such as Valentine’s Day or and Easter egg hunt, can also be the reason for putting together a party. As long as the event takes place outdoors, has people to interact, and includes food and drink, the event is complete. 25.Why did the upper classes hold garden parties centuries ago?A. To entertain themselves.B. To get away from home.C. To show off their estates.D. To know other upper class people.26.What do we know about garden parties that are held today?A. They are still held mainly for the rich.B. They have very different concepts now.C. They always have live band performances.D. They can be enjoyed by common people.27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Garden parties have become informal today.B. Garden parties have various themes today.C. Garden parties are usually held on birthdays.D. Garden parties are not always held outdoors.28.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?A. History of Garden PartiesB.
