专题限时训练(三十)(一)Every spring scores of people flock to the Buzzard Festival at Hinckley,Ohio. They come to watch for buzzards. Most would be glad just to take a look at a buzzard. If they do see one of these “flying garbage cans”,it will probably be circling high in the sky. From there it can watch the ground for signs of the waste and the dead animals on which it feeds. The buzzard is the ugliest bird in the United States. In fact,it may well be the ugliest bird in the world. It has a small, bare, pink head. Its thick body is covered with dark, rough feathers. In spite of its looks, the buzzard is important to the people of Hinckley. It is their first sign of spring. After a winter in the south, buzzards return to their homes in the north. In the Hinckley area, they always return on March 15. No one knows why. But they have come back to Hinckley Ridge on that day, sure as clocks work, for at least forty years. The excitement starts in February. By the middle of March it has reached a high peak. Bets are placed. Prizes go to the person who sees the first buzzard. Radio stations and newspapers tell of the coming festival. And on the weekend after March 15 the people of Hinckley hold their Buzzard Festival. The people come and look around. They chat. They eat their pancakes and sausages. Then they drive past Buzzard’s Roost on Hinckley Ridge.A lot of them stop near the road at the stand set up to give information to visitors. There they can hear, from a recording, the main facts about the buzzard. They can see a stuffed buzzard. They can look at some pictures taken of buzzards in other years. With good luck and a strong pair of field glasses, they may sight one or two live buzzards high in the sky.Buzzards may be ugly. They may be “flying garbage cans”. But in Hinckley they are just as welcome as the swallows are in Capistrano in California. It would be a sad spring indeed if the buzzards ever failed to come back to Hinckley Ridge.()1. A good title for this story would be ________.A.The hinckley buzzard festivalB.Buzzard, the ugliest birdC.Why the buzzard has a pink headD.The return of “the garbage can”()2. The buzzard is called the “flying garbage can” because it ________.A.is uglyB.eats waste and dead animalsC.looks like a garbage canD.collect rubbish on the ground()3. The surprising thing about Hinckley’s buzzards is that ________.A.they spend the winter in the southB.they come very close to the townC.they return on the same day each yearD.both buzzards and swallows return to Capistrano on March 15()4. At the information stand, visitors to Hinckley’s Buzzard Festival can ________.A.learn some facts about the buzzardB.easily see a live buzzardC.take some pictures with the background of live buzzardsD.feed their pancakes and sausages to buzzards(二)What can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later. The idea that popularity could have a serious impact on one’s earning potential shouldn’t comeas too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.“If a person has lots of friends,it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun,17,from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you occasionally feel depressed,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary”.Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts. But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition (定义) of ‘friend’,” said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.()1. The new study from the University of Essex in Britain shows that ________.A.if you have more friends you will not live happilyB.the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn in your late lifeC.the less friends you have, the poorer lives you will liveD.friends can make more money for you()2. According to Xu Yanchun, when you have lots of friends,it means________A.you have the ability to earn more moneyB.you will not feel lonelyC.you are quite content with your lifeD.you have the ability to get along with others in various situations()3. Most of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world’s greatest violinists, the reason for this phenomenon. “It’s very clear,”he told me. “ They were all Jews and Jews at the time were severely oppressed and ill-treated in that part of the world. They were not allowed into the professional fields, but they were allowed to achieve excellence on a concert stage.” As a result, every Jewish parent’s dream was to have a child in the music school because it was a passport to the West.Another element in the emergence of prodigies,I found,is a society that values excellence in a certain field and is able to nurture(培育) talent. Nowadays the most nurturing societies seem to be in the Far East. “ In Japan,a most competitive society with stronger discipline than ours,” says Isaac Stern,“ Children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including music. When western music came to Japan after World War II,that music not only became part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well.” The Koreans and Chinese,as we know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese. That’s a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biologicalinheritance plays an important role in the making of a prodigy. J. S. Bach, for example, was the top of several generations of musicians, and four of his sons had significant careers in music.()1. Jewish parents in Eastern Europe longed for their children to attend music school because ________.A.it would allow them access to a better life in the WestB.Jewish children are born with excellent musical talentC.they wanted their children to enter into the professional fieldsD.it would enable the family to get better treatment in their own country()2. Nurturing societies as mentioned in the passage refer to societies that________.A.enforce strong discipline on students who want to achieve excellence B.treasure talent and provide opportunities for its full developmentC.encourage people to compete with each otherD.promise talented children high positions()3. Japan is described in the passage as a country that attaches importance to________.A.all-rounded developmentB.the learning of western musicC.strict training of childrenD.variety in academic studies()4. But a recent study seems to indicate that the best thing we might be able to do for our creativity is leave all of these high-tech toys at home and just take a walk in the woods. In the study, David L. Strayer and his fellow researchers worked with 30 men and 26 women who were about to go on a four-day hike, during which they would be taken away from all of the creative toys mentioned above. Before the hike began, Strayer gave the participants a standardized Remote Associates Test, which is often used to test creativity and creative problem-solving abilities. After the hike, they were given the test again. The result showed that there was a 50% improvement in the participants' creative problem-solving abilities, As Strayer says, "This is a great effect."This study is the first to document systematic changes in higher-level cognitive (认知的) function connected with entering nature. The research suggests that effect nature seems to have on improving creative thinking is due to the lack of distractions (分心的事) in the natural environment-there are no ringing phones, noisy computers, etc. Other studies have shown that the color green-the color of much of nature-is felt by the brain as relaxing, and that increased relaxation may be one of the factors that improve creativity.None of this is exactly news. The benefits of nature have been known for centuries. The philosopher and author Henry David Thoreau spoke eloquent (富有表现力的) about the two years he spent in the countryside. The experience certainly seemed to develop his creativity-he went on to write 50 books. Given this recent study, it looks as if his advice in Walden to "simplify, simplify, simplify" is good-if you want to relax your mind and make it become more creative, take a walk in the woods, and leave your cellphone behind.41. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. High-tech toys are useless for creativity.B. There is much news about nature's effect on human mindC. Strayer's study is the first to deal with nature's effect on creativity.D. Participants were asked not to take their cellphones during the hike.42. Which of the following can encourage creativity according to the study led by Strayer?A. Having a relaxing feeling in nature.B. Learning more knowledge about natureC.
