ACommunity(社区) service is important for many reasons.Taking part and volunteering teaches sympathy and understanding. One of my favorite things about it is that there are opportunities and choices right in your very neighborhood. When I was younger,I volunteered for a nearby animal shelter. At first I didn’t know many people there and wasn’t very ter,as I got to know the animals and staff members I learned to enjoy my time there. It was a very rewarding experience and I got to do many things I wouldn’t have had an opportunity to do otherwise.Sometimes when I was there I would see other kids taking part. Most of them were volunteering because they needed service hours for school. These kids sometimes just sat around waiting for their time to pass. But there were also others, who had apparently enjoyed their experiences, and wanted to do more afterwards. Not only is community service fun and rewarding,it also looks great on a resume(简历) or college application.Sometimes community service is even required for high school st year in my life skills class we were asked to write a paper about whether we thought requiring students at a university to complete 75 hours of community service was a good idea.I wrote,“I don’t think that is too much as long as the students are given enough time and a variety of choices.”As I move through life I will be always involved in community service, not just because it is important but also because it is something I enjoy and look forwardto. So maybe it is the right time you should go out, volunteer your time and make a difference, even if your reward is only a nod or smile.1.The writer began to enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter when he . A.realized the importance of community serviceB.witnessed some students wasting their timeC.got inspired by the enthusiastic volunteersD.adjusted himself to the new environment答案 D解析推理判断题。

四川省通江县2016高考英语阅读能力训练题(10)【2014高考英语湖北省八校联考】阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Many skilled young people are being forced into part-time and unskilled work, the report says. It warns of a "crisis" with more than six million people so disillusioned they have given up looking for work. The ILO(International Labor Organization)wants governments to make job creation a priority. It wants more training schemes, and also tax breaks for employers."The youth unemployment crisis can be beaten but only if job creation for young people becomes a key priority in policymaking and private sector investment picks up significantly," said Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, executive director of the ILO's employment sector.Since 2007, the number of young people without jobs has risen by four million - up from less than 12%, the Global Employment Trends for Youth Report says. Almost 13% of people aged between 15 and 24 - or almost 75 million - have no work, although this is slightly down on its peak in 2009.In the European Union, one in five young people are looking for work, the report claims. Some 27.9% of youths were unemployed in North Africa last year —a rise of five percentage points on 2010. In the Middle East, the figure stood at 26.5% in the report's regional breakdown. Even in East Asia, perhaps the most economically active region, the unemployment rate was 2.8 times higher for young people than for adults, the report said. But, the ILO report reveals, the true picture of youth unemployment is even more pessimistic. Many young people are extending their time in higher education because they cannot find jobs. Others are taking part-time unskilled work because they cannot find work in the fields they trained for.The ILO says that more than six million young people worldwide have given up looking for work and are becomingly increasingly detached from society. By not using their skills they are losing them, the report says, and if there is no improvement in thejobs market soon, they may be not only unemployed, but unemployable. The ILO suggests offering tax breaks to businesses hiring young people and offering more programmes to help kick-start careers.63. Which of the following is true according to Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs?A. Since 2007, the number of young people out of job has risen to 4 million.B. Nearly 13% of the young people have no work.C. Job creation should be made a key priority in policymaking.D. The youth unemployment rate can never go down.64. The various figures in paragraph 3 and 4 were used to show_________.A. The employment situation is serious only in the European UnionB. The global youth employment situation is depressingC. East Asia enjoys a high youth employment rateD. Compared with the situation in 2009, the youth employment in 2007 is slightly better65. According to ILO, the following are caused by high youth unemployment rate except__________.A. The government calls on young people to take up whatever job is availableB. Many young people are making their time in higher education longerC. Some young people are taking part-time unskilled workD. Many young people have given up looking for work66. The ILO offered many solutions to the crisis of youth unemployment,including___________.a. making job creations a priorityb. more training schemesc. encouraging public investmentd. tax breaks for employerse. offering more entrepreneurship programmes to help start careersA. a b c eB. b c d eC. a c d eD. a b d e【参考答案】63-66CBAD【2014高考英语湖北省八校联考】阅读下列短文,从每篇短文后所给各题的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

The Cost of ThinkingDespite their many differences, all human beings share several defining characteristics. such as large brains and the ability to walk upright on two legs. The first unique human characteristic is that humans have extraordinarily large brains compared with other animals. It seems obvious that evolution should select for larger brains. Mammals(哺乳动物)weighing sixty kilograms have an average brain size of 200 cm2. Modern man has a brain averaging 1200-1400 cm2. We are so fond of our high intelligence that we assume that when it comes to brain power, more must be better. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The fact is that a huge brain is a huge drain—consumption of energy—on the body. I's not easy to carry around, especially when boxed inside a massive skull(倾骨). It's even harder to provides energy. In modern man, the brain accounts for about 2-3%of total body weight but it consumes 25% of the body's energy when the body is at rest. By comparison, the brains of apes(类人猿)require only 8%of rest-time energy. Early humans pad for their large brains in two ways. Firstly, they spent more time in search food. Secondly, their muscles grew smaller and weaker. It's hardly an obvious conclusion that this is a good way to survive. A chimpanzee(黑猩猩) can't win an argument with a modern man, but it can tear the man apart like a rag doll.Another unique human characteristic is that we walk upright. Standing up, it's easier to find food or enemies. In addition, their arms that are unnecessary for moving around are freed for other purposes, like throwing stones or signaling. As a result, humans can perform very complex tasks with their hands.Yet walking upright has its disadvantage. The bone structure of our ancestors developed for millions of years to support a creature that walked on all fours and has a relatively small head. Adjusting to an upright position was quite a challenge, especially when the bones had to support an extra-large skull. Humankind paid for its broad vision andskillful hands backaches and painful necks. We assume that a large brain makes huge advantages. It seems obvious that these have made humankind the most powerful animal on earth. But humans enjoyed all of these advantages for a full 2 million years during which they remained weak and marginal creature. Thus humans who lived a million years agodespite their big brains and sharp stone tools, lived in constant fear of meat-eating animals.【语篇解读】本文为说明文。

四川省通江县2018高考英语阅读能力训练题(11)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
The $ 11 billion self – help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like “ I never do anything right” into positive ones like “I can succeed.” But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply stress how unhappy they are.The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is too positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your stupid friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the authors were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic me asured 68 students’ self-respect. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable." Those with low self-respect didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation(自我肯定). In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts. The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy (心理治疗) that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Instead, meditation (静思) techniques can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic way. Call it the power of negative thinking.41. What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?A. It was established by Norman Vincent Peale.B.
