Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents today are more involved in their children's education than parents were in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. The involvement of parents in their children’s education has been acknowledged to include not only the exact knowledge and values they would tell their children but also the attention they would pay to their children’s educational process as well as the role they would play during the decision-making process. From my perspective, modern parents are more related to their children’s educational aspects than parents are in the past. It could not be denied that parents in the modern society would bear much more responsibilities and burdens as well than those in the past such as the financial pressure to support the family, due to the increasing desire of individuals and the economic reality in the present society. That means modern parents would spend plenty of time on earning money and have less time to be with their children or to actually teach them. However, the real situation regarding the children education is that parents in the present are more likely to emphasize the education of their children in various respects such as arranging the detailed study plan for their children. Moreover, the emphasis children would receive on their education from the parents has been increased significantly in the contemporary society, because of the fact that individuals now have generally believed in the essential influence of the education on people especially the younger generation. That significance could be realized by the modern parents during their working and social experiences, and it to a great extent could be comprehended due to the reality that the well-educated person has been demanded in relatively every area of the current society. Therefore, in order to help their children to become successful and qualified, parents in the present have been inclined to check or help with their school projects, to have them acquire multiple skills, and to expect them to receive the best education at a higher level, which would not be the focus of the parents in the past who even did not care about the educational situation of their children and merely held the expectation that the children could help to support the family in terms of the finance as soon as possible. Furthermore, it has been proposed that current parents have been more active during the process of making decisions related to their children's educational choices than the past. That could suggest that to some extent they would like to exert an influence on the children and their educational affairs rather than be willing to let their children to have the independent decision-making process as they did in the past, which might be due to the possibility that the present parents might place more emphasis on their children’s education and not want them to make any mistakes. However, this situation could probably be interpreted that the modern parents could be considered to be the better educated people themselves and could assist their children to choose wisely and appropriately by offering the relevant information and reasonable advice in the course of educational matters such as how to plan their time arrangements, what major they would study in, and whether they should have a gap year before entering the university. In conclusion, although modern parents might have less time with their children than those in the past during their educational period, they definitely could be regarded as more active in the participation in their children's educational activities in terms of the attention they might pay and the positive effort they might provide to help their children to make educational decisions due to the fact that they perceive the importance.

ReadingRobert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary's claim.First, the National Geographic Society put together a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary's records and equipment. At the end of the investigation, the committee concluded that Peary's accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole.Second, a recent expedition provides support for Peary's claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. Skeptics used to argue that Peary could not have traveled that fast, since even modern snowmobiles take longer to cover the same distance. However, a Britishexplorer named Tom Avery recently made the same trek in less than 37 days. In fact, Avery used the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had. Thus, Peary's claims are not impossible, and he very well might have been telling the truth.Third, there are photographs taken by Peary that support his claim to have reached the North Pole. Measuring the shadows in Peary's photographs makes it possible to calculate the Surf s position in the sun. The Surf s position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Surf s position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. This provides strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and took the photographs there.ListeningNow listen to part of a lecture on the topic you just read about.ProfessorThere’s no solid evidence that Robert Peary reached the North Pole. The arguments cited in the reading selection are not convincing.First, it is true that the National Geographic Society committee declared that Peary had indeed reached the North Pole, but the committee was not completely objective. In fact, the committee was composed of Peary’s close friends who h ad contributed large sums of money to fund Peary’s trip. Moreover, the investigation lasted only two days. And according to Peary himself, the committee did not examine his records carefully. So the committee’s conclusions seem biased and therefore are not trustworthy.Second, the speed issue. Tom Avery’s journey was different from Peary’s in important ways. For example, Avery’s sled was similar to Peary’s sled, but Averycarried much less weight than Peary did, because Avery did not transport his food on the sled. Avery’s food was dropped along the way by airplane. Moreover, Avery encountered highly favorable weather conditions, unlike Peary who travelled in very unfavorable conditions. So Avery’s speedy trip was too different from Peary’s to provide suppo rt for Peary’s claims.Third, the photographs do not prove anything. The techniques scientists use to determine the Sun’s position depend on measuring the shadows in the photographs very precisely. Without a precise measurement of the shadows, we cannot establish the Sun’s exact position. Now, Peary’s pictures were photographed a hundred years ago using a primitive camera that took fuzzy, slightly unfocused photographs. Moreover, the photos have become faded and worn over time. As a result, the shadows in Peary’s photographs look blurred and faded. Those shadows cannot be used to calculate the position of the Sun with great accuracy. So we cannot be confident the photos were really taken at the North Pole.

Three theories1 spreading of pores(light在fruiting bodies那个地方)2 preventing predators(by attracting the predators that prey on mushroom-feed insects)3 get rid of harmful chemicals听力反驳:Less convincing1 有些light不在那个body里,即发光和存spore不是一个部位2 研究表明蘑菇吸引到的predator很少,不足以吃完insects3 getting rid of harmful chemical是本能,不然就会死。
When you are assigned an important presentation for work or school, you prefer to work on it right away so that you can work on it a little bit every day, or wait until you have a good idea about the presentationA lot of students prefer to start their schoolwork closer to when it’s due, but not me. I like to start working as soon as I get an assignment. One reason I think this method works better is because it feels less stressful. For example, if you spread out an essay assignment over 2 weeks instead of doing it all in 2 days, the assignment suddenly do esn’t seem as daunting. You only need to work on it an hour or two a day, instead of cramming all of your writing and research into a 48-hour marathon. But this reason alone wouldn’t be enough to get me working on assignments early.Another reason it’s be tter to start tackling schoolwork right away is that spreading work out over a longer period gives you more time to consider different approaches to your task. If you’re writing about a historical event, for example, it might be helpful to think about it from multiple perspectives. But rushing through your writing and research over the course of 2 days may not give you the pauses you need to distance yourself from the work and consider different interpretations. If you took your time, on the other hand, you might get flashes of inspiration during your time away from working on the assignment. Developing your topic bit by bit every day, you can incorporate interesting or unconventional ideas that might not have occurred to you had you just left the assignment untouched until the last minute. Finally, I think doing your work early is a good way to actually retain the material. Studies have shown that spaced-repetition—that is, reviewing previously learned material at spaced out intervals—is far more effective for remembering information than just cramming. That’s because our brains need some time to process and incorporate the information we’ve learned into our long-term memory. By reinforcing our knowledge over a period of, say, weeks rather than hours, we give our brains the time they need to really learn things thoroughly. I know this holds true for me personally—if I study in the weeks leading up to a test rather than just the night before, I remember the information much better. It’s easy to put off work u ntil the last minute, but starting early has a lot of benefits. It’s less stressful, for one thing, but it also gives you time to consider your approach more fully and you learn better by starting early, too. Beginning work as soon as it’s assigned will be nefit you greatly in the long run.。

1.第一个是spreading of pores, light在fruiting bodies那个地方。
题目
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? When you are assigned an important presentation for work or school, you prefer to work on it right away so that you can work on it a little bit every day, or wait until you have a good idea about the present?
3.第三个是get rid of harmful chemicals。

2.第二个是preventing predators(by attaracting the predators that prey on mushroom-feed insects)。
