Part I Reading Comprehension (24 points)Directions:There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 1 to 4 are based on the following passage. It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a lO-knownmile race over a course with a few high hills. Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kiseo, New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was; why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one? I'd overtake(追上) her later on when she tired. So I ran behind her. The course headed north for miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to know him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don't chat during a race unless you feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost determine who crossed it first. As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away--first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no help of catching her. She beat me soundly. There is an important lesson in that race. Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sport. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than differences. I have run with a number of women, andI can say it is often hard work.1. What did the writer think of the race in the beginning?A. It would be hard work.B. It would be an easy race.C. It would be a test of his strength.D. It would be a good learning experience.2. What worried the writer when Peggy greeted the young runner?A. Peggy overtook the young runner.B. Peggy was running energetically.C. Peggy was laughing as the writer.D. Peggy paid no attention to the writer.3. By saying "a long, punishing hill" (paragraph 5 ), the writer implies that _____________ .A. Peggy would fail to reach the hilltopB. men are more skilled at climbing hillsC. overtaking Peggy would be easyD. climbing the hill would be a demanding task4. What lesson does the writer learn from the race?A. Women are as good as men in sport.B. Women are better at climbing hills.C. He should have more training in a cross-country race.D. He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.Questions 5 to 8 are based on the following passage.Though war is something people hate, Director Feng Xiaogang often exposes his audience to it. “If we don’t impress the audience, who are without the painful experience of war, with the cruel injury to life and human nature war causes, how can we bring them a love of peace and objection to war?” asked the director with anger in his eyes. After Red River Valley and Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River, both of which star Chinese model and actress Ning Jing, Feng drew a satisfactory full stop to his war trilogy last month with Purple Sunset. The film tells a story which took place in 1945, at the very moment when World War II was drawing to and end. A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier flee into a forest, where they seize a Japanese girl. They follow the girl in the hope that she will take them out of the forest, but instead they arrive in a Japanese base. Humanity (仁慈)prevents them from killing the young, innocent victim of Japanese militarism(军国主义). This humanity, the longing for peace and eagerness to survive, make the three unite.“If people are touched by justice, tolerance and unselfishness, I think I have achieved my goal,” Feng said. Feng admits that there are violent and bloody scenes in the film, such as tanksfighting and Japanese burning Chinese people alive, to show t he cruelty of war. But that’s never his personal preference, he says. “Everyone who has watched my films can tell how much I detest war, “he said, “I wrote all the things for my war films by myself. Whenever I finished one, I felt as though I had suffered great pain.”Feng regards every one of his productions as an opportunity to learn about human nature and humanity. In spite of violent scenes which frighten and sicken the audience, a balance is sought with beautiful scenery. Just like the snowy mountains in Red River Valley and the grand plateau in Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River, a beautiful vast grassland appears in this film. “I used to study art and I appreciate beautiful things,” Feng said. “I believe that films should offer the audience a chance to enjoy beauty.”5. b.Spoiling a child also happens when parents are unable to stand up to their children's unreasonable demands. Such parents fluctuate between saying no and giving in —but neither response seems satisfactory to them. If they refuse a request, they immediately feel a wave of regret for having been so strict or ungenerous. If they give in, they feel regret and resentment over having been too easy. This kind of variability not only loosens the parents' ability to set limits, it also sours the parent-child relationship to some degree, robbing parents and their children of some of the happiness and mutual respect that is present in healthy families.I. Reading[A]I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes. At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as apost-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed through the lens of gender politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight severely on my behalf and all womankind. Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociolo gy or political theory.Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don’t dismiss those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war” stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.1.Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?A) She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.B) She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination..C) She is not good at telling stories of the kind.D) She finds space research more important.2. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute the author’s fail ures to:A) the very fact that she is a woman ..B) the burden she bears in a male-dominated societyC) her over-confidence as a female astrophysicistD) her involvement in gender politics3.What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research? A) Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.B) Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.C) People’s stereotyped attitude toward female scientist s..D) Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.4.Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?A) Female students no longer have to bother about genderissues.B) Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.C) Her female students can do just as well as male students.D) More female students are pursuing science than before..5.What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A) Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.B) Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.C) Women can balance a career in science and having a family..D) Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.Exercises for NHCE-2 Unit3&4I.Fill in the blanks with the word or phrases you have learned.11Like most married couples we've had our , but life is like that.12They'd never such poor service before.13He's a thief and a liar; I'd with him, if I were you.14This problem over late paying has shown him .15We were shocked when we his sudden death.16 it doesn't rain we can play.17She has some terrible experiences.18You certainly when you said that he was lazy.19Don't more than you can deal with.20The plan had to be cancelled for money.Translationa.1当地政府将毫不犹豫的采取最严厉的措施对付犯罪分子。

长治学院2014 —— 2015学年第二学期期末考试补考卷考试科目: 大学英语2(A、B 级)考试对象:2014级A、B级班I. Reading Comprehension(40 Points)Section ONE: Fast ReadingDirections: In this part, you are to go over the passage quickly and choose the best answer from the four possible choices.Shopping in AmericaGoing shopping seems easy, but actually it takes a lot of learning, especially in America. In fact, many Americans who are not so well-off often shop at “sales” or at special stores that sell things at low prices, which you may find interesting. In America, the important rule of dressing is that one should change his or her clothes every day. For example, in an American college, neither professor nor students are seen in the same clothes two days in a row.So you may find it necessary to buy more clothes than you have in China. While you are shopping in the United States, you will discover that prices range considerably form time to time. The purchase of used, second-hand clothing, furniture, or other household articles may be an excellent way of saving money. Most second-hand clothes are of pretty good quality. If you are going to settle down in the United States and want some furniture, you may go to a “loan closet”, where furniture is rented at low cost, or you may also go to a “furniture exchange” place in the community.Sheets, blankets, and other bedclothes go on sale in most communities twice a year. Advertisements for “white sales”, that is, sales on bed linen, towels, etc., often appear in January, as well as in May, June or July. Once or twice every season, there will be “garage sales”, where you can get almost anything, from a yacht to a pair of shoes, at low prices. Prices at “discount stores” and “thrift shops” are also as low as you can imagine. When shopping for food, you should look for special prices for various items that are put on sale weekly. To economize, it would be a good idea for you to plan the weekly menu according to what is on sale, including in it the meats, vegetable, fruits, etc. that can be bought at special prices that week.Exchange and return policies vary from store to store. You should also keep in mind that exchange and return policies for sales items can be different from standard store policies, especially for the prices before making your purchase. Obtaining an exchange or a return without a store receipt is often difficult. So, to save yourself the headache, you’d better hold onto any paper or other proof of purchase.1. Schools in France, Egypt, Singapore, etc, have also recently made top-level hires from abroad. Higher education has become a big and competitive business nowadays, and like so many business, it’s gone global. Yet the talent flow isn’t universal. High-level personnel tend to head in only one direction: outward from America. The chief reason is that American schools don’t tend to seriously consider looking abroad. For example, when the board of the University of Colorado searched for a new president, it wanted a leader familiar with the state government, a major source of the university’s budget. “We didn’t do any global consideration,” says Patricia Hays, the board’s chair. The board ultimately picked Bruce Benson, a 69-year-old Colorado businessman and political activist who is likely to do well in the main task of modern university presidents: fund-raising. Fund-raising is a distinctively American thing, since U.S. schools rely heavily on donations. The fund-raising ability is largely a product of experience and necessity. Many European universities, meanwhile, are still mostly dependent on government funding. But government support has failed to keep pace with rising student number. The decline in government support has make funding –raising an increasing necessarily ability among administrators and has hiring committees hungry for Americans. In the past few years, prominent schools around the world have joined the trend. In 2003, when Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, as its vice-chancellor, the university publicly stressed that in her previous job she had overseen “a major strengthening of Yale’s financial position.”Of course, fund-raising isn’t the only skill outsiders offer. The globalization of education means more universities will be seeking heads with international experience of some kind of promote international programs and attract a global student body. Foreigners can offer a fresh perspective on established practices.6. What is the current trend in higher education discussed in the passage ?A. Institutions worldwide are hiring administrators from the U.S.B. A lot of political activists are being recruited as administrators.C. American universities are enrolling more international students.D. University presidents are paying more attention to fund-raising.7. Their administrative experience.8. What do we learn about European universities from the passage?A. The tuitions they charge have been rising considerably.B. Their operation is under strict government supervision.C. They are strengthening their position by globalization.D. Most of their revenues come from the government.9. Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard as its vice-chancellor chiefly because_____?A. she could help strengthen its ties with Yale.B. she was known to be good at raising money.C. she knew how to attract students overseas.D. she had boosted Yale’s academic status.10. In what way do top-level administrators form abroad contribute to university development?A. They can enhance the university’s image.B. They will bring more international faculty.C. They can build new academic disciplines.D. They will view many things from new perspectivesPassage two:Last Tuesday I was invited to participate in a party for Tuesday’s Children, an organization that helps children with the AIDS virus. I was asked to attend because I’m on a television show. I don’t think that most of the kids recognized me as a famous person, but as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I think I liked it better that way.At the party, they had all kinds of activities. I was drawn to one in particular because all the children were taking part in it. In that activity, anyone who wanted to participate could paint a square. Later all the painted squares were going to be sewn together to make a wall hanging. The wall hanging would be presented to a man who had devoted much of his life to this organization and would soon be retiring. They gave everyone some paints in bright, beautiful colors, and asked the kids to paint something that would make the wall hanging beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pink hearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrise, and green and purple flowers. The pictures were all bright, positive, and uplifting. All except for one.The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, and lifeless. It lacked the bright, lively colors that his fellow artists had used.At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because his heart felt dark and he was very sick. He said that his sickness was not ever going to get better. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “There is nothing anyone can do that will help.”I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. I could even understand why he had made his heart a dark color. But I also told him that it isn’t true that there is nothing anyone can do to help. Other people may not be able to make him better, but we can do things like sharing our time and our love, which in my experience can really help when people are feeling sad. I told him that if he liked, I would be happy to spend some time talking with him so that he could see what I meant. But instead of talking with me, he did something different. He instantly came near to me and wrapped his arms around my neck. When he did this, I felt my own heart had burst with the love for this sweet little boy.He sat there talking with me for a long time and when he had had enough, he jumped down to finish his coloring. I asked him if he felt any better and he said that he did, but he was still sick and nothing would change that. I told him I understood. I walked away feeling sad, but I determined that I would do whatever I could to help.As the day was coming to and end and I was getting ready to head home, I felt a slight pull on my jacket. I turned around and found the little boy was standing there with a smile on his face. He said, “My heart is changing colors. It is getting brighter. I think love really does work.”On my way home I felt my own heart and realized it, too, had changed to a brighter color.11. Passage three: Roger Sperry and Robert Ornstein of the California Institute of Technology won a Nobel Prize in 1972. They discovered that the human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do. The left side of the brain controls language and number; it analyses and reasons. The right side controls our imagination; it controls our understanding of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar: they both use the two sides of their brain. It is well-known that Albert Einstein, a great scientist, spent time enjoying art, playing the violin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. He got ideas by using his imagination. Following this, he used the left side of brain to use analysis, number and reason and then he used language to explain it.Usual education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don’t we give more value to visual thinking? In fact, all of us need both sides of our brain. We need to use our imagination to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy feeling and creative experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to live on this world. It is true that some people find it easier to use one side of the brain rather than the other, but all of us can use both sides and all of us benefit by using all the powers we have.16. According to the passage, a great composer composes music by using ________ of his brain.A .the right side B. the left side C .both sides D. neither side17. Albert Einstein’s example is used to support the idea that ______.A. all scientific discoveries are based on imagination.B. people should do nothing but daydream.C. using two sides of the brain is important.D. scientists are good at imagining what may happen.18. It is implied in the passage that regular education________.A. should be praised because it suggests using both sides of the brain.B. finds it very important to have daydreams.C. claims that analysis and reason are of no value.D. fails to develop the right side of the brain.19. Is it true that some people find it easier to use one side of the brain rather than the other? _____.A. YesB. NoC. Not mentioned.D. Both are ok.20. The author’s attitude toward using two sides of the brain is _____.A. positiveB. negativeC. not logicalD. criticalII. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. A great athlete practices until he can play quickly accurately without thinking. Tennis players call that "being in the zone." Educators call it "automatically."A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and decoding the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about decoding the words, so he can concentrate on the meaning of the text.It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found autom atic readers in the first grade who were reading almost three times as fast as the other children and scoring twice as high on comprehension tests. At fifth grade, the automatic readers were reading twice as fast as the others; and still outscoring them on accuracy, comprehension and vocabulary."It's not I. Q. but the amount of time a child spends reading that is the key to autom aticity, " according to Rossman. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will in all likelihood reach automaticity. At home, where the average child spends 25 hours a week watching television, it can happen by turning off the set just one night in favor of reading. You can test your child by giving him a paragraph or two to read aloud - som ething unfamiliar but appropriate to his age. If he reads aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, he probably is an automatic reader. If he reads haltingly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, he needs more practice.35. The first paragraph tells us ________.A) what automaticity isB) how accuracy is acquiredC) how a child learns to walkD) how an athlete is trained36. An automatic reader _______.A) sounds out the lettersB) concentrates on meaningC) has a high I.Q.D) pays much attention to the structures of sentences37. The Illinois study shows that the automatic reader's high speed ________.A) costs him a lot of workB) affects his comprehensionC) leads to his future successD) doesn't affect his comprehension39. A bright child ________.A) also needs practice to be an automatic readerB) always achieves great success in comprehension testsC) becomes an automatic reader after learning how to readD) is a born automatic reader40. The main idea of the passage isA) how to score high on comprehension testsB) reading is the key to school successC) how to test your child's reading abilityD) automaticity is important for efficient readingIII. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you are "hot". That's tree. The time of day when you feel most energetic (精力充沛的) is when your cycle of body temperature is at this peak (高峰). For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words as: "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is he is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually (习惯性的) staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start, which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.1. Dr. Kleitman thinks that__________________.A. getting up late in the morning means lazinessB. if your energy peak is in the evening, you might like getting up earlyC. people can do nothing about energy cycleD. spending some time yawning and stretching helps to keep you energetic2. According to the passage, family quarrels may result from__________________.A. the same energy cycle of family membersB. unawareness of different energy cyclesC. failing to get up early in the morningD. knowledge of energy cycles3. If you are used to getting up late in the morning, you are likely to be most energetic________.A. in the morningB. at noonC. in the afternoonD. in the evening4. What's the likely relationship between energy cycle and body temperature?A. Energy cycle and body temperature are the same things.B. The higher your temperature is, the less energetic you are.C. The higher your temperature is, the more energetic you are.D. There is no direct relation between them.5. Which of the following statements is not true?A. One can change his energy cycle once he makes up his mind.B. We still don't know why people have different energy cycles.C. Habit will help to make our life fit energy cycles better.D. If you rise earlier than usual, you will be more efficient at your low point in the morning.Passage 2The energy crisis, which is being felt around the world, has dramatized how the careless use of the earth's resources has brought the whole world to the brink of disaster. The over-development of motor transport, with its increase of more cars, more highways, more pollution, more suburbs, more commuting, has contributed to the near-destruction of our cities, the breakup of the family, and the pollution not only of local air but also of the earth' s atmosphere. The disaster has arrived in the form of the energy crisis. Our present situation is unlike war, revolution or depression. It is also unlike the great natural disasters of the past. Worldwide resource exploitation and energy use have brought us to a state where long-range planning is essential. What we need is not a continuation of our present serious state, which endangers the future of our country, our children, and our earth, but a movement forward to a new norm in order to work rapidly and effectively on planetary problems. This country has been falling back under the continuing exposures of lost morality and the revelation that lawbreaking has reached into the highest places in the land. There is a strong demand for moral revival and for some devotion that is vast enough and yet personal enough to enlist the devotion of all. In the past it has been only in a way in defense of their own country and their own ideals that any people have been able to devote themselves whole-heartedly.This is the first time that we have been asked to defend ourselves and that we hold dear in cooperation with all the other inhabitants of this planet, who share with us the same endangered air and the same endangered oceans. There is a common need to reassess our present course, to change that course and to devise new methods through which the world can survive, This is a priceless opportunity. To grasp it we need a widespread understanding of nature if the crisis confronting us and the world is a crisis that is no passing inconvenience, no by-product of the ambitions of the oil-producing countries, no environmentalists’mere fears, no by-producing countries, no by-product of any present system of the last four hundred years. What we need is a transformed life style. This new life style can flow directly from science and technology, but its acceptancedepends on a: sincere devotion to finding a higher quality of life for the world's children and future generation.1. Which condition does the author feel has nearly destroyed our cities?A) Lack of financial planning. B)The breakup of the family.C) Natural disasters in ninny regions. D) The excessive growth of motors.2. According to the author, what is one example of our loss of morality?A)Disregard for law. B)Lack of devotion.C) Lack of cooperation. D)Exploitation of resources.3. By comparing past problems with present ones, the author draws attention to theA) significance of this crisis B) inadequacy of governmentC) similarity of the past to the present D) hopelessness of. the situation4.. What contribution does the author feel people must now make.*A) Search for new energy sources. B) Outlaw motor transportationC)Accept a new lifestyle D)Adopt a new form of government.5 .The word “revival ( Sentence 2, Para. 3) most probably means “_________”.A) survival B) destructionC ) removalD )comebackPassage 3The forest from which man takes his timber is the tallest and most impressive plant community on Earth. In terms of man' s brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, but to the forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events. No wooded landscape we see today has been forest for all time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth's surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions in favor of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession.First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock. Slowly, the acids produced by these organisms crack the rock surface,, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root-hold. Ferns may follow and, with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination---closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years.Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroy its outright and settlers may cut it d own to gain land for pasture or cultivation. Of course the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing much faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals. For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine storing energy and many elements essential for life.1. Why does the forest strike mankind as permanent?A)The trees are so tall. B).It is renewed each season.C) Our lives are short in comparison. D) It is an essential part of our lives.2. What has sometimes caused plants to die out in the past?A) Interference from foresters. B) Variations in climate.C) The absence of wooded land. D) The introduction of new types of plants.3. What condition is needed for shrubs to become established in the "secondary succession''?A)Ferns must take root.B) Their seeds were carried to the abandoned land.C) More soil must accumulate.D) The ground must be covered with grass.5. Why is a "secondary succession" ( Para. 4) quicker?A) The ground is more suitable. B) There is more space for new plants.C) Birds and animals bring new seeds. D) It is supported by the forest.Passage 4The chief purpose of work is not to produce things but to build the man, It is not so important what shape or form our work may take; what is vitally important is our attitude toward that work..Even if the particular duty is one which doesn't seem worth doing, if you must do it, it is important to do it right. Even if no one else will ever know whether you did it right or not, you will know. By making a commitment (承诺) to quality work, you make a commitment to yourself to develop your abilities and self-respect, to do the best you can do and be the best you can be. When you do as little as possible or just enough to get by, you are not merely cheating your employer, your customers, your clients, and your co-workers, but most importantly, you cheat yourself. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to develop pride and self-worth. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to meet a challenge and develop your own inner powers and abilities. You may be able to get away with cheating others, but you never get away with cheating yourself. Thus, the key is a commitment to yourself to use every possible opportunity for self-development and treat every work assignment, no matter how small or boring, as a challenge that can be used in your development.Work is a projection (投影) of self. Consciousness (感觉、意识)can regard any job as a potential opportunity for self-expression, for play, for creativity, for the furtherance(推动)of social objectives, and it can arrange the factors in the job so that they form a means of self-expression.Most jobs contain at least some limited options for creativity. To the extent that any job can be done in different ways, the job presents you with an opportunity to project your unique abilities and values into that job. Any type of communication, written or spoken, presents a significant opportunity for creative expression. Even if your efforts are reviewed and must be toned down tofit into the mold (模型) of your organization, there is always a slight opening through which you can project your unique personality. Use these opportunities to express and confirm your existence.1. The most important thing about work is ____________.A. to produce thingsB. the shape one's work takesC. the amount of money it makesD. one's attitude towards the work2. If the work doesn't seem worth doing, you should ___________.A. give it upB. tell others to do itC. stop in the middleD. perform it carefully3. What can work assignments offer people?A. Which of the following statements is not true?A. Sometimes you have to adjust yourself to your work.B. There is space for you to show your creativity.C. Work must be done in one way in order to be the most efficientD. You may never cheat yourself.5. The main idea of the passage isA. how to improve your creativityB. the importance of projecting your values into your jobC. when to express yourselfD. how to change one's personalityPassage 5Human migrations (移居国外) within recorded history have transformed the entire character of lands and continents and the composition of their racial, ethnic and language groups. The map of Europe, for example, is the product of several major early migrations involving the Germanic peoples, the Slavs, and the Turks. The overseas migration of Europeans during this period totaled about 60 million people. The largest migration in history has been called the Great Atlantic Migration from Europe to North America, the first major wave of which began in the 1840s with mass movements from Ireland and Germany. In the 1880s a second and larger wave developed from eastern and southern Europe; between 1880 and 1910 some 17 million Europeans entered the United States. The total number of Europeans reaching the United States amounted to 37 million between 1820 and 1980. From 1801 to 1914 about million people moved from European to Asiatic Russia ., Siberia), and between World Wars I and II about 6 million more chose to move there, not counting the vast number of deportees who were forced to go to Siberia's labor camps. Since World War II the largest migrations have involved groups from developing countries moving to the industrialized nations. Some 13 million people moved across borders to become permanent residents of Western Europe from the 1960s through the 1980s, and more than 10 million permanent immigrants were admitted legally to the United States in that same period, with illegal immigration adding several millions more.Slave migrations and mass expulsions also have been part of human history for thousands of years. The largest slave migrations were probably those compelled by European slave traders operating in Africa from the 16th to the 19th century; perhaps 20 million slaves were taken to the Americas, though a large number died in terrible conditions of the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. The largest mass expulsions (驱逐) have probably been those imposed by Nazi Germany, whichdeported 7 to 8 million persons during World War II (1939-45). The major trend in internal migration during the 20th century has been the movement from rural to urban areas. As a consequence, urban growth since World War II has been very rapid in much of the world, particularly in developing countries.1.What is the main idea of the passage?A. The map of Europe is the product of several major early migrations.B. Human migrations within recorded history have changed the world.C. The overseas migration of Europeans totaled about 60 million peopleD. The first major wave of migration began in the 1840s.2. From Ireland and France.5. What has been the trend of migration during the 20th century?A. The movement from rural to urban areas.B. The movement from urban to rural areas.C. The movement from Europe to America.D. The movement from Africa to America.Passage 6Somebody ought to defend the workaholic. These people are unjustly accused, abused, and defamed--often termed sick or morbid.One-third of American business and commerce is carried on the shoulders of workaholics. The ratio might exist in art and science too.Workaholics are the achievers, the excellent. There is a national conspiracy against excellence-------an undue admiration of commonness and mediocrity. It is as though we are against those who make uncommon sacrifices because they enjoy doing something. Some popular psychologists say that the workaholic has an inferiority complex which leads to overcompensation. This is certainly not the case. Inferiority, or low esteem, describes laziness more accurately than it describes dedication. We do not seem to realize that very little excellence is achieved by living a well-balanced life. Edison, Ford, Einstein, Freud all had single-minded devotion to work whereby they sacrificed many things, including family and friendship. The accusation is made that workaholics bear guilt by not being good parents or spouses. But guilt can exist m the balanced life also. Consider how many "normal" people find, at middle-age, that they have never done anything well, they are going to settle to less than what they could have become.1. From this passage we know that workaholic is a term referring to those___________.A)who enjoy work more than anything elseB)who make greater contributions than othersC) who make uncommon sacrifices in their personal lifeD)all of the above2. The author's main concern in this passage is to __________.A) point out the role the workaholic plays in the American economyB) defend people who are addicted to workC) encourage us not to worry about our imperfectionD) consider the difficulties that confront as at middle-age3. The author of this passage would most likely agree that the workaholic____________.A)is mentally ill.B) performs an insignificant proportion of American business.C)will not have the regrets that many "normal" people face at middle-age.D) suffers from low self-esteem.4. According to this passage, ___________.A) Freud led a well-balanced lifeB) generally speaking, workaholics can be helpedC)workaholics should be admiredD)so-called "normal" people are truly the sick people among us5. According to the author, one can hardly achieve excellence unless one __________.A) lives as abnormal live B) sacrifices friendship and familyC) has total devotion to work D) ignores popular opinionsPassage 7Evaluating employee performance is a key of management skills. The challenge is to give the employees an accurate picture of chief accomplishments, and of the areas in which they need to improve. Both are important accomplishments because they give the employee a sense of pride in the work and basis on which to build future achievements, and areas for improvement, because they give the employee some goals to roach for.Often, employees fear that the evaluation will be a negative experience. This fear alone can engender defensiveness and tension, which result in a serf-fulfilling prediction. Thesupervisor must take pains to relieve the employee's fear and make the evaluation a participatory event. An employee who contributes ideas to his or her evaluation will be much more likely to agree with the outcome and be willing to follow the recommendations. The employees must always bear in mind that the sole legitimate domain of an employee appraisal system is to improve employees' performance. While areas needing improvement must be reviewed, this should always be done in the spirit of discovering goals that the employee can work toward. This holds true for reviewing successes as well. While praise for past achievements may be used as reward, to engender loyalty, or for other reasons, at the time of evaluation, the primary reason to look at the person's successes is to determine areas in which he or she can continue to excel; perhaps, the most effective way to make the evaluation a participatory event is to ask the employee to come prepared to the meeting. The employer and the employee each should carefully review the job description prior to the evaluation meeting and should make notes on areas in which the employee had difficulty or has made a contribution. At the evaluation meeting, the employer must establish a positive and comfortable mood. The employee should be invited to review and comfortable mood. The employee should be invited to review his or her lists first. Almost always the employee's notes will be very similar to what the employer has written. If the employer simply verifies what the employee has said, the employee will be much less anxious about the procedure, and much more likely to work toward the goals.1. Evaluation is often a negative experience because __________.A) the employee has defend himselfB) the employee is tense and the employer does not relieve thisC) the employee has done a bad jobD) the employer is going to give up employee some goals that he cannot reach2. Evaluation should focus on ___________.A) accomplishments B) areas that need improvementC) a sense of pride in the work D) both A) and B)3. One way to relieve employee's anxiety is ___________.A) to set easy goalsB) to ask the employee to contribute ideasC) to praise the employee's success but say nothing of what he has not doneD) not to invite the employee to the meeting4. The sole legitimate domain of evaluation is to ___________.A) improve employees' performanceB) tell employees how well they have doneC) gain participation in the processD) tell employees what they should have done5. The key to participatory evaluation is that both parties ___________.A) are comfortable in the settingB) get to talkC) contribute ideas and agree on the outcomeD) know in which areas the employee has made a contributionPassage 8Every day, we are influenced by mass media. Although some critics of the media claim that these means of communication are used mostly to control our thinking and get us to buy products we don't need, they agree that the media also contributes to keeping people informed. In other words, while risks do exist, the benefits of the media are far more than the disadvantages. Most of the messages are designed either to inform or entertain—and neither of these goals can be considered risky or harmful. If consumers of the media could be taught at an early age to examine messages critically, ., to think carefully about what is being communicated—they would be able to take advantage of the information and enjoy the entertainment without being hurt by it. The key to critical thinking is recognizing the motives of the news item or writers, the advertisers, and so on. Are both sides of the issue being presented'? Have enough facts about the product being advertised been presented?Furthermore, citizens need the opportunity to hear news, opinions, and public affairs. Information about current events is presented in depth on publicly funded TV channels and radio stations as well as in newspapers. In addition, the public broadcasting media can help viewers and listeners to complete their education. Recent immigrants, for example, can improve their command of English through TV and radio, and in addition, some college courses are taught on educational television.Another recognized advantage of the media is that it gives people information they need for their daily lives: weather and traffic reports are good examples. While commercials and advertising do not necessarily present accurate information, they do make people aware of the availability of products that could improve their lives. In addition, they create a larger demand for some items, which may lead to a fall in their price. While the media can be a valuable means of educating the public, when most people turn on the TV set or the radio, they want to be entertained. As a result most programming consists of movies, plays, music, humorous shows, game shows, and sports events. Some of these offerings are of low quality, but on the other hand, many are fun to watch and interestingly written and well presented.Even though the mass media can be misused, most of its effects are positive. We are all influenced by television, and radio as well as movies, magazines and newspapers. If we are careful to examine their message critically they can all be of benefit to our lives.1. What is the main point of the author?A. Advertising is harmful when it presents inaccurate information.B. The positive effects of the mass media are more than the negative ones.C. People should learn to take advantage of the media's benefits.D. Television is more useful as a means of entertainment than as a means of providinginformation.2. According to the author, the two main purposes of mass media are to_____________.A. control our thinking and get us to buy useless productsB. provide people with information and entertainmentC. make people aware of the availability of products and create a large demand for someitemsD. express the views of the public and help improve recent immigrants' English3. The author feels that consumers of the mass media should be taught at an early age to___________.A. bring their imagination into full play when watching programs of low qualityB. buy products advertised in commercials so that the demand increasesC. turn off the TV set when a ridiculous program comes onD. think critically about the messages brought to them4. It can be learned from paragraph 3 that citizens will be in a better position to express their views and make their choices if they are ___________.A.highly educated through TV and radioB. well protected by the governmentC. highly paid by their employersD. well informed by the media5. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?A. The mass media offers information needed in our daily lives.B. Publicly funded broadcasting does not present information about current wants indepth.C. Information provided by commercials and advertising is always accurate.D. Many TV and radio programs are not interesting.Passage 9When dining in restaurants, Americans usually order drinks first, then soup, salad, main course or entree, and dessert at last. This is somewhat a different order way from that in Europe.Until about the middle of the nineteenth century, Americans didn't have to worry about whether the salad came before, or after the main course since they didn' t eat salad at all. Chomping on greens was once considered sissy, and Americans preferred to get their greens indirectly, after they had been processed by rabbits or deer. The shift of public taste toward the salad may be attributed to New York's Delmonico brothers, who originally introduced smorgasbord from Europe, and served it in their restaurant. Such novelties became so popular that by the end of the nineteenth century, the Waldorf salad has swept the country.Europeans still chomp on greens after the main course, as a way of clearing the palate, and being ready for the cheese. Why Americans eat their salad first is uncertain. The following joking suggestions might make sense: the custom may be related to the slimming craze, for "salad first" may fill you up without any worry about fattening; to avoid customers' impatience with waiting, the restaurant serves salad first to keep them busy while the main courses are being prepared; eating raw food while one is waiting for the cooked food may be a way of announcing that one is not wasting time, which is seen as a virtue; or probably unfair to the restaurant, this custom has been encouraged by the merchant as a trick--the meagreness of a meal is less noticeable if it comes after "free" salad-after all, rabbit food is much cheaper than the rabbit.1. In American restaurants, people are usually served in the order of __________.A) soup, salad, main course, drinks and dessertB) drinks, salad, main course, soup and dessertC) drinks, soup, salad, main course and dessertD) drinks, soup, main course, salad and dessert2. Before the middle of the nineteenth century, ____________.A) Americans ate the salad before the main courseB) Americans ate the salad after the main courseC) Americans ate the salad either before or after the main courseD) Americans didn't eat the salad at all3. The sentence "Americans preferred to get their greens indirectly, after they had been。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggestedanswers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer toeach question.Passage 1In the United States many have been told that anyone can become rich and successful if he works hard and has some good luck.Yes, when one becomes rich he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That’s what “Keeping up with the Joneses” is about. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand. Momand looked around him andnoticed that many people do things to keep up with their neighbors; they try to look as rich and as successful as their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping Up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping Up with the Joneses”cam e to mean keeping up with the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. That is one reason why they read the “right” books, go to the “right” universities and eat in the “right” restaurants.Every city has an area where people want to live because others will think better of them if they do. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses, because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.16. Why, according to the passage, do many people try to keep up withthe JonesesA. Because they want to be as rich as their neighbors.B. Because they feel proud to be taken for the Joneses.C. Because they want others to know or think they are rich.D. Because they are afraid that others will know they are rich.17. Why did Arthur Momand use the name “Jones” in his storiesA. Because many rich people in the U. S. are named Jones.B. Because few rich people in the U. S. are named Jones.C. Because the name sounds funny and impressive.D. Because there are many people in the U. S. whose familyname is Jones.18. What does the author refe r to when he says the “right” booksA. Books that other people around are reading.B. Books that teach people how to get rich and successful.C. Books by famous and successful writers.D. Very expensive books.19. What does the author mean by “Mr. Jon es always seems to be ahead”A. It seems Mr. Jones is always walking ahead of others.B. It seems one can never keep up with all people around.C. It seems Mr. Jones is a very rich man.D. It seems one has to work very hard to get rich.20. What is th e author’s opinionA. It is funny to try to keep up with the Joneses.B. It is necessary to keep up with the Joneses.C. It is hard to keep up with the people around you.D. It is senseless to try to keep up with the people around you.Passage 2The human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do.The left side of the brain controls language and number; it analyses and reasons. The right side controls our imagination; it controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar. They both use the two sides of their brains. It is well-known that Albert Einstein (1879–1955), as a great scientist, also enjoyed art, playing theviolin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer’s day while sitting on a hill. He imagined he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve. He got this idea by using his imagination. He then used the left side of brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it.Traditional, established education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don’t we give more value to visual thinkingIn fact, we all need both sides of our brains. We need to use our imaginations to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day.21. According to the passage, the left side of the brain ________.A) controls language and numberB) controls our imaginationC) daydreamsD) controls our sense of rhythm22. What does the author want to show by using the example of EinsteinA) Great scientists are also great artists.B) The left side of Einstein’s brain is very powerful.C) Einstein is a genius whose two sides of the brain are strong.D) The two sides of the brain are equally important.23. What do we learn about Einstein from the passageA) He could play the violin well.B) He said his scientific discoveries are acquired by analysisrather than by daydreaming.C) He was the first person to discover the track of the sun.D) He was disgusted at language.24. What does the author mean by saying “we are encouraged to hopwhen we have two perfectly good legs” (Para. 4)A)We needn’t hop because we are hea lthy.B)Only those who have something wrong in their legs can beencouraged to hop.C)It’s foolish of us to hop when we have two perfectly good legs.D)We should use both sides of the brain.25. The author believes that the right side of our brain is asimportant as the left side because ________.A) it controls our appreciation of music and sense of rhythmB) it enables us to make scientific discoveriesC) it is more important to analyze and organize in order to surviveD) the imaginations may provide solutions to problems and enableus to enjoy emotional and artistic experiencesPassage 3Do parents owe their children anything Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for self-esteem (自尊心) is the basis of a good mental health. A youngster, who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing, that he (or she) won’t try at all. Of course, they sh ould be corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it’s like being in a car without brakes (刹车). The parent who says “No”when other parents say “Yes” sends a double message. He is also saying: “I love you, and I am ready torisk your anger, be cause I don’t t want you to get into trouble”.Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a mother feels t hat she must read her daughter’s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents own their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees hisparents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him his due, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.26. According to the passage, parents owe their children the followingthings except .A. carsB. privacyC. respect of selfD. information about their body27. The writer thinks that teenagers are frightened when they are incharge of themselves because ________________________________.A. they don’t know how to stop a car without brakesB. there is no one to guide and discipline themC. they are afraid of being left aloneD. there is no one to ask for help when in trouble28. It is better to compare a youngster to his brighter brothersbecause it makes him try harder.Passage 4In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 a.m. Several arrived after 10:30 a.m. Two students came after 11 a.m. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude He decided to study the students’ behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in university calls, respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If theyhad a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student showed clearly lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student would be 33 minutes late.In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at thescheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. Arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.31. Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions:Read the following four passages carefully and answer the questions below each passage by choosing A, B, C or D. Markyour answers on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular again. The president of Trinity College in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in a women's college a higher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women.Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women's college, women feel freer to say what they think. Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a women's college every governing office is held by a woman. Recent studies reportedly show that this leadership continues after college. The studies show Americanwomen who went to women's colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life.16. The title of this passage is most likely to be ______.A) Women Education in the United StatesB) Women's Schools in the United StatesC) Women Should Be Given the Same Education as MenD) Education in AmericaPassage 2In 1848, gold was discovered in California; from all over the nation, thousands of young men set out for California. People called this the time of the Gold Rush.A gold miner came into a city looking for a pair of pants. He wanted pants strong enough to stand up to the rough work of mining. He met a young man named Levi, who sold heavy cloth for tents and wagon tops. They asked a tailorto use heavy cloth for their pants. Then Levi went into the business of making work pants. He asked his brothers to send him some strong blue cotton cloth called denim (斜纹粗棉布). With this blue denim cloth, Levi started making the kind of pants we call blue jeans today. They were sewed up in the same way as other pants. In 1860, a miner said that the pockets weren't strong enough to hold the pieces of gold he found. The pockets kept pulling loose from the pants. The cloth was all right. It was the thread that wasn't strong enough. So Levi used rivets (铆钉) to attach the pockets onto the pants.Cowboys needed tough pants, too. They liked their pants to fit tightly. But the rivets marked the cowboys' saddles. So Levi covered the rivets with cloth. Then everybody was happy.21. This article as a whole is about ___________.A) how people got blue jeans B) the Gold RushC) denim, rivets and blue jeans D) cowboys and blue jeans22. To show their respect for him, the British lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons (下议院).It was reported in the newspapers to show that Churchill accepted the gift. He described the painting as "a remarkable example of modern art", which drew loud laughter. In fact he was unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether it was to be painted in with a "happy" or "fierce" attitude. "Fierce," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career. Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland is a very honest artist, who could only paint what he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could have been stored away until after their deaths.26. Why did the British lawmakers ask Graham Sutherland to paint a pictureof Winston Churchill?A. To show their respect for him.B. To make Churchill happy.C. To put it in the Westminster hall.D. To make Churchill unhappy.27. Where was the painting given to Winston Churchill after it was finished?A. At his home.B. What is the author's attitude towards the destruction of the painting?A. Approval.B. Disapproval.C. Anger.D. Indifference.Passage 4Internet, E-mail and similar electronic connections offer a far wider ground for scholarly communication, because a researcher can post the beginning of a theory, receive comments on it from peers, incorporate new ideas and alter the details over and over until it is right. Electronic networks enable scholarly publishing to imitate the intellectual process more closely. The unit of transaction will become the idea, not just a collection of articles. This dynamic, fluid progression of an idea-which is known as "scholarly sky-writing" is possible, Harnad says, because the speed and reach of electronic messaging "more closely match the natural biological speed of human thought". When he writes a paper, says Harnad, he is able instantly to incorporate the forces of the Net into the creative process. In one part of his computer will be E-mailed comments from colleagues, in another will be his own notes, in yet another his previous papers-and at any time, he can launch into the Net to find a new resource or paper, send off a thought to a commentator or ask a question, all as if they were in the same room. This new form of scholarship could cause problem with copyrights, however. With so many voices involved in production of a new idea, it is more difficult than ever to pin down exactly who should receive credit for it.Some scholars believe that the storage of documents as disembodied electronic signals will gradually alter the structure of knowledge. "Manuscripts" will increasingly be "live", changing from day to day as the author returns to the computer and other scholars offer their comments in the margins. It will be possible to update and message documents without increased cost, so that- in some fields, at least- the notion of a bound book could become obsolete. Even the idea of authorship could change. In the long run, the new information technology may fundamentally alter creativity itself. Nowadays, much of the process of scholarship-the testing of anidea and the subsequent peer commentary - takes place in private; only the publication of a final manuscript is a public event. Then, what about scientific journals? They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore ,it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care. When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitious, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose.。

b.Spoiling a child also happens when parents are unable to stand up to their children's unreasonable demands. Such parents fluctuate between saying no and giving in — but neither response seems satisfactory to them. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. A) Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.B) Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.C) People’s stereotyped attitude toward female scientists..D) Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.4.Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?A) Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.B) Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.C) Her female students can do just as well as male students.D) More female students are pursuing science than before..5.What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A) Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.B) Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.C) Women can balance a career in science and having a family..D) Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.Exercises for NHCE-2 Unit3&4I.Fill in the blanks with the word or phrases you have learned.11Like most married couples we've had our , but life is like that.12They'd never such poor service before.13He's a thief and a liar; I'd with him, if I were you.14This problem over late paying has shown him .15We were shocked when we his sudden death.16 it doesn't rain we can play.17She has some terrible experiences.18You certainly when you said that he was lazy.19Don't more than you can deal with.20The plan had to be cancelled for money.Translationa.1当地政府将毫不犹豫的采取最严厉的措施对付犯罪分子。
