Today in our series ‘Who on Earth are we?’ Marc Beeby examines the differences between individual andcollective based cultures. If you’re someone who likes privacy, your own space,making your own decisions, you probably belong to a culture where theindividual is central. But if you like to have other people around you, and feelthe need to ‘do the right thing’, your culture is probably one where the group -or the ‘collective’ - is the most important unit. Here’s Marc:Marc: This individual/collective distinction is very important in the study of culture, and we’ll be considering it in detail over the next two programmes. So, tobegin here’s Rebecca Fong - a teacher of intercultural communication at theUniversity of the West of England - with an introduction to the ‘individualism /collectivism dimension’.Rebecca FongThe individualism / collectivism dimension or model, if you like, refers to the relationship between any individual in a society to any group or collective in that society - now what do we mean by collective? A collective could be a small group such as a family or a workplaceor a group of friends or a club or it could be big groups like an individual's relationship to the nation as a whole. Obviously how you are brought up and integrated into your society andlive together with the people in your society will very much affect the way that your society's organised, the way families live together, the way institutions work the way education, politics and religion are organised and so on.Marc: Rebecca Fong. The way you live together with the people in your society will affect the way your society is organised. People in both individualist andcollectivist cultures belong to groups, but the difference lies in whether peoplechoose to belong to a group, how they feel about the groups they belong to, andhow important an influence the group has on a person’s life. Here’s Rebeccaagain, with comments from Devon Krohn from England and EmmaKambangula from Namibia, on the connections between the individual and thegroup in individualist and collectivist cultures.Rebecca FongIn individualist cultures people are linked together very loosely. They are brought up to follow their own individual goals and their own preferences and everyone in the society is rewarded differently according to what they personally manage to achieve. So they'll make choices about which work groups they belong to who their friends are which religion they want to belong to which clubs they want to belong to and so on. This may mean that people don't have very much loyalty to any particular group, so they could switch company for example if they felt that their personal growth in one particular company had come to an end and in order to develop they would have to move to another company and do something different.Devon KrohnI think in terms of whether Britain is a very individualistic society I would agree. My family for example is very separate - it works well as a family unit but I'd say first and foremost we are individuals and then we are a family unit. My mother brought me up to be very individual and she deemed that as a very important quality in life so from a very early age I was taught to look after myself and to go out and do my own things, take initiatives and do what I wanted to doRebecca FongIn collectivist cultures people's own personal preferences are downplayed and their loyalty is first and foremost to a group or a collective. So what happens is that the group goals become the most important thing and people act in accordance with the duties of any particular collective that they're in. You'll probably have a very strong affiliation with your family group not by choice but because that's part of how your society is organised and it'll be veryimportant that within these groups you work together and there'll be a mutual search for a collective harmony within these groups.Emma KambangulaIn Namibia, we are more collective. I’ll take an example of me and my sister. I remember there was a time that we didn’t speak to each other – when my other sister’s husband died. We went to the funeral and the family was called together to solve Emma and her sister’s problem. We were speaking and it came to the extent where we got at loggerheads with my sister again and they had to intervene, take us separately to different rooms and everyone gave their side of the story and discussed it in our absence among the other members of the family and when we were called together it was like we were in court and everyone had questions until we reached an agreement.Marc:Emma KambangulaBut why should some cultures value the individual while others value thegroup? Well, some cultural experts believe that there are historical reasons forthis. Rebecca Fong explains, with assistance from Professor James Keeganfrom Bethany College in the United States of America, and Mahmoud Jamalfrom Pakistan.Rebecca FongIt has been suggested that individualist cultures may have started as the hunter gatherer type societies who had to be more self sufficient who had to survive at all costs and therefore became quite aggressive in their approach, more competitive.James Keegan250 years ago, this would be the frontier, you know, and you existed in the way in which you could look after yourself. Yes, there might be neighbours around, but they’re not going to be all that close. And you build your log cabin, and you use it as a fort, you go out and till your little bit of land. So, historically, the individual takes care of him or herself.Rebecca FongCollectivist cultures may have started more as the agrarian societies - more peaceful collectives of people living on the land, farming together, working together, sharing resources and so on.Mahmoud JamalOn the whole South Asian culture is not a greatly individualistic culture. Of course things have changed and are changing very rapidly but there's the family, the extended family, the community.You as an individual have responsibilities and duties to the collective and you have to uphold them regardless. But I think the modern industrialised world is impacting on that - so it is breaking down but on the whole I think it still remains true that the individual is less important than the community in South Asian culture as a whole, in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.Marc: Mahmoud Jamal. Cultures change, and nowadays it's hard for us to see whethera culture was based on a ‘frontier’ type of society, where the individual wasforced to take care of himself, or on a more co-operative ‘farming’ model. Butwe can say that much of the modern industrial world - the USA and parts ofEurope for example - tends to be ‘individualistic’. What’s more, as MahmoudJamal suggests, the individualistic modern industrial world seems to beinfluencing the character of some collective cultures. We’ll be exploring thisidea a bit further in our next programme. In preparation, here are Annabel Portfrom Britain, Mounia el-Kouche from Morocco and James Keegan in the USAhelping Rebecca Fong describe some of the more obvious differences betweenindividualist and collectivist cultures.Rebecca FongIndividuals in individualistic societies will be looking for individual freedom. They'll be looking for personal truth, their own personal ideal of what is sincere and real, they'll be looking for money and success, they'll be looking for personal goals, personal objectives to be fulfilled.Annabel PortI think Britain is very individualistic - I think it starts with the family and it goes on through education and through to the workplace in business because we want more we've become very competitive - constantly striving to improve ourselves and competing against the next person and not necessarily working together for a common aim.Rebecca FongIn the collectivist societies there'll be much greater need for social harmony and action as defined by other people - virtuous action, action that will be accepted and approved of by a group and there'll be a lot of loyalty within those groups.Mounia El KoucheThe family are very much involved in your life - you can't do anything without permission, in a sense, of your close siblings and parents. You can't just run away, get married and that’s it, be the end of it. You can’t have a girlfriend or boyfriend without your parents knowing and giving their approval. And they would give advice perhaps sometimes which you don’t want to hear but at the same time they think they're helping. Things like that would shock a Westerner in a sense.Rebecca FongPeople in collective groups get to understand each others personalities, each others roles in that group and they begin to communicate intuitively. Silence is much more an integral part of this kind of group because people know what's going on in another person's mind - you don't have to say everything that you're thinking. Communication amongst individuals in individualist societies tends to be quite verbal - you explain your feelings, what your opinion is is important and silence is in some ways quite embarrassing.James KeeganI think Westerners, and I’ll include Europeans in general in this, you know, we don’t like silences. We have to fill things in, particularly here in the United States, we begin to get edgy, we begin to want an answer immediately. Other cultures do observe a formality. We’re an informal society. In order to achieve your own individual purposes, you have to establish veryquick relationships. And an example of that is of course, how quickly we use first names. We know people and we treat them as if they were real long-time friends, and we’ve known them two minutes.Callum: Professor James Keegan.It's very important when talking about individualism and collectivism toremember that these are very broad categories. In fact, they are really the twoextreme ends of a long line. No culture really falls at either end. Cultures tendtowards one end or the other. So where does your culture fall along the line?Do you belong to a more individualist, or more collectivist culture? We’ll helpyou answer that question by looking at more of the differences between the twoin our next programme. But I’ll leave you with a final word from MahmoudJamal, who sees the benefits of both…Mahmoud JamalIn my case in the case of a lot of other people who came abroad to study part of the attraction also was to be able to live an individual life and you can never beat going to another culture to live an individual life because you are an alien anyway. I would recommend to a lot of people who feel that their culture or their community is bothering them to go to another culture, experience what it's like to be an individual.。

Now schools in the United Kingdom want to give their students a head start by teaching them Mandarin – and they are making it compulsory.Brighton College is a fee paying private school on the south coast of Britain and already teaches Latin, Spanish and French to its 1,200 pupils. Students can choose between these languages, but from the autumn, which is the beginning of the new academic year in British schools, every student must study Mandarin whether they like it or not.Richard Cairns, headmaster of Brighton College, describes the move as “all the more radical” as there is “only a handful” of native Chinese pupils studying at the College. Mr. Cairns is considered something of a radical himself as he too will begin Mandarin classes in September - as a pupil in an ordinary class of students. Cairns is convinced that teaching Mandarin is essential for his students that already have a good record in succeeding in business. With Mandarin added to a pupil’s portfolio, that record can be sustained and improved. He said: “One of my key tasks is to make sure pupils are equipped for the realities of the 21st century and one is that China has the fastest growing economy.”Brighton College is following a national trend as studying Chinese to the British A-level standard looks set to overtake Spanish and German, according to recent figures showing the number of students taking language examinations.The increase in popularity of Mandarin in comparison with Spanish has been the most surprising, with a 50 per cent increase since 2001 to 2,062 candidates last year. Spanish attracted 2,561. And over the years, I’ve helped or at least I hope I’ve helped, hundred of learners to improve their English. The English Makeover learners will be telling me about their problems and well…I’ll see what I can do to help.ANNOUNCER:Today's learner is Amanda But from Hong Kong.Clip: Amanda ButMy name is Amanda. I’m from Hong Kong. I’m Chinese, and I’m working as a marketing assistant for a company and I’m enjoying my job and I like do a lot of cycling in my spare time, and it’s good here in London because I have a lot of opportunity to meet different friends who come from different countries…Vicki:In London, Amanda has got friends from lots of different countries and she uses English with them. She’s also studying English, to help her work in the marketing office where I went to meet her.Clip: Vicki interviews Amanda about her English language skillsAMANDA: I’m studying two English evening classes at the moment. One is spoken English, another one is writing course and it’s great because at work I use a lot of my English skills but it’s mainly related to what I’m doing but I don’t think I have enough time or enough chancesto talk to my colleagues, for example about movies, concerts or just other leisure programmes. In my classes I have English native speaker as a teacher and I also have other classmates from the rest of the world.VICKI: So you’re in London, you’re working in marketing here and you’re also studying English on a course in the evening. How long have you actually been living in Britain? AMANDA: About three years and a half.VICKI: And why did you decide to come to Britain?AMANDA: Oh well, that's a story. Actually, I met my husband in Hong Kong and we married. And I went with him and he got a job and I came with him, that's why I'm here in London. VICKI: How long have you actually been learning English? Did you learn English in Hong Kong originally?AMANDA: Yes indeed. I think I started learning English from my primary school which is about age 8 or 9.VICKI: When you first came to Britain did you find it difficult speaking English orTalk about English © BBC Learning EnglishPage 2 of 5understanding people?AMANDA: Yes, definitely. I'm very interested in the pop music, especially the Britain's famous bands. However, having said that I can't pick a lot of conversations from my friends or even at work or after work. The only thing that I understand English is through the pop songs. I think first of all it stopped me communicating with people a lot, because once you have an accent (of course, I'm Chinese and I have a Chinese accent)… sometimes people hesitate a little in response to my questions or my conversation, and that stopped me to communicate with them afterwards because I think they don't understand me, and meanwhile I don't understand the accent as well.VICKI: OK, so what specific problems do you think you have with your English? AMANDA: I think I have many problems in English. First of all sometimes I feel quite nervous when I talk to a native English speaker, especially my manager because sometimes I feel I don’t know the English style I’m speaking is correct or is a lot of mistakes. So I hesitated, and when you hesitated you won’t say in a fluent way. So sometimes I feel I’m just not very natural when I talk to native speakers… Secondly, I also have some problems with grammar because I always confuse when to use singular or when to use plurals.Also, I have problems with long sentences. As long as I'm learning English I always make the short sentences longer than I expected, and that makes the meaning very confused. So I think I’m just writing short sentences with other linking words and that actually making the sentence looking worse not better.VICKI: So when you’re writing you use linking words to try and make your English sound more sophisticated really. But sometimes you run into problems, because you get confused about what the meaning of the sentence is.AMANDA: Yeah.Vicki:You’ve just heard marketing assistant Amanda But from Hong Kong talking about her English problems with fluency in speech and joining sentences in writing. So what does the English Makeover adviser, Karen Adams think?Clip: Vicki talks to Karen Adams about Amanda's language problemsTalk about English © BBC Learning EnglishPage 3 of 5KAREN: Well, first of all when we look at the problems that Amanda spoke about with speaking skills, it’s very interesting that she says that she doesn’t have enough time to chat with people in her course and then later she says she’s a little bit nervous about talking with her boss. I think this is all part of the same problem. It’s feeling comfortable listening and speaking in conversation and what I would recommend that Amanda does is to try to make some time just to relax and chat with friends. Try to find out for example some of the things her friends have done at the weekend, find out about their interests, ask them questions and listen to them and respond. Because building up that ability to have a conversation in a very informal way, will help her confidence when she has to go and speak with her boss.VICKI: So by speaking more informally with people, she’ll gain that confidence to do so without worrying so much?KAREN: Yes. I think we have to recognise that when Amanda’s speaking with her boss basically there are two authority figures. Her boss is her manager but may also be a native English speaker so she may feel under double the pressure to speak correctly, when in fact this can be a big inhibitor. It can actually stop you speaking effectively if you feel nervous. So we’re really looking at a way of building Amanda’s confidence.Now the second problem she spoke about was actually creating long sentences and this is something that learners often have problems with. And you often find that we use the word‘and’ to create longer and longer sentences, rather than thinking about exactly what we want the long sentence to do. Now what I would recommend that Amanda does is actually read a little bit more and take the opportunity to look at a text in a bit more detail, particularly let’ s say texts involved with the work that she does. Look at the length of the sentences for example. Are there normally long sentences in the texts dealing with her work? Because if there aren’t maybe she doesn’t have to worry. If there are she needs to look at how they are put together. How many different ideas are there? What are the connecting words? Can she create three sentences out of one long sentence? So, basically, she has to deconstruct the sentence, take it apart, see if she can put it back together again.VICKI: She doesn’t necessarily have to cut out all her long sentences but she just has to think carefully about how they are put together, whether they actually make sense by the time she’s strung lots of bits of sentences together.KAREN: Yes, because it may be that normally, in her line of work, people would use much shorter sentences anyway.Vicki:Advice there from teacher, Karen Adams. Have plenty of relaxed chats about and find out what really interests them.On another note, when you write, perhaps you’re not sure about the best way to link sentences. Study texts, perhaps texts related to your work such as business letters or reports. Notice the kind of sentences used. Are they mostly long or short? What kind of connecting words are used to join the sentences together? Take them apart and see if you can put them back together again.Try out that advice and see if it works for you.
