第一篇What’s killing the BatsFirst it was bees. Now it is bats. Biologists in America are working hard to discover the cause of the mysterious deaths of tens of thousands of bats in the northeastern part of the country. Most of the bats affected are the common little brown bats (Myotis lucifiigus,)but other species, such as the long-eared bat, the small-footed bat,the eastern pipistrelle, and the Indiana bat have also been affected. In some caves, more than 90 percent of the bat populations have died. One possibility is disease. A white fungus (真菌)known as fusarium has been found on the noses of both living and dead bats. However, scientists don’t know if the fungus is the primary cause of death, a secondary cause of death,or not a cause at all, but the result of some other conditions.Another possible cause is a lack of food. For example, bats typically eat a large number of moths (蛾),and in some states such as New York, the number of moths has been declining in recent years. If bats can’t eat enough food, they starve to death.Still other scientists believe that global wanning is to blame. Warmer temperatures in recent years have been walking up hibernating (冬目民)bats earlier than usual. If bats break their hibernation at the wrong time, they might not find their expected food sources. The weather might also turn cold again and weaken or kill the bats.Scientists might not agree on the causes of the bat die-off,but they do agree on the consequences. Bats are an important predator of mosquitoes; a single brown bat can eat 1,000 or more insects in an hour. They also eat beetles and other insects that damage plant crops. If there aren’t enough bats, damage will be great from the insects they eat while bats live a long time for their size---the little brown bat can live for more than 30 years---a female bat has only one baby per year, so bat populations grow slowly. Many bat species in the United States are already protected or endangered. How can you help? Do not disturb sleeping or nesting bats. If you discover bats that seem to be sick or that are dead, contact your lock Fish&Wildlife Department with the details. However, be careful not to touch the animals.29. what is the main idea of this passage?A. All species of bats in North America are dying.B. Scientists already know the cause of the deaths of batsC. The bat deaths are a serious problemD. There are many possible causes of the deaths of bats.30. What does the first sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Bees have been dying mysteriouslyB. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A. to get people to stop killing batsB. to hire workers for the Fish&Wildlife DepartmentC. to ask people not to touch dead batsD. to tell the public how to help bats.第二篇Is There a Way to Keep Britain’s Economy Growing? In today’s knowledge economy, nations survive on the things they do best. Japanese design electronics while Germens export engineering techniques. The French serve the best food and Americans make computers.Britain specializes in the gift of talking. The nation doesn't manufacture much of anything. But it has lawyers, stylists and business consultants who earn their living from talk, talk and more talk. The World Foundation think tank1 says the UKfs four iconic jobs today are not scientists, engineers, teachers and nurses. Instead, they're hairdressers, celebrities, management consultants and managers. But can all this talking keep the British economy going? The British government thinks it can.Although the country’s trade deficit was more than £ 60 billion in 2006,UK's largest in the postwar period, officials say the country has nothing to worry about. In fact, Britain does have a world-class pharmaceutical industry, and it still makes a small sum from selling arms abroad. It also trades services —accountancy, insurance, banking and advertising. The government believes Britain is on the cutting edge2 of the knowledge economy. After all, the country of Shakespeare andWordsworth has a literary tradition of which to be proud. Rock “n” roll3 is an English language medium, and there are billions to be made by their cutting-edge bands. In other words, the creative economy has plenty of strength to carry the British economy. However, creative industries account for only about 4 percent of UICs exports of goods and services. The industries are finding it hard to make a profit, according to a report of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. The report shows only 38 percent of British companies were engaged in "innovation activities' 3 percentage points below the EU average and well below Germany (61 percent) and Sweden (47 percent). In fact,it might be better to call Britain a nservantM economy — there are at least 4 million people "in service". The majority of the population are employed by the rich to cook, clean, and take care of their children. Many graduates are even doing menial jobs for which they do not need a degree. Most employment growth has been, and will continue to be, at the low-skill end of the service sector 一in shops, bars, hotels, domestic service and in nursing and care homes.34. According to the World Foundation think tank, one of the iconic jobs in Britain today isA. law makersB. home servantsC. school teachersD. business consultants.35. The phrase “the cutting edge” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning toA. the most popularB. the mos丈 advancedC. the most politicalD. the proudest36. The officials are not worried about the trade deficit in 2006,because they believeA. Britain is on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy.B. Britain is home to the largest pharmaceutical industry in the world.C. the literary tradition of Britain will help make billions of pounds.D. the world economy is strong enough to carry the British economy.37. Which of the following is true about the creative industries in Britain?A. They are not doing as well as those in other European nations.B. They contribute a lot to the country’s trade d eficit.C. They can’t make a profit out of their innovative activities.D. They make Britain on the cutting edge of the knowledge economy.38. It can be inferred from the passage thatA. the gift of talking can keep the British economy growing.B. the British economy is the least innovative one in the EU.C. the British government is over-confident in its economy.D. being a servant to the rich is one of the best jobs in Britain.第三篇 The Sandwich GenerationToday people often look forward to their middle age as a time when they will be able to take things easier. After their children are grown, they expect to enjoy the life they have worked hard to create. However the reality is often very different. In middle age, many people discover that they have two ongoing responsibilities1: one is to look after their aging parents, and the other is to help their young adult children deal with the pressures of life. Around the world, there are millions of people who are “sandwiched” in between the older and the younger generations. Sometimes there may be two or three generations living in the same household — a situation that is common in many Asian countries and in some parts of Europe. In other cases, a couple may be taking care of parents and children, but they do not live with them. There are two important reasons for the rise of the sandwich generation. First, people are living longer than they used to. In the early nineteenth century, the average life expectancy for adults in the United States, for example, was about 40,whereas today people live to an average age of 75. Therefore, children are taking care of their parents over a longer period of time. The second reason is that these days, young adults often live with their parents for a longer time than they did in the past. This is often for financial reasons. It’s also more common for today’s young adults to return home during or after college if they need financial or emotional support.Young adults feel sandwiched between their financial responsibilities and their desire to enjoy life. They may have to cover expenses that their parents cannot. They may have to manage their parents’ financial and legal affairs. They may have to prepare for their parents’ future needs, such as special medical care or a move to a nursing home. This can be a traumatic experience for everyone.Caring for adult children presents challenges as well, and caregivers have to resolve important questions; How canfinancial responsibilities be shared among members of the household? How can household chores be shared? What is the best way to ensure everyone’s privacy? Successfully coping with these issues can avoid a lot of stress for the whole family. The financial and emotional pressures on the sandwich generation can be overwhelming. However, this time in life also has its rewards. It can be a time to rediscover the special qualities of one’s parents or children. It can also provide a valuable opportunity to spend more time with them. However,in order to survive this difficult period in their lives, the members of the sandwich generation must remember that they also need to pay attention to their own needs and look after the quality of their own lives. They can’t be totally selfless.39. According to the first paragraph, many people in middle ageA. are able to take things easier when their children are grown.B. can’t enjoy their life as they have expectedC. can’t enjoy their life because they haven’t worked hard enough.D. are facing great pressure from their work.40. Which is true about the sandwich generation?A. Their parents are unable to take care of themselves.B. Their parents are often facing the pressures of life.C. They are tom between the responsibilities for their parents and children.D. They all have to live with their parents and children.41. Why do some young adults choose to live with their parents these days?A. They are too young to be independent from their parents.B. They want to help their parents to take care of their aging grandparents.C. They need support from their parents to deal with their financial problems.D. They are more emotional than the young adults in the past.42. The Polynesian Voyaging Society had organised the expedition. Its purpose was to find out if seafarers (海员)in the distant past could have found their way from one island to the other without navigational instruments, or whether the islands had been populated by accident. At the time, Mau was the only man alive who knew how to navigate just by observing the stars, the wind and the sea.He had never before sailed to Tahiti, which was a long way to the south. However, he understood how the wind and the sea behave around islands, so he was confident he could find his way. The voyage took him and his crew a month to complete and he did it without a compass or charts. His grandfather began the task of teaching him how to navigate when he was still a baby. He showed him pools of water on the beach to teach him how the behaviour of the waves and wind changed in different places. Later, Mau used a circle of stones to memorise the positions of the stars. Each stone was laid out in the sand to represent a star. The voyage proved that Hawaii's first inhabitants came in small boats and navigated by reading the sea and the stars. Mau himself became a keen teacher, passing on his traditional secrets to people of other cultures so that his knowledge would not be lost. He explained the positions of the stars to his students, but he allowed them to write things down because he knew they would never be able to remember everything as he had done.16 At the time of his voyage, Mau had unique navigational skills.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:A17 Mau was familiar with the sea around Tahiti.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:B18 Mau could not afford a compass or charts.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:C19 Mau learnt navigation skills from his grandfather.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:A20 Mau used stones to memorise where the stars were situated in the sky.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:A21 The first inhabitants of Hawaii could read and writeA RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:C22 Mau expected his students to remember the positions of the stars immediatelyA RightB WrongC Not mentioned正确答案:B第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)下面的短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第1~4段每段1选择个最佳标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中为每个句子确定1个最佳选项。

+第十一篇 School Lunch 学校午餐Research has shown that over half the children in Britain who take their own lunches to school do not eat properly in the middle of the day. In Britain schools have to provide meals at lunchtime. Children can choose to bring their own food or have lunch at the school canteen. One shocking finding of this research is that school meals are much healthier than lunches prepared by parents. There are strict standards for the preparation of school meals, which have to include one portion of fruit and one of vegetables, as well as meat, a dairy item and starchy food like bread or pasta. Lunchboxes examined by researchers contained sweet drinks, crisps and chocolate bars. Children consume twice as much sugar as they should at lunchtime. The research will provide a better understanding of why the percentage of overweight students in Britain has increased in the last decade. Unfortunately, the government cannot criticise parents, but it can remind them of the nutritional value of milk, fruit and vegetables. Small changes in their children's diet can affect their future health. Children can easily develop bad eating habits at this age, and parents are the only ones who can prevent it.+第十二篇 A Powerful Influence 强大的影响There can be no doubt at all that the Internet has made a huge difference to our lives. Parents are worried that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly ever doing anything else in their spare time. Naturally, parents are curious to find out why the Internet is so attractive, and they want to know if it can be harmful to their children. Should parents worry if their children are spending that much time staring at their computers?Obviously; if children are bent over their computers for hours, absorbed in some game, instead of doing their homework, then something is wrong. Parents and children could decide how much use the child should make of the Internet, and the child should give his or her word that it won’t interfere with homework. If the child is not holding to this arrangement, the parent can take more drastic steps dealing with a child's use of the Internet is not much different from negotiating any other soft of bargain about behaviour.Any parent who is seriously alarmed about a child's behaviour should make an appointment to discuss the matter with a teacher. Spending time in front of the screen does not necessarily affect a child's performance at school. Even if a child is absolutely crazy about using the Internet,he or she is probably just going through a phase, and in a few months there will be something else to worry about!+第十三篇 The Old Gate 古老之门In the Middle Ages the vast majority of European cities had walls around them. This was partly for defensive reasons but another factor was the need to keep out anyone regarded as undesirable, like people with contagious diseases. The Old City of London gates were all demolished by the end of the 18th century. The last of London's gates was removed a century ago, but by a stroke of luck, it was never destroyed. This gate is, in actual fact, not called a gate at all; its name is Temple Bar, and it marked the boundary between the Old City of London and Westminster. In 1878 the Council of London took the Bar down, numbered the stones and put the gate in storage because its design was unfashionable it was expensive to maintain and it was blocking the traffic. The Temple Bar Trust was set up in the 1970's with the intention of returning thegate home. The aim of the trust is the preservation of the nation's architectural heritage.Transporting the gate will mean physically pulling it down, stone by stone, removing and rebuilding it near St Paul's Cathedral. Most of the facade of the gate will probably be replaced, though there is a good chance that the basic structure will be sound. The hardest job of all, however, will be to recreate the statues of the monarchs that once stood on top of the gate.+第十四篇 Family History 家族史In an age when technology is developing faster than ever before, many people are being attracted to the idea of looking back into the past. One way they can do this is by ìinvestigating their own family history. They can try to find out more about where their families came from and what they did, This is now a fast—growing hobby, especially in countries with a fairly short history, like Australia and the United States. It is one thing to spend some time going through a book on family history and to take the decision to investigate your own family's past. It is quite another to carry out the research work successfully. It is easy to set about it in a disorganized way and cause yourself many problems which could have been avoided with a little forward planning. If your own family stories tell you that you are connected with a famous character , whether hero or criminal , do not let this idea take over your research. Just treat it as an interesting possibility. A simple system for collecting and storing your information will be adequate to start with; a more complex one may only get in your way. The most important thing, though, is to get started. Who knows what you might find? +第十五篇Helen and Martin 海伦和马丁With a thoughtful sigh, Helen turned away from the window and wa1ked back to her favourite armchair. Would her brother never arrive? For a brief moment, she wondered if she really cared that much.Over the years Helen had given up waiting for Martin to take an interest in her.Her feelings for him had gradually weakened until now, as she sat waiting for him, she experienced no more than a sister's curiosity to see what had become of her brother.Almost without warning, Martin had lost, his job with a busy publishing company after spending the last eight years in New York as a key figure in the US office. Somehow the two of them hadn't bothered to keep in touch and, left alone, Helen had slowly found her confidence in her own judgment growing. Ignoring the wishes of her parents, she had left university halfway through her course and now, to the astonishment of the whole family, she was gaining a fast-growing reputation in the pages of respected art magazines and was actually earning enough to live on from her paintings.Of course, she took no pleasure in Martin's sudden misfortune, but she couldn't help looking forward to her brother's arrival with quiet satisfaction at what she had achieved.注:第13篇为2012年真题,第14篇为2013年真题,故2014年的斧复习重点为第11、12、15篇。

They feel discouraged when the audience is unable to understand their presentations. That happens a lot especially when technical experts are invited to make a product presentation to a group of users. What can we do to make a business presentation easier to understand In my view, good presentations have always been simple and visual. In an effective business presentation, the fewer the points, the better the messagegets passed on. You focus on the depth of coverage instead of the width (广度)of coverage. Additionally, you make your ideas visual and relevant, so the messageis understood better and rememberedlonger. Great business presenters relate their ideas and concepts to their audience by using simple, powerful diagrams instead of relying on text-based slides. In fact, drawing diagrams forces a presenter to make the idea clear even at the preparation stage. It is impossible to draw a diagram when you are not clear about an idea. Whenyour idea is clear, it is easier to transfer it. Most audiences understand a diagram faster and remember it longer. This possibly explains why most of the memorable presentations have been visual in nature.36.Many speakers believe that the stronger their idea, .A)the more powerful their speech will beB)the more meaningful their speech will beC)the more easily the audience will understand itD)the harder the audience will find it to follow37.Why are you advised to give fewer points in your presentationA)To pass on the messages better.C) To allow audienceto take notes.B)To avoid wasting too much time.D) To leave more time forquestions.38.The speaker can help the audience remember the message longer byA). displaying text-based slides.C) focusing on thewidth of of coverageB)avoiding long technical terms.D)using simple andpowerful diagrams39.The underlined word "transfer" in this passage most probably means 〞A) createB) pass onC) take offD)describe40.This passage is mainly aboutA)how to make an effective business presentationB)how to present strong ideas in a presentationC)how to focus on the depth of coverageD)how to prepare a powerful diagramTask 2Directions:This task is the same as Task 1. A Dog's DilemmaFinding a babysitter while you go out to work is,for example,an inconvenience. For the African wild dog,one of the continent's most endangered carnivores,it's a matter of life and death.New research shows that once packs fall below a certain size, there are not enough animals to both hunt food and stay at home protecting the young. The African wild dog has declined drastically over the past century. Habitual loss, persecution and unexplained outbreaks of disease have all been blamed.Only3,000to5,000animals remain, and the species is expected to go extinct within decades if the trend continues.Other large carnivores such as the spotted hyena face similar pressures, yet are not declining. Now Franck Courchamp of Cambridge University has found a reason why.The dog's weakness lies in its social organisation.Within each pack of up to20adults and pups, only the dominant male and female breed. The remaining animals help raise the pups, cooperating to hunt prey and defend the kill from other carnivores.Because pups can't keep up on a hunt, large packs leave an adult behind to protect them from predators, which include lions and hyenas. But leaving a babysitter also carries costs.A smaller hunting party is less able to tackle large prey and to defend the kill. There is also one less stomach in which to carry food hack to the den,and one more mouth to feed when they get there.Courchamp investigated this awkward trade-off by modelling how the costs of a babysitter change with decreasing pack size. This showed that packs of more than five adults should be able to feed all the pups and still spare a babysitter. But with smaller packs, either the hunting or the babysitting suffers,or the animals have to compensate by increasing the number of hunting excursions-which itself carries a cost to the pack.Field observations in Zimbabwe supported the model.Packs of five animals or fewer left pups unguarded more frequently than larger packsdid. There was also evidence that when they did leave a babysitter, they were forced to hunt more often.A pack which drops below a critical size becomes caught in a vicious circle, says Courchamp, who is now at Paris-Sud University."Poor reproduction and low survival further reduces pack size, culminating in failure of the whole pack."And deaths caused by human activity, says Courchamp, may be what reduces pack numbers to below the sustainable threshold.Mammal ecologist Chris Carbone at London's Institute of Zoology agrees.Maintaining the integrity of wild dog packs will be vital in pre serving the species,he says.16.The African wild dog has been endangered.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.The spotted hyena is on the verge of extinction.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18.The remaining lions will die out within decades.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19.The dominant female is always left behind to protect the young.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20.There is a tension between babysitting and hunting.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21.The size of a pack must be big enough for it to survive.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22.Steps will be taken to protect the African wild dog.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned参考答案:16.A17.B18.C19.B20.A21.A22.C第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)阅读下面这篇短文,短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第2~5段每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中选择4个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。
