AIn the fall of 1985, I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year afterI started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic—and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed Son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.You can imagine how busy I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it look s huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.26.When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ______.A. a writerB. a teacherC. a judgeD. a doctor27.The author quit school in her second year of college because she______.A. wanted to study by herselfB. fell in love and got marriedC. suffered from a serious illnessD. decided to look after her grandma28.What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?A. She was busy yet happy with her family life.B. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.D. She was too confused to make a correct choice.29.What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Failure is the mother of success.B. Little by little, one goes far.C. Every coin has two sides.D. Well begun is half done.30.Which of the following can best describe the author ?A. Caring and determined.B. Honest and responsible.C. Ambitious and sensitive.D. Innocent andsingle-minded.【参考答案】26-30 CDABA阅读理解链接2(2012江苏卷)Franz Kafka wrote that "a book must be the ax (斧子) for the frozen sea inside us. " I once shared this sentence with a class of seventh graders, and it didn't seem to require any explanation. We’d just finished John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. When we read the end together out loud in class, my toughest boy, a star basketball player, wept a little, and so did I. "Are you crying?" one girl asked, as she got out of her chair to take a closer look. "I am,"I told her, "and the funny thing is I've read it many times. "But they understood. When George shoots Lennie, the tragedy is that we realize it was always going to happen. In my 14 years of teaching in a New York City public middle school, I've taught kids with imprisoned parents, abusive parents, irresponsible parents; kids who are parentsAlong with Of Mice and Men, my groups read: Sounder, The Red Pony, Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The students didn't always read from the expected point of view. About The Red Pony, one student said, "it’s about being a man, it’s about manline ss. " I had never before seen the parallels between Scarface and Macbeth, nor had I heard Lady Macbeth's soliloquies (独白)read as raps (说唱) , but both made sense; the interpretations were playful, but serious. Once introduced to Steinbeck's writing, one boy went on to read The Grapes of Wrath and toldme repeatedly how amazing it was that "all these people hate each other, and they're all white. " His historical view was broadening, his sense of his own country deepening. Year after year former students visited and told me how prepared they had felt in their first year in college as a result of the classes.Year after year, however, we are increasing the number of practice tests. We are trying to teach students to read increasingly complex texts, not for emotional punch (碰撞) but for text complexity. Yet, we cannot enrich (充实) the minds of our students by testing them on texts that ignore their hearts. We are teaching them that words do no. amaze but confuse. We mav succeed in raising test scores, but we will fail to teach that reading can be transformative and that it belongs to them.66. The underlined words in Paragraph 1 probably mean that a book helps to_______A. realize our dreamsB. give support to our life 'C. smooth away difficultiesD. awake our emolions67. Why were the students able to understand the novel Of Mice and Men?A. Because they spent much time reading it.B. Because they had read the novel beforeC. Because they came from a public school. ,D. Because they had similar life experiences.68.The girl left the selective high school possibly because_______.A. she was a literary-minded girl B. her parents were immigrantsC. she couldn't fit in with her classD. her father was then in prison69.To the author's surprise, the students read the novels ________.A. creativelyB. passivelyC. repeatedlyD. carelessly70.The author writes the passage mainly to________.A. introduce classic works of literatureB. advocate teaching literature to touch the heartC. argue for equality among high school studentsD. defend the current testing system【试题解析】细节理解题。

In my experience, freshmen today are different from those I knew when I started as a professor 25 years ago. College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college. Many of today’s students lack resilience (适应力)and at the first sign of difficulty are unable to think out strategies. The hardship can be a failing grade on a test, a cut from the team, or a romantic breakup. It is really too easy to poin t the finger at parents who protect their children from life’s obstacles. Parents, who handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children from writing admission essays to picking college courses, certainly may contribute to their chi ldren’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to the social trends of today. How many people do you know who are on medications (治疗) to prevent anxiety or depression? The number of students who arrive at college already medicated for unwanted emotions has increased dramatically in the past 10 years. We, as a society, don’t want to“feel” anything unpleasant and we certainly don’t want our children to“suffer”. The resulting problem is that by not experiencing negative emotions, one does not learn the necessary skills to tolerate and solve problems. Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political realities, but I don’t believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than the past 10 years. What I do think is that many students are often not prepared to be young “adults”with all the responsibilities of life.As parents, we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them in this direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.1. The best title of the text probably is_____A. Have College Freshmen Changed?B. What Should College Faculty and Staff Do Today?C. What Difficulty Are Freshmen Facing?D. How to Get Used to College Life for Freshmen?2. According to the text, today’s freshmen_____.A. are not good at dealing with problemsB. often fail in the examsC. can’t get along well with classmatesD. have to experience more intense college life3. If freshmen become more mature to face and solve problems, they should______.A. experience negative emotions themselvesB. ask parents, teachers and coaches for more helpC. receive medications to prevent anxiety or depressionD. put their hearts and soul into the study4. The text is mainly written for_____.A. teachersB. parentsC. studentsD. psychologists【参考答案】28.AAAB【北京市东城区2014模拟】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday. Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase (追赶).Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh. At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

Because the report confirmed what scientists have been saying for years: that human activity, particularly in the form of emissions (排放) of greenhouse gases, is responsible for the warming in the past few centuries, and that unless such emissions are greatly reduced, we will in the future bring about our entire ecosystem's destruction. The report concluded that 1.5℃ of global warming over the next couple of hundred years is already “baked__in”. This makes the goals outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement—that nations agreed to keep warming below 2℃, and hopefully below 1.5℃—much harder to meet. Worse still, the IPCC report was followed later in the year by the COP27, described by Prof Dann Mitchell, as “a complete failure, other than some commitment to loss and damage”.And the ray of hope? The IPCC's sixth report was broader in the approach than previous studies—taking an indepth look for the first time at the role played in warming by shortterm greenhouse gases such as methane (甲烷), for instance.“Reducing carbon emissions is always the best approach: stop the probl em at its source,” said Mitchell.“But we also need other approaches to help with this. Methane is important, but it's so shortlived—that's why we haven't been so bothered when compared with CO2.”The IPCC working groups showed potential adaptation paths, and they are the other things we can do in terms of fighting climate change and relieving its worst effects, rather than simply reducing carbon emissions. This would include taking measures such as switching to a more plantbased diet (to reduce methane em issions), controlling population growth, reducing financial inequality and developing means by which we might remove CO2 that's already in our atmosphere, rather than simply preventing it being released.4.Which of the following can best describe the sixth report by the IPCC?A.Seemingly contradictory.B.Wholly promising.C.Particularly hopeless.D.Exceptionally new.5.What does the underlined phrase “baked in” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Out of date. B.To the full.C.Under discussion. D.In progress.6.According to the passage, what can we learn about methane?A.It has been long regarded as a major source of global warming.B.Its role in global warming had been overlooked before the report.C.Its boost to global warming is as much as other greenhouse gases.D.It is considered as a new approach to reducing global warming.7.How many aspects do the adaptation paths involve in the last paragraph?A.2.

阅读理解-----AIt's 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (闹钟) rings in my ears.I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom.I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It's not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother's chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it's okay to just say “no”. I shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I don't want to eat.So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.?What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases selfconfidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It's through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.

(9)】I learned about eating disorders (失调) from a guest speaker. She is a nurse and is also an expert on eating disorders, so she knows how bad they are.I learned that these diseases are known as anorexia(厌食)and bulimia (易饿).Anorexics eat so little that they become dangerously thin. For example, a woman may begin to diet if someone tells her, “You are fat.” So she will feel uneasy about herself. She gets worried about herself, and eats less and less each day. Then she becomes an anorexic. Bulimics eat huge amounts of food, which makes them feel sick. These diseases are bad for the body. It takes sufferers three to five years to recover. Sometimes people can die.Why do some people have eating disorders? Because they think if they become thin, they will become beautiful. Therefore, they develop eating disorders. Another reason is the influence of fashion magazines. There are a lot of magazines in the world. There are a lot of thin models in these magazines. They are very thin and look nice, but this guest speaker asked us, “Do you think this is normal?” Her answer was no. She said that in the real world, people have different body types. Also, she said sometimes pictures are not real because they are often edited to make models look more beautiful, so she felt that she needn’t worry about her body type.I was impressed by her words. She said, “Beauty starts from the inside out.” This means if you feel good about yourself, people will see you as a happy and beautiful person. So I think the most important thing is to have a smile on our face, be positive, and try to enjoy life.31. According to the text, eating disorders happen among _______.A. all ladies who consider themselves too fatB. all the girl students who succeed in losing weightC. those who want to become thin by eating lessD. those who can't control their eating properly32. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ______.A. anorexics are overweightB. bulimics eat a lot of foodC. people never die of eating disordersD. eating disorders take people one year to recover33. The guest speaker thinks that thin models in the mag azines ________.A. are not normalB. have eating disordersC. are healthy and beautifulD. are happier than common girls34. We can learn from the text that the guest speaker ________.A. must be very fatB. might be too thinC. must have a beautiful body shapeD. must have a body type she is satisfied with35. What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs?A. Beauty starts from the inside out.B. Models in the magazines are beautiful.C. Reasons why people want to lose weight.D. The guest spe aker’s opinion on thin models.【参考答案】31-35 DBADA通过参加一个讲座,作者了解到饮食失调已经成为当今健康问题。

The stolen car was found by the police last week.(2)作表语:过去分词作表语时,表示其逻辑主语所处的状态,其逻辑主语就是句中的主语,如:The glass is broken.

The glass was broken by my little brother.

When I opened the door, I found the ground covered by fallen leaves. I had my bike repaired yesterday.

Along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws(爪)on its wings when young .They build their homes about 4.6m above the river ,an important feature(特征)for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin. In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and red on the underside .The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip .Using these four claws ,together with the beak(喙),they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes. ( ) 1. What is the text mainly about?A.Hoatzins in dry and rainy seasons.B.The relatives and enemies of hoatzins.C.Primitive birds and hoatzins of the Amazon.D.The appearance and living habits of hoatzins.( ) 2. Young hoatzins are different from their parents in that .A.they look like young cuckoosB.they have claws on the wingsC.they eat a lot like a cowD.they live on river banks( ) 3. What can we infer about primitive birds from the text?A.They had claws to help them climb.B.They could fly long distances.C.They had four wings like hoatzins.D.They had a head with long feathers on the top.( ) 4. Why do hoatzins collect together in smaller groups when the rainy season comes? A.To find more food.B.To protect themselves better.C.To keep themselves warm.D.To produce their young.A篇1.

2.选B。

根据第一段has claws(爪)on its wings when young,和第三段可知,hoatzin在幼年期是有爪子的,而长大学会飞之后就没有了。

3.选A。

(5)Passage Eleven (Superconducting Materials)The stone age, The Iron Age. Entire epochs have been named for materials. So what to call the decades ahead? The choice will be tough. Welcome to the age of superstuff. Material science -- once the least sexy technology –is bursting with new, practical discoveries led by superconducting ceramics that may revolutionize electronics. But superconductors are just part of the picture: from house and cars to cook pots and artificial teeth, the world will someday be made of different stuff. Exotic plastics, glass and ceramics will shape the future just as surely as have genetic engineering and computer science. The key to the new materials is researchers’ increasing ability to manipulate substances at the molecular level. Ceramics, for example, have long been limited by their brittleness. But by minimizing the microscopic imperfections that cause it,scientists are making far stronger ceramics that still retain such qualities as hardness and heat resistance. Ford Motor Co. now uses ceramic tools to cut steel.A firm called Kyocera has created a line of ceramic scissors and knives that stay sharp for years and never rust or corrode.A similar transformation has overtaken plastics. High-strength polymers now form bridges, ice-skating rinks and helicopter rotors. And one new plastic that generates electricity when vibrated or pushed is used in electric guitars, touch sensors for robot hands and karate jackets that automatically record each punch and chop. Even plastic litter, which once threatened to permanently blot the landscape, has proved amenable to molecular tinkering. Several manufacturers now make biodegradable forms; some plastic six-pack rings for example, gradually decompose when exposed to sunlight. Researchers are developing ways to make plastics as recyclable as metal or glass. Besides, composites –plastic reinforced with fibers of graphite or other compounds – made the round-the-world flight of the voyager possible and have even been proved in co mbat: a helmet saved an infantryman’s life by deflecting two bullets in the Grenada invasion. Some advanced materials are old standard with a new twist. The newest fiberoptic cable that carry telephone calls cross-country are made of glass so transparent that a piece of 100 miles thick is clearer than a standard window pane. But new materials have no impact until they are made into products. And that transition could prove difficult, for switching requires lengthy research and investment. It can be said a firmer handle on how to move to commercialization will determine the success or failure of a country in the near future.1.How many new materials are mentioned in this passage?[A] TwoThree[C] Four[D] Five2.Why does the author mention genetic engineering and computer science?[A] To compare them with the new materials. To show the significance of the new materials on the future world.[C] To compare the new materials to them.[D] To explain his view point.3.Why is transition difficult?[A] Because transition requires money and time.Because many manufacturers are unwilling to change their equipment.[C] Because research on new materials is very difficult.[D]Because it takes 10 years.4.Where lies success of a country in the New Age of superstuff?[A] It lies in research. It lies in investment.[C] It lies in innovation.[D] It lies in application.Vocabulary1.superstuff 超级材料2.superconducting ceramic 超导陶瓷3.exotic 神奇的4.shape 塑造,成型5.brittleness 脆性6.polymer 聚合体7.karate jacket 空手道外衣8.touch sensor 触及传感器9.each punch and chop 每一个击、打10.blot 玷污,损害风景的东西11.tinker 修补,调整12.amendable 服从于,遵循的13.biodegradable 能生物递减分解的14.six-pack rings 放六个罐子的环状物15.decompose 分解16.recyclable 可循环(使用的)17.infantryman 步兵18.deflect 使偏斜,使转向19.a new twist 一个新的观点,方法难句译注1.Material science –once the least sexy technology –is bursting with new, practical discoveries led by superconducting ceramics that may revolutionize electronics.
