当时正值美国国内黑人与白人矛盾冲突激化之际，电影虽然说的是经济大萧条时的事情，其实正是影射当时国内的现状。

1962年，好莱坞赞赏的目光投向风流小生格利高里·派克。

根据哈柏
李（Harper Lee）畅销小说改编，在《杀死一只知更鸟》里，一向以英俊潇洒出现在银幕上的派克突然戴起了一幅宽边眼镜，格外庄重与老派起来。

原来，他是在扮演一位不顾个人安危，为黑人伸张正义的律师——艾蒂科斯·芬奇。

芬奇在南方梅岗城任职，为人正直沉稳，常常不计报酬地为穷人们伸张正义。

他对年幼丧母的女儿斯科特与儿子詹姆即严格又慈爱。

有一次谈起打鸟时，他对孩子说，不要去杀死知更鸟，因为它们只为人类歌唱，从来不做危害人类的事情。

在当地，歧视黑人的现象十分严重。

一天，芬奇去法院为黑人汤姆一案当辩护律师。

白人检查官指控汤姆犯有强奸罪，芬奇经过认真调查，发现事实并非如此。

于是，在法庭上，他实事求是地进行辩护，把对汤姆的指控一一加以驳斥，最后他要求判汤姆无罪，并且义正辞严地呼吁人们要尊重事实，要维护人类的尊严与平等。

可是陪审团由于都是白人在通过激烈的争论后仍判汤姆有罪。

而且，事情并没有就此结束，持种族偏见的一些白人进而对芬奇一家进行挑衅和恫吓，詹姆与斯科特在参加万圣节庆祝活动时被一伙歹徒袭击，詹姆的胳膊被扭断。

面对强暴，芬奇毫不畏缩，他准备继续为汤姆申诉。

在主线之外，还有很多人改变了自己原来对社会地位，种族之间的差异的歧视，意识到了自己不曾意识到的人性的善。

Why do you think this story of To Kill a Mockingbird was told from the point of view of a child?
To Kill a Mockingbird is the novel of Harper Lee about Scout, Jem and their father, Atticus Finch who is an attorney in a small southern town. It is both a coming of age story about the children as well as a hard-hitting drama, as Atticus defends a black man who is on trial for the rape of a white woman. This article written with child’s point of view is more objective in the eyes of the readers. Jean Louise Scout Finch who is protagonist's daughter，as the narrative person, controls the whole development of the novel. As a child, she can easy to recall the readers’ sympathy, so that the readers can understand the world from the child’s perspective. Then the readers can stand in the position of her observation to observe Atticus Finch, Jeremy Atticus Finch, Arthur “Boo” Radley, Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell and so on. Undoubtedly, its effect is more reliable than describing of the narrator. For example, “Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment.” In the eyes of the childre n, the definition of the good father is simple. But “Calpurnia was something else. She was all angles and bones”; “I had felt her tyrannical presence as long as I could remember”. And this character is showed by the children, which is impressed in the minds of the readers. In addition, the images of many characters are showed by watching of the children and gossiping of adults just like the impression of Arthur “Boo” Radley. So the perspective of the children is objective, the readers must judge many figures through experiences and the whole article. As children, they must struggle to understand the adults’ world of prejudice and indifference, to understand the dangers and helplessness under the truth, and try to understand that the bad guys may be have innocent of hearts. In the novel, Mayella Violet Ewell has her trouble that she can’t mention. Everyone in the town has their positions. No one can affirmatively claim that who is bad and who is good. Through the child's perspective to show the racial conflicts in society is a major feature in the novel. It makes the novel simple but profound and thought-provoking. In the eyes of the children, good is good, and evil is evil. Then the world in the children’s eyes is represented objectively avoiding evaluating subjectively. What they see is more real, so the racial discrimination at that time is cruel. What’s more, the world is the eyes of the children in the novel. In the process that the children walk to the known world from the unknown world, their perspectives are gradually changing. And this changing promotes the development of the story. Then the perspective conversion promotes the development of the story. Scout tells us this is the reality from her perspective. The perspective that reveals the racial discrimination through the children eyes is special. The world of the children is pure and kind, so the contrast of the social evils and purity is obvious.。
