高考英语一轮总复习Unit6TheMedia北师大版选择性

UNIT6 THEMEDIAⅠ.阅读理解AThe most popular martial arts today originated in Asia, especially in China. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others.Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a petitive sport, but they are still very useful for selfdefense.Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent’s force.Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent’s for ce to defend yourself.Soft styles use flowing movements and timing to avoid their opponent’s attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu,teach you to defend yourself using force.Techniques involve blocking, posturing and powerful hitting and kicking.Hard martial arts techniques are more effective if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that its roots are derived from Fujian Province? In the 4th century,a munity of Chinese migrants from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities—one of which was kung fu.This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours. In fact,Chinese influence in martial arts was not limited to kung fu.The veryfirst Korean military training guidebook was based on a Chinese version.During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of troops. They adopted a training methodology from a Chinese military book called JiXiaoXinShu,written by the famous Chinese general,Qi Jiguang.1.Why did people invent martial arts?A.For keeping fit.B.For selfdefence.C.For petition.D.For attacking others.2.Which is the character of soft martial arts?ing violence to attack others.B.Attacking your oppone nt’s weakness.ing smooth action to defend yourself from damage.D.Defending yourself with powerful hitting and kicking.3.Who spread Karate?A.Chinese army.B.Korean military.C.Japanese troops.D.Chinese migrants.4.Why did Korean army adopt a training methodology from JiXiaoXinShu?A.To train soldiers.B.To keep soldiers fit.C.To attend cultural activities.D.To show admiration for Qi Jiguang.BWhen learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditionalmethods:reading, writing, listening and repeating. But Brian Mathias’ research team found out that if you gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later. As Mathias describes, they had 22 Germanspeaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the subjects performed the gesture themselves.Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German. Those who performed better on the task showed a higher level of activity in their motor cortex—the part of the brain that is responsible for our body movements. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. The effect did not occur when the subjects were only presented with matching pictures instead of gestures.Another research group led by Leipzig had young adults and eightyearold children listen to new vocabulary for five days, paired with matching pictures or videos of gestures. After two months, the two methods were still tied. But after six months, the adults benefited more from the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by both. But it is not only the motor ponent itself that promotes learning. The meaning conveyed by the gesture also figures in.“I think we underuse gestures in our classrooms,” GoldinMeadow says.“Good teachers and good listeners use it,but not always in a systematic way.Others don’t necessarily bring it into the class—and it could be used more often and more effectively.”5.What is the finding of Brian Mathias’ research?A.Translation helps vocabulary building.B.Motor cortex interprets body language.C.Gestures facilitate vocabulary learning.D.Memory improves with regular practice.6.What does Leipzig’s research tell us about language learning?A.Adults and children are equally efficient learners.B.Pictures have little influence on language learning.C.Pictures are found more helpful than videos for children.D.Benefits of gestures are more evident in adults in the long run.7.What do
