AMy students often tell me that they do not have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My reply is often a brief “You have as much time as the president.” I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.Once in graduate school, I tried to justify (证明......有理) myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That's irrelevant(和……不相关的). What's important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have had time to reflect on the “hard worker” dodge (妙计),and I have come to some conclusions, all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.If you look at the matter analytically, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”,which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the issue of “work” during that time, which can vary in intensity. But, as my professor suggested, it's not the diligence(勤奋) of the work but the quality of the product that's important. That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone's office: “Don't work harder. Work smarter.” There's a lot of sense in that idea.If you can't get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means devising(想出) ways of getting more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”,the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off across the board in all your studies.21.From the passage, we know that the author is most probably ______.A.a poet B.an educatorC.a novelist D.an engineer22.We can infer from the second paragraph that students still ______.A.have enough timeB.can meet the presidentC.can get something done wellD.should accept the teacher's suggestion23.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.Not an Acceptable ExplanationB.Don't Work Harder. Work SmarterC.An Analysis of Our Work HabitsD.Read Better And Write BetterBMake A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service in the USA, which takes place on the fourth Saturday of October.Who takes part in Make A Difference Day?Anyone! Young and old, individuals and groups, anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. It might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. USA WEEKEND covers volunteers and their projects in articles and photos. How do I get started?Look around your community. Are people hungry, homeless or ill? Are parks or schools dirty or neglected? Y ou can act alone or enlist your friends, family and co-workers.You can also call the Make A Difference Day Hot Line, 1-800-416-3824, for information. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing(压抑的)tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!Communicating with negative(消极的;负面的)people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect. When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首) of a negative person is put in you, you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down.Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker, or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to(附着) you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.28.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.A.make a comparison B.offer an evidenceC.introduce a topic D.describe a daily scene29.How can negative people have effect on us?A.By influencing our emotion.B.By telling us the nature of life.C.By changing our ways of thinking.D.By comparing their attitudes to life with others.30.Some negative people base their happiness on ______.A.other people's pity for themB.making other people unhappyC.building up a positive attitudeD.other people's respect for them31. According to the passage, to reduce negative people's influence on us, we areadvised to ______.A.change negative people's attitudes to lifeB.show our dissatisfaction to negative peopleC.make negative people feel ashamed of themselvesD.communicate with negative people as little as possibleDIn choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience (经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense ofhumor (幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!32. Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing a friend?A. understanding.B. honesty.C. reliability.D. a sense of humor.33. If you have fair weather friends, ______ .A. they will give you all that they have when you need helpB. you will be refused when you get into troubleC. you will become richD. you can be sure that you get real friends34. Good friends need to ______.A. always point out each other's mistakesB. be helped with moneyC. understand each other's feelingsD. have money or luck35. This passage mainly discuss ______ .A. the qualities of a friendB. where to choose friendsC. how to get along with friendsD. the importance of having a friend第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

第I卷(选择题,共70分)第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)(略)第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AWhoever has made a voyage up the Hudson River must remember the Catskill Mountains. They are a branch of the great Appalachian family, and can be seen to the west rising up to a noble height and towering over the surrounding country. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their beautiful shapes on the clear evening sky, but sometimes when it is cloudless, gray steam gathers around the top of the mountains which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will shine and light up like a crown of glory (华丽的皇冠).At the foot of these mountains, a traveler may see light smoke going up from a village. In that village, and in one of the houses (which, to tell the exact truth, was sadly time-worn and weather-beaten), there lived many years ago, a simple, good-natured fellow by the name of Rip Van Winkle.Rip's great weakness was a natural dislike of all kinds of money-making labor. It could not be from lack of diligence (勤劳), for he could sit all day on a wet rock and fish without saying a word, even though he was not encouraged by a single bite. He would carry a gun on his shoulder for hours, walking through woods and fields to shoot a few birds or squirrels. He would never refuse to help a neighbor, even in the roughest work. The women of the village, too, used to employ him to do such little jobs as their less helpful husbands would not do for them. In a word, Rip was ready to attend to everybody's business but his own.If left to himself, he would have whistled ( 吹口哨) life away in perfect satisfaction; but his wife was always mad at him for his idleness (懒散). Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was endlessly going, so that he was forced to escape to the outside of the house -- the only side which, in truth, belongs to a henpecked husband.21. Which of the following best describes the Catskill Mountains?A. They are on the west of the Hudson River.B. They are very high and beautiful in this area.C. They can be seen from the Appalachian family.D. They gather beautiful clouds in blue and purple.22. The hero of the story is probably_____________.A. hard-working and likes all kinds of workB. idle and hates all kinds of jobsC. simple, idle but very dutifulD. gentle, helpful but a little idle23. The underlined words "henpecked husband" in the last paragraph probably means a manwho______.A. likes huntingB. is afraid of hensC. loves his wifeD. is afraid of his wife24. What would be the best title for the text?A. Catskill Mountains.B. A Mountain Village.C. Rip Van Winkle.D. A Dutiful Husband.BThe Museum: The Charles Dickens Museum in London is the world's most important collection of material relating to the great Victorian novelist and social commentator (时事评论员).The only surviving London homeof Dickens ( from 1837 until 1839) was opened as a museum in 1925 and is still welcoming visitors from all over the world. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services. The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated (低估) the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times."Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance — for both leafing and flowering — that results from temperature increases." the study said. The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis (光合作用) to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.Scientists believe the world's average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃every ten years since 1979.So far, efforts to cut emissions (排放) of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃this century — a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.28. What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1?A. Plants' reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystem.B. The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists' expectation.C. Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.D. Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.29. We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that ________.A. plants' flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafingB. there are 1,634 plant species on the four continentsC. scientists should improve the design of the experimentsD. the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change30. Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because ________.A. they can prove the climate change clearlyB. they are very important in the food chainsC. they play a leading role in reducing global warmingD. they are growing and flowering much faster than before31. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world's temperature?A. It has risen nearly 0.2℃since 1979.B. Its change will lead to weather extremes.C. It is 0.8℃higher in 1979 than that of 1990.D. It needs to be controlled within 2℃in this century.DA person who compares the annual earnings of college and high school graduates would nodoubt conclude that higher education is a good investment—the present value of the college earnings premium (奖金) (the better part of $1 million) seemingly far outdistances (超过) college costs. But for many, attending college is unequivocally (明确地) not the right decision on purely economic reasons.First of all, college graduates on average are smarter and have better work habits than high school graduates. Those who graduated from college were better students in high school, for example. Thus, at least a portion of the earnings premium associated with college has nothing to do with college itself, but rather with other traits (特性).Second, not everyone is average. A non-swimmer trying to cross a stream that on average is three feet deep might drown because part of the stream is seven feet in depth. The same kind of thing sometimes happens to college graduates too entranced (着迷的) by statistics on averages.Earnings vary considerably between the graduates of different schools, and within schools, earnings differ a great deal between majors. Majors of accounting, computer science, and engineering majors, for example, almost always make more than those majoring in education, social work, or ethnic studies.Third, the number of new college graduates far exceeds (超过) the growth in the number oftechnical, managerial, and professional jobs where graduates traditionally have gravitated (趋向). As a consequence, we have a new phenomenon: underemployed college graduates doing jobs historically performed by those with much less education.Does this mean no one should go to college? Of course not. First of all, college is more than training for a career, and many might benefit from the social aspects of advanced schooling. As a general rule, I would say graduates in the top quarter of their class at a high-quality high school should go on to a four-year degree program, while those in the bottom quarter of their class at a high school with a mediocre educational reputation should not. Those in between should consider perhaps doing a two-year program and then transferring to a four-year school. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule, but it is important for us to keep in mind that college is not for everyone.32. If you only compare the earnings of college and high school graduates, you will conclude that ______.A. some students shouldn't go to collegeB. college education seems to bring a high rate of returnC. attending college is not the right decision for the poorD. college education seems to be not so successful33. From the second paragraph, we know that ______.A. college education is a must for young peopleB. the number of college graduates has been decreasingC. college graduates may get higher earnings because of many good traitsD. it is certain that college students can get higher earnings34. The writer mentions a non-swimmer crossing the stream to show ______.A. not all of the college graduates can get good earningsB. some of the college students can get well paidC. most of the college students can't get a good salaryD. students in some majors are difficult to find jobs35. Which of the following is true according to the writer?A. Society needs more high-quality college graduates.B. Most of the college graduates can find suitable jobs.C. Not all the students have to receive college education.D. We should reconsider the value of school education.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Everyone knows there are many English expressions about clothes. If I keep talking, soon enough you will start to think I am an old hat about this -- a real expert. Do not be fooled, though. My friends sometimes call me a wolf in she ep’s clothing. 36I’m not really a bad person. But I do love clothes. It is always fun to get dressed up. I look great in my best clothes. 37 In fact, my husband says I look dressed to kill. Of course, I wouldnever kill anyone. But, there is something special about putting on clothes that are pleasing to the eye.My favorite clothes are not modern or fashionable. 38 But I really do not care. Some of the clothes I like best are hand-me-downs. My older sister gave them to me when she no longer wanted them. Hand-me-downs are great because clothes often cost too much money. I live on a shoestring. I have a very small budget and little money to spend on clothes. 39 Maybe someday the shoe will be on the other foot. The opposite will be true. I will have a lot of money to buy clothes and my sister will get hand-me-downs from me.I admit I dream of being rich. I dream that someday I will be able to live like a rich person. 40 Some of my friends got rich by riding someone else’s coat tail s. They are successful today as a result of someone else being successful. But, I believe you should never criticize others for something you would do yourself. What is said about someone else can also be said about you. Remember, if the shoe fits, wear it.A. I will know what it is like to live a rich life.B. Maybe someday they will come into fashion.C. They certainly look worse on me than a birthday suit.D. However, my sister has a lot of money to spend on clothes.E. To be honest, I did not say anything without knowing the facts.F. This is someone who acts like a good person, but is really a bad person.G. You might say when I wear my favorite clothes, I am dressed to the teeth.第三部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)One day on the way to school, a little boy found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly and watched it almost every day. AI made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love i s an act of will.A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach.I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kid s all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relax ed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love. There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.“What’s the matter?” I asked her.“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “ I don’t?”“What do you mean?”“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you somet hing about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing.“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”21. A team led by the University of Exeter Medical School analyzed data from the Millennium Cohort Study, a database of more than 19,500 UK children born between 2000 and 2002.Findings showed that more children with ADHD came from families below the poverty line than the UK population as a whole. The study found the chances of parents in rented housing having a child with ADHD were roughly three times larger than for those who owned their ownhomes. The team also found that the chances of younger mothers having a child with ADHD were higher than for other mothers. Mothers with no degrees were more than twice as likely to have a child with ADHD than those with degrees, and lone parents were likely to have a child with ADHD than families with two live-in parents. Information was gathered from surveys when the children were nine months old, and at the ages of three, five, seven and eleven.Dr Ginny of the University of Exeter Medical School, who led the study, said: “There is a genetic element to ADHD, but this study provides strong evidence that ADHD is also associated with a disadvantaged social and economic background. Some people believe that ADHD in children causes disadvantage to the economic situation of their family, but we found no evidence to support that theory. It’s important to discover more about the causes of this disorder so that we can look towards prevention, and so that we can target treatment and support effectively.”DWe are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect — but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them--- a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for the job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school’s reputation, unable to compete with the child from the favored school. The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil forcebecause they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.32. The underlined word “favoritism” in paragraph three is used to describe the phenomenon that_______.A. bright children also need certificate to get satisfying jobs.B. children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs.C. poor children with certificates are favored in job markets.D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success.33. What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author?A. Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.B. There would be more opportunities and excellence.C. Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.D. Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.34. The opponents of the examination system will agree that _______.A. jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection.B. computers should be selected to take over many jobs.C. special classes are necessary to keep the school standards.D. schools that win academic subjects should be done away with.35. The passage mainly focuses on __________.A. schools and certificates.B. examination and equality.C. opportunity and employment.D. standards and reputation.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
