But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan(贷款) we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month. And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a rail way station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family. But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.) My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.Eight months later, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising ca r costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: DoI really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dare to ask the question.1. The author decided to live a car-free life partly because .A.most families chose to go car-freeB.he was hurt in a terrible car accidentC.the cost of a new car was too muchD.the traffic jam was unbearable for him2.What is the attitude of the author’s family towards his plan?A.Supportive.B.Disapproving.C.Optimistic.D.Unconcerned.3. What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?A.Life cannot go without a car.B.Life without a car is a little bit hard.C.His life gets improved without a car.D.A car-free life does not suit everyone.BRapid advances in a new technology will soon transform science fiction into reality—meaning people will have driverless cars, small robots at their command and the ability to experience being in another place without leaving home, predicted Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the planet’s largest cellphone trade show.Introduction of books available online, Internet translation of languages and voice recognition for computers all happened much faster than anyone could foresee and that technological research into even more previously unheard of advances is progressing at a fast speed.“People who predict that holograms(全息图) and self-driving cars will become reality soon are absolutely right,” Schmidt told thousands of attendees. Research underway will lead to situations where people can put themselves at events like a rock concert so that they can see, hear and even feel the event. And turn down the volume, if it’s too loud. One attendee said she was scared that the possibility could be dehumanizing, but Schmidt replied by holding up his cellphone into the air. “It has an off button and it is here on the right,” Schmidt said. “My point is that it is all about your control. If you don’t like my version of a rock concert, I’m not forcing you to go. In the future, small robots could be used, so busy people can send them to events for video and voice transmissions when their presence isn’t required,” Schmidt said.Technology in the near future will redefine the relationsh ip among people in the world. “Smarter resourceful citizens are going to demand a better deal for their new life,” Schmidt said.4. Why did Schmidt give the example in Paragraph 4?A.To list advantages of the new cell phone.B.To advise a wider use of the new cell phone.C.To remove people’s worry of the new technology.D.To compare the benefits of using the new technology.5. From the passage, the new technology .rgely depends on science fictionB.will eventually replace humans’ presenceC.amazin gly improves people’s social skillsD.can unexpectedly bring new various choices6. What’s the writer’s attitude towards rapid advances in technology?A.Objective.B.Negative.C.Uncared.D.doubtful.CWhat will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example.Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head; in particular, the forehead will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use.In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all these give the impression that in the future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at!This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.7.The passage mainly tells us that .A.man’s life will be different in the futureB.future man will look quite different from usC.man is growing taller and uglier as time passesD.man’s organs’ functions will be on the wane8.The change in man’s size of forehead is probably because .A.he/she makes use only 20% of the brain’s cap acityB.his/her brain has grown larger over the past centuriesC.the other 80% of his/her brain will grow in due timeD.he/she will use his/her brain more and more as time goes on9.Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?A.He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.B.He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.C.His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.D.He thinks and feels in different ways.10.It is implied that .A.human beings will become less attractive in the futureB.less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degenerationC.human beings hope for a change in the future lifeD.future life is always predictableⅣ读后续写阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

2019-2020年高中英语 Unit3 Life in the Future教案 新人教版必修5

2019-2020年高中英语 Unit3 Life in the Future教案新人教版必修5Ⅲ.

How about having it brought to you by a robot? Thanks to Domino"s Robotic Unit or DRU, that just became a reality! On March 8, the three-foot tall robot delivered its first pizza to some lucky residents in Brisbane, Australia. The fully autonomous DRU is the result of cooperation between Domino"s Pizza Australia and Marathon Robotics. The 450-pound machine that travels at a maximum speed of 12. 4 miles an hour can traverse a distance of up to 12 miles and back, before requiring to recharge the battery. LIDAR, a laser-based sensor technology similar to the one used in self-driving cars, enables DRU to detect and avoid obstacles, while traditional sensors, much like those used in vacuum robots ensure its path is safe as it heads to its destination. The robot can fit up to ten pizzas and even has a separate cold area to accommodate drink orders. To access their food, customers have to enter the unique code provided for them by the company. This not only ensures that they pick up the right pizza, but also prevents the pies from getting stolen.Scientists expect additional DRU"s to be ready for service in their various Queensland locations within the next six months. But don"t expect these super cute robots to replace humans anytime soon. According to Domino"s the DRU still needs extensive testing, which the company believes could take up to two years. And then there is also the issue of regulations. The public use of autonomous vehicles is still banned in most countries. But Don Meij, the CEO and Managing Director of Domino"s Pizza Australia New Zealand Ltd, is not worried. 选择题部分Ⅰ.阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)APeople have been enjoying the benefits of cycling(骑自行车) in Amsterdam(阿姆斯特丹) for years. It is a good city for cycling because it is flat and there are plenty of places for bicycle parking. Today some people call Amsterdam “City of Bicycles” because of the convenience for bicycles there. In the 1960s, a group of cycling fans had an idea. They believed that it would be better for everybody if cars weren’t allowed in the city centre and only bicycles were. They were hopeful that this would help to save energy, reduce pollution and provide free public transport. The group painted hundreds of bicycles white and placed them in lots of neighbourhoods around Amsterdam for people to use. Then a problem came—thieves took all the bicycles within weeks! However, more than thirty years later, the “white bike” is back in town—this time with a computer chip(芯片) to record its every move! To take a bicycle, you have to insert(插入) a special card. The new “white bike” is not actually white but is an unusual design with bright colours. The bikes are parked at special parking places and people who want to use them have to take them to another special parking place that has enough room. There is already less traffic in central Amsterdam, because both locals and tourists have been using the white bikes. Instead, thanks to the good ideas of lots of people, like the cycling fans in the 1960s, many people around the world have been enjoying city centre streets without cars many years.1.Amsterdam is called “City of Bicycles” because of .A.the cycling fans thereB.the appearance for bicyclesC.the convenience of bicyclesD.the quality of bicycles2.In the 1960s, some cycling fans hoped bikes could .A.be specially designedB.help to save energyC.be placed anywhereD.be painted in different colours3.Why did the first “white bike” plan fail?A.There were not enough parking places.B.The government allowed people to drive cars freely.C.Thieves took all the bikes within weeks.D.People were tired of riding bikes.4.What do people use if they want to take a “white bike” in the city?A.A special computer.B.A common chip.C.A special card.D.A white key.BWhen a child is told he is “uncool”, it can be very painful. He may say he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose(故意地). But these are simple ways to deal with sadness by pretending it’s not there.Helping a child feel better in school has to be careful. If you say, “Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn’t matter!” Children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, “I’m going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school.”If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc. There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider “super”.When you pla n trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends. What you can do is give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.5.A child who has been informed of being “uncool” may .A.care nothing about itB.do something uncool on purposeC.develop a sense of angerD.pretend to get hurt very much6.A teacher can help an unpopular child by .A.seeing t he child as the teacher’s favouriteB.asking the child to do something for partnersC.forcing other children to make friends with the childD.offering the child chances to show his good qualities7.How can parents help their child fit in better?A.By taking him to have picnics in the park.B.By being kind to his schoolmates.C.By forcing him to invite friends home.D.By cooking delicious food for him.CFrom self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 per cent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.“T he next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence. The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states: “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.“The growth of 20- to 40-person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.A 2014 report by Pew Research Centre found 52 per cent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report’s co-author.“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Grudin told researchers.8.According to the report, .A.people won’t necessarily lose jobsB.big companies will face fewer challengesC.small companies will win against big companiesD.most people will become interested in technology9.We can infer from the text that in the future .A.people will face many difficultiesB.people will take up more creative jobsC.artificial intelligence will threaten people’s livesD.most jobs will be done in traditional workplaces10.What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future?A.Mixed.B.Worried.C.Hopeful.D.Doubtful.第二节阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

This project, “Growing Up in Australia,” is following two groups of children from early childhood until they become adults. The project is being supported by the Australian government and involves hundreds of researchers visiting the homes of 10,000 children. Researchers hope to find a relationship between the children"s future behavior and their health, education, and family environments. When the study began, the first group of children was aged 0-1, while the second group was aged 4-5. In order to make sure that children from every kind of environment and background were chosen, the study found volunteers from each area. 考试时间100分钟。

选择题部分Ⅰ.阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

AThe year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the earth. On 17 July, a piece four kilometres wide enters the earth´s atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometre high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometres an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andean Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won´t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won´t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the earth. The dinosaurs were on the earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn´t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?1. What is mainly described in the passage?A.A historic discovery.B.An event of imagination.C.The research on space.D.A scientific adventure.2. Why can´t the northern half of the earth escape for long?A.Because the land is covered with water.B.Because wars break out among countries.C.Because people there cannot live at the temperature of zero.D.Because the light and heat from the sun cannot reach the earth.3. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove.A.the human beings will die out in 2094B.animals could not live in the cold climateC.the earth could be hit by other objects in spaceD.what happened 65 million years ago was an invented storyBThe future is just around the corner, and according to some people who make the future their business, it doesn´t look dissimilar to what you see around you now, but below the surface there will be differences.Your home of the futureOne of the places in your home is the bathroom. It will have a toilet that can test urine(尿) for sugar levels, take your blood pressure and weigh you. All that information can then be uploaded to your doctor. Even the bathroom soap will be upgraded, which will have sunscreen(防晒霜) in it, which will stick to your skin. The future of technologyThe kitchen is often the centre of a home and it has the most potential for future changes. For example, a Web-enabled refrigerator will be able to talk to the manufacturer when a part wears out, so it can order a replacement without you ever knowing something was wrong.Tiny, inexpensive computer chips called RFIDs, or radio frequency identification chips, will be attached to every product in your house. The refrigerator will read the chips, and will even be able to tell you when the milk has gone bad.The counter will be able to make dinner suggestions. Your washing machine will know how to wash your favourite linen(亚麻布) skirt. And you will be able to call your oven from your cellphone to tell it when to start cooking the pot roast.Future travellingFuturists say robots will be a large part of life. Though a driverless car sounds like a crazy idea, it is built to be safer and more efficient than what is currently parked in the driveway.Even with all of the changes coming in the future, the human condition will not change, though. At day´s end, you will still share a drink with a friend and kiss your kids goodnight, for no robots can do that.4.How will the manufacturer know what part of the refrigerator is wrong?A.The host or hostess will tell the manufacturer about it.B.The refrigerator has a function to do that.C.A radio set in the kitchen will perform that.D.The Web-enabled refrigerator will tell the manufacturer automatically.5.Why does the author use “your favourite linen(亚麻布) skirt” as an example?A.To prove the skirt made of linen is easy to wash.B.To show how to wash clothes or bedding made of linen.C.To point out the intelligence of the future washing machine.D.To introduce one of the shortcomings of the washing machine.6.What does the text mainly tell us about?A.How people will travel in the future.B.What our future lifestyle will look like.C.How people will prepare food in the future.D.What changes will happen in our restroom.CPaperless office was first coined in 1975.Four decades later, we´re still chasing(追逐) the paperless office dream. Take the financial(金融的) industry for example—it is one of the slower industries to hug digital transformation. Many financial institutions today still send out trade confirmations by mail. I can tell you from first-hand experience that going paperless is by no means impossible. The Centric Digital office is a paperless work environment where all the office operations go digital, which has amazed our business partners.Actually, companies need to stress the benefits of a digital culture for communication. Going paperless can save time and money. You could say goodbye to costly repairs, office supply orders, wasted employee time and so on. Besides, forbidding paper in the office forces information to be 100%digital, where you can make endless quantities of backups(备份), and easily increase transparency(透明). Not to mention, top talents want to work for digital companies. You might think the secret to a paperless company is purely technology. Well, not really. Thanks to products like iPads, smartphones and cloud services, the ability to go paperless is highly accessible. Yet, even with all this technology, companies continue to rely on paper. It´s not because they don´t have access to the technology, but because they´re lacking the policies, organizational structure and a strong desire to change. In order to go paperless, companies need to change the way they think and operate. The decision needs to be made and carried out and everyone needs to work together to make it.Yes, the paperless office has been a very long time in the making—but it no longer has to be. With numerous quantities of software, services, apps, and technology available today, the only thing we need to do is make the decision to go paperless and see it through.7.The practice of going paperless in the financial industry is.A.encouragingB.disappointingC.satisfyingD.disgusting8.A paperless company can .A.raise the staff salaryB.attract talented staffC.promote product salesD.increase time consumption9.What actually prevents people from going paperless?A.The equipment available.B.Operational research.C.The company policies.D.Technological limitations.10.The writer believes going paperless .A.still needs a long time preparationB.offers people a lot more chancesC.should be made to happen right nowD.brings convenience and trouble as well第二节阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
