That was enough to make him important, but the father loved him especially, because he knew his son was going to bean artist. Pablo knew the word for pencil even before he could see Mamma and Papa. When he was small, he spent hours by himself making delightful little drawings of animals and people. If his mother sent him out to play in the square, he went on drawing in the dust under the trees.Don Jose Ruiz, Pablo’s father, was director of the m useum in southern Spain. He earned only a small salary, but there was not much work to do and he was able to practice his hobby, which was painting pigeons. Don loved pigeons very much. He painted them dead or alive in ones and twos and in dozens. Sometimes he painted them on paper, cut them out and stuck them onto canvas(画布); sometimes he stuck real feathers onto his pictures. He knew a greatdeal about the technique of painting and he taught it all to Pablo.Life in Malaga was very pleasant. In the hot sunshine father and son would walk down to the beach to look at the boats on the shore or wander around the open markets. They made a strange pair. Don was tall and thin, with red hair and beard, sad gray eyes and a fine set of whiskers (腮须). He was so shy and correct that he was nicknamed “the Englishman”. Pablo was quite the opposite. He had his mother’s small, strong build (体格); he had straight black hair, and bright black eyes that noticed everything that was going on around him.36. Father’s Influence (影响) on His Son二Benjamin Franklin was truly what we call a “jack of all trades”. Although best known for his experiments with electricity, Franklin was a scientist, a politician, and almost everything in between.Franklin was born in Boston in 1706, the tenth and youngest of hisfather’s sons. When he was 12, Franklin worked as an apprentice. He worked in his older brother James’ printing shop. He secretly started publishing his writing under the false name of Silence Dogood. James wasn’t pleased when he found out the writer was Ben. Ben stopped his job and set out for Philadelphia. In 1732, Franklin began publishing Poor Richard’s Almanack, where most of his sayings can be found. Many of these , such as “A penny saved is a penny earned”, remain popular today.Franklin is known as a Founding Father. This means that he was part of the group of men who founded their nation. He was a member of the Continental Congress and also the oldest person to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.Electricity and weather were especially interesting to Franklin. He proved that lightning is electricity by catching sparks from a cloud while flying a kite in a storm. As Ben says, “If you would not be forgotten when you are dead and rotten, eithe r write things worth reading or do things worth writing about. ”His theory seems to work, because Ben followed both pieces of his own advice, and we still remember him centuries later!40. Then he points his camera and shoots. The scientist's shiny pictures recently earned him a prize, which is given to top science photographers around the world.Libbrecht takes pictures of snowflakes to learn more about their shapes. The snowflakes form when water steam(水蒸气) in a cloud freezes. Every snowflake grows into a hexagon. That is a six-sided shape. However, no two snowflakes look the same. Experts are not sure why.To find the answer, Libbrecht has traveled to snowy places around the world. He has taken pictures of snowflakes in Canada, Alaska, and Vermont. The work takes patience, Libbrecht explained.“It doesn't snow all the time, and when it does, the snowflakes aren't always good,” he said. Once he's collected enough pictures, he returns to his science lab in California to do research.Since developing his interest in snowflakes, Libbrecht has collected nearly 10,000 snowflake pictures. He will spend most of this winter studying them. The scientist's outdoor work is far from over, though. Libbrecht plans to one day go to other snowy places to take more photos.“I really enjoy watching the snow fall and trying to see what I can find,”he said.“There is a lot of fun.”Kenneth Libbrecht also gave some good advice to kids who want to study snowflakes. “You don't need a lot of things. AOn 26th January, the biggest earthquake in India took the lives of 25,000 people. In the morning, when everybody was enjoying the holiday, the earthquake began. It was about 7.5 on the Ritcher scale.“There is nothing left between the sky and the earth any more.Everything has been pulled down.” said one of the villagers alive.“There is no water,no food and no one has come to help.”Nobody died in Pakistan,a country next to India. The city of Lahore was lucky. In Lahore American School, where I was studying, all of the students were safe. They were on the field,so most children didn’t feel anything. The earthquake was felt by the teachers that were on the second floor. However, though Mrs Young was also on the second floor, she didn’t feel anything. She didn’t know what happened until a teacher told her about it.Those teachers who were on the other floors had different feelings.Mr Emond, the maths teacher from Australia, said that when the earthquake started he thought there was something wrong with him,but then another teacher said that it was an earthquake.Mrs Davis and Mr Frost didn’t feel anything either. My mother didn’t feel anything. She didn’t even know that it was an earthquake till she saw a shaking light. My dad saw the computer shaking and then he looked out of the window and saw many people going out.1.The biggest earthquake in India happened on the________of January 26th.A.night B.afternoonC.noon D.morning2.People use “Riteher scale” to tell________.A.where the earthquake takes placeB.how serious the earthquake isC.when the earthquake takes placeD.how long the earthquake lasts3.We learn that ________ from the sentence “There is nothing left between the sky and the earth anymore.”A.India is a large countryB.the Indian people had nothing after the earthquakeC.there is no tall buildings in IndiaD.the earthquake in India was serious4.The city of Lahore is________.A.in India B.in PakistanC.in America D.in AustraliaBBuildings crashed to the ground in seconds.Thousands of people lost their lives in a flash.Since they were told an earthquake would hit Tokyo around September 16,Japanese people haven’t been able to get these thoughts out of their minds. They heard the news from Yoshio Kushida,a researcher who used radio waves to predict that an earthquake would strike with a magnitude(量级) of at least seven.“It would be terrible not to warn people of a possible disaster in case a quake actually occurs,”he said. His warning had a big effect.Frightened Tokyo people have been stocking up on water, food and candles in preparation for the terrible day.But Kushida hasn’t had much support from the experts. At present, predicting earthquakes is thought to be impossible. No one can tell exactly where or when the next major earthquake will occur. An earthquake begins tens of miles below the earth’s surface:it’s too far away to see.Ancient Chinese and Italian scientists forecast earthquakes by special “earthquake clouds”.They found that a week before an earthquake, there were often strange clouds—shaped like snakes, waves or feathers—in the sky. They thought the clouds might come from a gas produced underground by an earthquake.People also used to watch animals to see if earthquakes were coming. When they saw birds fly away suddenly, dogs barking violently or fish jumping out of the water, they told people to leave the area. Some scientists believed animals had a sharper sense of changes taking place underground. But the ancient methods were not reliable enough.Nowadays, scientists use specialinstruments to predict earthquakes more precisely(精确地).Satellite systems are very useful:they record small changes in the earth’s magnetic fields(磁场) which help show where and when an earthquake may strike.5.Since they were told an earthquake would hit Tokyo,Japanese people________.A.have had no mind to do their workB.have always thought great damage it may causeC.have almost forgotten about itD.have bought all the foods in the markets6.Which of the following is TRUE?A.Tokyo people were surprised at the warning.B.Great disasters would happen if people are not warned of before an earthquake.C.Predicting earthquakes is thingabout her, however,is that she’s even swimming at all.She doesn’t have a tail.Grace lost her tail as a baby when she got caught up in a fish trap. When the dolphin arrived at the Ocean Park in December 2005,she was fighting for her life.“Is she going to make it?”Her trainer,Abbey Stone, feared the worst.Grace did make it—but her tail didn’t.She ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle.Over the past six years, she has learned to swim without her tail.Dolphins swim by moving their flukes and peduncle up and down.Grace taught herself to move another way—like a fish! She pushes herself forward through the water by moving her peduncle from side to side. The movements put harmful pressure on Grace’s backbone. So a company offered to create a man-made tail for her.The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn’t hurt her.The first time Grace wore the artificial tail, she soon shook it off and let it sink to the bottom of the pool. Now,she is still learning to use the tail. Some days she wears it for an hour at a time, others not at all.“The new tail isn’t necessary for her to feel comfortable,”says Stone,“but it helps to keep that range of motion(动作)and build muscles(肌肉).”Now,the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month,Grace will star in Dolphin Tale,a film that focuses on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her.Seeing Grace swim with her man-made tail gives people so much courage.9.When Grace first arrived at the Ocean Park, her trainer worried about her________.A.physical buildB.potential abilityC.chance of survivalD.adaptation to the surroundings10.A man-made tail is created for Grace to________.A.let her recover fasterB.make her comfortableC.adjust her way of swimmingD.help her perform better tricks11.The story of Grace inspires people to________.A.stick to their dreamsB.treat animals friendlyC.treasure what they haveD.face difficulties bravelyDIn April this year, lots of bags full of small change(零钱) were seen at bus stops in Tianjin. They were made for passengers to turn their notes into small change. And such an idea came from four students from Zhongbei Middle School,Tianjin.“People will surely feel worried when they take a bus without coins. We just want to do something to help them,”said Wang Yongcun,15,one of the four students. The four boys spent their whole weekend making the change bags. After that they went to see the number of the passengers at each bus stop near their school, and then chose the top six stops to put the bags. Many people think that the four boys have really done a good job. But,things didn’t go as the boys thought. Two days later, they found that the money was gone, and that even the bags were taken. It really made them sad but they would not give up.Their classmates and teachers came to help them in time. They put their pocket money in bags again. And the teachers also taught them to make better change bags. They tried their best to do it.The four boys feel very happy because they have done something good for the passengers.Their warm hearts are moving.More and more people are beginning to join in the activity.12.It took________the whole weekend to make the change bags.A.the passengers B.the teachersC.the four boys D.the The mountain bikers from an international biking group sure have! Reporter Ricky caught up with three of them — 18-year-old Michael Castellanos, 13-year-old Gerardo Mendez, and 16-year-old Jackie Luevano — to learn about their experiences with the group.Ricky:How often do you ride your bikes?Michael:Every day after school. But I ride on the weekend, too.Gerardo:I use my bike to get to and from school and to get to my after-school program. I don't like to ride my bike if it's snowing, though!Jackie:I only ride my bike in the summer, but when I do, I like to ride three times per week.Ricky:What's the difference between riding in the city and in the mountains?Michael:You have to follow more rules and laws when you ride your bike in the city. In the mountains there are laws but not as many.Jackie:It's harder riding in the mountains, but it's quieter. The hardest part is learning to use your gears (挡). I was used to riding a city bike that doesn't have gears and then when I started to ride in the mountains I had to learn that gears make it easier to ride.Ricky:What is the best part of the mountain rides?Jackie:My favorite thing is getting a break from being indoors. After being inside all day, it's nice to enjoy the clean air and feel the wind.Gerardo:Our group is usually really loud, but when we ride in the mountains, we are quieter and we can hear the birds and the water.31.Who goes to school by bike?A.Jackie. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. Only 23% of all plastic in America ends up in a recycling bin, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.It is a convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunken or eaten. To drink it, you can either peel off the membrane(薄膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. One problem the scientists have run into is how to ship large amounts of Ooho bubbles(水泡) without arriving with a very wet truck. However, they have attempted to package units of individual bubbles together inside a larger and thicker membrane. It is targeting large outdoor events, such as marathons, music festivals, and sporting events, where tons of plastic bottles are used, and frequently left behind as litter. And too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for their purpose of such a new invention. The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials needed to produce Ooho; they have recently applied a patent for their new advancements. The price for an individual bubble or a unit of bubbles has not been set yet, but they cost about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. It has appeared at events in London, San Francisco, Boston, at conferences, festivals, and so on.Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $ 1 million and gained 1,000 investors in only three days. It is mostly being sold at events at the moment to keep the consumer’s interest while the production machine is getting up and running. It is quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out this year for these bottles of the future.8.How is most plastic dealt with in America?A. It’s sold.B. It’s recycled.C. It’s buried.D. It’s wasted.9.Why did the team invent Ooho?A. To make a profit for a company.B. To protect the environtnent.C. To make people eat as they drink.D. To reduce the cost of plastic bottle.10.What can we infer about Ooho from the text?A. It is easy and safe to ship it in large amounts.B. It has become popular since it began to be sold.C. It might be sold at a lower price than plastic bottles.D. It cost the team a lot of money to develop the technology.11.What does the author really want to say in the last paragraph?A. Ooho is to be a success in the future.B. Ooho is being supported by smart people.C. Ooho is taking the place of plastic bottles now.D. Ooho is being produced to attract more investors.DWith only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project cal led “Noah’s Ark”.Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future. It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believe s. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to resultin one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, s o it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re b oth trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”12. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandasB. save endangered animals from dying outC. collect DNA of endangered animals to studyD. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another13. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.A. available panda eggsB. host animalsC. qualified researchersD. enough money14. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly u nderstood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”Jim Marland also said that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:· If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.· If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route (路线) as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.· Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in thecountryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.12.Scientists believe that ________.A.some babies are born with a sense of directionB.people learn a sense of direction as they grow olderC.people never lose their sense of directionD.everybody has a sense of direction from birth13.What is true of seven-year-old children according to the passage?A.
