Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.Opportunity is the same way. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to "get in" on a "ground floor opportunity", as if the opportunity will do all the work.Just as you need air to breathe, you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity. That's not up to the opportunity. That's up to you. It doesn't matter what "floor" the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.Section B: Translate the following passage from Chinese to English.徐霞客一生周游考察了十六个省,足迹几乎遍及全国。

2013年插本英语试卷范文
2013年插本英语试卷范文The Evolution of English as a Global Lingua Franca: From the British Empire to the Digital Age.The English language has undergone a remarkable transformation throughout history, evolving from its humble origins as a regional dialect in Anglo-Saxon England to its current status as the undisputed global lingua franca. This extraordinary journey has been shaped by a multitude of factors, including political, economic, technological, and cultural forces. The British Empire and the Spread of English. The British Empire played a pivotal role in the dissemination of English worldwide. As the sun never set on the empire, so too did the English language spread to every corner of the globe. Through colonization, trade, and diplomacy, English became the official language of many colonies, fostering inter-cultural communication within theempire and beyond.Industrialization and the Rise of the United States. The Industrial Revolution brought about significant economic and social changes, which further propelled the spread of English. The United States, as a major industrial power, played a crucial role in this process. American corporations expanded globally, bringing English as the language of business and technology. The Technological Revolution. The 20th century witnessed a technological revolution that had a profound impact on the spread of English. The advent of the telephone, telegraph, and radio facilitated communication across vast distances, making English the primary language of international communication. The emergence of the internet and the digital age further amplified English's reach, as it became the default language of the World Wide Web.Cultural Influence and the Media.English has also受益 from the widespread influence of American culture. Hollywood films, television shows, and music have become global phenomena, transmitting English-language content to millions of people around the world. This cultural osmosis has helped to popularize English and make it an aspirational language for many. The Impact of Globalization.Globalization has played a major role in the rise of English as a global lingua franca. Increased trade, travel, and investment have created a need for a common language to facilitate communication among diverse cultures. English has emerged as the language of choice for international organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. The Future of English. While English currently reigns supreme as the globallingua franca, its future trajectory is subject to ongoing debate. Some argue that the rise of non-native English speakers, coupled with the increasing prominence of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, may challenge English's dominance. However, others maintain that English is well-positioned to retain its status due to its widespread adoption in education, business, and technology. It is also a highly adaptable language, constantly evolving to meet the demands of a globalized world.Implications for Education and Society. The dominance of English as a global lingua franca has significant implications for education and society. On the one hand, it provides opportunities for individuals to access information, connect with people from different cultures, and pursue global careers. On the other hand, it also poses challenges for non-native speakers who may face language barriers that limittheir access to education, employment, and social participation. Ensuring equitable access to English language education is paramount for fostering inclusive and just societies.Conclusion.The evolution of English as a global lingua franca is a testament to its resilience and adaptability. From its humble beginnings to its current status as the world's most widely spoken language, English has been shaped by historical, political, economic, technological, andcultural forces. As the world continues to evolve, the future of English is uncertain. However, its dominance is unlikely to waverin the foreseeable future, as it remains the language of global communication, culture, and innovation.。

In Greece there are the ruins of a water system for baths built over 3 ,000 years ago. The Romans had warm public baths. In some baths,as many as 3,000 persons could bathe at the same time. Treating disease by taking baths has been popular for centuries. Modern medical baths first became popular in Europe and by the late 1700s bathing had also become popular in the United States. For many years frequent bathing was believed to be bad for one’s health. Ordinary bathing just to keep clean was avoided, and perfume was often used to cover up body smells! By the 1700s doctors began to say that soap and water were good for health. They believed that it was good for people to be clean. Slowly, people began to bathe more frequently. During the Victorian Age of the late 19th century, taking a bath on Saturday night became common. In the United States ordinary bathing was slow to become popular. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, many Americans were known as”The Great Unwashed!”In one American city, for example, a person was only allowed to take a bath every thirty days! That was a law! Frequency of bathing today is partly a matter of habit. People know that bathing for cleanliness is important to health. Doctors know that dirty bodies increase the chance of diseases. As a result,in the United States, people generally bathe often. Some people bathe once a day at least. They consider a daily bath necessary to good health.41.A water system for baths was built by______over 3 ,000 years ago.A.the RomansB.the GreeksC.the AmericansD.the Italians正确答案:B42.Which of the following statements is true?A.It’ s good for people to have bath only at night.B.It’ s good for people to keep clean by having baths.C.American people were not allowed to have a bath every 30 days.D.The more frequently we have baths, the better health we’ll be in.正确答案:B43.It was once believed that frequent bathing was______.A.necessaryB.commonC.bad for heathD.good for health正确答案:C44.The underlined word perfume probably means______.A.a sweet smelling substanceB.a hard smelling substanceC.a strange smelling substanceD.an unpleasant smelling substance正确答案:A45.From the passage, we can infer that______.A.bathing has become easier and cheaperB.everybody in America takes a daily bathC.a bath a day keeps the doctor away foreverD.bathing helps to reduce the chance of diseases正确答案:DFilling in company application forms can become a boring and repetitive task, yet any carelessness on an applicant’ s part can draw a negative reaction from readers. Each company or organization usually uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the same basic information, may vary in detail. Consequently the suggestions below apply mainly to the approach you should take rather than suggest what you should write. ------- When visiting future employers, always carry your personal data record with you so that you can readily search for details such as dates, telephone numbers, and other useful information. -------Treat every application form as though it is the first one you are completing. Write carefully and neatly. ------- Use words that describe the responsibility and different aspects of each job you have held rather than list only the duties you performed. -------Particularly describe social activities that show your involvement in the community, or activities in which you held a teaching or coaching role. -------Pay particular attention if there is a section on the form that asks you to comment on how your education and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.-------Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say shows a natural progression from past experience to the job you are applying for. If you can, and if they fit naturally, add a few words to demonstrate how the position fits your overall career plan.46.The first sentence of the passage means that______.A.you may have to fill in a long application formB.the filling-in of an application form takes much timeC.any slight error in the tiring filling-in of the forms should be avoidedD.application forms are usually difficult to read and require good skills to fill in 正确答案:C47.Although all application forms demand the same basic information,______.A.different companies may have different requirementsB.different companies may have different attitudes toward themC.applicants may be required to answer all the questions in detailD.applicants are very familiar with different application forms正确答案:A48.Which of the following statements about your personal data is true?A.They will be of much help to your interviewB.They are more important than the interviewC.They should be written as simply as possibleD.They should include all your personal information正确答案:A49.When writing about the duties of your jobs, you should______.A.only describe your social activitiesB.list only the duties you performedC.focus on your involvement in the communityD.try to include more details正确答案:D50.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.Nature of Filling in Application FormsB.Importance of Filling in Application FormsC.Critical Details for Filling in Application FormsD.Jobs and Their Filling in Application Forms正确答案:COn Thursday afternoon Mrs. Clarke, dressed for going out, took her handbag with her money and her key in it, pulled the door behind her to lock it and went to the Over 60s Club. She always went there on Thursdays. It was a nice outing for an old woman who lived alone. At six o’ clock she came home, let herself in and at once smelt cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke in her house? How? How? Had someone got in? She checked the back door and the windows. All were locked or fastened, as usual. There was no sign of forced entry. Over a cup of tea she wondered whether someone might have a key that fitted her front door—“a master key” perhaps. So she stayed at home the following Thursday. Nothing happened. Was anyone watching her movements? On the Thursday after that she went out at her usual time, dressed as usual, but she didn’ t go to the club. Instead she took a short cut home again, letting herself in through her garden and the back door. She settled down to wait. It was just after four o’ clock when the front door bell rang. Mrs. Clarke was making a cup of tea at the time. The bell rang again, and then she heard her letter-box being pushed open. With the kettle of boiling water in her hand, she moved quietly towards the front door. A long piece of wire appeared through the letter-box, and then a hand. The wire turned and caught around the knob(门把)on the door-lock. Mrs. Clarke raised the kettle and poured the water over the hand. There was a shout outside, and the skin seemed to drop off the fingers like a glove.
