Need to know: Latitude takes place in mid-July on the grounds of Henham Park.
Big Green Gathering

One night in March 2015, LeeAnne Walters heard her daughter, Kaylie, shout. Kaylie, 18, had been taking a shower. A large amount of hair had fallen out of her head. What made Kaylie’s hair fall out? Dirty water. The Walters family lived in Flint, Michigan. For months, the water in Flint had been dangerously polluted.
The problem started in April 2014, when Flint changed its water supply. Flint is a struggling city. Many of its residents(居民)are poor. Therefore, local officials decided to get water more cheaply from the Flint River.
Water from the river came out of the tap brown and smelly. It tasted bad. Some people got rashes(疹子)when they bathed. Many people complained. But officials said the water was fine.
The water contained harmful bacteria, chemicals, and salt. The chemicals and salt rotted away the metal inside Flint’s water pipes. Lead, a metal in the pipes, got into the water. Using water with lead in it is harmful to people’s health. Lead can cause stomach problems, hair loss, and brain damage. Lead poisoning is worst for children. They can have serious issues, like learning disabilities, for the rest of their lives. There is no cure.
In September 2015, a doctor found that many Flint children had high levels of lead in their blood. Officials finally listened. Flint went back to using clean water. But all the lead pipes in the city must be replaced before the water will be safe again. That will take a lot of money and time. LeeAnne Walters and her family moved away last fall. But she worries that her children will have problems for life. Many people in Flint, including kids, still don’t have safe water. The Flint water crisis isn’t over yet.

B. The chemicals produced by Flint.
C. The introduction of Flint’s water pipes.

A. The water in Flint is safe again.
B. Many Flint’s residents have moved away.
C. The frightening effects will last for years in Flint.
D. It takes the residents little money to solve the problems.

Who would have thought that there was any connection between a cup of coffee and a bird, butterfly, or even a bat? Such seems to be the case, however, as methods for growing coffee plants have gradually changed over time.
Coffee plants were first discovered growing in Africa hundreds of years ago. The plants grew under a wide cover of forests, which protected the coffee plant’s leaves from the burning sun. As coffee was introduced to other countries, farmers would naturally try to grow the plants in the shade of tall trees. These trees provided more than shade for coffee plants; they were also home for many species of birds, insects, and other plants.
Over the past 30 to 40 years, people developed a new kind of coffee plant, one which grows well in open sunlight. Sun-grown coffee produced two times more coffee than shade-grown coffee in the same amount of time and space. As a result, the growing need for coffee makes the sun-grown method appear to be the best way to grow coffee.
However, this newer method has some unexpected results. First, the lack of tree cover leaves the land open to heavy rainfall, which can wash away the soil’s nutrients(营养物质). This necessitates an increased use of fertilizers(化肥)and additives(添加剂), which is likely to create health risks. Second, as forests are taken down to make way for sun-grown
coffee plants, native and migratory birds no longer have a home. This is threatening many species, and the effect is now being examined and recorded by ornithologists, who are discovering sharp falls in some species that travel to the northern United States each year. Finally, more pesticides(农药)are used in the sun-grown method, all of which have a bad influence on both the environment and the long-term health of the coffee plants themselves.
Today, as more people recognize the problems of coffee grown in the sun, perhaps they will be willing to pay the higher prices, encouraging coffee growers to return to the more natural method of producing this worldwide product.
28. Under what conditions can coffee plants grow naturally?
A. There is much hot sunshine.
B. There is enough heavy rainfall.
C. There are tall trees around them.
D. There are lots of nutrients in the soil.
29. Compared with shade-grown coffee, sun-grown coffee_________.
A. grows more slowly
B. tastes much better
C. is more expensive
D. is more productive
30. What do ornithologists most probably do?
A. Study birds.
B. Grow coffee.
C. Protect forests.
D. Make pesticides.
31. The text mainly explains the connection between .
A. coffee and forests
B. coffee and sunlight
C. coffee farmers and animals
D. coffee production and the environment

When Ruben Rausing presented a new idea for packaging milk in 1952 many people shook their heads in disbelief. The invention, which he named Tetra Pak, looked like a miniature pyramid(金字塔)and was made out of paper. Some feared it would leak(渗漏); others said they would much rather stick to glass bottles.
In spite of this resistance(抵制), Rausing did not give up. Today his ideas are used all over the world. Since the 1950s, the Rausings have become one of the four richest families
in the world. They run an international company producing some 30-40 billion units a year of packaging, for milk, cream, soft drinks and even table wine.
Ruben Rausing’s idea was that milk should be packaged in a way similar to how sausage meat is crammed(塞入)into a skin. He invented a machine that produced a long paper tube that could be cut off and sealed at both ends after having been filled with milk.
His first model, the pyramid-shaped Tetra, soon became a hit. Shoppers found it lighter to carry than traditional milk bottles. But it had a serious disadvantage—it was taking up too much space in the fridge. So Rausing went on to make a small box. This model was easier to store, and is today the most common kind of packaging in many countries throughout the world. In Europe, one out of two milk packages are made from the Rausing empire. It has conquered a big market share in Asia and Australia. Ruben Rausing was not only a clever inventor. He also understood how to run a successful business. He and his two sons, Gad and Hans, built up Tetra Pak as a family-owned group of some 40 companies, almost all of them in the packaging industry.
Though their products are famous, the Rausings live a secluded life. They are wary of showing off their wealth and so try to avoid publicity(宣扬), particularly since an attempt was made to kidnap(绑架)one of the family members some years ago.
32. How did people feel about Tetra Pak at first?
A. Hopeful.
B. Uncaring.
C. Satisfied.
D. Doubtful.
33. Compared with the first type of Tetra Pak, the second one .
A. was harder
B. was smaller
C. was less common
D. was more expensive
34. What can we infer about Rausing from Paragraph 4?
A. He was not a clever inventor.
B. He was good at doing business.
C. He succeeded in many different industries.
D. He controlled half of Asia’s milk production.
35. The underlined part “wary of” in the last paragraph probably means .

For most parents and other caregivers, summer is by far the best season to connect kids with nature. The weather’s nice, and the youngsters are out of s chool. 36 So don’t miss the opportunity to schedule some outdoor time. Here are a few tips to help you along the way:
Nature is all around us. 37 For small kids, there’s likely plenty in the backyard, courtyard, or schoolyard. National parks are great, but kids foster a deep connection with nature close to home!
38 Don’t worry too much about what to do once you arrive at your nature-rich destination. What kids really need is free time to engage all their senses and use their imaginations.
You can learn too. What counts is simply to get out there, show that you value the outdoors, and be ready to have fun. 39 In fact, it is not necessary for you to know anything at all about science or nature. And remember, questions are more powerful than answers anyway!
Sit back and watch your kids learn. Don’t be too much of a helicopter parent, always saying “no”. Instead, try to spare more time to stay with your kids when necessary.
40 And let kids take some risks. Most of us climbed trees, played with sticks, and got muddy as kids — and we lived to tell the story. The nature connection is a contact sport, and both kids and nature can take it!
No matter the weather or time of day you can have an adventure together with your kids. Alright, get those kids outside, into nature, making their own discoveries!
A. Allow your kids to be kids.
B. It’s okay not to have a plan.
C. Pay close attention to your kids.
D. Parents often take time off as well.
E. You don’t need to be an expert on nature.
F. You typicall y don’t have to go far to find nature.
G. Sometimes it is necessary to turn to experts for advice.

Dear friends:
Some students in our school have the habit of eating snacks instead of meals, which is harmful to their health. We’d like to call on all students to develop healthy eating habits.
As we all know, if we eat snakes frequently, the chemicals they contain will build up inside our body and harm our body. Besides, snakes don’t provide enough nutrients that our body needs to function well for the whole day. Therefore, we would call on you to take
meals instead of snakes.
Let’s have a healthy diet from now on. Let’s eat more fruit and vegetables every day to prevent diseases so that we can keep healthy.

I felt so relaxed and now I feel like a completely different person. It was wonderful! (20) That is the most unforgettable experience I’ve ever had!。
