第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.
Gates said in an inter view with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades aft er that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”
Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Ni ck Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.
It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!
1、The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text________.
A.better-known B.more persuasive
C.better-organized D.more interesting
2、An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.
A.it is much cleverer than us B.it would take over the world
C.it has the strong feeling of destroying us D.it would see us just as material
3、How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?
A.Optimistic B.Worried
C.Disappointed D.Regretful
4、What does the text mainly focus on?
A.The benefits of future robots. B.The new applications of robots.
C.The concern for super intelligence. D.The popularity of robots in the future.
22.(8分)It is commonly believed that in medieval France, New Year was celebrated on 1 April. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, changing New Year to 1 January. With no modern communications, news travelled slowly and new ideas were often questioned. Many people did not hear of the change,
some merely forgot, and others chose to ignore it. These people were called fools. Invitations to non-existent “New Year” parties were sent and other practical jokes were played. Over time playing tricks on 1 April became a tradition. The custom eventually spread to England and Scotland, and it was later transported across the Atlantic to the American colonies (殖民地) of the English and the French. April Fools’ Day has now devel oped into an international festival of fun, with different nationalities celebrating the day in special ways.
France and Italy
In France and Italy, if someone plays a trick on you, you are the “fish of April”. By the month of April fish have only just hatc hed and are therefore easy to catch. Children stick paper fish to their Friends’ backs and chocolate fish are found in the shops.
America and Britain
Today, Americans and the British play small tricks on friends and strangers alike on 1 April. A common trick is to point to a friend’s shoe and say “Y our shoelace(鞋带) is untied.” When they look down, they are laughed at. Schoolchildren might tell a friend that school has been cancelled. Sometimes the media get involved. Once, a British short film was shown on April Fools’ Day about spaghetti farmers and how they harvest their crop from spaghetti trees!
Scotland
In Scotland, April Fools’ Day lasts for two days! The second day is called “Taily Day” and tricks on this day involve the bottom (or the “tail”, in informal speech). Often a sign saying ‘kick me’ is stuck onto someone’s back without them knowing.
1、In what condition would someone be called “fish of April” in France?
A.When one is fooled.
B.If one is fond of fish.
C.When one fools others.
D.If one prefers chocolate.
2、What was the purpose of the British short film?
A.To help the audience.
B.To trick the audience.
C.To warn the audience.
D.To inform the audience.
3、Where does April Fools’ Day last for more than one day?
A.Italy. B.France.
C.America. D.Scotland.
23.(8分)Feelingsoftenrun high where insects are concerned, with many people even sick when seeing them, let alone touch or swallow them. And yet insects present a huge nutritional opportunity as an increasing globalpopulation seeks more sources of food and feed.
Insects have generally high levels of animal protein and key micronutrients with lower environmentalfootprints than traditional alternatives, and they can be raised on leftovers. But cultural, social and economicproblems
remain, reports an article published today in Nutrition Bulletin.
“Insects present a nutritional opportunity, but it is unclear how their nutritional quality is influenced bywhat they are fed,”says Darja Dobermann,a researcher at the University of Nottingham.“In idealconditions, inse cts have a smaller environmental impact than most traditional western forms of animal protein; less known is how to raise insect production while maintaining these environmental benefits.”
“Studies overall show that insects could make valuable economic and nutritional contributions to the foodor feed systems, but there are no clear regulations in place to bring insects into such supply systems withoutthem turning into a more expensive version of poultry(家禽)for food,” says Dobermann.
The article highlights how insects have been a source of food for hundreds of years in more than 100countries with over 2,000 species that can be eaten; in central Africa,up to 50% of dietary protein has comefrom insects, with their market value higher than many alternative sources of animal protein.
Insects need to be large enough to make the effort of catching them worthwhile and easy to locate, preferably in predictably large quantities. They are consumed at various life stages,as raw, fried, boiled, roasted or ground food.
1、Which of the following is the advantage of raising insects for food?
A.It will offer people work opportunities.
B.It is environmentally friendly.
C.It will replace traditional food.
D.It will result in less leftovers
2、What can be inferred from Dobermann’s words?
A.Raising insects for food has become popular.
B.Raising insects can’t solve food problems.
C.More should be done to raise insects for food.
D.More money can be made by raising insects.
3、What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 stand for?
A.Insects. B.Regulations.
C.Feed systems. D.Supply systems.
4、Which is the possible title of this passage?
A.How to Raise Insects B.Raising Insects for Money
C.Insects Seem No Longer Ugly D.A New Source of Food
24.(8分)Is there a way to turn back the aging process in people? For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink its water, you will not age.
Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears that the answer may be called the hypothalamus, which is part of your brain. It controls important body activities, including growth, the way we process food and so on.
Researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus neural stem cells (干细胞) also influence how fast aging takes place.
Dongsheng Cai, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, was the leading researcher in a study on aging in mice. He and his team reported their findings.
“Aging speed can be controlled by a particular place in the body, which is the hypothalamus. And it can be controlled by a particular type of cells, which are hypothalamus stem cells.” He adds that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body. So when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.
Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. They did this by injecting the animals with stem cells.
The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. “When we injected the hypothalamus stem cells to the middle-aged mice, the mice aged slowly and they can also live longer.”
But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in human beings.
“If we can translate what we have seen in animals to humans, I think humans can function better during later ages.” Cai and his team say their studies may have other benefits. They say the findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of age-related health issues.
1、Why does the author mention the “fountain of youth” in the first paragraph?
A.To explain what the “fountain of youth” is.
B.To introduce the hypothalamus.
C.To show how to find the “fountain of youth”.
D.To help people find the “fountain of youth”.
2、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The brain. B.The aging process.
C.Hypothalamus. D.The stem cell
3、What do we know about the study done by Cai?
A.They have found a way to turn back the aging process.
B.The brain controls growth, reproduction and the way we process food.
C.The decrease of hypothalamus stem cells can lead to aging.
D.The finding has been applied to human beings.
4、Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A.The Fountain of Youth
B.A New Discovery about Aging
C.The Ways of Slowing Down Aging
D.Hypothalamus—the Fountain of Youth
25.(10分)On a cool morning, Wilson Kasaine walks along a dirt path in southern Kenya. Actually, Kasaine is tracking lions. Particularly, he is tracking one lion called Marti.
Tracking lions on foot may sound dangerous, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life. Born in a traditional Maasai family, he understood the beauty and risk of the wildlife. Living with big game forces him to develop a good sense of where animals have been and where they might be going. During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints of a lion from those of other animals.
Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid other dangerous animals. But maybe Kasaine didn’t know that, years later, he would be tracking lions specifically to encounter them and to protect them. Today he leads a small group of wide-eyed tourists over a red sandy path in the reserve, searching for the lion that has left upon it his unmistakable prints.
Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come to Kenya’s national parks to try to visit the “big five”: elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes, and lions. The attraction of these animals to people all over the world means that the nation’s economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya’s wildlife disappears, so does its second-largest source of income.
Considering the r apid urban development in Kenya, this isn’t unimaginable. In 2016, a study shows that many of the nation’s most treasured species have fallen to less than one-third of their population counting from just 40 years ago. The number of lions fell too. In 1998, the nation was home to over 15,000; only about 2,000 remain today. Several experts have predicted they could disappear entirely from the country in the next two decades.
Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya must be at the sacrifice of other things. People were forced to leave their land
and into smaller surrounding regions. Communities like Kasaine’s are now finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But they are glad that their sacrifice really makes a difference.
1、What did Kasaine learn on his way to school and back home?
A.The beauty and risk of the wildlife.
B.The method of telling different plants.
C.The skills of telling different paw prints.
D.The lifestyle of a traditional Maasai family.
2、What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The lion. B.The path.
C.The reserve. D.The group.
3、Why is Kenya making efforts to protect wildlife?
A.To improve the nation’s economy.
B.To offer more jobs to the local people.
C.To show the importance of the “big five”.
D.To set a good example to other countries.
4、What do we know from the fifth paragraph?
A.The lions in Kenya are in danger of dying out.
B.The number of species declined seriously in 2016.
C.The nation’s economy is experiencing a very hard period.
D.Species in Kenya decreased every year in the recent ten years.
5、How does Kasaine feel about his sacrifice?
A.Unpleasant. B.Hopeful.
C.Doubtful. D.Worthwhile.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear classmates, may I have your attention, please? Now I’d like to make a speech here. Nowadays, there’s countless waste on our campus. For instance, the lights in the classrooms are left on even in the daytime, the water remains running after some students wash their hands and hundreds of kilograms of leftover food can be collected from the table in the school cafeteria after each meal.
My heart aches every time I witness the scene. It is high time to realize its harm as listed below. Firstly, natural resources are limited and some day they will be exhausted. Moreover, waste loads financial burden of our parents. After all, we are consumers rather than money makers.
How to reduce the waste? Personally, it is everyone’s business to fight against it. I should start with myself to save everything. Please take the lead in reducing waste.
Surely, with everyone doing his bit, the poor situation will be changed soon! Thank you for your listening!。
