People sometimes say,“It’s raining cats and dogs!” when there is a heavy rain. Nobody has ever really seen cats and dogs falling from the sky, but there have been many reports of other strange t hings“raining” down. In 1956, the people of a town in the USA saw a small black cloud in the sky. It started to rain from the cloud normally, but only in a small area. The cloud then turned white, and fish started to fall to the ground. Most of them were still alive.During a storm in July 1901, in Minneapolis, people heard something falling from the sky that did not sound like rain. When they went outside, they found all types of frogs covering four streets. There are other reports of strange“rains” failing from the sky including worms, insects and snakes. Can these strange“rains” be explained by science? Scientists usually say that a tornado (龙卷风) has picked up the animals from a river or ocean, carried them for miles, and then dropped them somewhere else. But this does not completely explain all of them. On May 15, 1890, in Italy, there was a rain of blood¾birds’ blood. Scientists said that flying birds must have been torn to pieces by strong winds. But if so, why did only their blood fall from the sky , and not other parts of their bodies? And anyway, there were no strong winds that day!1. What does it mean when people say,“It’s raining cats and dogs”? A. Cats and dogs are falling from the sky. B. It’s raining heavily. C. Animals started to fall to the ground. D. AHave you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there. So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving’ would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you’re going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people — they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations. However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun –I’d miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made–should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?I’m not certain I’d want a driverless car –but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and popular on our roads.1. When using a driverless car, you need only .A. read the road signs carefullyB. check the camerasC. put the address into the computerD. remember the directions2. The third paragraph mainly tells us about the of driverless cars.A. instructionsB. standardsC. advantagesD. tests3. The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means ““.A. possiblyB. successfullyC. especiallyD. naturally4. What’s the writer’s opinion about future driverless cars?A. They’ll cause more accidents.B. They’ll be less expensive.C. They’ll use less energy.D. They’ll run much faster.参考答案1C 2C 3A 4BBDo you like to meet new people? Do you like to talk, or are you shy? Rock climbing (攀岩) did not become a sport until late inthe 1900s. But now it has become a popular outdoor activity. If you have ever done rock climbing, you will know that itis not an easysport. Indoor and outdoor rock climbing both need practice. What most people don’t know is that rock climbing is one of the sports that depend onyour body and will (意志).To climb successfully, one must use wonderful skills. One of the important rules is to always have three parts of your body on the rock face. Another important rule is that your arms only hold you close to the rock face while your legs are pushing you up. The closer you are to the rock face, the easier it is to climb.Rock climbing is a wonderful sport. Once you start to learn how to climb, you'll find more fun. People who like games such as chess playing or problem-solving may love rock climbing, because they are nearly the same in the way of thinking. For anyone who wants to get into beautiful shape, rock climbing is a fun and good way. Anyone who enjoys a difficult game and loves the outdoors should think of taking rock climbing as a new hobby. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Books and papers were spread out all over the room and little Tommy was hard at work. His mother was surprised. She called him down to dinner and as soon as he finished eating, he went back to his room, without a word. In no time he was back hitting the books as hard as before. This went on for some time, day after day while the mother tried to understand what was happening. Finally, little Tommy brought home his report card. People sometimes say, “It’s raining cats and dogs!” when there is a heavy rain. Nobody has ever really seen cats and dogs falling from the sky, but there have been many reports of other strang e things “raining” down. There are other reports of strange “rains” failing from the sky including worms, insects and snakes. Can these strange “rains” be explained by science? Scientists usually say that a tornado (龙卷风) has picked up the animals from a river or ocean, carried them for miles, and then dropped them somewhere else. But this does not completely explain all of them. On May 15, 1890, in Italy, there was a rain of blood ¾birds’ blood. Scientists said that flying birds must have been torn to pieces by strong winds. But if so, why did only their blood fall from the sky , and not other parts of their bodies? And anyway, there were no strong winds that day!1. What does it mean when people say, “It’s raining cats and dogs”?A. Cats and dogs are falling from the sky.B. It’s raining heavily.C. Animals started to fall to the ground.D. There is a black cloud.2.
