By day, Jonah Swann is in Grade Seven at Reed Middle School in Missouri, US. But after school, the 13-year-old boy works as the CEO of The Kandle Company. The company sells candles.
Swann has been interested in business for a long time. But he didn’t want to just take business classes. He wanted real hands-on experience. He got the chance when a friend of his family bought a candle-making machine and gave it to Swann.
To get started, Swann had to learn how to use the machine , find the right ingredients and think about how to sell his candles. He wanted the packaging to look attractive.
“It was a lot of trail and error , really”, he told the lo cal newspaper News-Leader.
Swann’s candles are different from others that are now on the market. His candles are made of 100-percent soy wax and non-zinc wickers. This makes them burn clearly. They come in two sizes and smells, including lavender and pine. He has set up a website to sell the candles online.
For Swann, making money is not the final goal. He plans to give away 10 percent of his company’s profit to support study programs at his school. Have you ever eaten at a Western restaurant? If so, do you remember what the restaurant menus are quite different from Chinese restaurant menus. But how are they different?
Most Western restaurant menus do not have as many pictures as Chinese ones do. In some fancy Western restaurants, the menus might not have any pictures at all. But most Western menus show a list of ingredients for each dish.
If you order a burger, the menu might tell you that the burger has cheese, ketchup and mustard. The menu can also tell you how the food is cooked, for example, whether it is fried or steamed. Western restaurants use many different methods to design their menus and make them more attractive. In fact, there is a whole industry called "menu engineering", according to the BBC Menu engineers are experts at designing menus. Their menus can increase sales and influence customer thoughts. A well-designed menu can encourage customers to eat certain dishes. It can even make them believe that your restaurant’s food is of higher quality, even if they haven’t eaten the food.
For example, using descriptive words like "juicy" or" cheesy" can help dishes sell better. Instead of just writing "steaks" in their menu, a restaurant might write "sizzling steak”. This makes the steak sound more delicious. As we know, people pay the most attention to the dishes at the top of a page. This is the best place for dishes that you want to promote.
As you can see, menus are not just simple lists of food.
