My father died in December. He had spent the last several years in hospital, and my mother spent a lot of her time taking care of him. That is, without doubt, a situation for any family. And the result was a team of fairly frustrated family members.
My biggest frustration was trying to why he didn't make choices that would him to be involved more fully in the lives of his grandchildren. Yes, he each and every one of them. Every moming he asked my mother which of his grandbabies was going to that day. He had frequent visits from his grandkids and looked forward to them. Kids would have the place up instantly —toys everywhere, cushions off the couches and the TV channel to their station. Every visit was a kid invasion into his space. Interestingly, he was not bothered by the or chaos at all. He was never with them and he certainly never shouted at any child. Visits ended with hugs and kisses.
I felt that relationship wasn't good enough because he didn't actually do anyihing wiih my children. My dad didn't read to the children, and they played games together. He didn't take them out for walks or do any of the other things I saw active grandparents did. It made me sad that he was to get on with the kids.
A couple of weeks- after his death, my daughter turned up in my bedroom at midnight io share a of him done by herself. Included in the picture were several . The most strikmg one to me was "I loved everything about you, Grandpa". Apparently, I was . All that time I thought he wasn't doing anyihing, but he was very actively doing the thing that was most to my kids. He loved them. And it was all they needed.

Several weeks ago, I was doing homework with my son, who is in the third grade, and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math problems. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn't even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much more accurate and came up much quicker when he stood up. Could he be more focused while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what we always believe. We tend to believe that being quiet and calm is a sure way to success. Such a child will have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life. Kids that are active and loud will only be objects of stares, and parents would say, " My kids will not be like that, I can assure you."
However, later on some of these parents would come to realize that their kids were born with their own set of DNA and personality traits. They may not act the way you expect them to act, and all you can do is to love and accept them. As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids' best cheerleaders.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating, just in his own way and not mine. We need to learn to accept our kids' ways of doing things. The old way may have worked for us but it doesn't mean we need to carry it on for generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy, and
that's just the way I want my kids to live their life.
