In daily life, personal greetings are much more frequently used in Chinese language than in English language, while non-personal greetings are preferred in English language. The reason for that is that in English culture, personal facts are regarded as one’s privacy which people do not like to talk about with other people except intimate friends, while in Chinese culture, these greetings are used to show considerations towards others. English newspaper headlines uses a special vocabulary. A headline contracts a lot of information into a short space and hence in headlines we often see. In order to conserve space in headlines is to use “short” words instead of long ones. In the example below notice the various ways the headline writer can shorten the headline * Short words “Foreign Aid: A Hard Look” “Google Settles Ad Probe for $500 Million”
Foreign Aid: A Hard Look The foreign aid bill that finally limped through the Senate last week took the worst beating in the 17year history of the program. But it was nothing compared to what will surely happen next time unless the Johnson Administration makes wholesale changes in the shape, size and aims of the program. Even Arkansas' Senator J. William Fulbright, long a staunch friend to foreign aid, has served warning. The only reason that the Foreign Relations Committee, which he chairs, did not recommend an end to foreign aid was, he said, the expectation that the next program will be "revamped in major respects."
Reading Skill: Understanding Headline Vocabulary
Newspaper, along with reporting the news, instructs, entertains, and gives opinions. A newspaper has separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, comics, classified ads, etc. You can be a better reader, if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, when you read a newspaper you usually look quickly at headlines first. Newspaper headlines have a language of their own and it is necessary to learn about it.
Chinese native speaker who learns English as a foreign language communicate with English speaker, it’s better to transfer Chinese rules to English. Otherwise, misunderstanding or joke may takes place during cross-cultural communication. For example, “Are you busy today?” is often use as a greeting in Chinese culture, but a requesting in English language.
