Leia was fresh out of college when she began working as a member of a business-development team at a company. Though her skills had earned her the job, she was the youngest person in the team. “Everybody else was pretty much twice my age,” she says. “I exhibited” too much ambition’ in the eyes of my superiors. I heard about comments being made behind my back. There were even a couple of times when my superiors referred to my age right in front of me, saying I was too young: “What does a 23-year-old know about these things?”
Leia tried to change her appearance at work. “I changed the way I dressed. I tried to dress older, more ‘ladylike’. I changed my mannerisms and tried to act older,” she says. “It worked, to an extent.” The comments about her age and inexperience lessened, but Leia says she still felt like her growth potential was limited. She left the company soon after.
What Leia experienced was ageism, traditionally seen as something only older people face. For instance, older workers might be judged based on assumptions that they won’t fit into a progressive office or learn technology quickly. A US study showed that nearly two-thirds of workers aged 45 and older had seen or experienced age discrimination. But younger workers face age discrimination, too. In fact, new research shows it may actually be the youngest team members who are bearing the brunt of workplace ageism right now, potentially impacting their careers.
Leia says removing ageism entirely will ultimately require a fundamental change to corporate culture, which has long tied seniority to skill. “We prize years of experience a little
too much, and I don’t think years of experience and skill are necessarily correlated,” she says. “Steve Jobs was 21 when he founded Apple. We don’t know how much younger people actually have to contribute. Hopefully, more employers are realizing it.”
4.What did Leia’s co-workers mainly talk about behind her back?
A.Her appearance.B.Her younger age.

B.They have trouble adapting to a progressive office.
C.They experience more ageism than younger workers.
D.A small part of them were faced with age discrimination.
7.Why does Leia mention Steve Jobs in the last paragraph?
A.To share information about Apple Company.
B.To tell us Steve Jobs’ major contributions.
C.To show that age and experience are not connected.
D.To prove that experience matters to young people.
As artificial intelligence(AI) systems become more advanced, we can expect them to be used more often in the world of human medicine and healthcare. AI is designed to imitate(模仿)the human brain in decision making and learning, so with the computing power to learn tasks in days or even hours, it is possible to create medical AIs that rapidly outperform doctors in certain tasks.
Data plays a hugely important role in helping AI systems learn about human medicine. AI systems are trained on large data sets gathered from real-life cases. Providing detailed patient information in quantities is a crucial factor for their success.
One of the most important areas for influencing global health is in the field of epidemiology(流行病学)。
Predicting disease outbreaks can save millions of lives by having
resources ready should the worst happen. Startup AIME has successfully combined public health data with machine learning and AI to create a prediction engine capable of anticipating epidemics months in advance with great accuracy.
Another field where medical AIs are making rapid advances is in diagnostics(诊断学)。
Doctors base a lot of decisions on information from X-ray, CT and MRI images. Speeding up. diagnoses from patient scans can rapidly improve patient care and outcomes. Computer vision AIs use pattern recognition to work through these images with incredible speed and accuracy. They have been able to outperform junior doctors and even senior specialists in some tests.
Cardiologist(心脏科医生)Rima Arnaout developed an AI that beat human experts at correctly interpreting echocardiograms(超声心动图)by 92 percent to 79 percent. She said that despite the result there is no prospect of AI replacing human doctors any time soon. “As cardiologists, we read the images and then go to see the patient,” she said. “So we're both reading images and practicing medicine. I don't think that the second piece will be taken over so quickly. ”
The acceptance of AI in medicine will continue to gather pace in the future as it becomes more widespread.
8.What played a big role in helping AI systems know of human medicine?
A.Certain tasks.
B.Large data.
C.The skill to imitate.
D.The increasing demand.
9.Why is Startup AIME mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To illustrate predicting disease is possible.
B.To call on doctors to focus on public health data.
C.To prove it's a successful company in global health.
D.To let readers realize the importance of early success.
10.What do we know about computer vision AIs?
A.They do better than doctors in some tests.
B.They speed up diagnoses from patient scans.
C.They can rapidly improve patients' conditions.
D.They analyze information from X-ray, CT and MRI images.
11.What do Rima Arnaout's words in paragraph 5 imply?
A.AIs are not so smart as human doctors.
B.It's not easy for AIs to take the place of human doctors.
C.A cooperation between AIs and human doctors is a must.
D.Human doctors are playing a big role in practicing medicine.
The British has obeyed the “keep to the left” rule for long. Have you ever wondered why? There is a historical reason for this: it’s all to do with keeping your sword hand free! In the Middle Ages you never knew who you were going to meet when travelling on horseback. Most people are right-handed, so if a stranger passed by on the right of you, your right hand would be free to use your sword if required.
Indeed the “keep to the left” rule goes back even further in time; archaeologists have discovered evidence suggesting that the Romans drove carts and wagons on the left, and it is known that Roman soldiers always marched on the left. This “rule of the road” was officially sanctioned in 1300 AD when Pope (教皇) Boniface Ⅷ declared that all pilgrims (朝圣者) travelling to Rome should keep to the left.
This continued until the late 1700s when large wagons became popular for transporting goods. These wagons were drawn by several pairs of horses and had no driver’s seat. Instead, in order to control the horses, the driver sat on the horse at the back left, thus keeping his whip hand free. Sitting on the left however made it difficult to judge the traffic coming the other way, as anyone who has driven a left-hand drive car along the winding lanes of Britain will agree!
In Britain there wasn’t much call tor these massive wagons and the smaller British vehicles had seats for the driver to sit on behind the horses. As most people are right-handed, the driver would sit to the right of the seat so his whip hand was free. Traffic congestion in 18th century London led to a law being passed to make all traffic on London Bridge keep to the left in order to reduce collisions. This rule was incorporated (并入) into the Highway Act of 1835 and was adopted throughout the British Empire.
12.What probably happened in the Middle Ages?
A.Passers-by walked on the right.B.Strangers fought every time they met.
C.People would be attacked by strangers.D.Tourists travelled everywhere without limit.
13.What does the underlined word “sanctioned” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Recognized.B.Designed.C.Explained.D.Postponed. 14.What was the attitude of drivers in the late 18th century to driving on the left?

57.阅读下面材料,割据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY'', and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You're welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn't only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades."
“Of course I will." I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn't pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn't get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because
a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A's and B's on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn't believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
