While many local teens spent their summers playing by the pool, Shea Frenyea-Provost brought her talents to life, leaving a lasting memory for years to come.
After five weeks, the 15-year-old's artwork is now on show in People's Park for all to see as the Village of Dannemora's first outdoor mural(壁画)—symbolic of the ongoing efforts to give new energy to the village and all it has to offer.
For the young artist, the project took her out of the comfort zone(舒适区)—going from colored pencils and sketchbooks(素描本) to her first life-size mural—the first in what will now become a series of projects between the local teen and village.
With her mom active in the village's growing Beautification Committee, Shea also got involved with volunteering. After seeing Shea's sketches during the early stages of the mural planning, Tina Leduc, director of Beautification Committee, was awed by her talent and knew she was a perfect fit for the project.
With the help of her family, Shea was soon set up with her very own studio, where she spent weeks researching the Luna moth (蛾), observing its outline and perfecting each final detail. "I used a projector(投影仪) to observe the moth for weeks and researched native plants in our area and the rest I really ended up doing freehand," Shea said, pointing to the fine lines of the climbing grape plants and moth antennas(触角).
For the Beautification Committee and villagers alike, her work has brought a welcomed new addition to the park while clearly showing her bright artistic future ahead. "She's just such a natural," said Leduc, who offered beginning guidance, otherwise leaving the creativity and design to the promising young artist. "I feel this is just the beginning for her. I know it is. We're going to see so much from her."
4、What can we learn about Shea's mural?
A. It is the first indoor mural in her village.
B. It shows the history of her village.
C. It took her a month to complete.
D. It was a real challenge for her.
5、What does the underlined word "awed" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Amazed
B. Encouraged
C.Changed
D. Affected
6、Which of the following can best describe Shea?
A. Creative and humorous.
B. Polite and generous.
C. Talented and patient.
D. Experienced and professional.
7、What does Leduc say about Shea's artwork?
A. It will inspire more kids to do art.
B. It promises a bright future for her.
C. It will attract more foreign visitors to the village.
D. It raises the villagers' awareness of environmental protection.
When you think of a jungle adventure, what comes to mind? Are they gorgeous birds flying through the air or monkeys jumping through the forest? Do you think of plants? Probably not. After all, plants aren't the most exciting living things in the world. They just sit there and absorb(吸收) water and nutrients(养分) from the soil and the sun. But actually there are also some plants that eat insects and even small animals from time to time. We call these unusual things carnivorous(食肉性) plants. Although most carnivorous plants eat small insects, large carnivorous plants in some hot and wet areas have been known to capture(捕获) rats, birds, and frogs.
One carnivorous plant many people are familiar with is the Venus flytrap. Its unique “jaws(颌)” will function when flies and other small insects touch it. Once its jaws close on its victim, it produces a chemical substance(物质) that breaks down the insect and absorbs the insect's nutrients.
There are several other examples of carnivorous plants. For example, some plants can catch insects with their leaves, which are like a tall narrow wineglass, while some trap their victims with sticky tentacles(触手). And some growing in ponds and streams absorb their victims like underwater cleaners. Carnivorous plants tend to grow in areas where the soil is very thin and lacks necessary nutrients. These plants must find other sources for the nutrients they need.
Trapping and eating insects allows these unique plants to survive. Unfortunately, human
and environmental factors continue to threaten the limited environments where you can find wild carnivorous plants.
Still for many people, the thought of a plant eating an animal seems very strange. In fact, more than one person has turned the idea into a scary story or movie. Carnivorous plants
don't pose any danger to humans, though. Unless you're the size of a tiny insect, you don't have to worry about falling prey to a Venus flytrap.
8、What can we learn about the Venus flytrap?
A. It catches insects with its unique "jaws".
B. It is a kind of poisonous plant.
C. It produces a special smell to attract insects.
D. It is the most important carnivorous plant.
9、Why do carnivorous plants hunt animals for food?
A. They need some nutrients to survive.
B.They enjoy the taste of animals.
C.They try to reduce the harmful insects.
D. They help keep the balance of nature.
10、What's the challenge faced by carnivorous plants?
A. Threats from bigger animals.
B. Limited choices of food.
C. Less concern from human beings.
D. Poorer environments to live in.
11、What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Plants that eat living things.
B. Various survival skills of plants.
C.Plants'ways of catching insects.
D. Potential dangers in the jungle.
The World Wildlife Fund states that up to 100 million sharks and rays are caught each year across the world, both on purpose in targeted fisheries and by accident, as bycatch(误捕的鱼). As a result, shark populations are in rapid decline(下降). Sharks grow relatively slowly and produce few young, so they are easily harmed or influenced by overfishing.
Robert Enever of Fishtek Marine and his team developed SharkGuard, in response to the dramatic declines in shark and ray numbers. They based it on shark deterrents(威慑物) that are currently used successfully to protect surfers and changed it to be used in tuna fisheries, where bycatch of sharks and rays is significant. The novel equipment is fixed to a hook(鱼钩) on a line, and it produces a small electric field which sharks and rays can pick up with their electroreceptors(电感受器) and this, hopefully, will keep them away from the hook.
The experiments took place off southern France, during July and August 2021. Eleven separate fishing trips were made and 18,866 hooks were used, half of which carried a
SharkGuard. The results, presented in the journal Current Biology, showed that SharkGuard hooks greatly reduced the number of blue sharks and oceanic stingrays caught, while having no big influence on the catch of Bluefin tuna.
With its effectiveness proved, there is still some way to go before fisheries could start using the equipment. Firstly, there is the limitation of the batteries(电池). Each SharkGuide needs to be changed every 65 hours of use. The developers are working to solve this problem, so users could "fit and forget" them, while still protecting sharks and other sea animals.
Now, the researchers are calling on fishers and companies experiencing high shark and ray bycatch to contact Fishtek Marine.
12、What does the author want to talk about in the first paragraph?
A. The reason sharks need protection.
B. The way sharks avoid being caught.
C. The influence sharks have on the whole world.
D. The challenge sharks face while producing young.
13、What is special about SharkGuard?
A. It can attract more sharks.
B. It was invented to protect surfers.
C. It can warn sharks of all kinds of dangers.
D. It works through creating an electric field.
14、Which word best describes the experimental results?
A.Unclear.
B. Mixed.
C. Encouraging.
D.Unsatisfying.
15、What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about SharkGuard?
A. Its price.
B. Its disadvantage.
C.Its target market.

The children had thought that hygiene(卫生) was an important part of the test. One child added that they should also remember to say "please" and "thank you." The next day all the children appeared in their best clothes. The playground was very bright that day; a
contrast(对比) that was provided with the usual black and white uniform of the school.
All the children made a line and began to go inside the building. As they went, an old washerwoman(洗衣女工) who worked at the school appeared. She had white hair and carried
an extremely heavy bag of clothes on her back. As the students passed, she asked for help. Some of them did not reply at all and some of them replied, "Sorry but we have a very important test and we cannot be late."
None helped until the washerwoman asked the last student going inside, Maria. Maria replied, "Of course, I'll help you."
Maria took the burden(重担) off the old washerwoman's back and put it onto her shoulders. She then followed the old lady to her workplace.
The path was not a smooth one. Maria accidentally (不小心) fell down and her dress became dirty. Maria was sure she would fail her test now, for she was already late and now she was not presentably(体面的) dressed either, but she put on a brave face and continued walking.

故填was decided。

短语take time to do sth.

故填to prepare。

故填a。

故填or。

My Best Friend
It’s true that everyone has his or her best friend. My best friend is Li Ping, who is a lively and easy-going girl in my class. Not only does she do well in her academic subjects, but she is also ready to help others.
Undoubtedly, what brings us together are common interests and hobbies. There are two things that we enjoy doing together: reading literary works and listening to classical music. More importantly, we share similar views on life and the world around us.
As emotional creatures, we human beings need family affection as well as friendship. Without friends, our life would be like a wild desert.
Paragraph 1:
“What happened?” she asked in surprise. The washerwoman pulled off her costume. The class was in amazement as they recognized this washerwoman as their class teacher. She told the class, “We wanted this test to be real, rather than a paper-based one. I dressed myself up as a woman in need of help and asked each of you in turn to help me.” “Ah, yes of course,” said the class in reply.
Paragraph 2:
“However, only Maria passed the test,” the teacher said. Maria understood everything after the teacher’s words. She was the only student who went out of her way and helped, not caring about how hard it would be or how dirty she would get in the process. Then the teacher honored Maria with a special medal for her excellent performance. All the children had learned a most important lesson. They now looked at every person in need as an opportunity, rather than a burden.。
