One legend tells us that it’s history can date back to as early as the Western Han Dynasty(206BC-AD25). Emperor Mingdi (明帝)advocated Buddhism（佛教）, and he heard that Buddhism monks lighted lights to show their respect to the Buddha on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. They believed that the power of Buddha can dispel darkness.(他们相信佛陀的力量 能驱散黑暗）So Emperor Mingdi ordered his subjects（臣民） to display lighted lanterns during what was to become the Lantern Festival.
