If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare",“Samuel Johnson",and “Webster”,but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English—William the Conqueror。
Before 1066,in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups。
In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos,Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English),a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted,English today would be close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last。
In 1066,the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England。
For about a century,French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants。
As a result,English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction(区别) between upper-class French and lower—class Anglo—Saxon in its words。
We even have different words for some
foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper—class Normans were doing most of the eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more “foreign” than France because the German they see on signs and adve rtisements seems much more different from English than French does。
Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’s ambition.
1The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were 。
A。
Welsh and Scottish B。
Nordic and Germanic
C.Celtic and Old English D。

A。
president,lawyer,beef B。
president,bread,water
C。
bread,field,sheep D.folk,field,cow
.A项的president, lawyer 同属English words of politics and the law,来自法语;beef 是meat at home ready to be cooked,也来自法语.

A。
Most advertisements in France appear in English.
B.They know little of the history of the English language。
C.Many French words are similar to English ones.
D。
They know French better than German.

根据文章第一段与最后一段可知,D项是正确选项.
B
If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong.Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brainpower.Researchers found that learning other languages
changes gray matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles。
The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English。
They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that gray matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was。
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn。
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingua lism and maths skills.“Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的)," he said.“You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34。
Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better。
“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
5In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise" in order to.
A.say language is also a kind of physical labour
B。
prove that one needs more practice when he/she is learning a language
C。
show the importance of using the language when you learn the language
D.make people believe language learning helps gray matter work well
作者把语言学习对大脑的促进作用比作体育锻炼对肌肉强健的促进作用,意在说明语言学习对大脑有类似的促进作用。
6The underlined word “bilinguals" probably means 。
A。
a researcher on language learning
B。
a second language learner
C。
a person who can speak two languages
D。
an active language learner
.从“early bilinguals”的定语从句“who had learnt a second language before the age of five” 可知bilingual与C项意思接近。
7We may know from the scientific findings that 。
A.the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the gray matter density is
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C。
the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain D。
the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time
.根据第五段“Scans showed that gray matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was。
”可知答案。
8The main subject talked about in this passage is 。

On February 9,2014,Kansas City resident Sarah Darling was walking along the street when she met a homeless man named Billy Ray Harris unexpectedly。
Instinctively(本能地),she reached into her change purse and emptied out all the coins she had into his collection can。
Little did either realize that this small act of generosity would change their lives forever。
It was not until the following morning that Sarah realized that not only had she given Billy all her change, but also her platinum(白金) and diamond engagement ring that she had placed in her change purse earlier. She and her husband Bill Krejci rushed to see if they could locate Billy, hoping that he would confirm her suspicion(怀疑) about where she had misplaced her precious jewelry. Not only was the homeless man in
the same spot,he also immediately returned the ring。
The grateful couple paid him back for his honesty by emptying out their pockets of all the cash they had—about $60.
However,Bill Krejci,a web designer, felt as though he needed to do something more for this amazingly honest man, especially after the story spread quickly and hundreds of people reached out to see how they could help Billy。

If that is not enough,Billy is off the streets and now living with an unnamed Samaritan(乐善好施者)。
And that’s not all. Thanks to all the media coverage,he was reunited with his older brother Edwin Harris, who he had been unable to locate for 27 years。
