One must never engage in behaviors that may cause someone to lose face, such as slurping soup, sticking out one’s chopsticks, or taking the last piece of food. These actions are considered impolite and can diminish the harmonious atmosphere of the meal.
Another crucial aspect is the arrangement of seats at the table, which signifies hierarchy and respect. The seat facing the door is usually reserved for the guest of honor, while the host often sits opposite the guest to facilitate conversation. Younger members typically sit in positions indicating their age or rank within the family structure.
When dining, one must wait for the eldest person to pick up their chopsticks before starting to eat, a subtle gesture that conveys respect for their presence and seniority. Similarly, it’s polite to take food from the serving dishes with Chopsticks only when the elder has initiated the action. This observance of seniority is a vital thread in the fabric of Chinese dining etiquette.
