13、Do you plan to study at American University ?It takes a long time to get accepted at most
American schools, perhaps as much as a year. That’s why you should start choosing a school a s soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to apply to several different schools,so that you’ll have a better chance of being accepted at one。
You should start looking for information now ,because the more information you have about each college, the better choice you can make.
There are two good ways to get information you need. One is a general reference book, called Guide to American Colleges and Universities. The other good source(来源)of information is the catalogue(目录簿)published by each school. You can study the general guide in almost any American library. This book has a lot of useful
information, such as the number of students, the average test score for people accepted to the school, and the number of books in the library. You can also find the address of each school in this book.
Although the general guidebook has helpful information, some of the facts may be out-of-date.For example, many school raise their tuition(学费)every year.Since you’ll need to know what your education will cost,out-of-date
information will not be good enough. To be sure that you are getting the latest information, write to the university and ask for its catalogue. The catalogue not only has more detailed information. For example, the catalogue can tell you what kinds of courses are offered, and what kind housing there is in the school. Some universities have places for you to live in,but at others you have to find your own place to live.

15、“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly question that people in the U.S.A use to greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong...”But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with othe r people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person say “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps t he person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more
polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking. They are trying to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
1.When a person in America asks “How are you?”, he or she wants to hear “_____”.
A.How are you? B.Hello
C.I don’t know D.Fine
2.When a person disagrees with someone, it is polite to say “_____”
A.I think you are wrong. B.I’m not sure.
C.I agree D.No, I disagree.
3.When a person says “I’ve to go now. Someone is at the door.” he or she may be _____.
A.giving an excuse B.ill
C.hurting someone’s feeling D.asking a question
4.The rule of the game of language is probably _____.
A.“Always say what you mean”
B.“Don’t disagree with others”
C.“Never ask questions ”
D.“Be polite”

18、If you are lost in the mountains, stay calm in the face of darkness, loneliness, and the unknown. It will greatly increase your chances of survival (生存). Many people think that preparing necessary equipment and knowing how to use it are very important, but actually eighty percent of mountain survival is your reaction to fear.
Find a hiding place
Unnecessary labor will make you sweat and make you cold. Find a hiding place around you before trying to start your own construction. If you are in a snow-covered area, you may be able to dig a cave in deep snow for protection from the wind. You should try to hide yourself in the middle of the mountain if possible. Stay out of the valleys-cold air falls, and the valley floor can be the coldest area on the mountain.
Signal for help
The best time to signal is during the day. Signal for help from the highest point possible-it will be easier for rescuers to see you, and any sound you make will travel farther. If you take a box of matches and a space blanket (a special blanket for traveling), build three smoky fires and put your blanket-gold side facing out on the ground.
Do not walk away
It will make finding you more difficult, as search teams will be trying to follow your path and may miss you if you have gone off in a different direction. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.
If you get frostbite (冻伤), do not rewarm the affected area until you're out of danger.
You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

19、Dear Sir,
I would like to recommend my family for “Model Family” in our neighbourhood this year. There are five people in my happy family. They are my grandparents, my parents and me.
In my family, we respect each other and take care of each other. We all work hard to make progress.
In my neighbourhood, we get along well with our neighbours. When we have problems, we are always ready to help. People here are like a big family.
What’s more, we think it is i mportant to live a green life, so we try our best to make people know the importance of protecting the environment. Now there are lots of trees and flowers around our neighbourhood. It’s really beautiful. Last but not least, my family members like to work for charity. We often volunteer to help people in need. We have sent them lots of donations.
I hope we can get the award. I am looking forward to your answer.
Yours Faithfully
Jack。
