The Pentagon wonders whether China may threaten more than Taiwan五角大楼担心中国也许比台湾更具威胁HOW big a threat is China's military build-up? Most foreign-policy makers in the administration think it represents the most significant long-term challenge to America's global security. China itself, on the other hand, finds it unconscionable that any country should regard its secretive build-up as worrying—which is odd, given that military spending, by official calculations, has been increasing at double-digit rates for much of the past decade. Both sides may breathe a temporary sigh of relief this week that the Pentagon, in a long delayed and much debated report on China's military strength, suggests that China itself has not yet decided what to do with its own growing power. China, says the report, is facing a strategic crossroads. It could choose “a pathway of peaceful integration and benign competition”. Or, it says politely, it could “emerge to exert dominant influence in an expanding sphere.” It could also become less confident and focus inwards on challenges to national unity and the Communist Party's legitimacy. “The future of a rising China is not yet set immutably on one course or another,” is the cautious conclusion. The Pentagon was due to issue the annual report earlier this year, but the State Department and other agencies reportedly worried that some of its language was too blunt. The administration faces difficult negotiations over North Korea's nuclear programme, in which China is playing a central role. Congress is in a protectionist lather about China's fixed exchange-rate regime and the country's bids to buy two of America's best-known companies, Unocal and Maytag (see article). A bill before the House of Representatives would allow countervailing duties to be slapped on Chinese goods. Preoccupied as America is with security issues elsewhere, a spat over China's perceived military ambitions was the last thing the administration wanted.

Parents in America don't need to worry about young families when they get marry.Once a child reaches the adulthood , he has to move out and lived on his own . In China ,it’s very common that children live with their parents. This happened even after 2 they get married or have their own baby. It’s hard to say which way is better, because Americans are independent in a early age but Chinese have stronger family tie.

Differences in customs between American and Chinese
With the development of the world, cross-cultural communication grows to be a necessity in everyone’s life. As we know, the definition of culture is that “it is the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning.” Chinese and Americans are born to different cultures and they are different in many aspects, so cultural differences are the hinder of the cross-cultural communication and how to clear away the obstacle has become the problem that the world has to face.First, I want to speak of the differences about diet customs. In America, you can’t talk at an excessively loud volume which is regarded as a bad manner. At the same time, eating is regarded as a way of communication and a necessary survival means. On the contrast, many issues are solved at table. Liu Yutang, a famous anthropological scholar, once said:” The diet concepts of people from English countries are different from those of Chinese. They think that eating is just an act giving your body nutrients, like injecting fuel to a machine, to ensure its normal operation. Therefore, in the minds of the Western people eating just a life-susaining role in their life. We can see clearly that American people would not assign more important missions to eating, which have been down by the Chinese people for a long time.” Just as it implies, we can find thedifferent attitudes on eating between Americans and Chinese.Next, the differences in communicating customs are also apparent. In China, you get used in standing closely to people who you’re talking to in chatting. Nevertheless, if you do like this in America, people who you’re talking with will not be at ease. He will think you’re impolite. Besides, it’s a bad manners to ask people’s name the first time you meet him which makes he think your behavior is invasion of privacy. What’s more, Americans prefer to frame theirselves with body languages so as to present their minds powerfully. What you must learn are some fundamental gestures if you want to carry on a fluently conversation. By contraries, Chinese are fond of standing closely to people in order to present kindness. There are also many other differences in customs. For an instance, people are very informal in social situations in America. For example, they call each other by given names when they meet for the first time, including the young to the old. In China, however, this will be regarded as quite impolite. Besides, it’s quite all right to ask a Chinese the cost of his possessions while it’s quite rude to do in America.Only if we have a good knowledge of differences in customs between America and China can we avoid many misunderstandings and get on well with each other.。

The illustration of dating would mainly contain two parts: the actions and the thoughts and the cultural reasons and revelation will be analyzed finally.Outline:1. Introduction2. Comparison between Chinese and American dating2. 1 Similarities2. 2 Differences2.2.1Behaviours2.2.2Activities2.2.3Purpose and Attitude3.Reasons for different behaviors and attitudes between China and America3.1 religious and traditional values3.2 relationship with marriage3.3 expressing ways4.Revelation5. ConclusionReference1.IntroductionAs start point of the path towards marriage, the function and meaning of dating is obviously very important. Accordingly, if we want to have a better and comprehensive understanding of the different views on marriage between American and Chinese, it is necessary to analyze the difference in dating customs between people from the two countries. As we know, dating includes all the activities that men and women do together for having a better understanding of each other and developing a further relationship. Taken in this sense, it is the same for every one over the world. However, due to the great difference between American and Chinese in culture, tradition and belief, people in America and those in China have different customs in dating.Considering the above, I'd like to illustrate the topic in two main aspects: the behaviors and the thoughts. That just match along with human's body and soul. The actions of body will be demonstrated by the behaviors and the activities ,while the souls will be elaborated by the purpose and attitude. Thus ,we shall understand both cultures and manage the dating in our life in a better way.parison between Chinese and American dating2. 1 SimilaritiesAs a critical step for two people's relationship, dating is a way for them to get a better understanding of each other. People are always changing and growing. They have a date aiming to have a further relationship with the other. Also, dating relates to all the romantic things and lovely memories.Inevitably, sometimes couples may quarrel and even break up when they are dating. So all dates show this character: uncertainty. The affair develops unpredictable as it depends on the feelings of two people. In addition, festivals celebrating the love exist in both countries. Chinese have the Tanabata Day and Americans have the Valentine's Day. People date on the special day to show their love to their half apples.2. 2 DifferencesDifferences are reflected by the actions of body and rooted in their souls. The actions of body will be demonstrated by the behaviors and the activities ,while the souls will be elaborated by the purpose and attitude.2.2.1BehavioursThe behaviors varies in the two countries. So here, three typically specific cases will be illustrated to explain it.Firstly, how many dates shall a single have?In America, it is normal for people to have a date with different persons of the opposite sex in a period. But it is hard to imagine that this scene will appear in China.Plato once said ,"Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful." This has become a widely accepted western thought. So in Americans' opinion, only by coming into contact with many persons who have different character, different hobbies and different backgrounds, she or he can get the man or woman who is the most suitable one. Most of Chinese people agree with that viewpoint, but they still have a date with only one person in a period, following their customs and traditions. For Chinese, dating with only one person shows their sincerity and respect to each other. This custom relates to Chinese traditional culture, whichemphasizes the respect to others. It will provoke criticism in China if one dates with different men or women in the same period. However, as above, it is normal in America.Secondly, who is more active when dating?Emphasizing punctuality, most American will arrive the appointed place on time. The woman may call or directly invite the man if she has a good feeling for him. Women are as active as men.On the contrary, Chinese women are too shy to do that. They prefer to show the missish appearance ,never being too active. Sometimes they are allowed to be a little late for the dating and the men seldom get angry for that. So relatively, men are more active.Thirdly, whose treat?Lovers usually have dinner and other entertainments together. Americans tend to go Dutch when they have a date. On one hand, it reflects the independence which is a part of Americans' characters. On the other hand, it also depend on their view and attitude towards dating. Since the dating is just a kind of social activities, they certainly do as well as daily. And in America, women don't want special treatment, going Dutch is a good way to avoid offence. It's obvious that Chinese people hold different opinions. Under the influence of Chinese traditional culture, people in China, especially men, tend to pay for the bills after dating. By this action, men want to show their good manners and respect to women. Different from American women, Chinese women don't regard this action as peculiarity and most of them think it as deserved. They even appreciate this action called male chauvinism.2.2.2ActivitiesSince the dating is a common way of social activities, it leads to a inside world of a person .Americans behave relaxingly.Their conversation and activities base on their mutual hobbies. A party is an excellent and common occasion for dating. In the party, they can dance, talk , making less embarrassed feelings. Here are more activities can make the same effects.Watching a popular game like Baseball Bugs or American Football game together can be a good choice for these sports fans. Many American couples also do sports together. Quiet ones may choose to watch an opera or a concert in their free time. Once they have the same hobbies, they can get closer more easily. It is different in China. Due to the close relevance to marriage, most people are serious towards their dating. Chinese choose decent restaurants or clubs. On dating, man and woman try to show their good manners and behave overcautiously. They talk about themselves in brief and ask some basic questions about each other's job, family, incomes and so on. So is the first dating. A park or a movie theater is the routine place for dating in China. Shy Chinese ones tend to talk about some individual things, thus leading to a slower progress of the relationship. Americans may have sex with the dates regardless of their dating times. It's obviously that few Chinese think of that at the beginning .Chinese always try to get all the aspects of a person and make a decision through only one short date. It's not much reasonable. Compared with Americans' dating, Chinese people are too cautious to cover their nature and it is hard to know each other well by dating. So, maybe it is easier for Americans to show their characters and have a understanding of each other by this way.2.2.3Purpose and AttitudeThe purpose and attitude are linked to people's souls or, in other words, their thoughts. The purpose of dating of Americans seems pure. As Plato said," Don't try so hard, the best things come when you least expect them to."For American, dating does not have close connection with marriage. The man and woman will develop friendship rather than love relationship. It is a long time before they establish the formal love relationship even if some of them already have sex. Usually, thedating makes no fruits or convert into a social activity. In short, Americans enjoy dating and seldom hurry to draw a final conclusion to a relationship.Traditionally,Chinese people tend to find a suitable mate by dating, which makes a close connection with marriage. Mao Zedong, the hero for Chinese ,once said,"One who don't take marry as the goal love is playing the hoodlum."So as we can see, they often base their prospective marriage on the dates. Often, Chinese would be compelled to date if he or she is still single when he or she approaches about 30. So, dating is important for Chinese, especially the singles. In a sense, Americans regard dating as a kind of entertainment or a way to show themselves and make friends. In China, with its five-thousand-year history, traditional culture affects people deeply. Chinese people think of the dating as a way to marriage. So ,they treat it seriously and pay more attention to their manners.3.reasons for different behaviors and attitudes between China and America3.1 religious and traditional valuesFirst and foremost, the values of two different cultures result the discrimination. The value of personal freedom and independence has a great influence on the dating behaviors and attitudes in America. They believe that love affairs should not bounded with some irrelevant things. The nationalities ,the ages ,the status ,the money ,the appearance--every thing can be ignored as long as love exists. In China, the long history and the civilization leave people the conception to be honest to others and conservative themselves. So dating with different people in one period must be criticized and estranged. At the same time ,if females are too active, they may leave the public some bad impressions.3.2 relationship with marriageSecondly, the relationship between dating and marriage makes a big difference. For Americans, marriage is a completely personal matter. Everyone has his freedom to choose his marriage and is not influenced by the society and others. So for their future happiness, they will try their best to find a man or woman who is the most suitable by dating with different people. In this sense, the custom is not obscure. With the influence of the traditional culture, marriage, for Chinese, is not a personal business. For thousands of years, Chinese insist a opinion well-matching in social and economic status, which is a contradiction to the Americans' opinion. It is a complex made up by the society, families and traditional beliefs, such as the Confucianism. So people have to try another way to find their love which is not against their traditions. They will start a new date until the former ends. Women are educated to be reserved and elegant, while men are taught to act gentle in front of women.3.3 expressing waysThe last reason for the existent differences is the entirely different expressing ways. Usually, Americans mostly have the low-context communication , they like to express themselves in an explicit way. They seldom give an ambiguous answer to the other. So after several times of dating ,they would show their attitude clearly: friend or lover. Oppositely in China, people tend to talk in a high-context way. The implicit expressions often make people confused about the attitude of the other. So the dating may last a long time with no actually progress.4.revelationNowadays, people are no longer limited to date in a stubborn pattern because of the cultural penetration. They appreciate new ways and emphasize unique feelings or things no matter in China or in America. Of course in China, dating with various persons in one period may bring some pressure tothe one, but it's worth trying. Regardless of the gender, people should be brave and active to persue their true love. As the saying goes , love is boundless. So whatever people do is reasonable in this case. For Americans, sometimes dating may become a game, a thoughtless thing. After all, dating has great influence in everyone's life. People may as well think it over when they make any decisions. In this high-speed developing and changeable era, dating in a free way and be harmonious with one-selves living environment may be a better choice. Last but not least ,wherever and whoever you are dating , keep your own value!5. ConclusionVarious discriminations exist in Chinese and American dating, rooted in their own culture. Chinese way of dating is the product of the traditional Confucianism and other Conservative thoughts, while American way of dating is the product of mixed values and the free and individual thoughts affected by the religions and other factors. Both dating ways have their virtues and their faults. The ways not only reflect certain aspects of their people's value but also bring people different means of happiness. A comparison of Chinese and American dating can not only help students realize the marvelous world but also lead them to a mature thought that they should cope with their individual problems in a correct way.Love ,in a way that you love. Date in a way that you enjoy yourself. Anyway ,it's the most wonderful thing in the world.ReferenceSymposium.Plato.Hertfordshire:Wordsworth Editions Ltd,1998.The Rules (TM) Dating Journal.Ellen Fein, Sherrie Schneider.New York:Grand Central Publishing, 1997.

China is a country that has a long history,in the long period cultural accumulation, the traditional culture with Chinese characteristics came into being。
Although the United S tates don’t have such a long history,American culture has become one of the mainstream culture in the world。
Today we’ll Compare the similarities and differences between Chinese and American cultures from three aspects:religion, education and food。
In this way,we can improve our ability of cross-culture communication。
Key words:China,America, similarities, differences, education, religion, food Differences between the Chinese and American culturesAs we know ,there are many differences between Chinese and American cultures. If we desire to learn about U.S or communicate with Americans in proper way ,it is necessary for us to know about cross-cultural communication. Cross-cultural communication (also referred to as intercultural communication) is a field of study that focus on how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves, and how they endeavor to communicate across cultures. Only if we are familiar with the similarities and differences can we avoid cultural conflicts and get along well with foreign friends. When you are conc erned about what you can do and what you can’t, your foreign friends will show respect for your national culture and there is no doubt that you can enhance the level of cross-culture communication .In the essay,I’ll talk about similarities and differences in three aspects between Chinese and American culture :religion ,food and festival.1.religionAmerica is remarkable now, as in the past, for its attachment to the principle of freedom of belief or disbelief . –The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States indicates that "Congress shall make no law establishing religion, orprohibit the free exercise thereof."So you can choose your indivisual relision.According to the research, The largest religion in the US is Christianity, practiced by the majority of the population (76% in 2008);Speaking in general terms, the contemporary American is a Christian country. A research indicates that most Americans believe the existence of Santa Clous, Christ Jesus and angel even after they have received edu cation and become adults. It’s easy to see the ingrained status of Christianity in the United States of America. Christianity has the idea that people have original sin, because human ancestors, Adam and eva had sinned, corrupt moral invaded their body, and transmitted to their descendants, the result is that all mankind have sin. Obviously, Christianity preached that man and God, the separation of man and nature. China is a multi-religious country, and Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Christian are the main religions in the country. Incomplete statistics show that there are more than 100 million religious followers in China with over 85 000 religious sites, over 3000 religious groups and some 74 religious colleges. Chinese people also enjoy the freedom of religious belief according to law, and regular religious activities are protected by the Constitution. All religious believers and non-religious people in the country respect for each other in beliefs and customs and live together in harmonies. While Chinese religion would emphasize that the harmony between man and nature, issues of life within a confined themselves, to solve problems with people- oriented. It’s quite different from the Christianity.2.foodGenerally speaking, we Chinese think food is very important to man. People often associate food with important holidays and the chance to meet distinguished guests. The Chinese food not only is very delicious and tasty but also very pleasing to your senses and many of dishes have very beautiful and fancy names. The Chinese have the food culture of our own which are quite different from westerners. In the west, people pay more attention to the nutrition of food rather than the looks of it. The cuisine and table manners are quite different from ours in a great extent. It is a very common practice we Chinese people say "Have you had your meal?" when they meeteach other around the time before or after meals. In fact, it is a kind of greeting to communicate with each other. But foreigners cannot understand that because they think why you ask me this. They tend to think you want to invite me to dinner or I am not rich enough to feed myself regularly but that is my business not yours. Chinese think food is very important and essential to people so it shows some care and concern about you. Very often it puzzles foreigners a lot that we ask and talk so much when we order our food in the restaurant. One reason is we ask what the food or the dish is and try to clarify it because you sometimes never know what the food is just according the name of the food until it is put on your table in the restaurant just. While most of western food has a simple and clear name and you know what it is when you hear the name. For instance, there is a traditional food call "fish and chips" in the UK. You see it is very obvious it is fried fish and potato chips. The reason for this in China is on the one hand to try to tell you the way it cooks such as cook, fry, grill and broil in the name and on the other it has beautiful good names so that you have a good imagination and association to let you have a good appetite.Generally speaking, we don't use much tableware when we have our meal in China. Mainly we have bowl, dishes, chopsticks and spoons, which we don't use very often. In serving English meals, they use so much tableware with different kinds and sizes. The Chinese do not know how to use them properly when they are invited to dinner in English family. For example there are different kinds of names for glasses in English, such as wine glass, cherry glass, brandy glass, beer glass, snifter glass, champion flute and high bowl. You can see tableware also show the food culture of different countries.cationUs’s higher education was considered as the best education in the world. Comparing the elementary education between American and China, people's universal view will be: China's elementary education aims to build the foundation of education with more study and less thought; while US's education aims to bulid such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more thought. the Chinesestudents study more, actually pay little attention to the practice, and cannot study for the purpose of 's education pays more attention to raise student's self-confidence,independence,spirit of supporting oneself, but China's education emphases on training the students to be strict, rigorous spiritual. When American school inspects the result of student, they emphasize more on the ability to analyze and solve the question but not the ability of memory or description. The American students donot need the mechanical memorizing, but display creative thought as far as possible; This can cultivate student's study interest, raise the ability of doing it byself and make the study be one kind of creative action. Conclusion:Chinese culure is broad and profound, but American culture also has its unique and style. After learning this class,I have a general impression on American culture, there are quite differences between Chinese and American culture.I think that it’s beneficial to be familiar to this differences for our cross-cultual communication.References[1]Luther S.Luedtke<The Society and Culture of the United States>America:United States information Agency,2003[2]托马斯﹒里克纳《美式家庭——品质教育家长对策》海南:海南出版社,2001年(2)[3]章创生《美国爸爸中国爸爸——向美国家长学教子》重庆:重庆出版社,2011(6)[4]董小川《美国文化概论》.

A comparative study of American and Chinese negotiation
For the Chinese negotiators, authority rests with the group and decision-making occurs through consensus. For the American negotiators, the negotiating team with a supreme leader has complete authority to decide all matters.
Chinese people have a strong orientation towards the past, which has refrained Chinese negotiators from taking risks. As a result of low risk-avoiders, Americans, however, are generally more comfortable with ambiguous uncertain situations and are more accepting of risk.
Generally, Chinese negotiators prefer an implicit, broad contract in the form of general principles, expressing mutual cooperation and trust between the concerned parties. American negotiators prefer an explicit, detailed, written contract that attempt to anticipate all possible circumstances.
american dating
American dating history American dating culture has a long, storied history that is closely related to the history of marriage in America. The first American dating traditions were brought to the continent from the countries of the immigrants origins who came ashore here. Because of this, America's dating culture has become a conglomeration of cultures, customs, traditions, and evolving expectations with the only predictable element remaining 'change.'American Dating Before 1900∙When the Puritans set up camp in North America, they also established rigorous religious moral expectations. These expectations encompassed all aspects of life, including courtship and marriage. Marriage between a man and a woman was not seen as an emotional connection, but a business deal, where a man broughtwealth and security to his wife, and a woman brought a dowry and the ability to bear children. Negotiations between parents took place that took intoconsideration monetary wealth and social status, with little input from themarriageable parties. In the 1700s, a couple's union was still staunchly guarded by parents, butbeginning in the 1800s, young men and women began to have more autonomy in their choices for a mate. Love became a larger concern in a pairing, with letters and courtship shared between lovers considering marriage with each other.American Dating Before 1960∙In the 1920s, with dancing growing as a social activity, youth able to spend time together without their parents, and the growth in popularity and availability of the automobile, American courtship began to see a drastic change. Lovers had the opportunity to spend time alone with other singles their own age, and could go on dates with multiple people until they found someone to see exclusively.Exclusive couples often shared letter jackets and rings with the expectation that the relationship would lead to marriage. As couples began to date younger, starting in junior high and high school, the age of marriage dropped to the late teens and early twenties, with many couples marrying before a husband, or ahusband and wife, began university studies. After WWII, there was a flood ofmarriages as service men returned from overseas and quickly found sweethearts, new or old, and proposed.American Dating & Feminism∙The wave of feminism in the 1960s began to change the face of American dating culture drastically. Prior to the feminist movement, women and men who did not get married could be viewed as pitiable, or possibly flawed, prompting men and women to date and marry quickly. As women began to skirt traditional roles of housewifery in favor of college, employment, and independent living, dating became prolonged and marriage delayed. Sexual freedom also gained prominence, with traditional dating traded for shorter, casual encounters.Modern American Dating∙Modern American dating is a product of the precedents set by the past. With many different religious traditions, personal ethics, and other guiding principles shaping the way different subsets of American date, there is not one way to sum up modern dating culture. Sexual promiscuity has remained prominent, as well as problem for many girls, specifically teenagers, who find themselves pregnant and in a difficult position to support themselves and their child.Conservative religious groups have risen partly as a backlash to these trends, stressing abstinence and prolonged courtship strictly intended for marriage. The majority of American couples have abandoned the full dating of rigors, favoring instead to date members of their group of friends, engaging in short dates over coffee or drinks, as opposed to previous traditions of long, evening dinner dates.Dating in the Digital Age∙The digital age of dating has ushered in dating websites, matchmaking tools, and personality assessments to help couples find each other in an era that often lends itself to feelings of disconnect and isolation. While many people, especiallywomen, will act ashamed of having met a date on the Internet through an online dating service, the rapid growth of dating websites demonstrates that they are in high demand, whether or not people are willing to talk about it in public. Digital dating allows singles to read profiles, view pictures, and compare personalitytraits before deciding if they'd like to talk with someone or meet them. Whether or not these sights will lead to an increase in successful dates, and subsequently marriages, remains to be studied.Read more:American Dating Culture | /about_6663026_american-dating-culture.html#ixzz2AU4DvJYADating Customs in the USABy Cynthia Gomez, eHow ContributorA date in the United States is an opportunity to connect. While much of the western world may have similar customs when it comes to dating, U.S. dating customs may be completely foreign to people from other parts of the world. It's completely acceptable for either the man or woman to do the asking. There are dozens of ethnic groups, each with their own dialect, spreadthroughout the different regions of the United States. Despite descending from acountry so massive, people with Chinese heritage still share a common culture and value system that rings true with many other Asian cultures. The importance of family, honor, and hard work are reflected in all aspects of life, including romanticrelationships and dating. As a first generation Chinese American, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, a major hub for multitudes of Asians and Asian Americans. I had always understood certain facets of everyday life as norms since most of my peers were like me and grew up in households like mine. I never attributed tenets as simple as honoring andrespecting elders, especially parents, to my ethnic upbringing. The Parental InfluenceLike many Chinese parents, mine only expected the best – the best grades, the best schools, the best jobs, and the best husband who shared those same qualities. As such,I always feared the chance of disapproval when my love interests deviated from thatof dating the ideal Chinese doctor. Even after trying to ignore parental pressure and their sometimes unreasonable requirements, many of these qualifications are stillingrained in me and my generation alike. Just like my parents, financial stability and arespectable career are basic prerequisites that seem to unconsciously take precedence over many other traits in younger generations.StereotypesParental concerns aren’t the only factors that influence relationships, but stereotypes brought on by the American media also fall into play. As an Asian American woman, sometimes I too fall into the trap of labeling Asian men as passive. On the other hand, some men might wishfully believe that Asian women are submissive and will cater to their every need and want. These are all blatant generalizations, and these social biases are often untrue. As a strong-minded Asian American woman, I embody characteristics that are quite the opposite of the submissive stereotype, and know many Asian men who break the boundaries of their misconstrued identity as well. Over time, I have learned that the best approach is to shed those misconceptions and instead focus on the person in front of me.Chinese DatingIn any kind of culture, commonality often makes dating easier. Sharing in traditions, food, and basic upbringing and values can decrease points of conflict that may otherwise arise. Dating another Chinese American would be familiar – not just to myself, but for both families. There are many levels of language barriers in the Chinese community, where many first generation Chinese Americans have parents who speak little to no English at all. Where family is of utmost importance, finding someone who can communicate with them is a huge factor to consider in the dating world.Interracial DatingAlthough dating a nice Chinese doctor may be at the top of my parents’ wishes, dating people from other cultures and backgrounds is not out of the realm of possibility.Respect and honor of the Chinese culture might have to be learned, but the same goes for the other person’s heritage. Certain foods or traditions might need some easing into, such as becoming accustomed to chicken feet on the table during Sunday morning dim sum, or politely arguing over who will pay the bill. With mutual appreciation, understanding, and a little patience, these are obstacles that both parties can benefit from, whether or not the relationship works out. There are many Chinese parents out there that may be hesitant about the unfamiliar, but with an open heart and an open mind, what is different can be embraced and ultimately turn out to be a great experience.Chinese Dating EtiquetteBy Marisa Swanson, eHow ContributorDating etiquette in China is very different from that in America.Dating etiquette differs vastly amongst different cultures. Not observing the etiquette of another country can produce negative results in the form of embarrassment or accidentally offending someone. In American culture, being open about feelings and sex and controversial ideas is prized and respected.Expressing these beliefs is part of acceptable etiquette when two people are dating and getting to know one another. In China, where modesty is part of the culture, these and other practices are not considered desirable.Casual Datingo Casual or serial dating, which is going out with several people at one time, is virtually unheard of in China and is not practiced. Younger Chinese are starting to experiment with casual dating, but it has not yet become acceptable mainstream practice. It's important for American men to know that taking a Chinese woman out on a second or third date will indicate that you are interested in an exclusive and serious relationship. The woman might even get the impression that you are interested in marriage.Vocabularyo In American dating, individuals will often tell those they are dating that they like them, and specifically what they like about them. It is not uncommon for them to say they've missed the other one. In no way is this an indication of therelationship being serious. However, for the Chinese, these terms have far greater meaning. When a Chinese girl says she misses or likes you, she is serious. And when she shows you physical affection, she could very well have chosen you for a spouse.Meeting the Parentso Americans often introduce girlfriends and boyfriends to their parents, regardless of the seriousness of the relationship. Both parents and kids take it for granted that the significant other could be "the one" but is not necessarily. At times aboyfriend or girlfriend is introduced to move the relationship forward, on the contingency of the parents approving. But in Chinese culture meeting the parents means that the relationship is locked down into permanency for the couple. In China, meeting the parents can be the equivalent of an engagementannouncement.Sex Communicationo Americans consider themselves very liberal when it comes to sex. Each generation is more outspoken and liberal than the last, it seems. Talking about sex isconsidered the modern, healthy way to conduct a relationship. In China talking about sex is considered vulgar and inappropriate. In fact, sex education doesn't exist in China because of this taboo.Virginityo While notions of virginity being maintained until marriage have largely been tossed aside in American culture, they are still quite prevalent in Chinese culture. If you have sex with a Chinese woman, and especially if you take her virginity, that is an indication of the relationship being very serious and moving toward marriage.

已经到了in a relationship的层面。
而美国人会问:“Are you dating someone?”
On Differences of the Marriage Concept betweenChinese and AmericanIntroductionTraced back to primitive society, there is the so-called marriage. It is the law of nature that opposites attract makes the mammals live and multiply. Therefore, marriage is a normal and necessary social phenomenon. Because of the different social environment, the human concept of marriage and the mode of combination are also different. The culture of China and America is different, especially the concept of marriage. The United States is a cross-cultural social group and it is composed of many cultural groups of society. The Americans’ mentality are characterized by freedom love, independent and the fondness of exploring, adventuring and enterprising; While we Chinese mentality mainly is a kind of care and the consciousness of compassion. It is based on the two different points of view that people's understanding of marriage is different. About the marriage, someone vividly metaphor: "for the Chinese, marriage is more like a commercial activity, so called management marriage; for Americans, marriage is more like playing house, full of freedom. So there are much differences of marriage concept between China and America.Chapter One the Differences Reflected in the Marriage Concept Between Chinese and American Ancient and modern, the human natures are the same; they all have desires, joys, sorrows and the psychology of love and hate. But due to the differences of geographical environment, historical background, development process and other aspects, each nation and has itsfeatures. The differences may reflect in many aspects, such as the ways of choosing mates, wedding ceremony and so on.1.1 the Ways of Choosing Mates1.1.1 the Chinese Way of Choosing MatesSince ancient times, “be matched for marriage” is the ways of choosing mates in China, which means both sides are well-matched in social and economic status. The idea is so ingrained in China. Although, since the reform and opening, with the development of economy and the deepening of the communication between Chinese and western culture, the younger generation is no longer subject to the constraints of China's traditional thought and they are freedom to choose their mates, most of people can not get rid of the constraint of society and family. If free love to choose the mates, first of all, they must be approved by their parents. If there is big disparity between two family conditions, paren ts will not agree. If the man’s family condition is poor, her parents will never agree too. As a popular saying “The economic base determines the superstructure”. Only well material base can provide a stable life. No matter in rural or city, getting married is a large expense. As we all know, nowadays people are getting more and more reality. House is the precondition. If one man has house and car, he must be admired by many people. Before long, there is a hot debate in micro blog, which talks about how much it spends when a man gets married. The result shows it is very common that men married a daughter-in-law can spend hundreds of thousands. In a famous dating show, "if you are the one”, one female guest said, "she would rather cry in a BMW, than smile on the bicycle”. According to the internet, it reflects the current state of mind of many women. The TV plays series “The naked marriage age" reflects the reality of modern marriage: firstly, to get parents recognition; secondly, arrangement of pregnant plan; thirdly, solving financial difficulties. Besides, refusing the lure of the outside city and achieving the unity on the concept of life. This is all sorts of problems after 80s.1.1.2 the American Way of Choosing MatesThe freedom to choose mates is the dominant concept in America. Because Americans have the characteristic of personalities. For love and mating, young Americans are completely based on their fondness. In America, men and women who in love care more about whether they are suitable, namely whether are fit in characters. They do not care about each other's family background, education level, and even religion. Parents will not interfere with their children but give their blessing. Marriage-seeking ad often can be seen in newspapers and magazines that, Chinese men list their accomplishments: degree, occupation, economic status, and so on. While American men list is their hobbies and characteristics. Because the American is looking for a partner, one that has similar tastes and interests, one that have mutual affinity. Americans do not care much about other's appearance, stature and age. A beautiful Chinese woman was marry to an American, she jokingly asked her husband if he felt a little proud when took her out to meet his friends, he asks why, when he was told the reason, he became more puzzled. He said that I marry you not because what you are so call "good condition", but feel that we share common interest and pursue a similar life. He also said certainly that you are beautiful, but why others envyme? This reflects the American way of choosing matesaccording to ones disposition and hobby, without caring too much about each other's family background, appearance and economic conditions.1.2 the Attitude Toward Marriage1.2.1 the Chinese Attitude Toward MarriageOne of the main reasons resulted in different way of choosing mates between Chinese and American is that they have significant difference on their attitude toward marriage. Chinese people pay attention to interpersonal relation of interdependence, marriage is absolutely not the simple combination of two individuals. Parents help their sons to marry daughter-in-law, which superficially hope that his son can soon organize his own family, but actually it is for the whole family. In the ancient times, marriage is an important event among families. Even the relatives of many generations would be involved in. Undoubtedly , the newly married couple would worship the ancestors as soon as they enter in the family. Recently, a popular topic "the feeling of happiness”, although most people living standards have improved, the feeling of happiness fell instead. Marriage directly affect the feeling of happiness. Chinese people treat marriage like a Chinese man for a woman; they have no equal point of view. According to a sample survey of the Tianjin women's federation, 81.7% of people treat the children as an important factor to maintain marriage. From that, we can definitely say that the marriage of Chinese people is for others, as the marriage is mainly for carrying on ancestral line, serving for the old, which is seen as the obligation and responsibility of the family. Besides, Chinese women are the most patience women in the world. The thinking of “Marriage woman likes the water which is puling out.” They t hink after marriage theyalready an individual; and need to solve her problem by her self. Chinese people have better tolerance is also because they love to pin their desire toachieve in the next generation. Having this hope, to bear an unhappy relationship in a marriage, is not a big deal any more.Of course, with the development of the society, more and more people, especially young people gradually get rid of the bondage of some traditional concepts. They no longer simply think that marriage is just for carrying on ancestral line. For them, marriage is not only a kind of family obl igation but the personal right. What’s more, as a member of society, they have the inexorable right to be responsible for their own life and future.1.2.2 the Americans Attitude Towards MarriageAmerica is a young country, which consists of many parts of the world and many immigrants. Until now there is still a large number of immigrants enter the country every year. They have a strong personal struggle and competitive consciousness. The diversity of American culture and social environment make many people to accept such life creed: Every man for himself and God for us all; every man is the architect of his own fortune. They think marriage is a combination of two individuals, as long as both sides reach the legal age to married, the third party has no rights to intervene. Americans are independent and reality, very few people marry for forming a f amily. In American’s character, equality plays a significant role. The realization of being equality is deep in every American’s heart. Compared with Chinese people, they have less ability to tolerate the partner. They never oppress their affection. They know it very clear that as an individual, they have rights to gain equality, even in spiritual or marital. They think more highly of the romance in marriage, theyhave higher expectation of the quality of their life. They would not to bear in marriage. The main purpose is to find a lasting heterosexual life partner, so that they can satisfy themselves in physical, psychological and social communication. So they must choose a congenial people. They consider that marriage is one of their individual rights but not the obligation; it is a kind of form rather than a responsibility. When asked what is thepurpose of marriage, three-quarters of Americans said that it is the "mutual happiness and fulfillment" of adults rather than "birth and raising children”. They t hink that love is the guarantee to maintain a lasting marriage.1.3 the Wedding Ceremony1.3.1 Jollification - Chinese WeddingTraditional Chinese weddings are always filled with red things to bring auspicious blessings and respects. And even wedding customs reflect traditions from Chinese philosophy. The Chinese regard the color red as the symbol of happiness, success, luck, faith and growth. They like red very much, which comes from worship of the Sun. In traditional Chinese weddings, there are double Xi characters in red, red scarves, red flowers and the bride wears a red coat. The wedding ceremony shows harmony between nature and people. A marriage is not only a merger of the couple; traditionally, it symbolizes the merger of two families. So the wedding ceremony should reflect the holiness of marriage, drawing the attention of relatives and friends. There is harmony between nature and the people inside. Inviting relatives and friends to the wedding symbolizes the formality and the relationships between people. During a marriage, two families become in-laws. The ceremony reflects the importance and family status of the parents. After the ceremony, the bride andthe groom usually burn money and food as offerings to the gods. As the fire consumes the offerings accompanied by the sound of firecrackers, god accepts the gift, indicating that there is harmony between nature and people. The sound of musical instruments in the wedding is usually loud to express the voice of the people. The sound should be loud enough to let nature know, and it also demonstrates the importance of the marriage. The food the bride eats has cultural significance in traditional weddings; the bride usually has red dates, peanuts, longans and melon seeds. The meaning is evident in theChinese pronunciation of these four foods. When they are said together, it sounds like "Have a baby soon."1.3.2 Solemn – American Wedding CeremonyIt all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor. As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants standwith the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health." Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.1.4 the Attitude Toward Divorce1.4.1 Chinese Attitude Toward DivorceWith the development of economy, more and more people have found their position in society and they have their own career. As a result of the social competition pressure, the time of communication between the couples seem to be less and less. Day after day they are alienated. Besides, under the influence of western culture, ultimately, they go their separate ways unavoidably. Thus the divorce rate is on the rise. But for Chinese people, once they are married, they will go through the hard time together and their love will be everlasting. China is a humane society, and where humanness there is warmth. Apart from working, people can make an appointment with two or three of their friends to the teahouse or cafe, chatting and drinking, how happy and emotional appeal they are. When having happy things, they happy together. Instead, when having unhappy things they concern and care for each other. This relationship, even if nottogether is mutual induction. In Chinese society, the interpersonal communication is unobstructed, thus couple quarreled caused by emotional stress can easily relax from other interpersonal communication. Such as when couples quarrelling, the wife can go back her parent’s home, resting for a day or two, or to find a good friend pouring out their feelings. The husband can chat with friends in the tea house. Over a period of time, they go back to home. The couples are easy to reconciliation. Even though they do not restore to the previous state, under the pressure of the society, they are ashamed to divorce.1.4.2 American Attitude Toward DivorceAs is known to all, the United States is a country of high divorce rate. We can often hear the reports about some public figures for the second time, even for the third time dressed in a wedding dress going into the church. Why Americans are so casual toward divorce? Why appear this kind of social phenomenon? From the analysis, we know that the American mentality belongs to a “wonder” type: inquiry, creative, and progress. Amer ica isa multicultural country, Americans advocate personal freedom and self-reliance. Personal major problem do not rely on the help of relatives and friends, but directly depend on the government. As a result of the American social system, the interpersonal do not depend on each other so much, so, the emotional communication between people is reduced to a minimum. But marriage is a kind of emotional life, which, quarrels or arguments are inevitable. In the United States, the emotional communication between people is more limited, marital conflict is not easy to get guidance. When accumulating over a long period, it easily causes a rift and emotional trauma. According tothe latest statistics show that about 60% of all marriages end in divorce in the United States. Only 20% of the second or third married couples will be happy. 80% married again and again, which ends in divorce. More than one million children saw their parents' divorce every year. Among babies that born this year, half of the parents will divorce before their children 18 years old. Although divorce is very necessary, but the high divorce rate reflects the certain social issues.Chapter Two the Origin of the Difference The social system of China and America is different, thus it is inevitable that there are different concept of marriage. However everything has its origins. There are many causes of the different marriage concept between China and America. Such as historical background, economic development, religious beliefs, social values and so on.2.1 the Comparison of Historical OriginChina is a nation with 5000 years history, the feudal society last for twenty-three thousand years. The traditional Confucian culture has deep influence on ancient marriage and family. Under the influe nce of Confucian culture’s thought of "grand unification", the fusion of two families is not simply a couple combination, but the process of the whole family participate in. In ancient times, men do farm work while women engage in weaving. These ethical ideas have been influencing until today. "The parents arranged for their children’s marriage" is the way of choosing mates that lasts for thousands of years.America is a young county consists of many different immigrants coming from all over the world; it is a newly developed federal republic country only with two hundred years of history. It’s characterized by multi-ethnic, multi-culture, relative open economic and cultural degree, democracy andfreedom. Since the establishments of American, this kind of concept have been penetrated into the minds of Americans, such as, dependence, equality, fraternity, the personal achievement and material wealth, accordingly their marriage concept seems to be more free, open and equal.2.2 the Comparison of Religious BeliefBuddhism has introduced into China for one thousand years, people believe that theremust be "Buddha” control their de stines. Buddhism is contrary to the laws that “a man should get married on coming age, and so should a girl”. It does not advocate marri age, but typical “throwing up families and being monks”In many western countries, especially in Britain and the United States, people believe in Christianity, most of them are pious Christian. Christians consider that the harmony between men and women is fundamental. Men and women should kind to each other, love each other and promote each other. The marriage of the Christian mode is: God will decide, for personal interest’s combination, loyal and love to each other forever. The different religious ideology, thus be bound to the difference in the marriage.2.3 the Comparison of Economic Development and Social EthosSince the reform and opening, with the development of economy and the deepening of the communication between Chinese culture and western culture, the younger generation is no longer subject to the constraints of China's traditional thought; they have the chance to choose mates. Many young people began to free love, but when thinking of getting married, most would choose “suitable". The economic co ndition is the firstcondition of women in choosing a mate. China is still a developing country, the central and western regions are still poor areas. So, many people tread marriage as a springboard, if one marry to rich families, it would be like rebirth.America is characterized by the higher economic level, a short history and absence of the influence of the feudal remnants. Therefore, it could early carry into the industrial revolution. Just because of above factors, the economical status seems more equal. When choosing mates, generally, they do not care about family background, education degree, paying more attention to the fact that if they have similar tastes and interests.2.4 Chinese Collectivism and American Individualism MarriageValuesChina is a culture group that treats collectivism as the core values, and personal interests should obey collective interests. It pays attention to cultivate a harmonious, tolerant of interpersonal relations. The behaviors of Chinese families’ ideas often treat the ir own collective interests as the center.China is influenced by Confucianism, family members are not completely equal, and marriage is a significant impact to both husband and wife. In China, marriage is no longer belonging to personal problems; it contains morality, responsibility, sense of honor and so on. Chinese people are proud of modest and oppose to overly expose their selves. Therefore, Chinese culture reflects the characteristics of community which are not allowed to put personal values take precedence over group interests. In China, marry a person is married him all the sum of social relations. The essence of our traditional marriage concept is: family first and personal happiness insignificantly. Under this traditional ideainfluence, for thousands of years, numerous people give up a lifetime of love and happiness in order to get peace of mind and self comfort. The small family certainly gives way to the collective.Americans advocate independence and freedom, its unique culture origin forms the values of independent thinking, rights and equal idea. The America emphasizes individual equality, independent development and right consciousness, which advocates personal values take precedence over group interests. In American society, the mainstream view is the family is always more important than work.Chapter Three the Influence of the Different MarriageConceptIn recent years, with the rapid development of economy, great changes have taken place in young men and women's concept of marriage; the traditional view of marriage and love have faced unprecedented challenges. Whether the concept of marriage is positive or not, directly related to the people’s mental health, study and work, which affects the overall quality of young people and the overall level of development, affecting the national quality and social development in the future.3.1 the Influence of Marriage Concept in ChinaWith the rapid development of economy and society, people's living standard are improved greatly, Hedonism of western capitalist culture has had a huge impact on our daily life. Meanwhile the idea of money worship, individualism and other decadent ideas also have quickly spread in the society which causes great impacts on traditional concept and marriage concept. Nowadays, people become more and more reality, when choosing mates, they care much about one’s economic condition.Money can't buy you love, but in modern China it can bring you the pick of 50,000 of China's prettiest girls after one of the country's largest online dating agencies held a competition to find the perfect match for 18 of its dollar-millionaire members. Earlier this year one female contestant on a television dating show caused an online outcry when she flippantly remarked that she would "rather be crying in the backseat of BMW than smiling on the back of a bicycle"。
the Differences between Chinese and American Values
the Differences between Chinese and American ValuesDecade of years have witnessed a gradually change of people's value toward their lives. And it is commonly acknowledged that there are some differences between Chinese and American, which can be recognized as the represent for Chinese and America culture respectively. The following paragraphs will state this point of view further.Chinese Values:In China, Confucian thought has dominated the Chinese way of life for almost 2,000 years. In Song Dynasty, ZhuXi, a famous academician, carried forward Confucian thought. So, the widely accepted traditional values derive largely from the influence of Confucian philosophy and they are at the very core of Chinese identity. The Chinese value the importance of the family, the hierarchical structure of social life, the cultivation of morality and self-restraint and the emphasis on hard work and achievement. In many ways the family unit is more important than its individual members. Children must learn not to answer back to their parents or other elders. Chinese values emphasize loyalty to the community and the country, modesty and righteousness in social activities. In Chinese tradition, the interest of the community is always more important than that of the individual. There are also lots of values in China, such as:filial piety, thrift, diligent, golden mean, rite, righteousness and so on.American values:The formation of American values is combine Americans' frontier heritage's values with European early settlers' values together. We hold these truths to be self-evident,that all man are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and that among these are Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.——The Declaration of Independence Basic American values include individual freedom, self-reliance, equality of opportunity, hard work, material wealth, and competition. It is the cornerstone of American values. On the aspect of freedom, Americans mean the desire and the right of all individuals to control their fate without any other interference. They are highly individualistic in their thoughts and actions. With great emphasis on individual values, each person is seen as separate. Social relations are based on the autonomy of each person, which means that each person should be treated as an individual first and then as a member of a group. Individuals must learn to rely on themselves, otherwise they may risk losing freedom. Individualism often entail privacy. The notion of individual privacy is seen as desirable and highly valued by Americans. Equality or fairness is highly cherished in USA. On the aspect of equality, Americans mean that each individual should have an equal chance for success. Americans believes that all people are created equal and that all should have an equal opportunity to succeed. Every one has the right to compete with others equally. To sum up what I have illustrate above, there is a point where both us Chinese and American should reach that although a various differences exist, we could not decide which is better or not superficially. In fact, as an undergraduate, we need to not only conserve the positive parts but also abandon the negative aspects decidedly.。
Dating in AmericaMillions of people in the United States are alone. They are not married or involved in a close relationship. Some of these people wish they could find someone to date. They wish they could celebrate V alentine’s Day with a special person. There are a number of ways to find someone to date. Some people meet at work, others meet by chance in a public place. Still others visit places where other single people go or they can use businesses that help organize dates. Many men and women find dates through services they find on their personal computers. The purpose of dating is to have fun. Sometimes people who date develop a close relationship. Some people decide to live together, yet remain unmarried. Others decide to get married. In the past, young people in America usually lived with their parens until they got married. Today, some still do, yet, most young people live a more independent life. They have a job. They travel. They rent or own their own apartment or house. They wait longer to get married. While waiting, they date. Often a friend will plan a meeting between 2 unmarried people who do not know each other. This is called a blind date. The people involved are not blind. They just have never seen each other. However, most unmarried people have to find their own dates. Many go to public eating, drinking, or dancing places. Every city in America has them. Some places are popular with young people. Others are for older people. Many Americans, however, want to go where they are sure they can meet people with similar interests. For example, they may go to a bookstore. Some bookstores in America now serve coffee and food. Many offer special programs and social activities for single people. Other singles join health clubs to exercise and to meet people or they may join groups for people who like to take longwalks or watch birds.

Jim was studying French and Steve Chinese, both at the Foreign Service Institute. We shared many things in common, but we also thought and acted quite differently. Steve was interested in speaking Chinese. He always tried every opportunity to talk with me with his very English-like pronunciation. I was often touched by his diligence. However, I wanted to practice English with him, too. So we often spoke at the same time in the other's mother tongue. Jim was fresh from college and the youngest of the three. He was going out all the time. The only time we met was at breakfast. There was a small round table in our kitchen, where we sat around to enjoy our food. Steve had Chinese fast food such as dumplings or noodles, and I ate bread and boiled eggs. But Jim often just drank a cup of tea because he had nothing in his fridge. He was too busy dating pretty French girls to do any shopping. I often offered him some of my food. But Steve told me in his poor Chinese that I didn't need to do that. He said that it was Jim's own fault and that it served him right. Although he was learningChinese, he still held his American sense of values. Two years later, I returned to China. The three of us still keep in touch. Jim now works in a travel agency in Paris. He got married to one of the pretty girls. He wrote to tell us that he can now enjoy a delicious breakfast with his beautiful wife every morning in their comfortable living room. Steve wants to work in China. And I'm helping him with this. I have introduced him to the dean of the Oversea Section of our university. He is very interested in Steve. He wants to know if Steve can work here teaching the oversea students Chinese. I have sent the message to Steve. I'm sure he'd be very happy to accept the job. However, I hope he could try harder to improve himself. Otherwise, all the overseas students would speak with his terrible pronunciation!Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage()A.The three of them were all language majorsB.Steve and Jim were more alike in characterC.The author didn't enjoy talking with SteveD.Their living condition was rather poor2、What is the author's opinion of Steve()A.Steve was a very hardworking fellowB.Steve enjoyed cooking Chinese foodC.Steve enjoyed shopping more than JimD.Steve's Chinese accent was quite pure3、Which of the following is TRUE about Jim()A.Going out with girls cost him a lot of timeB.He had a French way of making friendsC.He learned French in order to date Paris girlsD.He liked doing housework4、The last sentence of the first paragraph implies that______()A.Steve didn't like offering help to othersB.American people only eat their own foodC.American and Chinese differ in their sense of values D.Steve wanted Jim to do his own shopping5、From the last paragraph, we can learn that _____()A.Jim is a very good husbandB.Steve enjoys teaching ChineseC.the author works for overseas studentsD.the three friends still keep in touch6、Passage TwoHow often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has itspleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities. If a child has good parents, he is well fed, looked after and loved. It is unlikely that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because theyare too well known. A child finds pleasure in playing in the rain, or in the snow. His first visit to the seaside is a marvelous adventure. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told what to do and what not to do. Therefore, a child is not as happy as he wishes to be. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he becomes free from the discipline of school and parents; but at the same time he is forced to accept responsibilities. With no one to pay for his food, his clothes, or his room, he has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may get himself into trouble. If, however, he works hard, goes by the law and has good health, he may feel satisfied in seeing himself make steady progress in his job and in building up for himself his own position in society.Old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be, but it is not necessary for the old to be unhappy. With old age comes wisdom and the ability to help others with advice wisely given. The old can have the joy of seeing their children making progress in life, they can watch their grandchildren growing up around them; and, perhaps best of all, they can, if their life has been a useful one, feel the happiness of having come through the battle of life safely and of having reached a time when they can lie back and rest, leaving everything to others The happiest people should be those who ______()A.face up to difficulties in lifeB.hope to be young againC.enjoy life in different agesD.wish to grow up7、The underlined word they in Para. 2 refers to_____()A.older peopleB.new thingsC.childrenD.interests8、A child has his pains because_____()A.he can not do whatever he wants toB.he is not allowed to play in rainC.he has a lot of new things to learnD.he can not play at the seaside freely9、When a child becomes a grown-up, he is supposed to _______()A.live comfortablyB.take responsibilitiesC.make progress in jobsD.impress the society10、The best title of the passage might be _______()A.Pains and AgesB.Differences in AgesC.The Best Age to BeD.Happiness and Ages11、Passage ThreeLife really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world of wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoonscan leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a signof happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves. Dr. Robert Coles, an internationally famous doctor, is the world's top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject, The Privileged Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich, says the 53-year-old doctor, such as better health, education and future work expectation, but most important is the quality of family life. Money can't buy love.It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that's where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Their parents'over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless. But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world, adds Mr. Coles, and they are more self-assured.Today's rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So theirpriority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in moneyAccording to the passage, children of rich families _______()A.enjoy travelingB.can buy loveC.usually commit suicideD.are not always happy12、Dr. Robert Coles believes that ______()A.being rich has as many advantages as being poorB.rich children often get too little entertainmentC.rich children sometimes can't enjoy the thing they are most in need ofD.rich children aren't given enough things13、Which of the following statements is not true according to the passage()A.It is love that is always lacking in rich and poor families alikeB.Silver spoons can sometimes leave a bitter tasteC.Money can't buy everythingD.Rich children are often confused because they have so much to choose from14、The expression silver spoons in Paragraph 1 means_____()A.very expensive spoonsB.rich peopleC.wealthD.spoons made of silver15、This article is written mainly to tell readers that _______()A.the rich are more likely to do away with themselvesB.money can bring a lot of things, including loveC.life is always happy for children of rich parentsD.rich parents should realize what is important in the family is love rather than money16、Passage FourCharlene, a 16-year-old student at a high school, found herself faced with a maths test to which she knew none of the answers. Rather than fail, she took the test out with her and filled in the answers with the help of her friends. During a break, she got back into the classroom without being seen, crumpled(揉皱) the test with her shoe, and left it lying on the floor. The teacher thought it had been dropped when the tests were collected; she corrected it, and Charlene receiveda B.Cheating is, of course, nothing new. But today, educators are finding that cheating on the part of students has become more frequent than in the past. Whether it is copying a friend's homework, using a prepared sheet on an exam, stealing advance copies of a final, writing down rules in one's hand, or paying someone else to write a term paper, cheating appears to have gained acceptance among a growing number of students between 13 and 19.In a 1978 study of cheating at twenty-two high schools in Georgia, it was found that cheating was common among good and poor students alike—although both boys and girls said they thought boys cheated more. Why is student cheating on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame cheating on a general loss of good values among today's youth. They point to facts showing increased damage of public things and school stealing and think that reports, such as Watergate(水门大事), have disappointed youth about the honesty of people in higher position.Others think that today's youth are far more practical than their forefathers(先辈). In the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with imaginations aboutchanging the world, but today's students feel great stress to succeedAccording to Paragraph 1, Charlene took the test out because ______()A.her friends could answer none of the problemsB.she tore the test paper to piecesC.she stepped her shoes on the test paperD.she did not want to fail in the maths test17、Charlene passed the test because ______()A.she answered all the questions by herselfB.she did the test by cheatingC.she persuaded her teacher to give her a BD.she returned to the classroom to redo the test18、Which of the following is not an example to show that cheating is becoming more and more common()A.A student pays another for doing a test paperB.A student writes down something to be tested before an exam C.A student gets well prepared in his studies before an exam D.A student gets homework from his classmate and then copies it19、The 1978 study of cheating in Georgia shows that______()A.only students in the 24 high schools cheated in examinationsB.both good and poor students cheated in examinationsC.more girls cheated in examinations than boys didD.boys like cheating while girls do not like it20、One of the facts for the general loss of good values among today's youth is that_____()A.more and more public things are damagedB.good values disappoint studentsC.more and more students begin to stealD.honest people are in higher positions参考答案:【一、单选题】1~5CBAAD6~10DCABB11~40点击下载查看答案【二、完形填空】1~5ACBDB6~10ACBAC11~20点击下载查看答案【三、阅读理解】1~5AAACD6~10CBABD11~20点击下载查看答案。
Customs and Traditions in the United States and China。
Customs and traditions are an integral part of any culture, shaping the way people live and interact with one another. The United States and China are two vastly different countries with their own unique customs and traditions. In this essay, we will explore the customs and traditions of both countries and compare and contrast them.In the United States, one of the most prominent customs is the celebration of Thanksgiving. This holiday, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November, is a time for families and friends to come together and give thanks for the blessings in their lives. It is typically celebrated with a large feast, featuring turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Another important tradition in the United States is the celebration of Independence Day on the 4th of July. This holiday is marked by fireworks, parades, and barbecues, as Americans commemorate thesigning of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.In China, one of the most important customs is the celebration of the Chinese New Year. This holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, is a time for families to come together and usher in the new year with feasting and fireworks. Another important tradition in China is the practice of filial piety, which emphasizes the importance of respecting and caring for one's parents and elders. This tradition is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture and is reflected in the way families interact with one another. While the customs and traditions of the United States and China are unique, there are also some similarities between the two countries. For example, both countries place a strong emphasis on family and the importance of spending time together. In the United States, family gatherings are common during holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, while in China, the Chinese New Year is a time for families to come together and celebrate.Another similarity between the two countries is theimportance of food in their respective cultures. In both the United States and China, food plays a central role in social gatherings and celebrations. Whether it's a Thanksgiving feast in the United States or a Chinese New Year banquet in China, food is a way for people to come together and share in the joy of the occasion.Despite these similarities, there are also some key differences between the customs and traditions of the United States and China. For example, in the United States, individualism is highly valued, and people are encouraged to pursue their own goals and ambitions. In contrast, in China, collectivism is more prevalent, and the needs of the group are often prioritized over those of the individual.Another difference is the way in which time is perceived in each culture. In the United States, time is often viewed as a valuable commodity, and punctuality is highly valued. In China, however, time is seen as more fluid, and it is not uncommon for people to arrive late to social gatherings. In conclusion, the customs and traditions of the United States and China are as diverse and rich as the countries themselves. While there are some similarities between the two cultures, there are also some key differences thatreflect the unique values and beliefs of each society. By understanding and appreciating these customs and traditions, we can gain a deeper insight into the cultures of both countries.。
1The Contrasts Between Chinese and American StudentsAs an international student who has experienced education in both China and the United States, I have noticed significant differences between Chinese and American students in their academic approaches, mindsets, and overall lifestyles. These disparities stem from cultural influences, educational systems, and societal expectations, shaping the distinct experiences of students in each country.Academic Rigor and PressureOne of the most striking contrasts lies in the level of academic pressure and rigor. Chinese students, from a young age, are subjected to an intense and highly competitive educational environment. The emphasis on academic achievement is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture, with parents and teachers placing immense importance on test scores and academic performance. In China, the notorious "gaokao" (College Entrance Examination) is a make-or-break event that determines a student's future prospects. The pressure to excel in this exam is overwhelming, leading many Chinese students to endure grueling study schedules and immense stress. Extracurricular activities or personal interests often take a backseat to academic pursuits. On the other hand, American students generally experience a more balanced approach to education. While academic performance is still valued, there is a greater emphasis onwell-rounded development, including extracurricular activities, social skills, and personal growth. The pressure to achieve top grades is present but often not as intense as in China.Learning Styles and Classroom DynamicsThe learning styles and classroom dynamics in China and the United States also differ significantly. Chinese classrooms tend to be more teacher-centered, with a focus on rote learning, memorization, and lecture-based instruction. Students are expected to be passive recipients of knowledge, diligently taking notes and absorbing information. In contrast, American classrooms promote a more interactive and participatory learning environment. Students areencouraged to ask questions, engage in discussions, and express their opinions. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative learning are highly valued. Teachers act more as facilitators, guiding students through the learning process rather than simply imparting knowledge.Extracurricular Activities and Social LifeThe role of extracurricular activities and social life in the lives of Chinese and American students also differs considerably. In China, the primary focus is on academic pursuits, with extracurricular activities often taking a backseat. Chinese students may participate in a few structured activities, such as music lessons or sports clubs, but these are typically seen as supplementary to their studies. In the United States, however, extracurricular activities are an integral part of the student experience. American students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities, from sports teams and clubs to volunteering and community service. These activities are valued not only for their social and personal development benefits but also for their potential to enhance college applications.American students also tend to have a more active social life, with a greater emphasis on socializing, dating, and partying. While Chinese students do engage in social activities, the intensity and frequency are generally lower due to the academic demands and cultural expectations.Parental Involvement and ExpectationsParental involvement and expectations also play a significant role in shaping the experiences of Chinese and American students. In Chinese culture, parents are heavily involved in their children's education, often pushing them to excel academically from a young age. There is a strong emphasis on bringing honor and pride to the family through academic achievement.American parents, while supportive of their children's education, tend to be more hands-off and encourage independence and self-discovery. They may provide guidance and resources but typically allow their children more autonomy in their academic and personal decisions.Future Prospects and Career PathsThe differing academic experiences and cultural expectations of Chinese and American students often influence their future prospects and career paths. In China, the highly competitive educational system and emphasis on academic achievement often lead students to pursue traditional, prestigious careers such as medicine, engineering, or civil service.American students, on the other hand, have a broader range of career options and are encouraged to explore their passions and interests. While some may follow traditional paths, others may pursue unconventional or entrepreneurial ventures, driven by their individual goals and aspirations.ConclusionIn conclusion, the differences between Chinese and American students are profound and multifaceted, rooted in cultural, educational, and societal factors. Chinese students face intense academic pressure and a highly competitive environment, with a focus on rote learning and exam performance. American students, while still valuing academic achievement, experience a more balanced approach, with greater emphasis on extracurricular activities, social life, and personal growth. These contrasting experiences shape the mindsets, priorities, and future trajectories of students in each country. While both systems have their strengths and weaknesses, understanding these differences can foster cross-cultural understanding andappreciation for the diverse educational journeys of students worldwide.篇2The Contrast Between Chinese and American StudentsAs an international student who has experienced both the Chinese and American education systems, I have noticed significant differences in the approaches and mindsets of students from these two countries. While generalizations should be made cautiously, there are distinct cultural and societal influences that shape the learning habits and attitudes of Chinese and American pupils. One of the most striking contrasts lies in the perception of academic achievement. For Chinese students, academic excellence is often viewed as a paramount pursuit, deeply ingrained from a young age. Education is regarded as a sacred pathway to success, and parents instill a deep-rooted reverence for educational attainment in their children. From an early age, Chinese pupils are conditioned to view academic performance as a reflection of their worth and a determinant of their future prospects. This emphasis on academic achievement manifests itself in the study habits of Chinese students. They are known for their diligence, resilience, and unwavering dedication to their studies. Long hours of intense studying, memorization, and practice are the norm. Chinese students are taught to prioritize discipline and perseverance over innate talent or intelligence. The notion of "hard work triumphs over natural ability" is deeply ingrained in the Chinese educational philosophy. In contrast, the American approach to education often places a greater emphasis on well-rounded development, critical thinking, and personal growth. While academic achievement is certainly valued, there is a more balanced perspective on its significance. American students are encouraged to explore their interests, participate in extracurricular activities, and develop social skills alongside their academic pursuits. The classroom dynamics in American and Chinese educational settings also differ substantially. In Chinese classrooms, the teaching style is often more teacher-centered, with a focus on lecture-based instruction and rote memorization. Students are expected to listen attentively, take meticulous notes, and follow the teacher's lead. Questioning or challenging theteacher's authority is generally discouraged, as respect for elders and hierarchy is deeply embedded in Chinese culture.Conversely, American classrooms tend to foster a more interactive and participatory learning environment. Students are encouraged to ask questions, engage in discussions, and express their opinions. Critical thinking and independent reasoning are highly valued, and teachers often act as facilitators, guiding students toward discovering knowledge rather than merely imparting information. The approach to testing and assessment also varies between the two educational systems. Chinese students are accustomed to high-stakes, standardized exams that carry immense weight in determining their academic futures. The pressure to excel in these exams is immense, and students often undergo rigorous preparation and coaching to maximize their scores. In contrast, American assessments tend to be more diverse, incorporating project-based learning, presentations, and continuous evaluation throughout the academic year. While standardized tests are still significant, there is a greater emphasis on assessing a student's overall learning process and skill development rather than solely relying on a single, high-stakes examination.Despite these differences, both Chinese and American students share a common desire for knowledge and personal growth. However, the paths they take to achieve these goals are shaped by their respective cultural and societal influences. It is crucial to recognize that these contrasts are not absolute, and there are exceptions within each educational system. Additionally, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, there is a growing recognition of the strengths and limitations of both approaches, leading to cross-cultural exchange and adaptation.Ultimately, the differences between Chinese and American students reflect the diverse values and priorities embedded within their respective societies. By understanding and appreciating these contrasts, we can foster mutual respect, learn from one another's strengths, and work towards creating educational environments that nurture the unique talents and aspirations of all students.篇3The Stark Contrast: Chinese Students vs American StudentsAs an international student who has experienced both the Chinese and American education systems, I can't help but noticethe striking differences between students from these two vastly different cultures. From work ethics to social lives, the contrasts are profound and often surprising. In this essay, I will delve into the key distinctions that define the academic journeys and overall lifestyles of Chinese and American students.Work Ethic and Academic PressureOne of the most glaring disparities lies in the realm of work ethic and academic pressure. Chinese students, from a very young age, are instilled with a deep-rooted belief in the importance of education and academic excellence. This cultural emphasis on education stems from the Confucian values that have shaped Chinese society for centuries. Academic success is not merely a personal goal but a familial and societal expectation. From the moment they enter the education system, Chinese students are bombarded with a relentless stream of homework, tests, and extracurricular activities. The pressure to excel is immense, and the competition is fierce. Students often spend countless hours studying, sometimes well into the night, driven by the fear of falling behind their peers. In contrast, American students generally experience a more relaxed academic environment. While education is certainlyvalued, the pressure to achieve top grades is often not as intense. American students are encouraged to explore their interests, participate in various extracurricular activities, and maintain a balanced lifestyle. The focus is not solely on academic prowess but on developing well-rounded individuals.Social Lives and Extracurricular ActivitiesThe social lives and extracurricular activities of Chinese and American students also differ substantially. For Chinese students, the emphasis on academic achievement often leaves little room for a vibrant social life or indulgence in hobbies and interests outside of academics. Their schedules are typically packed with tutoring sessions, cram schools, and endless hours of study.Conversely, American students tend to have a more active social life and engage in a wide range of extracurricular activities. From sports teams to clubs and organizations, American students are encouraged to pursue their passions and interests beyond the classroom. This emphasis on extracurricular activities is often seen as an essential part of their overall development and a way to build character, leadership skills, and awell-rounded resume for college applications.Classroom Dynamics and Teaching StylesThe classroom dynamics and teaching styles in Chinese and American schools also exhibit notable differences. In Chinese classrooms, the teaching approach is often more traditional and teacher-centered. Students are expected to be passive recipients of knowledge, diligently taking notes and memorizing information. Class participation and open discussions are generally discouraged, as respect for authority and obedience to the teacher are deeply ingrained values. On the other hand, American classrooms tend to be more interactive and student-centered. Teachers encourage open discussions, critical thinking, and the expression of individual opinions. Students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and engage in lively debates. This approach fosters creativity, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think independently.Parental Involvement and ExpectationsParental involvement and expectations also play a significant role in shaping the experiences of Chinese and American students. Chinese parents often have exceedingly high expectations for their children's academic performance. They are heavily involved in their children's education, closely monitoringtheir progress and providing constant guidance and pressure to succeed. In contrast, American parents generally take a morehands-off approach, allowing their children to explore their interests and make their own choices. While supportive, they often place less emphasis on academic achievement as the sole measure of success. American parents are more likely to encourage their children to pursue their passions and find their own paths in life.Future Prospects and Career ChoicesThe differences in academic experiences and societal expectations also influence the future prospects and career choices of Chinese and American students. For many Chinese students, the ultimate goal is to secure a prestigious and financially stable career, often in fields like medicine, engineering, or finance. The pressure to choose a "safe" and socially respected career path is immense. In contrast, American students tend to have more freedom in choosing their career paths. While some may opt for traditional professions, others may pursue more unconventional or creative careers. The emphasis is often on finding a career thataligns with their passions and personal fulfillment, rather than solely focusing on societal expectations or financial stability.ConclusionWhile sweeping generalizations should be avoided, the contrasts between Chinese and American students are undeniable. From work ethics and academic pressure to social lives, classroom dynamics, and future prospects, these two groups of students navigate vastly different educational and cultural landscapes.Chinese students often face immense pressure to excel academically, with little room for extracurricular activities or personal interests. Their educational journey is heavily structured and focused on memorization and obedience to authority. In contrast, American students experience a more balanced approach, with opportunities to explore their passions, engage in open discussions, and develop critical thinking skills. These differences are deeply rooted in the cultural values and societal expectations of each nation. While neither system is inherently superior, understanding these contrasts can foster greater appreciation for diverse educational experiences and the unique challenges and opportunities faced by students from different backgrounds. As an international student, navigating these differences has been both eye-opening and enriching. It has taught me the importance of cultural sensitivity, open-mindedness, and the recognition that there are multiple paths to success and personal fulfillment. Ultimately, bridging these gaps and learning from one another's strengths can pave the way for a more harmonious and inclusive global community.。

10 Major Cultural Differences Between China and the United StatesIt is always interesting to study other cultures and it is extremely important to do just that if you are going to have interactions with them. You don’t want to insult someone or embarrass yourself and your own culture. These differences do not make either culture better or worse than the other one. It just shows their differences which has been created through centuries of history and development. China can trace their traditions and customs for thousands of years. America is still a small babe of a nation that has had very few traditions of its own but has become such a melting pot of cultures that there is almost no specific American culture that can be said is applied across the board. This makes both cultures unique and worthy of study and respect.1. Social Structure– In China the social structure is formal and hierarchical. You know where you fit in the structure and you abide by the rules there. There is no crossing into other areas. In America, it is much more loose and informal. It is not uncommon to see those of various social levels socializing and knowing each other. There are very few lines that socially are not allowed to be crossed. This can cause problems in business relationships if the visiting culture is unaware of it.2. Confrontation/Conflict – If you are planning on conducting business in China or expecting an extended stay, it might be useful to know that the direct way that most Americans approach issues is not the way to go in China. Direct conflict or confrontation over issues is highly frowned upon. Doesn’t matter that the “truth” needs to be spoken, respect and honor to each person supersedes that.To prove a point and show yourself in the right even over business issues is considered shameful and should be avoided.3. Self – The Chinese looks more at the group collective than at individualism. America has become known for its push of individualism which has been a source of conflict with other cultures that look collectively. A person from China is more prone to look at how their acts affect the whole instead of how it affects them personally. They are more willing to give up and sacrifice for the greatergood. America’s individualism has been its backbone and the reason for its success as a world power, but when visiting China it needs to be reined in.4. Face/Reputation– Reputation of the individual is very important in China. If an action will humiliate someone or ruin a reputation, it is avoided. When shame occurs, the person sacrifices their job or whatever it is that will heal the shame. In America, reputations come and go overnight and in the end usually does not matter. The end result is more of the focus. A person is more likely to overlook a reputation to get the job done.5. Business Relations – When doing business in China, be prepared for muchsocializing. Business becomes secondary as the parties get to know each better. If it delays a contract, that is perfectly acceptable as long as the correct social time is allotted for. In America, businessassociates are usually more aloof. There might be some social gathering but the business is more important and the socializing will be sacrificed to get the job done if needed. Though there seems to be shift in America regarding this. The recognition of networking is becoming more pronounced.6. Morals – Chinese society places high values on the morals of their people. Marriage is not encouraged until the late twenties. In fact, dating is discouraged early in a young adult’s life and proprieties are expected to be held up. The American culture is much more relaxed and some could even argue that there needs to be more moral emphasize.7. Recognition of the Dead – One of the time honored traditions of the Chinese is the recognition of the dead. Once a year, all members of a family visit the gravesites of each ancestor and pay their respects. Honoring ancestors is very important in Chinese culture. This is in direct contrast to most Americans who rarely know where the majority of their ancestors are laid to rest. This might be due to the fact that most Americans are immigrants who either have lost the information on grave locations or the locations are in foreign countries. China’s culture is much older and the percentage of immigration is far less.8. Humility – Humility is a revered virtue in Chinese culture. The success of one’s business or personal life is downplayed while in America the successes are lauded. Most Americans in the fast business world consider humility a sign of weakness. This can be an issue that hurts inter-cultural relations. Be very sensitive to comments and actions in the presence of another culture.9. Time Sensitivity – Crossing cultures for business can be frustrating when it interferes with getting the job done. Most Americans are very time sensitive when it comes to meetings and deadlines. If the meeting was to commence at 2:00, then all parties are to be present at that time. The Chinese do not view time as an absolute but more as a suggestion. Concern is not expressed for a meeting starting late or ending at a different time. The same can be applied to deadlines. If a report is due on Friday, an American would be waiting for that report to be received before end of business day. The Chinese would not worry if it showed up several days later.10. Respect –Being sensitive to another person’s needs is very important in Chinese culture. It is expected that you will respect the other person and treat them well. Their needs are met at each encounter. This is a characteristic that unfortunately has fallen on the wayside in most American circles.Communication habits researchWe are conducting a survey on communication habits in different countries. American and Chinese Dating
Currently, millions of people are alone. They are not married or involved in a close relationship. So some of them wish to date with somebody to make more friends or for deeper devolopment both both in America and China. However, it still exists many differences in American and Chinese dating.
As we all know, Americans have a strong time consciousness. They like to be punctual and pay attention to the credit. Yet, if they are invited to dinner, they often go a few minutes late. Because it‟s unpolite to be earlier than the host. And if you have something emergency to do and can‟t go on time, you must call to notice and explain. Futher more, remember that you should not stand somebody up at will.
In contrast to America, if a Chinese girl dates with a boy for the first time, she likes to be late for ten or fifteen minutes on purpose, in order to test the boy‟s patience. And some people have a special favor of being late.
The dating atmosphere in America is more romantic than that in China. And Americans are more open on love view. So before the dating, they would choose dovetails which can show their own elegant demeanour. Relatively, to resered Chinese, they prefer to the costumes which match with their own position and status.
To presents, Americans are accustomed to open them at once and then give praise. Generally speaking, Americans don‟t like to send gifts casually, however, when it comes to holidays, birthday, marriage or visit patients, the presents are needed. In addition, Americans regard odd number as propitious. Sometimes, just three pears will make them feel happy, too. But in China, people like to open the presents afterwards. And they stress things in pairs.
It‟s very common of watching flims and eating meals in dating. In America, it also called …movie date‟. Both woman and man can invite each other initiatively, and often men are more actively. They can go Dutch or stand treat by one side. Usually, if an American friend says, “Let‟s go get a bear.”or “Want a cup of coffee?” It means go Dutch. Just don‟t misunderstand it. And in China, it‟s often the men‟s treat in dating, as if in this way can it shows their manliness. Also, the women always enjoy that.
In America, often a friend will plan a meeting between two unmarried people who do not know each other before. This is called a “blind date”. And many Americans want to go where they are sure they can meet people with similar interests, like pubs and dancing places. Besides, they may go to a bookstore. Some bookstores in America now serve coffee and food. And many special programs and activities for single people. Other singles join in clubs to meet people.
But in China, parents or relatives often arrange the “blind date”. And nowadays, many dating shows come out one after another. It offers an opportunity to singles to meet more people.
At times, dating doesn‟t mean the two people must become special companions or something else. Now matter in America or China, it‟s a way of increaing friendship and sparing a happy time together. And remember, respect must be the basic principle in dating.。
