Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I wishe d her every success. But part of me didn’t.I actually wanted her to fail in some ways becauseI believe that failure can be go od for our learning process.Success is proving that you can d
o something that you already know you can do, or doing somet hing correctly the first time, which can often be a problematic vi ctory.First-time success is usually a fluke(侥幸).First-time failure, by contrast, is expected to be the natural order of t hings.Failure is how we learn.
In Africa they describe a good cook as “She who has broken m any pots.”If you've spent enough time in the kitchen to have br oken a lot of pots, probably you know a fair amount about cooki ng.I once had dinner with a group of cooks, and they spent ti me comparing knife wounds and burn scars. They knew how much credibility their failures gave them.
I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each we ek I am aware that one column .I write will be my worst .I do n't set out to write it; I try my best every day.I have learned to cherish that column.A successful column usually means that I am discussing my familiar topic, writing in a style I am used to o r saying the same things as anyone else but in a fancy way.My younger daughter is a trapeze artist. She spent three years putting together a show, and she did it successfully for years. There was no reason for her to change it but she did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new and she was bored. And if she was bored, there was no point in subjecting her body to all that stress. She risked failure and profound publ
ic embarrassment in order to feed her soul.
My granddaughter is a perfectionis. She will feel her failures, a nd I will want to comfort her.But I will also, I hope, remind her of what she learned, and how she can do better next time.I ho pe I can tell her, though, that it's not the end of the world.Inde ed, with luck, it is the beginning.

What exactly is intelligence? There aren’t any easy answers.D espite the progress that has been made in genetics and psycho logy, human intelligence has remained one of the most controv ersial areas of modern science,
until now, that is, for the discovery of a gene(基
因) linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his c olleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up.From their research, they have discovered that a slightly di fferent gene is more common in those with a high IQ.Plomin a nalyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 a
nd 15.What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136 , putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other gr oup had an average IQ of 103.An analysis of their genes sho wed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in qu estion, while only 16% in the second group did. However, ther e is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cauti ous at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably m any genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one .Several studies have sho wn a strong link between IQ and career success, although som e psychologists remain unconvinced about this.Professor Mic hael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these.“The people with the highest IQs are not usually t he ones who do best in their careers.”
Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to intelligen ce, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put f orward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligenc es, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors(因素) in intelligence.
Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is
enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses(天才) do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of in telligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Al bert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes t hat everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain.Perhaps there’s hope for us all!
59.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The development of intelligence.
B.The idea of multiple intelligences.
C.IQ isn’t everything for intelligence.
D.Alternative views have been put forward.
60.Why does the author use data in Paragraph 2?
A.To make a suggestion.B.To draw a conclusion.C.To prove an idea.D.To give an example.61.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Robert Plomin confirms genes have something in common .
B.Howard Gardner thinks intelligence includes various factors .
C.Michael Rowe approves of a strong link between IQ and car eer.
D.Tony Buzan agrees geniuses exercise brain to improve intel ligence.
62.What might be the best title of the passage?
A.The relationship between genes and intelligence.
B.IQ benefits a lot from high intelligence.
C.How to develop intelligence.
D.What makes intelligence.

Petroleum, consisting of crude oil(原
油) and natural gas, seems to originate from organic matter in marine sediment(海洋沉淀
物).Tiny organisms settle to the seafloor and gather in marin
e mud.The organic matter may partially break down, using up the dissolved oxygen in the sediment. As soon as the oxygen i s gone, decay stops and the remaining organic matter is preser ved.
Continued sedimentation buries the organic matter and subject s it to higher temperatures and pressures, which change the or ganic matter to oil and gas.As muddy sediments are pressed t ogether, the gas and small drops of oil may be squeezed out of the mud and may move into sandy layers nearby.Over million s of years, accumulations of gas and oil can collect in the sandy layers. Both oil and gas are less dense than water, so they ge nerally tend to rise upward through rock and sediment.
Oil pools are valuable underground accumulations of oil, and oil fields are regions underlain by one or more oil pools. When an oil pool or field is discovered, wells are drilled into the ground. When the well reaches a pool, oil usually rises up the well beca use of its density difference(密度
差) with water beneath it or because of the pressure of expan ding gas trapped above it.Although this rise of oil is almost al ways carefully controlled today, strong natural flows of oil were common in the past.Gas pressure gradually dies out, and oil i s pumped from the well.Water or steam may be pumped dow n neighboring wells to help push the oil out.
As oil becomes increasingly difficult to find, the search for it is e xtended into more unfriendly environments. The development of the oil field on the North Slope of Alaska and the construction of the Alaska pipeline are examples of the great expense and d ifficulty involved in new oil discoveries.Offshore drilling platfor ms extend the search for oil to the ocean’s continental shelves .More than one-quarter of the world’s oil and almost one-
fifth of the world’s natural gas come from offshore, even though offshore drilling is six to seven times more expensive than drillin g on land.
Of course, there is far more oil underground than can be recove red.Even given the best exploration techniques, only about 30 to 40 percent of the oil in a given pool can be brought to the su rface. The rest is far too difficult to reach and has to remain un derground.
63.Which of the following is true about petroleum formation?
A.Microscopic organisms that live in mud produce crude oil an d natural gas.
B.Large amounts of oxygen are needed for petroleum formati on to begin.
C.Petroleum is formed when organic material in sediments co mbines with decaying organisms.
D.Petroleum formation appears to begin in marine sediments where organic matter exists.
64.What does the development of the Alaskan oil field mentio ned illustrate?
A.More petroleum is extracted from the sea than from la nd.
B.Drilling for oil requires huge financial investments.
C.The global demand for oil has been increasing over the yea rs.
D.The North Slope of Alaska has substantial amounts of oil.65.What does the author mainly intend to tell us in the passag e?
A.The formation, processing and exploration of petroleum B.The specific techniques involved in oil exploration.
C.The changing relationships between countries.
D.The future intense situation in oil product markets.66.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Available exploration techniques serve our purpose of explo ring oil very well.
B.More and more public regions will be further protected from being drilled in the future.
C.Countries may suffer from unpleasant relationships for resp ective benefits in exploring oil.
D.Powerful flows of oil is a phenomenon which can be witness ed rarely now.

The news that China bans time-
travel TV dramas and movies got a lot of attention on the intern et Yet, time travel in China is bit different from time travel in co mmon sense. It is anything but science fiction and always goe s backwards in time. There is minimum imagination involved-no ever-
ending circles that mess up present and future, no advanced te
chnology, no new social orders or new human forms from the t wenty-
whatever century, everything is a known historical fact when yo u travel through in China.
It is not even called time travel ; rather the Chinese people refer it as time crossover.Time crossover has been an extremely p opular theme for online novels for years (in fact , it is an indisp ensible part of China’s online culture), and didn’t get picked up by TV and the big screen until recent two years. Most of time —
travel dramas and movies are adapted from popular online nov els and like in other cases adaptations are never better than the original books.
The main plot of time—
travel novels or TV dramas can be very well summarized in one sentence: from nobody to somebody.Time travel in China is more about escaping from the reality than about realizing wild d reams.
In China , there is no need of time machine either.People trav el backwards in time via the possession of antiques presence at historical places of interest encounter of life—
threatening accidents or simple a look into the mirror. Some ti
me-
travel novels even start with “I wanted to go back to history so much that one morning when I opened my eyes I was back.”Technology is not relevant at all.
Though China is not short of histories to go back to people hav e their own preferences and it is pretty much a gender (性别)thing. If the main character is male then he usually goes back t o special times in history when he is able to help build up or tea r up a dynasty.A typical example is A Step Into the Past (寻秦记), the first time—
travel TV drama in China, which tells the story of how a SWAT member helps to unite China and build up Qin Dynasty .
On the other hand , female characters primarily go back to Qing Dynasty partly because Qing Dynasty has the most number of princes to fall in love with.Yongzheng Emperor is the favorite .As can be seen in Startling by Each Step(步步惊
心), a Qing time crossover classic, a girl goes back to Qing Dy nasty and falls in love with Yongzheng Emperor and his brother s.
67.As for time travel in China, which of the following ideas doe s the writer agree to ?
A.it is complicated and can be classified into science fiction.
B.it is often based on the familiar story in history.
C.it sometimes messes up the times and social orders.

My Understanding of Happiness
Having the sense of happiness is of great significance. As a vita l factor of life, it brings us power, arouses our enthusiasm for lo ving life, and helps us create a promising future.
In addition to material basis, the sense of happiness also refers to several other aspects. Firstly, based on a recent survey, the majority of individuals admit that they are no longer content with being fed and clothed adequately, and their happiness depend s more on their success in careers, friendship and love. Second ly, a great many people claim that health is the key to their sens e of happiness. It is health that enables them to build up a solid foundation for anything significant.
As a student, I am convinced that never can money equal happi ness. To enhance our sense of happiness, we should advocate and encourage our friends and classmates to enrich their knowl edge, broaden their horizon and cultivate their ability.
