Text 1
W:I was thinking we could get a dog. I had one when I was a kid, and it was great.
M:No way. They're messy, and they need a lot of attention. A cat might be OK, though.
Text 2
W:Did you feed Frank today?
M:Yes, I did. I also gave him a bath.
W:Thank you, honey. Could you take him to the vet tomorrow? His appointment is at 10:00 in the morning.
Text 3
M:My daughter really wanted a dog, so we went down to a local pet shop. All the dogs in the window were less than six months old and really cute, but they were so expensive! I told her that I couldn't afford any of those dogs. Next, we went to a private animal hospital that had a shelter next door. We saw an amazing dog that was four months old. Her name was Ella, and she was brown with big dark eyes. She was perfect! We told the staff that we wanted to take her home, but they told us that we would have to wait until the next week. Ella needed to get a few more shots. We put down a deposit and left happily. But the day before we were supposed to pick up Ella, the doctor called and told us that Ella had died from an infection. My daughter and I were so sad, but we decided to keep looking the next day. We went to the public animal shelter downtown, and there were only a couple of dogs there. One of them was a oneyearold white dog named Max, and even though he was being pretty loud when we first saw him, he calmed down quickly and played with us for an hour in the visitors' room. We told the staff that we wanted him, and after filling out some forms and paying a small fee, he was ours! Everyone was so happy, especially Max!

Amazing Facts About Elf Owls
The elf owl is mostly found in the southwestern parts of the United States and Mexico. During the spring and summer seasons, it moves to Arizona and New Mexico. It returns to Mexico for the winter. The elf owl doesn't build its own nest. It lives in tree holes.
The elf owl is a yellow bird with dark wings. Its eyes are bright yellow and its feet are large. It is the smallest owl of the species, only about 12.514.5 centimeters long. It is also the world's lightest owl, weighing not more than forty grams. In general, female elf owls weigh more than male ones.
The female usually lays three eggs at a time. After the young elf owls are born, their mother will feed them with worms for up to three to four weeks. After 10 weeks, the young ones are fully grown and ready to take flight.
The elf owls are not aggressive birds. When danger comes, they will fly away in other directions, rather than staying and facing the danger or their enemies. Besides flying, the elf owl can also walk and climb like a parrot. The elf owl is most active after dusk, during the night and just before dawn. It can produce many different kinds of sounds. It can live for three to six years in the wild. If they are kept in cages, they can live for ten to fourteen years. The elf owls are now in danger because of the loss of habitat. Cutting down trees will result in lack of places for them to live.

(2017·全国卷Ⅲ)After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations—major food sources (来源) for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation (植被), which reduced plant diversity in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park's red foxes, and completely drove away the park's beavers.。
