Among the traditional clothes, qipao, a dress with a history of over 100 years, has
become a symbol of beauty and elegance of Chinese women.
Illustrator(插画师) Lu Mei, also a qipao lover, has been creating paintings of a
woman in qipao for years. Her recent book Cheongsam with beautiful illustrations tells
how the style of the dress has changed in the past 100 years.
Lu Mei has been interested in qipao since she read a book by famous writer Zhang Ailing (1920-1995). In 2007, when she was asked to draw the illustrations for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book, Lu agreed and started her research on the dress. According to some books, people first wore qipao in the late 1910s and it looked like the robes which were long and wide and only worn by men at that time. In the 1930s, the dress was made into a different style — slimmer cuts(较修身的裁剪) and higher splits(开叉).
“Nowadays qipao becomes a fashion choice for women and a symbol of traditional Chinese culture once again, but the dress is different from what it used to be. Because of the film In the Mood for Love, the dress now is much more close-fitting(紧身的),” Lu said
Lu Mei loves qipao, but she does not often wear it in her everyday life. Instead of wearing the dress, Lu hopes her readers can learn something meaningful behind the clothes.
( )6. The underlined word “elegance” means _______ in Chinese.
A. 勤劳
B. 宽
C. 优雅
( )7. We can know the following about Zhang Ailing EXCEPT that _______.
A. she was born in Shanghai
B. she died at the age of seventy-five
C. her book described qipao
( )8. Which can describe the style of qipao in the 1930s?
A. Short and slim.
B. Much more close-fitting.
C. Slimmer cuts and higher splits.
( )9. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Lu Mei thinks the culture of qipao is more meaningful.
B. To Chinese women, qipao is their favorite clothes.
C. In the Mood for Love made qipao popular and fashionable.
( )10. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To show people the beauty of qipao.
B. To encourage women to wear qipao.
C. To introduce a qipao lover to people.

Few of us have heard of Nils Bohlin, but whenever we take a car
journey, his invention makes us safer. Found in almost every modern car,
the three-point seat belt reduces(减少) our chances of death or injury(伤害)
by at least 50%. While feeling thankful to this engineer from Volvo, you
may also wonder how he came up with such a great idea.
Having worked as a plane designer before, Nils knew clearly that the pilots were willing to put on anything to keep them safe in an accident, but to his surprise, most people in the cars just didn’t want to be uncomfortable for even a minute. To improve the safety for people in the cars, he decided to find a perfect system which should be simple, effective and convenient. In the end, he invented the three-point seat belt, which has been considered as one of the greatest inventions in history.
Seat belts prevent people in the cars from serious injury in five ways.
Keep people inside. People who are thrown out from a car are four times more likely to be killed than those who stay inside.
Protect the strongest parts of the body. Seat belts are designed to fix your body at its strongest parts. For an older child and adult, these parts are the hips(臀部) and shoulders.
Spread out the force in an accident. Seat belts spread the force of the accident over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on one area, they can help you avoid serious injury. Seat belts also help keep your upper body away from the hard parts of the car if you stop suddenly or hit by another car.
Help the body to slow down. A quick speed causes injury. With the help of the seat belts, your body can have more time to slow down in an accident.
Protect your brain and spinal cord(脊柱). Seat belts are designed to protect these two key areas of the human body. Head and spinal cord injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can cause death. Therefore, it’s of great importance to protect these parts.
It takes only a few seconds to buckle up once you get in the car, but this simple action could save your life. Why wouldn’t you?
( )11. Three-point seat belts reduce chances of death or injury by at least _______.
A. 30%
B. 40%
C. 50%
( )12. Nils Bohlin invented the three-point seat belt in order to _______.
A. take a car journey quickly
B. show thanks to the engineer
C. improve the safety for people in the cars
( )13. From the passage we can learn _______.
A. seat belts can keep your knees and feet away from the hard parts of the car
B. the body has more time to slow down in an accident with the help of seat belts
C. head and spinal cord injuries might be easy to see immediately and cause death ( )14. The underlined phrase “buckle up” probably means _______ in Chinese.
A. 保持冷静
B. 克服压力
C. 系好安全带
( )15. This passage is mainly about _______.
A. how seat belts develop better
B. how seat belts are used
C. how seat belts save lives

(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Do you know that the Happy Birthday to You song is the first song sung in outer space? Apollo IX astronauts sang it on March 8, 1969. It is one of the most popular English songs of all time. Here’s the story behind it.
The song was written by two sisters from Kentucky, Mildred and Patty Smith Hill. It was first published under the title of Good Morning to All in 1893. It was used as a classroom greeting. Teachers sang it each day to welcome their students to the classroom.
The composer, Mildred Hill, was a concert pianist. Her sister Patty Smith Hill wrote the original(最初的) lyrics for the song while she was a teacher in a kindergarten in Louisville, Kentucky, where Mildred also taught.
The Hill sisters copyrighted(取得版权) their song on October 16, 1893. However, it appeared without their agreement in Robert H. Coleman’s songbook on March 4, 1924. Coleman changed part of the lyrics to say, Happy Birthday to You, although the song still had its original title. The song was then published several times over the next ten years, often with small changes in the lyrics. In 1934, when the song was sung every night in a Broadway Musical, another Hill sister, Jessica, went to court (法院) over the copyright problem of the song. She was angry about the theft of the song and the failure to pay to her sisters. She won her case. The Hill family owned the rights to the melody and had to be paid every time the song was part of a commercial(商业的) production.
The Hill sisters, who devoted their lives to educating children, could never imagine that the simple little song would continue to earn about $2 million every year.
