T he Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is the world’s most favorable form of art. When 1 was a preschooler, I was briefly taught by my grandfather to write Chinese calligraphy. Even though everything has gradually been only a blur (模糊) in my memory over the years, one thing I certainly have not lost is that I can still grip the ink brush correctly.
Imagine that someone obtains such a cherished occasion to sit down and spend a little unaccompanied time of quietness, allowing one's intellect to think freely and express out in a written script their deepest thoughts.
A piece of Xuan paper is first carefully placed on top of a desk pad. Then, use a paper- weight to hold down the Xuan paper, so it will be always
locked in the right spot. Next without any hesitation, reach for the best ink brush. Do remember to immerse (浸润) the brush with just enough ink so there won't be any ink dripping. Then start to write. While the mind unfolds, the brush sheer per stokes of Chinese character into the rhythmic motion of expressions,
In history, Chinese calligraphers have always written the script as a common way for message transmission during various audience engagements of contributors. It also makes for better cultural understanding of a different period of Chinese history. Chinese calligraphers have a variety of reasons to study the art form. For some people. practicing writing the regular script will keep the traditional culture alive. Others think it a perfect way to relax from all the daily happenings. There's still an uncountable new form of script style that has kept the art going in a way to promote the fine art of Chinese culture in our present day.
Nowadays, Chinese calligraphers strongly believe there's more than just written communication. Countless existing works display Chinese literature. They understand what it meant to become an accomplished Chinese calligrapher. It takes many years of strictly copying from the master's correct written stokes, to gain the skill in the regular script until exemplary, perfect and beyond expert level. One requirement is to know the wring structures of several Chinese script styles.
The new approach to script writing is gaining ground, especially in western countries. Inspiring Chinese calligraphers who are willing to perfect the craft tend to create new ideas to re- present the visible images. The contemporary bending of color hypothesis sets a brand-new standard for Chinese calligraphers. That makes every sort of collective portrait of Chinese characters into a well- presented masterwork of applied arts.
As much exceptional quality of diverse formed of masterpiece appears overtime. It's a reminder that in all classes of society we must pass our heritage down to the next generation so our ancestors are more than merely just a portion of history. Instead, it is never to be forgot- ten as an integral part of the culture. “A soul is essential for a country and a nation, " Chinese President Xi Jinping said. “Professionals in the sectors of culture, art, philosophy and social sciences are important soul builders.”

2. 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容在表格空白处填入适当信息。

每空不超过3个单词。

During the last twenty years there has been increasing concern with the quality of the environment. Along with air and water pollutants, noise pollution has been recognized as a serious pollutant. As noise levels have risen, the effects of noise have become more obvious.
Noise is described as unwanted sound. Causes of noise pollution include traffic, aircraft, rock bands, barking dogs, television, garbage trucks, and noise from neighbors, voices, alarms and boats. Studies show that over forty percent of Americans are disturbed at home or lose sleep because of noise pollution.
Noise has bad effects on people. Noise interferes (干扰) with human activities at home and work, and is in various ways dangerous to people’s health and well-being.
When we think, talk, listen to music, or sleep, we need quiet. Even low levels of noise can be annoying or frustrating. Sudden increases in volume can make sounds annoying. The quieter the background is, the more unpleasant a noise can be.
Noise can also make instructions or warning unclear, resulting in accidents.
Long exposure to noise levels above eighty-five decibels (分贝) can damage inner ear cells and lead to hearing loss. Noise can result in the uncontrolled fear response and can cause adrenaline (肾上腺素) to be pumped into the bloodstream, the heart rate to quicken, muscles to tense, breathing to increase, and the digestive system to slow down.
Local government has the responsibility to fight noise pollution. For example, it can regulate the speed of trains through their community. On the other hand, ad responsible citizen will never make noise pollution wherever he is.

4. Henry Ford, one of the few men that made mainstream automobiles a reality. He was born into a family of farmers who originated from
England and Ireland. Not the wealthiest of families, but not poverty-stricken either.
In his teenage years, his father had given him a timepiece which he later took to pieces just to see if he could piece it together again successfully, which he did. He then did the same with other people’s timepieces and eventually he repaired them too. Henry was also a sufferer of Dyslexia (阅读困难者), and although this was a hurdle it was not a reason to give up.
He completed an apprenticeship (学徒期) with James F. Flower & Bros, and also with the Detroit Dry Dock Company. In 1891 he met with Thomas Edison, who liked his concept of an auto-mobile, so he allowed him to use his warehouses to manufacture two vehicles. Ford was grateful but later built his own company so he could build the cars on his own terms backed by William H. Murphy and in 1899 he founded the Detroit Automobile Company.
This was short lived, however, as the vehicles produced lacked the quality and precision. And they were horribly expensive. The business went under, but it didn’t stop him. Ford went on to build the Cadillac Automobile company.
After almost failing a second time because of lack of sales and high debts, more partners came into the business and the name was changed to the Ford Motor Company. The Ford Motor Company generated around 156 billion U.S. dollars in revenue (税收) in 2019.
1. Why did the author mention the timepiece? (no more than 10 words)
2. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? (no more than 3 words)

My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words. Throughout my life, he offered advice rarely. But the words were always appropriate to the situation I was facing.
As a teen when I struggled with making sense of the world around me, he said, “All things are relative.” He taught me the right view of the world.
When I was offered the opportunity to be a manager of an organization as an undergraduate student, I asked him for advice because he was a senior manager of a large company. His advice was simple, “Only when you become the manager can you have a vision for how you can make the organization better; management isn’t about power and it’s about leadership.” I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my team but also to have leading ability. When I was feeling down, he explained, “Think that you make the wrong choices in life, sometimes.”
My dad is 86 now, living on his own and enjoying life while struggling with the challenges that aging brings. He keeps a positive attitude despite long pain and the losses that come in life. Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone, and he shares the joys of my young family. As I tell him how we’re heading off cycling or on a trip or out to play tennis, now his typical response is, “Do it while you can.” This is very important. We can’t be sure of the future. My father’s advice is like the ancient dictum(格言)of “ carpe diem”— seize the day and enjoy it to the fullest.
My dad rarely “lectured me”. He trusted me, and helped me when I needed help. His patience and wisdom have been true gifts in my life. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. It’s enough to “just get me started”.
1. Why did the author’s dad tell him “All things are relative.”? (No more than 10 words)
2. What qualities should a manager have according to the author? (No more than 5 words)
3. What is the purpose of the author’s father talking with him on the phone every day? (No more than 10 words)
4. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (No more than 10 words)
5. How do you feel about the ancient dictum of “carpe diem”? (No more than 20 words)

How to Survive a Stampede (蜂拥)
At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede accident that occurred in Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling (踩踏) accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
1
If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out.
Keep an eye on the crowd.
Be aware of the general atmosphere of the crowd, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
2
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled. Move in the same direction of the crowd, keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.
3
If you fall, get up quickly. If you can’t keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up. Do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.
A. Look for exits.
B. Protect your head.
C. Avoid any choke points.
D. Keep pace with the crowd.

A.Slow Down Your Life
B.Escape Now and Then
C.Separate Your Actions
D.Allow Yourself to Be Weak
E.Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying “No”
F.Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect
How to Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.
1. ________
When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.
2. ________
The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner.
If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it's not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so
many work assignments in your private life or your working life.
3. ________
“I can handle stress” is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with—until one day they break.
Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These signals can come from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases.
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, “I can't manage that.”
4. ________
“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier.” This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, corners, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.
Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous:driving a car, crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
5. ________
Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired(some people fall asleep after a few miles).

Going to a boarding school is a new experience full of excitement of the unknown. Socialization is a big thing for students and it is common to feel a little uncomfortable going into a situation where everyone is a stranger. Y ou may probably miss your friends from former school. Trying actively to find new friends can help ease the feeling of being lonely. A boarding school is a great chance to make new lifelong friends. The question is: How?
1
Y ou may find you have lots of things in common with your roommate, but even if you are completely different from each other, with a little effort and understanding, the two of you may become best friends.
2
If you leave your door open, this shows that you welcome visitors. As a result, people will naturally stop in and say hello. Closed doors are not likely to bring many visitors and those who stay locked up in their rooms may give others the impression of being cold. Other students will be less likely to stop in and build a new friendship.
3
Getting involved in organized socialization is a great way to meet new people. It also helps you get more familiar with the campus. By staying active in school groups such as clubs and organizations, you can meet lots of people with whom you share common interests.
4

12. Y ou want to go vegan to help the planet, but it is your parents who are paying for the shopping. Y ou think trains are better than planes when
traveling. 1 Young people are some of the world’s most powerful climate leaders and want rapid action to tackle the problem.
2 But the power to act is often still in the hands of older people, including parents. Big changes are difficult, especially when they involve
other people. Where do you begin?
Eating less meat is one of the best ways to reduce our impact on the planet. Teach the Parent is a campaign that encourages these conversations between generations. It was started by young people frustrated with the lack of international climate action and their feelings of powerlessness. Even if your first talk with your parent goes badly, you should keep going. 3 If you bring it up every so often, it shapes your parent’s attitudes in the long term.
How we travel is a major source of carbon emissions, but switching from driving or lying can potentially limit family holidays and cost more.
Present a solution rather than just a problem. 4 For example, saying “let’s do this thing instead” is really a good way to communicate. People talk about how expensive trains are, but think about what the carbon emissions from taking a plane mean in the long term for us.
Radically reducing what we buy and throw away can improve our carbon footprint, but it can be time-consuming and difficult. Advise your parents to reduce food waste and think more carefully about what they buy. Be well-informed about the things you want your family to start changing so they can see you care and have done some research. It’s important to not go into it expecting your parents to change their whole lives. 5 .
Taking action as an individual means you have managed to feel a lot more in control of your future.
A.That makes a lot of sense.
B.Big lifestyle changes take time.
C.Small things can make a difference.
D.It’s a big bother for you and your parents.
E.Give your parents options for something fun or exciting.
F.The conversations can be challenging at times.
G.However, your dad books the summer holiday.

13. There’s a reason why so many people love running early in the morning. 1 Not only do you begin your day more relaxed and refreshed,
but you’ve already started things of with an accomplishment. If you think you’re ready to take advantage of the benefits of a morning run, here are five suggestions from the professionals.
●Find a friend, and be gentle with yourself
Finding a partner to run with will give you someone to be responsible for, and make it much harder to blow off the run. It’s also important to remember that this is a process, and you can’t expect to do it perfectly from the beginning. 2 “Once you get into the habit, it becomes natural and actually jump starts your day,” says Sheri Piers, top American finisher at the 2012 Boston Marathon.
●Embrace the movement
“The first few steps or blocks will be tough in the morning. They always are,” says Dr. Jordan Metzl, who has over 32 marathon finishes under his belt. With a practice of more than 20, 000 patients, Metzl’s days are jam-packed, so early morning runs are a must. 3 “Sometimes you have to just do it, and remember that the motivation will come later.” he says.
●Stay warm
4 “If I go to bed in my sports wear, all I need to do is throw on the outer layers and head out the door. At least that takes away some of the
inconvenience,” says Tina Muir, a half-marathoner. She also leaves her alarm on the other side of the room to help push herself up.
● 5
“I view waking up early like tearing off a Band-Aid,” says Michele Gonzalez, a running coach. “It’s gonna hurt for a bit.” Her advice is relatively simple. “Y ou just have to set the alarm early and start doing it,” she says. “After a few days, you’ll be tired earlier at night and will start going to bed earlier. This makes the early alarm feel a bit more manageable.”。
