A new study has found that the best way to make yourself feel happier is to think of something good that happened to you the day before.
Volunteers who were asked to remember a pleasant event from past 24 hours began to feel happier right away. Other activities such as saying “Thank you” and smiling also made volunteers feel happier, but not as much.
Professor Richard Wiseman of Hertfordshire University planned the study. He got 26,000 people to go online to try out a few different activities to make them feel happier. They were told to be nice, remember a pleasant event from the day before, give thanks or smile for 15 seconds twice a day. The volunteers did these activities for one week.

A friend and I were standing in line at the grocery store the other day, and I was telling her how lazy my children were. I had come in from work that morning, and like most times, my house was wrecked.
“I believe children nowadays are just out for what they can get. They can never help keep our house clean.” I said, feeling unhappy.
“Do you know how happy you are?” a woman behind us asked. “I would love to go home and find my house a mess. I wouldn’t mind my floor being dirty. Nor would I mind the dirty clothes being piled high. I wouldn’t even mind anyone talking about my dirty home. I would love it. I would love to kick my way through the house just to get to my kids and be able to hug them, kiss them and tell them how much I love them. You see, my two children were killed in an accident. My house stays clean; my clothes stay put up; the dishes are done.”
“There are no fingerprints on my walls. There are no sounds of arguing, either. So you see, you are very lucky. I would give anything to be going thro ugh what you are now! How I’d love to be able to hold my kids, wipe away their tears and share their dreams! I wouldn’t care how my house looked. I would be happy just to have them.”

It all starts with a tree. In fact, it starts with several trees. Since the first modern guitars were made in northern Spain over 150 years ago, craftspersons have known the wood to be used is important in making a guitar.
Every guitar is made of several different kinds of wood. Each piece is carefully chosen and then cut to fit the part of the guitar for which it is designed. The most important part of a guitar is the soundboard--the piece of wood with a large hole that lies under the strings(弦,线). Guitar makers are careful to make the soundboard just the right shape and thickness. Then they fix stripes (长条)of wood across the inside in a special pattern, which helps strengthen the soundboard and improves the tone of the guitar.
Wood for the curvy (弯曲的) sides of the guitar must be soaked (浸湿) in water and bent over a hot iron pipe. When all the pieces of the guitar are ready, they are carefully stuck together with glue. Special woodworking tools are used to shape and smooth the neck of the guitar. The craftsperson must make sure that the neck is perfectly centered over the soundboard.
Then it is time to use varnish(亮光漆). This brings out the beauty of the wood. Varnish also improves the sound of the guitar but too much varnish makes the guitar sound flat and dull.
Finally guitar strings are attached and tightened to make just the right musical tones. Then it’s time to play a song.

B. The sound of the guitar will be flat and dull.
C. The tone of the guitar will be improved
D. A guitar will become thin

Physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves mental fitness(健康). Exercise strengthens key organs such as the lungs and the heart, and helps a person to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: “Fir st, you need to work out your current level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you to become more healthy.”
Dr Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and very often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not participate in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr Lopez, overweight teenagers should keep active. “Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories.”
Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” said Dr Lopez.
The same principle applies to active teenagers. Dr Lopez recommends one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day on stretching and bending activities. “These are rea lly important in order to prevent muscular injuries,” Dr Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be built into the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.

If you have decided to take some English courses in the UK, there are some exams that you have to take to determine which classes you should be taking. The first exam that you have to take is the Key English Test, which determines how well you can handle speaking English on a day-to-day basis along with written English skills.
The KET has three parts. They are the basic reading and writing test, the listening exam and the speaking exam. Once you have passed this, you can take the PET exam, which stands for the Preliminary English Test. This test is for people who already have both basic oral and written skills.
If you can read such items as newspapers, signs, magazines and books, you may be ready to take the next step. Try practicing your writing skills as well and when you think you have good enough writing skills, take this test. There are three sections to this test, the reading, writing and spoken English comprehension skills.
Once you have successfully passed the PET test, you can then move on to the more advanced classes and tests, like the FCE, which is the First Certificate Exam. This exam is harder and more advanced than the other tests. If your job depends on English speaking or writing, then this test is a must to pass. You will need to have passed the last two tests in order to take this one. You will also need to have more of a background when it comes to the English language. By passing the FCE, you have showed that your English speaking ability is of high level.
73. By writing the passage, the writer wants to _____.
A. persuade more people to take English courses in the UK
B. explain how to prepare for language tests of different levels in the UK
C. tell us some advice on how to deal with various tests
D. introduce several tests you have to take in order to take English courses in the UK
74. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The P ET doesn’t require good speaking skills.
B. The FCE is harder than the KET and the PET.
C. More and more people are taking English courses in the UK.
D. The FCE is only for people whose career depends on English speaking.
75. In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?

W: I am so tired. Maybe I should drop out before it kills me.
M: Now, look, Kate. We all began to study it not so long ago, uh … just for a couple of months. Everyone began from reading “A, B, C …” just like you. Everything is difficult in the beginning to everyone.
W: I know that, Mr. Black. But I can’t focus on it.

M: Why do you have to work so hard?
W: I’m planning to start a school, so I’m trying to save as much money as possible.
M: What kind of school?
W: A music school for disabled children. I think they have the right to receive an education just like healthy children. At the moment there are very few such schools in my country. (Text 10) (W)
Until recently, almost everyone thought that growth and progress would make the world a better place. They believed that something new was always better than something old. So countries spent billions of dollars on science to develop new ways of making things and doing work. However, new technology is the main cause of the world’s problems. One such problem has come from the appearance of the car. In some crowded cities, the car has polluted the air so badly that people get sick just from breathing it. Waste from factories is another example of how new technology is hurting the earth. When some waste chemicals are put into the sea, it can hurt or kill animals and fish. It’s time that we did something. When the problems get worse, they will not affect just a few countries.
They will be world problems that affect us all.

It is commonly accepted that using electronic dictionaries has many advantages. Those who are in favor of this idea think that it is more convenient to press some keys on the machine. However, in my view, electronic dictionaries are not good. First of all, electronic dictionaries do not contain as much information as a qualified traditional dictionary. Furthermore, some explanations in them are so simple that they can certainly cause misunderstanding. Thirdly, a lazy attitude toward language learning is always most inefficient in the long run.
In a word, a language learner should have a good dictionary on hand, and electronic dictionaries can’t take the place of the traditional ones. By choosing and using a good dictionary, we will improve a great deal in English study.。
