The word "diet" refers what you eat. It is very important to have a balanced diet. That means you should cat many different kinds of foods. For example, you should eat foods that are rich in protein(蛋白质), such as meat, milk, nuts and beans. You should also eat foods that are rich in carbohydrates(碳水化合物), such as cereal, bread noodles, fruits, and vegetables. And your body also needs a certain amount of fat. Fats are found in foods, such as eggs and milk.
To guide you eating a balanced diet, the U.S. government has created a Food Guide Pyramid. It is probably the best guideline you can use to eat well.
In its Food Guide Pyramid, the U.S. government measures food in terms of servings. But what exactly serving? That depends on the top of the food you are eating, Foods contain vitamins and minerals that your body needs. By eating a certain number of servings a day of different foods, you can make sure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. What counts as a serving? The following is an example: in the group of fruit, I medium apple, banana, or orange counts as a serving; 1/2 cup of chopped fruit or 3/4 cup of fruit juice also counts as a serving.
Food amounts are usually measured by the gram or by the ounce. A gram (g) is a unit of mass in the metric system. An ounce is a unit of weight in the system we use in U.S. Food package usually list the weight of the food in grams and in ounces. One slice of white bread has a mass of about twenty-five grams and weighs a little less than one ounce. The amount of energy in food is measured by the calorie(卡路里). For example, a slice of white bread has sixty-five calories.
What about food that isn’t sold in packages? Do you have to measure everything before you put it into your mouth? Not really. Nutrition books and cookbooks often have tables that list how many calories and grams are in foods. Even some fast-food restaurants list number of calories in their food.
