When Yuan Jianglei graduated from college in2014in Southwest China with a degree in broadcast journalism,he decided to go to the West-African country of Benin to be a volunteer teacher. After two years teaching Chinese at Confucius Institute in Benin, one of the most underdeveloped countries in Africa, he made another big decision:to return home to China on a bicycle.
In September2016,he set out on the journey,a journey that would cover16,000kilometers across16 different countries,in360days."It was an easy decision for me,"said Yuan,27,"because I wanted to see the world,to live the story and to tell my own story."He got just what he set out to experience-breathtaking natural beauty and friendly people. But it hasn't been an easy journey. There were several times on the road when he questioned what he was doing, especially when cycling through rough areas.
When he was cycling in Mauritania,he had only three days left before his visa expired(失效).So he had no option but to take the iron ore train and stay overnight in the open air.The second day when he woke up and realized his face was covered with dust,he wondered if it was all worth it."But,to be honest, this thought just lasted for10seconds.When I recalled that memory of staying under the stars, the experience was quite unique,"he recalled.
Yuan said during his journey countless local people helped him along the way.Even though sometimes they didn't speak French or English, there was no problem communicating with smiles or simple greetings."When I was cycling in Burkina Faso,I got serious malaria. The locals helped me and drove me with a motorcycle to the hospital. That's how I recovered in just four hours'time."
Yuan plans to return to Benin after the Spring Festival to bring back the donations he raised. With the money,he is planning to help install solar power stations and water wells for local communities.

Fears that robots could take the jobs of humans may be still far from us after Britain’s first robot shop assistant“Fabio”was fired after a week of confusing customers.
Fabio was programmed with directions to hundreds of items in a flagship store and could cheer up customers with his pleasant greetings, jokes and offers of hugs. But within just a few days, the robot disappointed customers after giving unhelpful advice such as‘it’s in the alcohol section’when asked where to find beer.
Later he was placed where he was only allowed to offer samples of pork, but Fabio started to alarm customers who went out of their way to avoid him.Luisa Margiotta said.“Conversations didn’t always go
well.It was not able to move around the shop and direct customers to the items they were looking for.“Instead it just gave a general location.”
However when Franco Margiotta told the little robot they would no longer hire him,Fabio asked:“Are you angry?”and some staff were reduced to tears when he was packed away and shipped back to Heriot-Watt.“One of the things we didn’t expect was the people working in the shop became quite attached to it.”Margiotta said,“When we had to pack it up and put it back in the box one of them started crying.”,“It was good in a way”,Margiotta said,“because we thought the opposite would happen and they would feel threatened by it because it was competing for their job.”
When asked whether robots could one day replace shop workers,Luisa Margiotta was sceptical.“We find our customers love a personal interaction because our staff members know our regulars very well and can have conversations on a daily basis, and I doubt robots would be able to fulfil this.”“It is possible,I believe, that robots could assist with roles such as warehouse(仓库)-based tasks, but I doubt they will ever wipe out the need for human interaction.”

The well-known U.S.coffee shop Starbucks just opened its largest store in the land of tea:China! The Shanghai Starbucks is2,700square meters and employs more than400people.
But is coffee good for us?
There have been many studies on the health benefits of coffee.Recently, researchers at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine in Great Britain looked at results from201observational coffee studies and17clinical(临床的)trials of coffee. They discovered that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of heart and liver disease and some cancers. However, their findings are uncertain. The researchers could not prove coffee was the cause of these lowered risks. One of the researchers Robin Poole notes that their research included mainly observational data. Therefore, they could not prove any cause and effect relationship. In observational uncontrolled study, researchers simply watch what happens to a series of people in one group. There is no control group.
Still, researchers found that the benefits of moderate coffee drinking seem to outweigh the risks.Their report says that drinking coffee"was more often associated with benefit than harm."But he warns that the coffee story is much more complicated. He advises people to not drink more than four cups a day.And not everyone should drink so much coffee.
Researchers found that:
-Too much coffee during pregnancy(孕期)can be dangerous.
-People,especially women, whose bones break easily should limit how much coffee they drink.
-People with abnormal heart beat patterns are advised to drink coffee without caffeine.
In addition, the scientists point out that the research was only about coffee.Yet many coffee drinkers don't just drink coffee. They put sugar into it.They add milk or cream. They may have a baked treat on the side.
Poole warns that to get the full health benefits of coffee, keep it simple and don't eat the pastries(糕点) that often come with a cup of coffee.
33.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advertise the coffee shop Starbucks.
B.To present the findings of a research.
C.To persuade people to drink coffee.
D.To compare coffee and tea.
34.Why were the findings of the research uncertain?
A.The research was based only on clinical trials.
B.The research was an uncontrolled study.
C.The samples(样本)were not enough.
D.More than one group took part in the research.
35.What do we know about coffee drinking?
A.Proper amounts of coffee reduce many disease risks.
B.Coffee is healthier if drunk together with cream.

When you live in an area for a while, you get used to its climate. You know about how cold and wet it will be in March and how warm in August.36Then big changes in temperature and rainfall will take place. One of these is called El Nino.

39People,however,didn’t understand what was happening. It was only in the1960s that scientists found definite proof that warming in the Pacific affected weather puters are continuing to collect information about how an El Nino works. We know, for instance, that the condition happens every two or seven ually it lasts for several months, though sometimes it can last for years.
And its effect can vary:some El Ninos are much stronger than others.Often an El Nino year is followed by one with a condition called La Nina.40Consequently,the weather patterns of El Nino tend to be opposite.
