London—coffee protects mice from radiation and could get the same way in humans, according to Indian scientists.
Scientist at India’s Bhabha Atomic Research Center discovered that mice injected with caffeine(咖啡因)remained alive after high doses(剂量)of normally lethal radiation.
Although the study was limited to animals, Kachadillilli George, head of the research team, believes the findings could have implications(something suggested)for humans.
“It does suggest that coffee might have some beneficial effects in protecting against radiation,〞he told New Scientist magazine late last month.
George and his team injected 471 mice with caffeine and left them uncovered to grays of gamma radiation(伽玛射线),enough to kill most mice. But 25 days later 70 percent of the mice that had received 80 milligrams(毫克)of caffeine per kilogram of body weight were still alive.

When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers, I often feel like cutting and keeping it. But just as I am about to do so, I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done when I find out the result that inevitably〔必然地〕 causes my regret.
Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving (worthy) your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future is unpredictable — the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice opportunities and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative (choice) to the other.
In fact, that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and
give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher’s (哲学家) remarks: “ When one door shuts, another opens in life. 〞 So a passive choice may not be a bad one.
Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life’s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for everyone. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you.
66. The main idea of the passage is________.
A. where there is a will, there is a way
B. cutting newspapers gives us a lesson
C. all roads lead to Rome
D. an equal chance is provided for everyone.
67. After reading the passage, we may know the writer is a person of ______.
A. observation B . curiosity C. encouragement D. consideration
68. The word “fix〞in “you are caught in a fix〞 in paragraph 2 refers to ______.
A. difficult situation
B. your preference of one choice
C. what is left behind
D. two things are to be done at the same time
69. The underlined part in the passage tells us _________.
A. life is like cutting newspapers
B. we can’t kill two bird s with one stone
C. life sometimes changes completely
D. it is often difficult to make a choice in our life
70. Which of the statements below is true according to the passage?
A. Cutting newspapers is a hard job.
B. When you are caught in a fix, you have met two good things.
C. There must be a way that is better than the other.

It was the first time I went to the countryside. At nine in the morning I started with my classmates. On the way we saw many rice fields and trees on both sides of the road. Factories, shops and schools have been built in many villages. Between ten and twelve we visited ten families. We were told that many farmers had grown vegetables and flowers, and they became rich. Some families bought color TVs and motorbikes. The life of the farmers is much better than before. It was said that some American friends would come to visit their village.
Although we were very tired, we had a wonderful time. I will remember this unforgettable experience. I hope the farmers' life will be better and better.。
