it’s more than some highfalutin concept (浮夸的概念) that
businessmen like to throw around. It’s a real aspect of
modern life, as evidenced by the rise of the profitable online
teaching business.
Some tech-savvy teachers are making a fortune without
stepping out of their homes. Xie Mingbo, who quit his job

development released in January, 110 million Chinese
Internet users tried online education in 2015.
A separate investigation, conducted by Beijing-based
Tianto Info Consulting, predicted that the online education

In 1921 Charles William Paddock was regarded as the “fastest human being” in the world. In the 1920 Olympic Games in Belgium Paddock won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash and a silver medal in the 200-meter dash.
One day Paddock visited a school in Cleveland, Ohio and spoke to the students. A young black child listened attentively as this famous athlete talked. “What do you want to be?” Paddock asked. “You name it and then you will become just that,” he said. That young man decided that he too wanted to be the fastest human being on earth.
He shared his dream with Charles Riley, his junior high track coach. Coach Riley said to him, “It’s great to have a dream, son, but to achieve your goal, it is necessary to build a ladder (梯子) to it. On the ladder you must have steps that will support the weight of all you hope to achieve. The first step on your dream ladder must be determination and the second dedication. The third step is discipline! The fourth is attitude!”
However, the possibilities were against this young man. He was a poor black man who received no scholarship to college. When traveling with his team he slept and ate in “black only” hotels and restaurants. He won eight individual NCAA championships at Ohio State University but he was not allowed to live on the college campus.
In spite of cruel racial prejudice (种族歧视) and many other difficulties, he kept on working hard. In 1936 at the Berlin Olympics he won four gold medals. He made such an impression on Germany that even Adolph Hitler rose and waved his hand at this great runner. He was chosen for
the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1970; he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 by Gerald Ford and the Congressional Gold Medal by George H. W. Bush on March 28, 1990. In 1984 a street in Berlin was renamed for him. Two U.S. postage stamps have been issued in his honor. His name? Jesse Owens.
58. When did the boy decide to become the fastest human being?
A. Before Paddock came to visit his school.
B. While he was listening to Paddock’s speech at his school.
C. When he was watching Paddock running in the Olympics.
D. After he talked to Charles Riley, his junior high track coach.
59. When the boy shared his dream with his coach, the coach .
A. did n’t think much of it
B. considered it impossible for him to realize it
C. offered him some useful advice
D. listed some difficulties that he might meet with
60. To the boy, the greatest difficulty in achieving his dream might be that .
A. he didn’t have a strong ladder
B. he couldn’t get support from his coach
C. he couldn’t afford the training
D. he was looked down upon as a black
61. What can we learn about Jesse Owens from the passage?
A. Gerald Ford gave him freedom in the year of 1976.
B. The name of a street in Berlin was changed to honor him.
C. Two German postage stamps have been issued in honor of him.
D. Adolph Hitler awarded him a gold medal at the Berlin Olympics.

Do you think telling lies, whether a little or a lot, isn’t that big of a deal? Well, that depends on the situation. If someone asks, “Does this dress make me look fat?” we might all lie somewhat. We might say, “Of course not. You look great.” Lying to spare someone’s feelings is one thing. Lying to destroy someone’s character or fame is another.
“What’s really terrible is that you can’t undo a big lie,” says a minister we’ll call Morgan. “I promise if you go house to house to say, ‘I feel terrible I wrongly accused my neighbor of stealing,’ the lie will spread like a fire fueled by gasoline. You can’t call back a lie very easily.”
Morgan goes on to say that lies have hurt people more than guns.
“We have a grandfather in our church whose former son-in-law told people the man treated his own children cruel ly,” Morgan says. “To this day, we don’t know whether it is true or not. I would tend to doubt it, but I can’t take a chance, especially if he is working with young people in our church.”
Disarming someone who lies is tough. It’s like disarming someone who’s prepared to fire. That’s why our society is full of people who are forced to cover up the lies of other people.
“I worked with a man who was stealing money from our employer,” says a man we’ll call Fred. “He was so goo d at lying and doctoring the books (做假账) that it would have taken an FBI agent to stop him. I worried, ‘If I turned him in, and he got out of the trouble, my career at our company would come to an end.’”
Fred says he came up with a plan to drop hints (暗示) to the company owner. “I found printed materials on monitoring possibly dishonest employees. I started mailing them to the company owner without leaving my name. Then one day, over lunch, I told my boss he should have the books checked carefully. He go t the hint.”
Fred told us that when the books were checked, the dishonest co-worker tried to blame him for the errors. However, Fred told the company owner he had been dropping hints for some time. The boss got the picture. Fred kept his job. The dishonest guy was fired.
Figuring out how to make a liar public takes work. It can be done, but you might have to move at the pace of a turtle. The slower you move, the more control you will have. You have to give others time to take in the truth.
62. The underline d phrase “spare someone’s feelings” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by .
A. destroy someone’s feelings
B. avoid hurting someone
C. put someone in a bad mood
D. express someone’s ideas
63. Which of the following can be used to conclude Paragraph 2?
A. It’s no use crying over spilt milk.
B. Every man has his faults.
C. There is no smoke without fire.
D. Pride goes before a fall.
64. How does the author develop this passage?
A. By listing numbers.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples.
D. By following order of time.
65. What can we know from the passage?
A. It was true that the grandfather treated his own children cruelly.
B. It is not difficult to persuade a dishonest man into telling the truth.
C. Fred’s boss believed the dishonest employee’s words and fired Fred.
D. To make a liar public, we should figure out effective ways in advance.
D
There are four pearl dealers in our town of La Paz. About a week after my father had cut the pearl, the four men came to our home. They came early in the afternoon, dressed in their best black suits and carrying a scale and calipers (卡尺) and their money in a bag. When word got around that the dealers were going to buy the great black pearl, a crowd followed them and stood outside our gate.
The four men wore serious faces and they put their scale and calipers on the table and their brown bag as well. They sat down and folded their hands and said nothing. Then my father said. “The bag is very small, gent lemen. I doubt that it holds enough money to buy the great Pearl of Heaven.”
The four dealers did not like this. One of them, named Martin, was big and shaped like a barrel and had small white hands. “I have heard that the pearl is the size of a grapefruit,” he said, “If so, we have more money than we need. For as you know, the large ones are of little value.” “They do not live long, these monsters,” said Palomares, who was as fat as Martin. “They often die or become dull before a year passes.” “And so do many of the small ones,” my father said. “Like the pink one Palomares sold us last month.” Palomares shrugged his shoulders.
“Before I show the Pearl of Heaven,” my father said, “I will tell you the price. It is twenty thousand pesos, no more and no less.”
My father went out of the room and came back with the pearl wrapped in a piece of white velvet. He laid it on the table in front of the four dealers. The great pearl caught the light, gathered it and softened it into a moon of dark fire. None of the dealers spoke for a moment or two.
Then Martin said, “It is as I feared, more like a grapefruit than a pearl.” “It’s a monster all right,” Palomares said. “The kind that often has a brief life and is very hard to sell.” One of the dealers who had not spoken clea red his throat and said, “But still we will make an offer.” The other dealers nodded seriously. “Ten thousand pesos,” said Martin. Palomares grasped the pearl and studied it. “I think that I see a flaw (瑕疵),” he said after a long time. “Ten thousand is too much.” The great pearl was passed around to the other dealers and they all turned it in their hands. As last Martin used the calipers and placed the pearl on the scale. “His readings were the same as I had made almost. Eleven thousand pesos,” he said. My father answered, “In your lives you have never seen a pearl like this one, nor will you.” “Twelve thousand,” said Palomares.
For most of an hour the price the dealers offered went up two hundred and fifty pesos at a time until the figure reached the sum of fifteen thousand pesos.
“Then,” said my father, “I shall take the great pearl to Mexico City and ask twice that amount and sell it to dealers who know its true worth.” Palomares picked up the pearl and put it down. “If you remember,” he said, “you made th e long journey to the City of Mexico once before. And what did you find there? You found that the dealers are not so generous (慷慨的) with their money as we are here in La Paz. And you came home after the long journey with your tail between your legs.”
My fa ther stopped pacing and signed to me. “Go to the church,” he said, “and bring Father Gallardo. Whatever he is doing, see that he comes. Go quickly.”
Everybody fell silent as we came in. Then my father turned to the priest and bowed. “Here is the Pearl of H eaven,” he said. “My son and I give it to you so that you may give it to the Madonna, our beloved Lady-of-the-Sea, to hold and keep forever.”
66. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Martin felt fearful the moment he saw the shape of the great Pearl of Heaven.
B. Martin held the opinion that the larger the pearl was, the more value it would have.
C. My father would accept somewhere around twenty thousand pesos for the great pearl.
D. My father didn’t believe the four dealers had brought enough money for the great pearl.
67. What did the writer’s father mean by saying that he would take the pearl to Mexico City?
A. He and the dealers in Mexico City had agreed on a certain price.
B. He wanted to trick the four dealers into accepting what he had charged.
C. He knew that the great pearl would show its true worth in Mexico City.
D. He didn’t know the true value and would turn to dealers in Mexico City.
68. From the underlined sentences by Palomares, we can infer that .
A. my father had never been to the City of Mexico before
B. the dealers in Mexico City bought the rare pearl at a high price
C. the dealers in Mexico City were more generous than those in La Paz
D. my father once took a rare pearl to Mexico City but the long trip was a failure

A. The church got the great Pearl of Heaven for free.
B. Madonna offered the highest price and got the pearl.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the coming Reading-to-Writing competition that I signed up for.
Aimed at arousing students’ interest in reading and improving our writing skills, a Reading-to-Writing competition is to be held this October. Any senior high school student in our city can participate in it. Firmly believing that reading can broaden my horizons and writing can sharpen my mind, I, a second language learner, always attach great importance to polishing reading and writing skills.
In preparation for the competition, I have made several plans for this summer vacation. Firstly, I mean to read more magazines and newspapers. Can you recommend some suitable ones to me? Secondly, when coming across amazing sentence patterns, I will take notes and try to recite them. Does it make sense if I want to better my writing? Last but not least, I intend to write more articles and e-mail them to you. Would you please help me correct them?
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

W: Yes, that’s right. I love the beach, the sunshine, and the fish and chips here.
Text 4
W:Here’s a ten-dollar bill. Giv e me one ticket for tonight’s show, please.
M: Sure. Here’s your ticket and your three dollars change. (4)
Text 5
W: It’s been raining a lot these days. Do you like the rain, Brent?
M: I don’t like it when it always rains like this. I enjoy it if it rains once a week…but never on the weekends! (5) You know we have to cancel our football match again.
Text 6
W: So, you can’t come to get me?
M: Sorry, but I have to attend an important meeting with my workmate that day. Don’t worry. My brother Mark will meet you at the airport. (6)
W: Uh, well, what does your brother look like?
M: Well, he’s very tall, he has short light brown hair, and he’s pretty thin. (7) He usually wears a white baseball cap with crazy-looking red shoes. I mean, you can’t miss him.
W: All right.
Text 7
M: Helen, I want to move into the dormitory(宿舍).
W: What’s wrong? You don’t want to get along well with Allen anymore?
M: No, it’s just that the house rent is going up and I can’t afford it anymore. (8)What’s more, campus is a little far from here.
W: Well, who will be your new roommate?
M: Andrew. He’s easy-going and always does well on his exams. (9) I can ask him for help with my classes.
Text 8
M: What do you think of this clothing store?
W: I love it! The only problem is that it’s extremely expensive.
M: Don’t worry. I’ve decided that for your birthday, I’m going to take you shopping for a new
dress here.
W: Really? The last time we did that was before our wedding. (10)I thought you hated shopping. (11)
M: I do, (11)and that’s why you should appreciate this gift!
W: That’s really nice of you! Let’s go in and try some things on.
M: How about this red dress? I think it would really suit you.
W: I don’t think this color is quite right for me. Do they have the same dress in white in a size 8?
(12)
M: Let’s see…they’ve got one in blue, pink, black…and white. Here you are.
W: This is perfect!

W: It’s getting dark very early these days. Summer is certainly long gone. (13)
M: You’re right, and it’s just going to keep getting darker as the days get shorter.
W: In the summer, it stayed light out until almost 10:00 p.m., but now the sun sets around 6:30 every night. (13) (14) I don’t like it. (13)
M: I get up at 5:00 every morning and the sun doesn’t rise until 6:00 a.m. I drive to work in the dark and then I drive home in the dark, too. (15)It makes me feel like there’s never any sun at all.
W: That sounds terrible. At least I get to wake up at 7:00 in the morning. I get home around 5:00 p.m., so it’s still light for about an hour and a half.
M: I heard that in some places in the far north, it’s dark for twenty out of twenty-four hours a day in the late fall!
W: I could never live in a place like that.
Text 10
One day, a girl walked into the woods to pick flowers and got lost. (17) After a while, she came upon a house where three children lived. The front door was open, so she went inside. (18) As soon as she walked into the kitchen, she smelled something wonderful. On the table were three pieces of cake. One was chocolate, one was blueberry, and one was red. The girl, feeling very hungry, sat down at the table. First, she tasted the piece of chocolate cake, but it was too sweet. Then she tried the blueberry cake, but it was too plain. Finally, she tried the red cake and it was perfect, so she ate it all. (19) After she was done, she became tired, so she went upstairs and soon fell asleep. (20) She awoke to voices coming from the kitchen. “Someone has eaten my cake!” two little girls said. Then a boy shouted, “Someone has eaten my whole cake!” The girl got scared, so she jumped out the window, landed in the grass, ran away, and never went back to the woods again.。
