Unit 3 The Rite of SpringArthur Miller1.I have never understood why we keep a garden and why over 36 years ago when I bought myfirst house in the country, I started digging up a patch for vegetables before doing anything else. When you think how easy and cheap, relatively, it is to buy a bunch of carrots or beets, why raise them? And root crops especially are hard to tell apart, when store-bought, from our own. There is a human instinct at work here, a kind of back-breaking make-believe that has no reality. Besides, I don't particularly like eating vegetables. I'd much rather eat something juicy and fat. Like hot dogs.2.Now, if you could raise hot dogs outside your window, you'd really have something you couldjustify without a second's hesitation. As it is, though, I cannot deny that when April comes I find myself going out to lean on the fence and look at that miserable plot of land, resolving with all my rational powers not to plant it again. But inevitably a morning arrives when, just as I am awakening, a scent wafts through the window, something like earth-as-air, a scent that seems to come up from the very center of this planet. And the sun means business, suddenly, and has a different, deeper yellow in its beams on the carpet. The birds begin screaming hysterically, thinking what I am thinking—the worms are deliciously worming their way through the melting soil.3.It is not only pleasure sending me back to stare at that plot of soil, it is really conflict. Thequestion is the same each year—what method should we use? The last few years we put 36-inch-wide black plastic between the rows, and it worked perfectly, keeping the soil moist in dry times and weed-free.4.But black plastic looks so industrial, so unromantic, that I have gradually moved over to haymulch. We cut a lot of hay and, as it rots, it does improve the soil's Composition. Besides, it looks lovely, and comes to us free.5.Keeping a garden makes you aware of how delicate, bountiful, and easily ruined the surfaceof this little planet is. In that 50-by-70-foot patch there must be a dozen different types of soil.Tomato won't grow in one part but loves another, and the same goes for the other crops. I suppose if you loaded the soil with chemical fertilizer these differences would be less noticeable, but I use it sparingly and only in rows right where seeds are planted rather than broadcast over the whole area. I'm not sure why I do this beyond the saving in fertilizer and my unwillingness to aid the weeds.6.The attractions of gardening, I think, at least for a certain number of gardeners, are neuroticand moral. Whenever life seems pointless and difficult to grasp, you can always get out in the garden and get something done. Also, your paternal or maternal instincts come into play because helpless living things are depending on you, require training and encouragement and protection from enemies. In some cases, as with beans and cucumbers, your children—as it were—begin to turn upon you in massive numbers, growing more and more each morning and threatening to follow you into the house to strangle you in their vines.7.Gardening is a moral occupation, as well, because you always start in spring resolved to keepit looking neat this year, just like the pictures in the catalogues. But by July, you once again face the chaos of unthinned carrots, lettuce and beets. This is when my wife becomes—openly now—mistress of the garden. A consumer of vast quantities of vegetables, she does the thinning and hand-cultivating of the tiny plants. Squatting, she patiently moves down each row selecting which plants shall live and which she will cast aside.8.At about this time, my wife's 86-year-old mother, a botanist, makes her first visit to the garden. She looks about skeptically. Her favorite task is binding the tomato plants to stakes. She is an outspoken, truthful woman, or she was until she learned better. Now, instead of saying, "You have planted the tomatoes in the damp part of the garden," she waits until October when she makes her annual trip to her home in Europe; then she gives me my good-by kiss and says casually," Tomatoes in damp soil tend more to get fungi," and walks away to her plane. But by October nothing in the garden matters, so sure am I that I will never plant it again.9.I garden, I suppose, because I must. It would be intolerable to have to pass an unplantedfenced garden a few times a day. There are also certain compensations, and these must be what annually turn my mind toward all that work. There are few sights quite as beautiful as a vegetable garden glistening in the sun, all dewy and glittering with a dozen shades of green at seven in the morning. Far lovelier, in fact, than rows of hot dogs. In some pocket of the mind there may even be a tendency to change this vision into a personal reassurance that all this healthy growth, this orderliness and thrusting life must somehow reflect similar movements in one's own spirit. Without a garden to till and plant I would not know what April was for.10.As it is, April is for getting irritated all over again at this pointless, time-consuming hobby. I donot understand people who claim to "love" gardening. A garden is an extension of oneself—or selves—and so it has to be an arena where striving does not cease, but continues by other means. As an example: you simply have to face the moment when you must admit that the lettuce was planted too deep or was not watered enough, cease hoping it will show itself tomorrow, and dig up the row again. But you will feel better for not standing on your dignity. And that's what gardening is all about—character building. Which is why Adam was a gardener.(And all know where it got him, too.)11.But is it conceivable that the father of us all should have been a weaver, shoemaker, oranything but a gardener? Of course not. Only the gardener is capable of endlessly reviving so much hope that this year, regardless of drought, flood, typhoon, or his own stupidity, this year he is going to do it right! Leave it to God to have picked the proper occupation for his only creature capable of such self-delusion.12.I suppose it should be added, for honesty's sake, that the above was written on one of thecoldest days in December.。

"she asked."Could I watch 1 show first?"I asked."No!"She replied angrily."You watch TV all the time and never help out around the house! I can't work all day and do housework all evening."Well, I work all day at school, too!I'm just as tired as you are!"I shouted back.My mom did not say anything and walked away. For 1 week she didn't do any housework and neither did I.Finally I could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt. The next day my mom came home from work to find the house clean and tidy.“What happened?”She asked in surprise. “I'm so sorry, mom. 八年级下册英语牛津第三课课文
八年级下册英语牛津第三课课文In the bustling city of London, there was a small, quaint school that seemed almost hidden by the towering buildings surrounding it. This school, known for its rigorous academic program and diverse student body, was in the midst of an exciting week dedicated to cultural exchange. The eighth-grade class had been preparing for months, and now it was time to showcase their hard work. The students had been assigned different countries to research and represent. They delved into languages, customs, traditional clothing, and, most importantly, the educational systems of their chosen nations. Among the students, Emily and Liam had been paired up to study and present about China, a country with a rich history and a rapidly evolving educational landscape.Emily, with her keen interest in languages, had taken the lead on learning basic Mandarin phrases. She practiced day and night, determined to greet the audience in a language that was entirely foreign to her just a few months ago. Liam, on the other hand, was fascinated by history and spent his time researching China's educational reforms and the significance of the Gaokao, China's national college entrance examination. As the day of the presentation approached, the classroom transformed into a mini United Nations. Flags of various countries adorned the walls, and traditional music played softly in the background, creating an atmosphere of global unity. The students, dressed in their respective traditional attires, were a vibrant mosaic of the world's cultures.Emily and Liam's turn came, and they stepped forward with confidence. Emily greeted the audience with a cheerful "Nǐ hǎo," which was met with applause and admiration from her classmates and teachers. Liam followed with an insightful overview of China's education system, highlighting the balance between maintaining traditional methods and embracing new, innovative approaches to learning.Their presentation was not just a mere recitation of facts; it was a story that wove together the threads of language, history, and culture into a tapestry that illustrated thedepth and complexity of education in China. They talked about the importance of the English language in Chinese schools, particularly the role of textbooks like the Oxford English series, which provided a window into the Western world for Chinese students. As they concluded, Emily and Liam reflected on what they had learned through this project. It was not just about the grades or the applause; it was about understanding and appreciating the diversity that exists within their own classroom and beyond. They realized that education is a journey that transcends borders and that knowledge is a bridge connecting people from all walks of life. The cultural exchange week ended with a celebration of unity and learning. The students had not only expanded their horizons but also formed bonds that would last a lifetime. The small school in London had become a microcosm of the world, and the eighth graders had taken their first steps toward becoming global citizens. As the sun set on this memorable week, the students left the school with a sense of accomplishment and a newfound appreciation for the world's cultures. They understood that while they came from different backgrounds, they shared a common pursuit of knowledge and a collective hope for a future filled with understanding, cooperation, and peace. 。

It’s like our Christmas dinner.D: What have you prepared?G: We’ve prepared fish, tofu, fried meat balls, ect. Every dish has its meaning, like peace, good luck, go od health…And I’ve learned to make jiaozi!3.D: Have you tasted the jiaozi you made?G: Oh yeah, they were not bad, although they didn’t look as good as the others. In fact, we’ve just finished dinner. It lasted for three hours!D: Three hours! What have you eaten?G: Lots and lots! And it’s not just about eating. The family wished each other, and me, good luck, and we watched TV. Everyone was so happy!Lesson 8 A PicnicJulie: Hello?Uncle Dan: Hello Julie?Julie: Oh hi, Uncle Dan.Uncle Dan: Can I speak to your mum or dad?Julie: I’m sorry. They’re not here. Can I take a message?Uncle Dan: Sure. We’re going out now but please tell them we’re going to leave at 10:30 tomorrow morning and we’ll see you and your mum and dad tomorrow afternoon for our picnic at the lake.Julie: OK, I’ll tell them. It’s going to be fun. Dean’s coming too, right?Uncle Dan: Yes, your cousin Dean will be there.Julie: Good. OK bye!Uncle Dan: Now, just wait. There’s more. Have your mum and dad bought any fruit for the picnic? Julie: yes, I think they’ve already bought some strawberries and vegetables.Uncle Dan: OK. Can you tell them not to buy more fruit? We’ve got a couple of big watermelons. Julie: All right. Anything else?Uncle Dan: Yes. Please tell them not to buy any sau sages either. We’ll do that when we get there. Are you writhing this down?Julie: Yes, I can do that.Uncle Dan: OK. Thanks a lot.Julie: No problem. I’ve written it down and I’ll tell them this when they come home.Uncle Dan: Great. Bye now.Julie: Bye.Lesson 9 ThanksgivingIt was the turkey that make it the worst Thanksgiving ever…well, it nearly did. All the family-my grandparents, my parents, my aunt and uncle, my cousin, my sister and I-expected the turkey. However, turkey is not the easiest thing to cook. It takes a lot of time to prepare and a lot of work to cook…and there are a lot of chances for things to go wrong. My mum and dad bought a nice, big turkey a few days before Thanksgiving. My mum was proud of herself as she got it for a good price. The night before Thanksgiving, Mum got the turkey out of the fridge. Early the next morning, my sister and I helped her put some butter and salt on the turkey, and then Mum put it in the oven. It looked like it would be delicious. My sister and I were excited. But soon, we noticed something was wrong. The oven was not heating up. Dad checked it closely. Then he said in a low voice, “it’s broken!”Mum’s heart nearly stopped. She didn’t want her dinner to be a failure. We didn’t know what to do. How were we going to feed everyone without the turkey? Mum looked worried. Finally, Dad had an idea, and we all agreed with his suggestion to order pizza instead. After all, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and spending time with your family. If we did not have turkey, it was different but there was nothing awful about it.That evening, we shared a delicious pizza. We had a great time, talking, eating and playing games. Thanksgiving without turkey can still be fun!Communication WorkshopHi Jason,Aunt Linda told me you were visiting China and were staying with a host family. How long have you been there? Have you had any interesting experiences?Today is the Dragon Boat Festival. Have you done anything special for that? What did you eat? Look forward to your email.Hey Mandy,Thanks for your email. I’ve been here for one week. I’ve enjoyed my stay very much. The host family is very nice to me. They have a son of my age. He took me to the night market. I tried many kinds of traditional Chinese food there. Some of them looked strange but tasted really good! I also tried to order food myself. You’re right. It was the Dragon Boat Festival yesterday. I tried some zongzi but I haven’t made any myself. I’ve eaten both sweet zongzi and salty zongzi. I like the salty ones bet ter. I also watched the dragon boat races. The drums were loud and the boats were very colourful. It was fun.I’ve bought you some zongzi. You can have a taste when I come back next week. I hope you’ll like them。

As a mountain climber, Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangero us sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in UtahOn that day, Aron's arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock that fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Becausehe could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and h oped that someone would find him. But when his water ran o ut, he knew that he would have to do something to save his o wn life. He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knif e to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he ban daged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. Afte r that, he climbed down the mountain to find help. After losing his arm, he wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place. This means being in a difficult situation th at you cannot seem to get out of. In this book, Aron tells of t he importance of making good decisions, and of being in control of one's life. His lose for mountain climbing is so great t hat he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience.Do we have the same spirit as Aron? Let's think about it bef ore we find ourselves “between a rock and a hard place”, an d before we have to make a decision that could mean life or death.Unit 2 I'll help to clean up the city parksP11 3aStudents Who VolunteerMario Green and Mary Brown from Riverside High Schoo l give up several hours each week to help others.Mario loves animals and wants to be an animal doctor. The kids are sitting in the library, bu t you can see in their eyes that they‟re going on a different j ourney with each new book. Volunteering here is a dream co me true for me. I can do what I love to do and help others at the same time.P12 4bMost people today are only worried about getting good jobs lots of money. In their free time, They think about what for fun or relaxation. However, few people think a bout what they can do others. There are many people w ho are less lucky than us. Volunteering our time to help thes e people is a good way our free time. For example, we ca n make plans sick children in the hospital or raise mone y for homeless people. Some people even stop doing their job s for a few months to a year to another country, like Afr ica, and help people there.P14 2bI’ll Send You a Photo of LuckyDear Miss Li,I‟d like to thank you for sending money to Animal Helpers. I‟m sure you know that this group was set up to help disable d people like me. You helped to make it possible for me to ha ve Lucky. Lucky makes a big difference to my life. Let me te ll you my story. What would it be like to be blind or deaf? Or imagine you ca n‟t walk ou use your hands easily. Most people would never think about this, but many people have these difficulties. I ca n‟t use my arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying thing s are difficult for me. Then one day last year, a friend of min e helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a special trained dog. She also thought a dog might cheer me up. I love animals and I was excited about the idea of ha ving a dog. After six months of training with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring him home. My dog‟s name is Lucky —a good name for him because I feel very lucky to have him. You see, I‟m only able to have a “dog-helper” because of your kindness! He wanted a walk, but I was too tired.I threw down my bag and went to the living room. The minu te I sat down in front of the TV, my mom came over. “Could you please take the dog for a walk?” she asked.“Could I watch one show first?” I asked. “NO!” she replied angrily. “You watch TV all the time and never help out arou nd the house! I can‟t work all day and do housework all eve ning.” “Well, I work all day at school, too! I‟m just as tired as you are!” I shouted back.My mom did not say anything and walked away. For one week, she did not do any housework and neither did I. Finally, I could not find a clean dish or a clean shirt. The next day, my mom came home from work to find the ho use clean and tidy. “What happened?” she asked in surprise.“I‟m so sorry, Mom. I finally understand that we need to sh are the housework to have a clean and comfortable home,” I replied. P22 2b Dear Sir,I don‟t understand why some parents make their kids help with housework and chores at home. Kids these days already have enough stress from school. They don‟t have time to study and do housework, too. Housework is a waste of their tim e. Could we just let them do their job as students? They shou ld spend their time on schoolwork in order to get good grade s and get into a good university. Also, when they get older, th ey will have to do housework so there‟s no need for them to do it now. It is the parents‟ job to provide a clean and comfo rtable environment at home for their children. And anyway, I think doing chores is not so difficult. I don‟t mind doing th em.Mr. SmithDear Sir,I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. It‟s not enough to ju st get good grades at school. Children these days depend on t heir parents too much. They‟re always asking, “Could you g et this for me?” or “Could you help me with that?” Doing ch ores helps to develop children‟s independence and teaches t hem how to look after themselves. It also helps them to unde rstand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with t heir parents, they should know that everyone should do their part in keeping it clean and tidy. Our neighbor‟s son got into a good college but during his first year, he had no idea how to take care of himself. As a result, he often fell ill and his gr ades dropped. The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future. Ms. MillerUnit 4 Why don’t you talk to your parents?P27 3aDear Mr. Hunt,My problem is I can‟t get on with my family. Relations betw een my parents have become difficult.and development of toi lets. It also encourages governments and social groups to think about ways to improve toilets in the future.Linlin:Last year I went to the Hangzhou National Tea Muse um. It‟s a relaxing and peaceful place near a lake. The tea a rt performances show how to make a perfect cup of tea. For thousands of tourists from China, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderf ul and safe place to take a holiday. Whether you like Indian food, Western food or J apanese food, you‟ll find it all in Singapore! Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever been to a zoo a t night? Singapore has a Night Safari. It might seem strangeto go to a zoo when it‟s dark. However, if you go to see lions, tigers or foxes during the daytime, they‟ll probably be aslee p! A lot of animals only wake up at night ,so this is the best ti me to watch them. At the Night Safari, you can watch these animals in a more natural environment than in a normal zoo.One great thing about Singapore is that the temperature is a lmost the same all year round. This is because the island is s o close to the equator. so you can choose to go whenever you like-spring, summer, autumn or winter. And, of course, it‟s not t oo far from China!Unit 10 I've had this bike for three years.P75 3aMy children are growing up fast. My daughter is 16 and my boy has just started junior high school. As they get bigger ou r house seems to get smaller. So we‟ve been clearing out a lo t of things from our bedrooms for a yard sale. We‟ve decided to each sell five things we no longer use. We‟ll give the money we raise to a children‟s home. My son wasquite sad at first. He found a lot of toys that he doesn‟t play with anymore but still wanted to keep. For example, he‟s ow ned a train and railway set since his fourth birthday, and he played with it almost every week until he was about seven. A nd he didn‟t want to lose the toy monkey he‟s had since birt h. I remember when he would never go to bed without it. My daughter was more understanding, although she also felt sa d to part with certain toys. As for me, I didn‟t want to give u p my football shirts, but, to be honest, I haven‟t played for a while now. I‟m getting older, too!P78 2aHometown FeelingsSome people still live in their hometown. However, others m ay only see it once or twice a year. Nowadays, millions of Chi nese leave the countryside to search for work in the cities. A mong these is Zhong Wei, a 46-year-old husband and father. He has lived in Wenzhou for the last13 years. With a hard job in a crayon factory, he doesn‟t find much time to visit his hometown. “I used to return home a t least once a year, but I haven‟t been back for almost three years now. It‟s a shame, but I just don‟t have the time,” he says. Many people like Zhong Wei regard with great interest how their hometowns have changed. Perhaps large hospitals and new roads have appeared. In many places, the government h as also built new schools and sent teachers from the cities to help.“I noticed that‟s true of my hometown,” adds Zhong Wei. “Children have learned to read and count at my old primary school since the mid-20th century. But now the buildings are really old. I hear the y‟re going to build a new school there.” Zhong Wei thinks such developments are good, and he also knows that his home town cannot always stay the same.According to Zhong Wei, however, some things will never ch ange. “In my hometown, there was a big old tree opposite th e school. It is still there and has become quite a symbol of the place. Most of the children in my time liked to play together under that big tree, especially during the summer holidays. It was such a happy childhood. Our hometown has left many soft and sweet memories in our hearts.”P79 2cMany Chinese people these days leave their to work in th e .
