Researchers say current exercise guidelines are unrealistic and argue that doctors should sometimes advise small increases in activity instead. They warn the 150minute weekly target is beyond the reach of s ome people—particularly older individuals. And trying to reach these goals could mean the benefits of lighter exercise are overlooked. But public he alth officials say current recommendations have proven benefits in lowering the risk of heart disease.
There is increasing evidence that inactivity is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) and some types of cancer. UK guidelines for adults recommend at least twoandahalf hours of moderate activity a week, in short periods of 10 minutes or more.
But in two separate articles in The BMJ, experts argue the message needs to change, with greater emphasis on making inactive people move more. Prof. Philipe de Souto Barreto at the University Hospital of Toulouse, advises people who are sedentary (久坐不动的) to make small increases in their activity levels—rather than pushing to achieve current goals. He points to previous studies which show even short periods of walking or just 20 minutes of energetic activity a few times a month can reduce the risk of death, compared to people who do no exercise.
In the second article, Prof. Philipe Sparkling of the Georgia Institute of Technology, says doctors should tailor their advice—particularly for older patients. He suggests using GP visits for people over 60 to discuss “realistic options” to increase activity—such as getting people to stand up and move during TV commercial breaks.
Prof. Kevin Fenton at Public Health England says, “Everyone needs to be active every day—short periods of 10 or more minutes of physical activity have proven health benefits, but getting 150 minutes or more of moderate activity every week is the amount we need to positively impact on a wide range of health conditions.” This includes reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

(2021·湖南十三校第一次联考)
Showrooming
One of the biggest challenges facing brickandmortar retailers (实体零售店) in recent years has been the “showrooming”. Driven by the desire to get the best prices, many shoppers are now visiting brickandmortar stores to personally check on products that interest them, only to leave and then buy the items online. The new trend is forcing retailers to find out new ways to keep consumers from leaving their store for cheaper prices online.
Recent research found that 40 percent of US shoppers have showroomed previously, with bigbox retailers suffering the most. Spe cifically, the study shows that Best Buy, Walmart and Target are the most likely brickandmortar stores to have shoppers test out a product instore and then purchase it online later, while Amazon is benefiting most from the practice, with nearly 60 percent of shoppers using the online retail giant (巨人) most often to make their showrooming purchases.
Smartphones have pushed showrooming into the front. Shoppers no longer have to wait until they get home to see if they can find a cheaper price for the products they're considering buying. With smartphones, consumers can now compare virtual prices, at both other brickandmortar stores and online ones while still inside a retail store. If they can find what they're seeking for less expensive online, the majority will be seeking_the_first_exit. A recent study showed that 45 percent of customers shopping at brickandmortar stores walk out and buy their purchases online for a discount of as little as 2.5 percent.
This puts pressure on retailers to provide both an instore experience worth
staying for and an online presence that can attract shoppers who are showrooming in other businesses.
To cut down on showrooming, many retailers are adopting new methods to keep shoppers in their stores. Among the steps they're ta king are pricematching guarantees that allow shoppers to pay a discounted price if they find it cheaper online. This ensures that even a showrooming shopper can make the purchase in the store—regardless of whether they find the cheaper price online.
Another popular method to fight against showrooming is to give shoppers the ability to buy something online and pick it up at the store. This reduces shopping costs and gets customers in the store, where they may be encouraged to make an additional purchase.
It is also important for businesses to take into consideration what makes shoppers purchase something instore rather than online, and meet those needs. Research has found that more than 8 in 10 Americans consider being able to take the goods home immediately and the ability to touch and feel them—the most important aspects when deciding to purchase in a store rather than online.
【语篇解读】最近几年来,实体店面临的最大挑战就是消费者在实体店体验产品以后,却在网上购买产品。

故选B项。
9.What contributes to the growing popularity of showrooming?
A.The advertisements by online retail giants.

(2021·甘肃省兰州市高考实战模拟考试)
My mother grew up in a small coal mining town in southwest Iowa. My grandfather once told me that she knew no stranger and considered everyone in that community her friend. That attitude continued wherever she lived for the rest of her life.
As a young girl, I felt embarrassed and cringed (畏缩) every time my mother addressed strangers in the grocery store or on the city bus. She talked to everyone and offered a smile.
What really sold_me_on Mom's approach to life was her experience on the senior bus, a story I've repeated to others many times. The weeks I could not be there, she used this lowcost transportation to the grocery store. After her first trip, I asked her how it went.
“Ha!” she said, “I got on that bus and what did I see? Thirteen little old ladies and one old man, and not one word was spoken.”
I wondered how long it would be until the somberness (忧郁的气氛) on that bus would change. On my next visit, Mom mentioned the ladies on the bus and something one of them had told her.
“Oh, are you talking with them now?” I asked.
“Of course,” she said. “One day I climbed up the steps of the bus and before I looked for a seat, I gave them a big smile and I sa id, ‘Isn't it a wonderful day?’ I noticed a few shy smiles.”
Mom didn't give up. She greeted them all each time she got on the bus and before long, the whole group was laughing and talking to one another. The bus became more than just transportation.
She's been gone for ten years but I've carried on her recipe for life. I smile at people as I walk by and often begin a conversation in the checkout line. Silent, solemn (严肃的) people respond with smiles of their own and a bit of chatter. All it takes is for one person to initiate (发起) the smile or greeting. It was me who had done the smiling first and all those people had responded. My mother didn't lecture but taught me by example. She'd given me a recipe for life.
