When I was three years old, I couldn't speak. It was a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.
One day, I was shadowing(跟随)my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic(模仿)her mouth's movements until I formed a word.
It turned out I'm deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow.
Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my "good ear", and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.
People call my deaf side my "bad ear", but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
Owning a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, "Aren't those for old men?" At that moment, I felt different. It took me a long time to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it's not just school kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles(字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.
And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations –I'm lucky. I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sleeping, I'm even superhuman.
(1)How does the author view his hearing difficulty?
A.It's a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.
B.It gave him a chance to experience something special.
C.It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.
D.It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.
(2)What can be inferred from the passage about the author?
A.He was born deaf.
B.He is optimistic and helpful.
C.The hearing aid brings convenience to his daily life.
D.His family and classmates have supported him a lot.
(3)What is the author's attitude toward his life?
A.Excited.
B.Anxious.
C.Grateful.
D.Disappointed.
(4)What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?
A.To give advice on life to disabled people.
B.To show how difficult life is for disabled people.
C.To show the convenience a hearing aid could bring.
D.To share his experience of treating a disadvantage with gratitude.
【答案】(1)B

Many scientists today are convinced that life exists elsewhere in the universe---life probably much like that on our own planet. They reason in the following way.
As far as astronomers can determine, the entire universe is built of the same matter. They have no reason to doubt that matter obeys the same laws in every part of the universe. Therefore, it is reasonable to guess that other stars, with their own planets, were born in the same way as our own solar system. What we know of life on earth suggests that life will arise wherever the proper conditions exist.
Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere. This eliminates(除去) all those planets in the universe that are not about the same size and weight as the earth. A smaller planet would
lose its atmosphere; a larger one would hold too much of it.
Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. Only single stars that are steady sources of heat and light like our sun would qualify.
Finally, life could evolve(进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun. With a weaker sun than our own, the planet would have to be closer to it. With a stronger sun, it would have to be farther away.
If we suppose that every star in the universe has a family of planets, then how many planets might support life? First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next eliminate most of their planets; they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate all those planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet. It may not have begun yet, or it may have already died out.
This process of elimination seems to leave very few planets on which earthlike life might be found. However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.
(1)The existence of life depends on all of the following factors EXCEPT .
A.the right amount of atmosphere
B.our own solar system
C.steady heat and light
D.the right distance from the sun
(2)Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?
A.The planet must be as big and heavy as the earth.
B.Proper conditions are essential to the existence of life.
C.Double stars can provide steady light and heat.
D.The distance between a planet and its sun should be right.
(3)What kind of planet might NOT support life?
A.Most of the planets of the stars.
B.Stars similar to our sun.
C.Planets similar to the earth.
D.Planets with proper conditions.
(4)At the end of the passage the author suggests that .
A.it is impossible for life to exist on planets
B.earthlike life could only exist on a few planets
C.life could exist on only one planet in a million
D.life could exist on a great number of planets
【答案】(1)B
(2)C
(3)A
(4)D
根据第三段中的“Life requires the right amount and kind of atmosphere”;第四段中“Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light.”以及第五段中“Finally, life could evolve(进化) only if the planet is just the right distance from its sun”可知,生命的进化需要适当数量和种类的大气、稳定的光和热供应以及行星与太阳的距离恰到好处。
根据第四段中的“Life also requires a steady supply of heat and light. This eliminates double stars, or stars that flare up suddenly. ” 可知,生命也需要稳定的光和热供应。
这就排除了双星,或突然爆发的恒星。
故选C。
(3)考查推理判断。
根据倒数第二段中的“First, eliminate those stars that are not like our sun. Next eliminate most of their planets; they are either too far from or too close to their suns. Then eliminate all those planets which are not the same size and weight as the earth. Finally, remember that the proper conditions do not necessarily mean that life actually does exist on a planet.”
故选A。
根据最后一段中的“However, even if life could exist on only one planet in a million, there are so many billions of planets that this would still leave a vast number on which life could exist.”

While your pet fish may appear to be unaware of your presence, chances are that it knows you extremely well and can probably even identify you from a crowd of human faces!
To test if this was accurate, some scientists decided to study archerfish(喷水鱼). These animals don't have a sophisticated(复杂的)brain that is necessary to recognize the slight differences between human facial features.
They began by presenting four archerfish with images of two human faces. Initially, the fish spit at both. However, they soon learned spitting water at the one selected by the researchers earned them a food treat. After that, they focused primarily on that image. The researchers then took the experiment one step further by introducing 44 other human faces to the mix.
To the researcher's astonishment, the trained archerfish were able to recall the learned image almost 81% of the time. And this accuracy improved to 86% when the researchers made the identification even harder, by replacing the colored photos with a set of black and white images and hiding the shape of the head.
The results of the study suggest that though having tiny brains, archerfish may have developed high visual discrimination abilities. While it is contrary to the previous theory that a sophisticated
brain is necessary to recognize human faces, the researchers believe they do not recognize faces by recalling complex facial information like gender and identity, but more likely by discriminating between detailed patte rns. Even so, the fact that these archerfish could “remember” those faces demonstrates that they have an impressive memory for details that lasts much longer than the originally-thought 3 seconds!
This is not the first time researchers have realized ho w “smart” fish are. Previous studies have shown that fish can recognize those fish they have “socialized” with previously, and even recall complex three-dimensional maps of their surroundings.
(1)What is the purpose of the study?
A. To describe archerfish are easy to teach.
B. To tell people archerfish like to be rewarded.
C. To prove archerfish can recognize human faces.
D. To show archerfish can easily develop a habit.
(2)Why did the researchers use black and white images?
A. They could get these images easily.
B. Archerfish got tired of color images.
C. They wanted to make the task more difficult.
D. These images wouldn't get ruined by water.
(3)What conclusion did researchers draw in the study?
A. Archerfish have a 3-second memory.
B. Archerfish could distinguish detailed patterns.
C. Archerfish have a special form of communication.
D. Archerfish could remember complex facial information.
(4)What can we infer from the text?
A. Fish are social animals.
B. Fish are as clever as humans.
C. Fish are able to tell different shapes.
D. The results shocked the researchers.
【答案】(1)C
(2)C
(3)B
(4)D

LIANG TAO sold 80 pink Givenchy bags in 12 minutes. Becky Fang sold 100 Mini Cooper cars in just five. Both are wanghong, literally “re d-hot on the web”. Every day millions of Chinese search social media for wanghong posts or tune in to live-streams for wanghong's opinions on everything. The fans are helping this new Chinese Internet star to make money out of their popularity—and to shake up the country's e-commerce industry in the process.
A few of wanghong have been hired by luxury brands. Jaeger-LeCoultre, a Swiss watchmaker, hired Papi Jiang for a video ad targeting young urbanites (都市人), including her 27m fans on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblog. Zhang Yi of iiMedia Research, a consulting firm, estimates that up to 15% of sales on shopping sites like Taobao or social-media apps such as WeChat are influenced by wanghong's public support. The length of a dress might be decided by a survey of a wanghong's fans; its launch date might be based on the number of hits, shares or comments it collects, some of which can cause last-minute design changes.
This poses a new challenge for retailers(零售商), whose supply chains must respond ever more quickly to wanghong's opinions. Whereas previously a company would look for a celebrity to match its image, wanghong and their admirers are shaping goods.
Another challenge comes directly from wanghong themselves. They increasingly make money not merely from online support or advice but by launching their own e-commerce stores. Sales of goods accounted for just under half of wanghong earnings of 53bn yuan ($8bn) in 2016, estimates Analysys, a Chinese market-research firm (the rest came mostly from live-show tips and adverts).
Some wanghong are going a step further. In November Becky Fang launched her own clothing line. Part of her motivation, she says, was that the brands she supported did not always match the trends she was sharing with her followers. By creating her own brand, Becky's Fantasy, she have full control of the quality. She also gains a new income. For the time being only 3-5% of wanghong follow Becky Fang's example, iiMedia Research estimates. But it expects the model to become an industry in its own right, including entertainment and e-commerce, and driven by online data.
(1)Why can wanghong use their popularity to make money?
A. Because they are Internet stars.
B. Because they use social media.
C. Because their opinions influence fans.
D. Because they can shake the e-commerce industry.
(2)What is the characteristic of the products supported by wanghong?
A. It is fans-based.
B. It is social-media-based.
C. It is design-shared.
D. It is youth-targeted.
(3)What are the challenges for retailers?
A. Online support and advice.
B. Increasing sales of goods online.
C. Quick responses to the market changes.
D. Wanghong's opinions and e-commerce stores.(4)Why do some wanghong create their own brands?
A. Because they want to attract more fans.
B. Because they want to share with their followers.
C. Because they want to set up a new industry model.
D. Because the brands they speak for can't satisfy their fans.
【答案】(1)C
(2)A
(3)D

Mexico sites on an island plateau (高原) surrounded by volcanic peaks, which makes air quality
a constant concern for people who live there.
In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting a temporary ban on private and Federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles, public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban.
Mexico City isn't the first urban center to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more than an awareness-raiser. It was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when the pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city ordered some 1.1m of the area's 4.7m cars off the streets and also offered free bus and subway rides.
Mexico City's temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air quality. India, whose citizens breathe some of the world's dirtiest air, has tried a variety of solutions. Earlier this year, the Indian government started a 4% sales tax on new-car purchases. Beijing also has experience with cleaning the air. The city introduced alternate-day rules in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games, which produced good results. And then there is the London congestion (拥挤) charge, introduced in 2003. The charge has had a measurable effect on air quality.
For now, Mexico City — named by the United Nations as the most polluted city on the planet in 1992 — can look forward to the start of the region's rainy season, when daily showers will help lo clean the air.
(1)How did Mexico ban vehicles in the city?
A. By banning private and Federal vehicles one day a week.
B. By forbidding private and public vehicles every Saturday.
C. By limiting the number of new cars.
D. By prohibiting the vehicles except public ones.(2)What did the government of Mexico do when carrying out the ban on vehicles?
A. Raised the number of public vehicles.
B. Offered free bus and subway rides.
C. Introduced more travel options.
D. Encouraged citizens to leave the city.
(3)What may contribute to improving the air quality in Mexico?
A. Alternate-day rules.
B. Tax rises.
C. Congestion charge.
D. The rainy season.(4)What's the best title for the passage?
A. Mexico —an Island Plateau
B. A Variety of Bans on Vehicles in Mexico
C. Should Cities Be Car-free Zones
D. How to Improve Air Quality
【答案】(1)A
(2)B
(3)D

Recent summer temperatures in parts of Australia were high enough to melt asphalt. As global warming speeds up the heat and climatic events increase, many plants may be unable to cope. But at least one species of eucalyptus tree can resist extreme heat by continuing to “sweat” when other essential processes stop, a new study finds.
As plants change sunlight into food, or photosynthesize (光合作用), they absorb carbon dioxide through pores on their leaves. These pores also release water via transpiration(蒸腾), which circulates nutrients through the plant and helps cool it by evaporation(蒸发). But exceptionally high temperatures are known to greatly reduce photosynthesis—and most existing plant models suggest this should also decrease transpiration, leaving trees in danger of fatally overheating. Because it is difficult for scientists to control and vary trees' conditions in their natural environment, little is known about how individual species handle this situation. Ecologist John Drake of the S.U.N.Y. College of Environmental Science and Forestry and his colleagues grew a dozen Parramatta red gum (Eucalyptus parramattensis) trees in large, climate-controlled plastic pods that separated the trees from the surrounding forest for a year in Richmond, Australia. Six of the trees were grown at surrounding air temperatures and six at temperatures three degrees Celsius higher. The researchers withheld (扣留) water from the surface soil of all 12 trees for a month to imitate a mild dry spell, then induced a four-day “extreme” heat wave: They raised the maximum temperatures in half of the pods(three with surrounding temperatures and three of the warmer ones)— to 44 degrees ℃. Photosynthesis ground to a near halt in the trees facing the artificial heat wave. But to the researchers' surprise, these trees continued to transpire at close-to-normal levels, effectively cooling themselves and their surroundings. The trees grown in warmer conditions coped just as well as the others, and photosynthesis rates bounced back to normal after the heat wave passed, Drake and his colleagues reported online in Global Change Biology.
The researchers think the Parramatta red gums were able to effectively sweat — even without
photosynthesis — because they are particularly good at tapping into water deep in the soil. But if a heat wave and a severe drought (干旱) were to hit at the same time and the groundwater was exhausted, the trees may not be so lucky, Drake says.
Other scientists call the finding encouraging. “It's definitely good news,” says Trevor Keenan, an ecologist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, who was not part of the study. “It would be very i nteresting to know how this translates to other species,” he adds. Drake hopes to conduct similar experiments with trees common in North America.
(1)How does one species of eucalyptus tree cope with extreme heat waves?
A. By releasing water.
B. By blocking sunlight.
C. By absorbing groundwater.
D. By reducing photosynthesis.
(2)What did the researchers do during their study?
A. They grew all the trees in artificial temperatures.
B. They induced a heat wave in a dozen pods of trees.
C. They created climate-controlled surroundings for trees.
D. They varied trees' conditions in their natural environment.
(3)The underlined phrase “ground to a near halt” in Paragraph 4 means “________”. A. continued B. substituted C. strengthened D. ceased
(4)What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Photosynthesis is necessary for the trees to sweat.
B. No further experiments will be done other species.
C. Other species will be transplanted to North America.
D. Groundwater helps the trees survive the extreme heat.
【答案】(1)A
(2)C

根据第一段中的“But at least one species of eucalyptus tree can resist extreme heat by continuing to 'sweat’”可知,桉树通过“流汗”,即释放水分来抵抗极度的热,故选A。
根据第三段中的“Ecologist John Drake… and his colleagues grew a dozen Parramatta red gum … trees in large, climate-controlled plastic pods that separated the trees from the surrounding forest for a year in Richmond, Australia.”
根据第二段中的“But exceptionally high temperatures are known to greatly reduce photosynthesis”可知,极度的高温会减少光合作用。
根据倒数第二段中的“The researchers think the Parramatta red gums were able to effectively sweat — even without photosynthesis — because they are particularly good at tapping into water deep in the soil. But if a heat wave and a severe drought (干旱)were to hit at the same time and the groundwater was exhausted, the trees may not be so lucky, Drake says.”
