It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing sight.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

The unthinkable keeps happening. The 18th hot car death of the year was recorded Thursday --- on the same day a national public service campaign started. It is meant to warn parents about the dangers of leaving kids in overheated cars. In the latest unfortunate accident, a 10-month-old girl died in Wichita, Kan, after being left by her parents in a car that was parked outside her house. The baby was forgotten, according to the police.
One New Mexico teenager’s creation called “Hot Seat” might someday prevent such deaths. Alyssa Chavez, a 17-year-old from Albuquerque, said she designed a warning system that might stop people from accidentally leaving thei r young children in the car after they get out of it.
Chavez, whose mother owns a day-care center, said she had heard about the deaths of three children in hot cars in summer. “I felt that would be a good project for my eighth-grade science fair project --- to find something to prevent those accidents from happening,” said Chavez.
She bought a door alarm (警报器) and began to design her new warning system. Finally, she won the science fair. And for the last three years, she’s been improving the design and creating a business plan.
The invention works in a simple but effective way. A parent places a sensor pad (感应垫) under the cover of a baby car seat. The pad has a sensor that communicates wit h a key fob (饰物) carried by the parent to find out how far the parent is from the car. If the parent is more than 40 feet away from the car, the pad will check to see if it feels the child in the seat. If it doesn’t, the alarms will not sound.
If it does, then three alarms will go off --- the key fob, the parent’s phone and the car alarm itself. Chavez is now trying to raise money to build a model Hot Seat.
28. What can we say about the 10-month-old girl’s parents?
A. They were too careless.
B. They treated her unkindly.
C. They had poor driving skills.
D. They were against the campaign.
29. Chavez’s warning system ______.
A. was suggested by her mother
B. was designed in her eighth grade
C. works together with a door alarm
D. has helped her earn a lot of money
30. If a baby is sitting in the car, the alarms will go off when ________.
A. the car key is taken out
B. its parent gets out of the car
C. the pad feels it on the car seat
D. its parent is over 40 feet away
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. An interesting science fair project.
B. A nat ional public service campaign.
C. An unfortunate accident in Wichita.
D. A successful invention by a teenager.

Students who date in middle school have significantly worse study skills. They are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to new research from the University of Georgia.
“Romantic relationships are a trademark of adolescence, but very few studies have examined how adolescents differ in the development o f these relationships,” said Pamela Orpinas, study author and professor in the College of Public Health and head of the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior.
Orpinas followed a group of 624 students over a seven-year period from 6th to
12th grade.
Each year, the group of students completed a survey indicating whether they had dated and reported the frequency of different behaviors, including the use of drugs and alcohol. Their teachers completed questionnai res about the students’ academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.
“At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the journal article. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.
“Dating a classmate may have the same emotional pro blems of dating a co-worker,” Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression and divert (转移)attention from studying.”
“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school,”Orpinas concluded.
32.According to the passage, students who date in middle school may_____
A. enjoy better school lives
B. be more likely to hurt others
C. have poorer academic performances
D. are less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
33.Study skills may include the following behaviors and qualities Except_____
A. being kind and helpful
B. being diligent
C. being well organized
D. finishing assigned schoolwork
34. W hat can possibly happen to the school couples after they break up?
A. They don’t want to see each other any longer.
B. Their attention to studying will be affected.
C. They will miss their ex-partners sometimes
D. They will think it’s reasonable to get depressed.
35.Orpinas’ attitude towards dating in middle school is_____
A. objective
B. indifferent
C. positive
D. negative

Self-confidence, motivation (动机), support and knowledge are the main factors determining if one succeeds or fails. Each of these factors influences our chances of success in a different way. 36 .
Lack of self-confidence is probably the most dreadful enemy of success. 37 Even the most capable person is sure to fail with such an attitude. If it is your case too, improving your self-confidence is a must.
Motivation is equally as important as self-confidence. 38 You may even not try to achieve the goal that lies before you. It is important to find out what is the best motivation for you. If you have to do something that does not motivate you, just treat yourself with a reward after you succeed. Of course, this reward should consist of something that will motivate you to pursue(追求) a success.
39 While it is not a must for succeeding in your goals, a lack of support can often lead to failure. It is also true that some people cannot succeed without a proper support from their surroundings. These people often lose their motivation or worse, their self-confidence. If you know such a person, supporting him or her is a right thing to do. Also surround yourself with the right people. You will see the results soon.
Pursuing realistic goals is also important for a success. You should always make sure that your goals are achievable. 40 Unrealistic goals usually lead to a fast failure and also make many people embarrassed.
A. As we know, many people try but do not succeed.
B. Consider all your knowledge and skills when setting up a goal.
C. Motivation is something in yourself that can push you forwards.
D. There are several main reasons why some people cannot succeed.
E. Supportive family and collective workplace are also very important.
F. Without it, you will not push yourself towards a better performance.
G. Thinking you are not good enough to achieve your goals is the same as deciding
that you will not succeed.

When someone has deeply hurt you, you may feel 61 very difficult to let go
of your anger. But forgiveness is possible and it can be 62 great benefit to your health. So far, research 63 (show) that people who forgive have more energy, better appetite and better sleep. “People who forgive show 64 (little) anger and more hopefulness,” says Dr. Frederic Luskin, 65 wrote the book Forgive for Good. “So it can help reduce the tiredness and allow people to feel more 66 (energy).”
So when someone hurts you, cool down first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love. Don’t wait for an apology. “Many times the person who hurt you may never consider 67 (apologize),” says Dr. Luskin. “They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things 68 same way.”
