China will invest 150 billion yuan in building the fiber-optic network, which is forecasted to foster an industry chain valuing multi-billion yuan. China Telecom plays an important role in this big project that people attach great importance to.
Right now the project of the fiber-optic network is quite progressive in the major cities of China and makes out a promising outlook for the relative industry chain. In order to get a better knowing of the fiber-optic network, the journalists from CBF get into a luxury apartment in Shanghai which has been connected the fiber-optic network of China Telecom to witness the new life brought by China Telecom Shanghai‟s project of “Metro Optic Network” (“MONET”).
Feel “MONET” in “View Park”
On December 17, 2010, the journalists from CBF went into Park View, a luxury apartment area in Changning District, Shanghai together with the directors of China Telecom Shanghai, the managers of this apartment and the journalists from the other media. The trip is to visit a house where the fiber-optic is installed.
We were greeted by a new vision as soon as we got into an apartment. The webpage which can be seen on a computer screen was displayed on a huge TV screen, which is easy to see and fond to look. On the stable two meters away stood a computer, through which people can browse the webpage with remote control.
Zuo Weihua, vice general manager of the View Park Property, said that this was the HD IPTV having introduced the “MONET” of China Telecom. We couldn‟t help admiring the progress from the previous period when the ordinary broadband was used with moving mouse carefully and waiting for the webpage to show. In the bedroom there is a similar set of equipment with the one in the living room. According to Chen Dan, secretary of the Telecom Bureau of the Western Part of Shanghai, China Telecom Shanghai, this set of equipment adopts the IPTV with standard definition, which is inferior to HD IPTV in the image quality.
Since browsing the webpage is as convenient as watching TV. The increasing distance between the viewer and the screen make people feel less restricted. The remote control brings “warmness” to the web life.
Later, Zuo Weihua and He Shaoqin, director of View Park Property, guided us to watch the complete schematic diagram of the fiber-optic network oft his apartment. Reasonable in general
design, this network also has full consideration of electromagnetic radiation prevention and safety guard.
Cost-efficient Packages and Great Potential
“Surfing on the Internet conveniently and watching HD web pages quickly.” Are these the benefits that “MONET”, which features “100MB to each household and 1000Mb to each building”, brings to the residents? After the visit, we put forward the questions to He Shaoqin, Zuo Weihua and Chen Dan.
He Shaoqin said: “The biggest difference between fiber-optic network and ordinary broadband lies in the speed. In the first half of 2010, the customer manager of China Telecom Shanghai came View Park to introduce the …MONET‟. After careful consideration, we decide to change the previous cables in our apartment into fiber-optic cables and introduc e China Telecom‟s package of 10M fiber-optic broadband. Presently, the 280 households in the apartment have already been enjoying the benefits of this package, accounting for three quarters of the total number of households. According to the feedback of th e users, most of them are satisfied with this package!” Meanwhile, He Shaoqin added: “The 10M package is very cost-efficient. The annual expense is 3090 yuan (USD 464.1) and the monthly expense is 309 yuan (USD 46.4). In addition, China Telecom thought carefully of the customized demand of the users, most of whom are foreigners. High standard and strict requirements were adopted in device selection, circuitry design and staff deployment.” When we visited the project, we noticed that the switch of the fitting room for this circuitry, as well as the other connection and control devices have used fire-proof tiles for protection.
Since the “10Mb package” could achieve such a good result, why not use the “100Mb package”? When asked about his question, Zuo Weihua said: We provide fiber-optic network with the demand of users. Among all the fiber-optic packages provided by China Telecom, the 10Mb package can not only greatly improve the broadband speed but also make it possible to install an HD IPTV and a
st andard definition IPTV in each house. This tallies with the user‟s demand, so we choose the this package for our users. Most of the residents here are foreigners, who can not live without Internet. The 10Mb package can greatly improve the speed when they s urf on the foreign websites.”
Chen Dan from China Telecom Shanghai said: “Presently, China Telecom Shanghai took the lead in realizing the plan of …100Mb to each household and 1000Mb to each building‟ in the View Park, in order to build a …Digital Changning District‟ as planned in the 12th Five-Year Period (2011-2015). We launched different packages for different users based on the market survey. The 10Mb fiber-optic package has come out and has been installed in View Park. Commonly, the users who buy the whole-year service are charged 259 yuan (USD 38.9) per month and enjoy the services of high-speed broadband, IPTV, telephone, mobile phone and household Mega Eye. We will provide some favorable conditions for some special customers. For the ordinary users whose ordinary cable network has been turned into a fiber-optic one, China Telecom Shanghai will launch four packages with 10MB, 30Mb, 50Mb and 100Mb broadband. These packages are named “My e-Home”. The 30Mb and 50Mb packages were launched at the end of June 2010. The 100Mb packages were launched at the end of 2010. The packages include 3D interactive video game, video TV phone and so on.”
Fiber-optic network will gradually meet the increasing demand of ordinary people for the Internet. Zuo Weihua said: “Though the 10Mb fiber-optic package can provide ideal conditions for surfing in the Internet, watching IPTV and downloading movies, people‟s desire is endless. To have 100% satisfaction is just a wish that China Telecom and the users are trying to realize. We hope to provide new packages for the users with higher speed and less cost. We will cooperate with China Telecom to meet the users‟ demand.”
It is true. According to the experts, the bandwidth of the fiber-optic network could reach 10Tb, which means that there is still great potential in this field.
Click “MONET” to Refresh “Smart Life”
During the visit, we couldn‟t help wondering what if the “MONET” could get connected to the ordinary families and the offices of small- and medium-sized companies. Then many people will wave goodbye to the low-speed Internet and the low efficiency caused by this.
Fortunately, Shanghai has already formed the plan to get each building and each household connected to the fiber-optic network. In 2011, the number of users of “MONET” will reach 3 million. In 2012, the fiber-optic network will cover the whole city, realizing the plan of “100Mb to each household, 1000MB to each building and 1Tb output”. China Telecom Shanghai plan s to invest 6 billion yuan (USD 901.2 million) in the construction of “MONET”, which can help add 25 billion to 30 billion yuan (USD 3.76 billion to 4.51 billion) to the industries of chips, mobile devices and digital terminals. On the other hand, China Telecom Shanghai has already built an ally with , PPLive, SNDA, etc. to work out more applications based on high-speed broadband. In addition, from the World Expo to the Industry Expo, China Telecom displays a picture of modern low-carbon informatio n life with the philosophy of “MONET” leads “Smart Life” and aims at providing efficient services for the ordinary people.
Early in March 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the document named “Advices about Promoting the Construction of Fiber-optic Broadband Network”, in which a plan of investing 150 billion yuan (USD 22.53 billion) in fiber-optic network in the next three years was put forward. By now, apart from Shanghai, Wuhan has launched the plan of increasing the number of fiver-optic network users to 1 million in 2015. China Telecom‟s branches in Guangdong and Jiangsu are also working on the similar plans.
The construction of fiber-optic network in China is a process full of industrial agglomeration and innovation, which needs the cooperation among China Telecom and related companies. More technologies and products should be developed, making more users to enjoy the “Smart Life” with “MONET”.。
