He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but no one paid attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, In order not to appear rude, she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter. “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked. “Why salt with coffee?” He explained. “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea, I liked playing in the sea… I could feel its salty taste, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it. I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there.”
She was deeply touched. A man who can admit that he’s homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible.
She talked too. About her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start of their love story.
They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. And to think she would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee!
So they married and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated?
I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar.
It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that we would hit it off. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything.
Sweetheart, I don’t exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I’ve learnt to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.

1) Your teens don’t want you to be their friends. What they need is for you to be
a reliable responsible role model worthy of their respect, and not some overgrown child who wears too tight jeans or T-shirts with slogans advocating the good points of 100 proof liquor.
2) Don’t debate the teen ever. If she wants to debate, suggest she sign up for the Debate Club. If you buy into their teen logic (which is basically illogic, the product of an immature brain and every extreme of emotion known to mankind) your mouth will go dry. Teens need to know that no means no. Remember when your teen was two years old and he said “no” a lot? Well now it’s your turn, particularly when your teen wants to engage in behaviors that are dangerous.
3) Don’t buy your teen a car. If you do, he will total it in record time. Guaranteed. The teen should earn the car, or at least a portion of it (and by that I don’t mean one of the tires). You know how you take much better care of an item of clothing you spent a fortune on compared to one you bought in a bargain basement? It’s the same thing, only a car can do serious damage.
4) Encourage sports participation even if your teen has two left feet. In some sports, two left feet won’t knock him out of the box, so to speak. Sports participation develops perseverance and cheerfully functioning as a team member. You also will know
where your child is every day after school (on the field, that is, or at a rival school). Just make sure you root for the right team, okay? Been there, done that.
5) Let the school know you in a good way so that school personnel do not dive under the desk when you approach. If you are asked to speak at the school, your teen will feel mighty proud. If you make something for the bake sale, try to make it taste edible and if you can’t see it through, do yourself and your child a favor and buy something
at the local bakery or supermarket.
6) To know your teens’ friends is to know your teens. Teens have a secret life, and
a parent’s goal is to find out secrecy that is sometimes thicker than the CIA and the KGB combined. If you really want to know what your kid is up to, get to know their friends. How? By being warm and kind, and by asking ques tions that don’t sound like
an interrogation(审讯), but serve that purpose without their knowing it.
5. When your kids are doing something that might negatively affect their future, you should _____.
A. have your kids express their opinions fully and then discuss with them
B. think about how you can be their close friends
C. say no and tell them that they must stop
D. report that to their school immediately
6. According to the passage, as a parent, you should encourage your kids __________.
A. to wear too tight jeans
B. to sign up for the Debate Club
C. to make as many friends as they can
D. to be greatly involved in sports
7. The underlined word “total” in the third paragraph probably means ________.
A. add
B. damage
C. buy
D. earn
8. The passage mainly wants you to know that __________.
A. Raising Teenagers calls for certain parenting skills
B. kids have their secrecy and freedom
C. your teen needs some house rules
D. the family is changing

Feeling tired? Under too much stress? Well, you may want to try Yoga(瑜珈). It’s what more and more people have been turning to to release the trouble of modern life. Practically unheard of in the West until 50 years ago, Yoga has become one of the most popular health trends(潮流) around the world, including China. If you search
for Yoga on line in Chinese, lots of pages are there to see, most of which are main
pages of Yoga clubs. In order to keep fit and lose weight, many girls spend more than l,000 yuan taking part in Yoga classes every month.
However, are you really ready for it? There are several things you need to know before you really take it.
First, do not force your body too much. Yoga has many difficult poses. They are beautiful and worth boasting if you could finish them. But if you force yourself to do as exactly as an experienced Yoga teacher does, you may hurt your body, instead of strengthening it. Do you remember your original purpose for playing Yoga? It is self-building, not competing.
Second, do some research about the Yoga class that you are to attend. Yoga is new in China and there are not so many well-trained Yoga teachers. Some not well organized clubs just employ someone who has learned a little Yoga. Be aware, a non-eligible teacher might wrongly guide you and you could not benefit from the classes much except that they force you to exercise your body a bit. Considering about the large amount of money you invest in it, it’s worth and reasonable to make sure the teachers in the club are qualified(合格的) before you join.
Third, it would be better to learn something about nutrition(营养) when you practise Yoga. In the very beginning, Yoga was part of the Vedas, bible of the traditional Indian philosophy. So it could be regarded as a kind of lifestyle. When you have decided to care for your body, why not feed it properly? In fact, good clubs have their own nutritionists.
Anyhow, make sure you are ready before you act. The fashion may change quickly. But what benefits is still good for us.

If you’re concerned about gaining weight over the upcoming holiday s eason, consider eating more slowly and you might consume less, a study suggests. Diet experts have been giving this advice for years, and now nutrition scientists at the University of Rhode Island have some new data to back it up.
They had 30 normal-weight, college-age women come into a laboratory for lunch on two separate occasions. Each time, the women were offered a huge plate of pasta with tomato-vegetable sauce and grated parmesan cheese, plus a glass of water. They were asked to eat until the point of comfortable fullness. On one occasion, they were instructed to eat as quickly as they could; on the other occasion they are slowly and put down their spoons between bites.
They did not know the food and water was weighed before and after the meal to determine the amount consumed. Findings: When eating quickly, the women consumed 646 calories in about nine minutes. When eating more slowly, they had an average of 579 calories in about 29 minutes.
“ They ate 67 calories more in nine minutes than they did in 29 minutes,” says lead researcher Kathleen Melanson, director of the university’s Energy Metabolism Laboratory. “ If you add that up over three meals a day, that’s a big difference in calories.”
Upon completion of the meal and an hour afterwards, the women were less satisfied and hungrier when eating quickly compared with when they ate slowly, she says. They said they enjoyed the meal more when they were taking their time. Not surprisingly, the women drank more water when they ate more slowly, and researchers are doing a follow-up study on whether that factor contributed to their feeling of fullness.
One way to help control calories intake during Thanksgiving “ is to slow down and savor and enjoy your food more,” Melanson says.
“ Put down the fork between bites and take time to have a conversation and linger
over the meal.” She says.
But Barbara Rolls, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State University, says another study showed that people who paused between bites actually consumed more food during a meal.
: Eating rate is hard to change, so eat at a pace that maximize ( 最大化) your enjoyment of the food.” Rolls says. “ If slowing down and savoring the flavors and textures of foods leaves you feeling more satisfied, go for it”.
13. Scientists at the at the University of Rhode Island conducted their study by

amount of food consumed in ________.

While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with another alcohol related danger: drunken pedestrains.
Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are intoxicated(喝醉的) more frequently and with higher blood alcohol levels than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents, various studies have shown. Forty
percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10 which by law in most states signifies intoxication compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data.
Some types of pedestrain accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7000, or one of every seven highway accidents resulting in death.
“We’re dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that le ads to a severe highway safety problem,” said Richard Blomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc, in Norwalk, Coon.
Blomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research council’s Transportation Research Board(TRB) in Washington in January.
Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Colpitts, who
chairs the board’s committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers have been mystified(迷惑不解) about how to prevent disasters.
