The 2023 Guangdong English Test Was Awesome!
Hi there! My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grader at Sunshine Elementary School in Guangzhou. I just took the big Guangdong English B-Level Exam last weekend and I'm super excited to tell you all about it!
First of all, the test was pretty long - it had listening, reading, writing, and speaking sections and took almost 3 hours total. Phew! I had to practice a lot to get ready. My English tutors Mr. Wang and Ms. Lin helped me prepare by doing tons of practice questions and mock tests. I'm really glad I studied so hard because some of the questions were quite tricky.
The listening part was first. We had to listen to dialogues and passages then answer multiple choice questions about the main ideas and details we heard. There were conversations between friends making plans, a news report about a science competition, and even a funny story about a lost puppy! I did okay on this
section but got thrown off a bit by the accents of some of the speakers.
After listening came the reading comprehension. We had to read several passages then answer questions testing our understanding. One passage was about the history of music around the world, which was fascinating. Another was quite difficult - it described a complex scientific experiment with lots of hard vocabulary. The questions asked specific details so you really had to read carefully. I struggled a bit with that one if I'm being honest.
My favorite part was the writing section! We had two tasks: write a short email to a friend describing our last vacation, and also an longer essay sharing our views on the importance of exercise and sports. For the email, I recounted my family's trip last year to Beijing where we saw amazing sights like the Forbidden City and Great Wall. So cool! For the essay, I wrote all about how playing soccer keeps me active and healthy while also teaching discipline and teamwork. Writing is one of my strengths so I think I rocked those tasks!
Last but not least was the speaking section. This part made me the most nervous! We had to give a short prepared speech on the topic "My Favorite Teacher" as well as respond to some
follow-up questions from the examiner. I spoke about my wonderful English teacher Ms. Jackson and how she uses fun games and activities to make learning English enjoyable. For the follow-ups, the examiner asked about my other hobbies and future goals. Speaking in English still makes me a bit anxious, but I tried my best to slow down, enunciate, and organize my thoughts clearly.
Phew, that's a rundown of the big test! Overall, I feel pretty good about how I did, although there were some tough questions for sure. The reading passage on the science experiment was hard, as was understanding a couple of the listening audio clips. But I felt confident with the writing tasks and prepared speech. Waiting for my results will be agonizing!
Whether I passed or not, I'm proud of all the effort I put into preparing. My parents and teachers were so supportive and pushed me to practice diligently. I've come a long way with my English skills over the years. Tests like this Guangdong exam motivate me to keep working hard and improving. Who knows, maybe I'll be an English teacher myself one day!

Hi there, fellow kids! It's me, your friendly neighborhood English enthusiast, here to spill the beans on the epic Guangdong 2023 English B-Level Exam. Buckle up, 'cause this roller coaster of a test was a real doozy!

The 2023 Guangdong English Test Was Really Hard!
Hey everyone! I'm Xiaoming, a 5th grade student from Guangzhou. I just took the big Guangdong English B-level exam last week and man, it was seriously tough! My brain feels like a big wet noodle after all that hard thinking. But I'll share all the questions with you and what I wrote for the answers. Maybe it will help you when it's your turn to take the test next year!
The first section was listening comprehension. They played some audio recordings and asked us questions about what we heard. One was this boring guy giving a speech about environmental protection. He just droned on and on about
recycling, reducing pollution, that kind of stuff. The question was like "What is one thing the speaker suggests we can do to help the environment?" I wrote down "recycle more" because that's what I remembered him saying like a million times.
Then there was a conversation between two friends making plans to go to the movies. This part was kind of fun because I love movies! They were trying to pick which one to see and a good time. The question asked something like "What genres of movies do the speakers discuss?" I thought it was an action movie and a comedy, so I wrote that down.
After the listening, we had to read some passages and answer questions proving we understood them. Ugh, I'm not a big fan of reading, especially long boring passages! One was about the history of kites and how they were invented in ancient China. It had all these dates and names of which emperor flew kites when. I could barely stay awake! The questions were like "According to the passage, when did people begin flying kites in China?" I had to go back and find the century or year it mentioned.
My favorite reading passage though was an funny story about a kid who accidentally kicked a soccer ball through their neighbor's window. It cracked me up thinking about the trouble
they got into! The question was trickier though, asking something like "What lesson did the character learn by the end of the story?" I wrote that they learned to be more careful when playing sports near houses.
Skipping ahead, there was a whole grammar section testing stuff like verb tenses, pronouns, prepositions...my tiny brain was melting just thinking about it all! One question was "Complete this sentence with the proper verb form: 'Last night I _____ my homework.'" I picked "did" as the right answer.
Then we had to write a short essay responding to a prompt. The prompt was: "What is your favorite outdoor activity and why?" I loooove playing basketball, so I wrote all about dribbling, passing, and shooting hoops with my friends at the park. I threw in some vocabulary words I knew like "exhilarating" and "camaraderie" to sound extra smart.
Finally, we had to translate some sentences back and forth between Chinese and English. One sentence to translate into English was "你明天早上有考试吗?" I wrote "Do you have an exam tomorrow morning?" I was pretty confident I nailed that one!
Phew, that's a quick rundown of the exam questions I can remember! I'll try my best to find out my score when they come out in a few weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed I did okay. No

The Guangdong 2023 English B-Level Exam
Hey guys! I'm super excited to tell you all about the Guangdong 2023 English B-Level Exam that I took a few weeks ago. It was a really big deal and I studied so hard for it. My teacher said it would help show if I was ready to move up to the next English level. I was a little nervous, but also really pumped to show off all the English I've been learning!
The exam had four main sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I'll go through each one and some of the questions I remember. Get ready, here we go!
Listening
For the listening part, we had to listen to recordings and answer multiple choice questions about what we heard. There were conversations between people as well as longer news reports or stories being read out loud.
One conversation I remember was between two friends deciding where to go for lunch. They were talking about different restaurant options and whichdishes they felt like eating that day. The questions asked stuff like "What type of food did they decide on?" and "How did the friends feel about the restaurant choice?"
Another listening was a news report about a school science fair. It described some of the cool projects the students made and who the winners were. We had to answer questions like "What was the prize for first place?" and "How did the reporter describe the winning volcano project?"
I found the listening really fun because I love listening to English and picking out key details. I'm getting better at not just listening to the words but really understanding the whole meaning.
Reading
Then there was the reading section, which had passages to read and questions to answer based on the information. The passages were about all different topics - science, social studies, stories, and more.
One passage was explaining how bees make honey. It went into details about the different jobs bees have in the hive and the
step-by-step process they use. The questions asked things like "What is the main role of the worker bees?" and "How do bees convert nectar into honey?"
Another reading was a short fiction story about a boy who went on an adventure to the park and found a stray dog that became his friend. It was a really sweet story! The questions checked if we could summarize the key events and describe the characters.
I actually found the reading a little tricky because the passages used some pretty advanced vocabulary. But I utilized my strategy of breaking down words I didn't know into roots and prefixes to try and figure out the meaning. Taking it slow and rereading the hard parts helped a lot too.
Writing
For the writing section, we had to write an essay responding to a prompt or question. We got to choose between two options for the writing prompt.
One choice asked us to write a letter to our teacher describing a fun class field trip and what we learned. I decided to go with the other option instead, which was to write a short story about finding a magic object that could grant three wishes.
I outlined my idea first - the magic object was an old compass that a girl finds in the park. For her three wishes she decides to wish for a puppy, to be really good at soccer, and for an awesome treehouse in her backyard. Then I drafted out the full story with all the fun details about how she finds the compass, makes her wishes, and what happens after.
For the writing, my teacher has taught us the importance of using different transition words to connect our ideas into logical paragraphs. I made sure to really spell things out clearly and check my grammar and spelling at the end. I even threw in some descriptive language I've been practicing to make my story nice and vivid!
Speaking
Last but not least was the speaking section. I went into a private room one-on-one with the speaking evaluator for this part. The evaluator would ask me questions and have me respond verbally to demonstrate my English conversation skills.
The first question was pretty simple - she asked me to introduce myself and share some basic facts like my name, age, grade level, and what sports or hobbies I enjoy. I've had lots of practice with those types of questions so I nailed it!
Then she moved on to some more open-ended questions where I had to give longer responses. One question asked me to describe my favorite teacher and what makes them a great teacher. I talked about how patient and kind my English teacher is, and how she uses creative games and activities to help me learn in a really engaging way.
Another speaking question was about my plans for summer vacation. I said I was really looking forward to going camping with my family, playing lots of outdoor games, but also having time to just relax at home too. The evaluator asked some follow-up questions about camping and outdoor activities I enjoy to keep the conversation going.
Overall, I felt really confident about how I did on the speaking portion. I find it fun to just chat in English and I've worked hard on skills like making eye contact, projecting my voice clearly, and making sure to give complete answers.
Phew, that's the full download on the big exam! While it was challenging in some parts, I felt prepared after all my studying. My favorite sections were probably the writing and speaking because I love being creative with the English I've learned.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I did well enough to move up a level. No matter what though, taking this test was
