“Hi, Mrs. Grady,” said Mark when their neighbor opened her door. “Would you like us to shovel(铲)your sidewalk and driveway?” Shoveling was Jamie’s idea, a way to earn enough money for the new Ocean Kingdom video game that came out the next day.
Mrs. Grady was happy, “That would be wonderful, boys. I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”
“It will cost 10 dollars,” Jamie said. “If that’s OK,” Mark added.
“Oh dear,” Mrs. Grady said disappointedly, “I haven’t been able to get to the bank. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”
Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.”
Mrs. Grady doesn’t look like the person who’d come to Mark’s rescue last summer when Mr. Dunn’s dog Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. He wanted to call for help, but his tongue seemed locked behind his
teeth. Then Mrs. Grady’s front door had flown open. She must have seen him from across the street. “Hold on, Mark. I’m coming!” “Goldie” she’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head, Mrs. Grady had slipped between Mark and the dog. She wasn’t much taller than Mark, but she’d stood firm as a rock in front of him. “Goldie, go home!” Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along. “Get!” Goldie had obeyed.
When Mark showed thanks to Mrs. Grady, Mrs. Grady laughed. “It was nothing. Good neighbors watch out for each other, don’t they?”
And now Mrs. Gr ady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer. He smiled and waved at Mrs. Grady, then his shovel deep into the snow.

To extinguish (熄灭)different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invented. They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out. Most portable kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on
small fires. The law requires ships. trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers.
Since fuel , oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguish a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is the most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get.
Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen. This is usually done by covering fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used to cover a small fire.
A third method is called separation, which includes removing the fuel or material easy to burn, from a fire, so that it can find no fuel.
The method that is used to put out a fire depends upon the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in several classes. Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like called Class A Fires. These materials help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by Cooling with water.
28.If a fire breaks out on a bus, which of the follow should be ready there for you

If we need to choose a university course, whether we would like a career change, a better job or simply to learn something new, it's a good idea to think carefully first. To begin with, we had better think that why we need them. We need them because qualifications prove we’ve acquired knowledge or developed skills. For some careers like medicine and law, it’s essential to have specific qualifications. For others, such as journalism, it benefits to have a particular qualification. Most universities set entry requirements for degree courses. Mature entrants don't always need for- mal qualifications, but need evidence of recent study, relevant work experience or professional qualifications.
And then considering what type of course we should do is vital. Our motives will help us choose the best course for our aims and goals. If one is career-driven, he’ll need a course relevant to his profession. If one is interested in self-development and meeting people, he should find out who else will be on the course. There are vocational(职业的)and academic courses. Further education colleges offer academic courses and work-related courses. Universities offer higher education qualifications, such as academic first degrees and higher degrees and the more vocational diplomas. Next, which type of study would suit us best? It depends on several questions. Do we prefer on-the-job training, or do we prefer to research and gather facts? Do we like working in a group covering the same topics and working towards the same goal? If people prefer to work on their own and at their own pace, an open or distance learning course might suit them, but they do need self- discipline and motivation. At the same time, personal circumstances need to be taken into account. An open or distance learning course suits pe ople who are working and don’t know how much time a week they can commit to, or someone who is at home looking after pre-school children.
After deciding which subject and type of course we want, and how to study it, we now need to choose between different course titles and providers. There are many courses and they aren't of equal value. The only way to assess the quality and value of a course is by research. Read prospectuses (简介) carefully and note if a course
is accredited or validated by a recognized body ( this might be an awarding body or a professional body). This can add extra weight to your qualification. Finally, plan for when we finish. If we’re aiming for a particular job, do voluntary work while studying. If you’re doing an English course and want to be a journalist, you could write for the student newspapers or work on the radio. Having a plan will help us make the most of the opportunities that come our way when we’re on the course.
32. Students who are motivated by self-development ______________ .
A. will benefit from open-learning courses
B. could get relevant work experience while they study
C. should inquire about the other students on their course
D. must have certain qualifications
33. Students who have young children _____________ .
A. will benefit from the open-learning courses
B. can be accepted into a course without qualifications
C. will learn practical skills in the courses
D. could get relevant work experience while they study
34. The main idea of Paragraph 2 is _______________ .
A. what people should do after choosing the courses
B. how people know if it's a good course
C. what kind of study would suit people best
D. what type of course people should choose
35. If you prefer to work on your own, what kind of course is suitable?
A. A vocational course.
B. An academic course.
C. An open or distance learning course.
D. An Intensive course or part-time course.

Is it necessary to learn when we are 50s, 60s or even 70s? Most people consider when they get retired, they are supposed to be completely laidback, do something
f u n,o r h a n
g a r o u n d.
36 It’s particularly impor tant to the elderly.
Through learning, we know how to think, how to memorize, how to ask questions and even how to interact with others. According to a study, while we are learning, the brain creates neural(神经) pathways that make us smarter. 37 The more we learn, the more new neural pathways develop in our brains.
When it comes to learning, it doesn’t mean we must load ourselves with lots of knowledge. What we need to do is just learn something we like day in and day out.
38 Everyone learns from bottom to up. If we have an interest to learn, that desire will naturally push us to move forward.
As we feel worn out from learning, don’t be discouraged. 39 An old saying goes, “Birds of a feather fly together.” As long as we have partners to learn all together, our learning excitement will come alive again. On the contrary, if we don’t learn, and choose to distance ourselves from others, we might be getting dumb, and slow; eventually, we lose energy, and life passion. Instead of being bored, dumb, why don’t we keep learning?
40 More importantly, learning explores our life horizon, helps us build up our confidence; gradually, it leads us to a way of finding a sense of value and achievement in the process of learning journey.
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. Don’t worry if we cannot learn well.
C. You should set a high learning target.
D. Learning makes us understand how potential we are.
E. In other words, our brains are active as we learn something new.
F. Look for a partner who has the same common interest as you do.
G. However, the truth is that learning makes us energetic, and self-fulfilled.

W: Umm. Can you pick up some paper for the printer? We have run out of paper. M:Hello, hello, what did you say?
W: Can you hear me now? I mean I need some paper.
M:What? Did you say to pick up some ink for the printer? Sorry, the signal isn’t very good here. Can you repeat that, please?
W: Well, I’ll send you a text message to tell you exactly what I need.
M:What?

W: Can you help me plan next Thursday’s office party?
M: Sure. What do you need the most help with, the food or entertainment?
W: I need help with food.
M: OK. Should this party be formal or casual?
W: I think it should be casual.
M: I agree. Next, we have to decide on food. We have a choice of Chinese food or Italian food.
Which one should we have?
W: I would prefer Chinese food for this party, but maybe we should try something new. What
about Indian food?
M: Not bad, but Karen cannot eat I ndian food. Let’s choose Chinese food. What about music? Should we have a live band or a DJ?
W: I think we should hire a live band, since it would be a celebration for our success in the recent
project.
M: Wonderful! I know a perfect band. They performed at my birthday party last Wednesday.
W: OK then. Well, I will work on my part and get back to you with my progress on Friday. Text 9
W: Did you report a break-in to us just now?
M:Well, it isn’t my place. I am just staying here for two months while my f riends are out of the city. So, besides the TV set and some paintings, I don’t really know what else is missing. All the drawers had been emptied out and I guess some things were taken. My friends will be mad.
W: I see. Now…
M:It wasn’t my fault, of course. All the windows and doors were locked.
W: Now how exactly did you discover the break-in?
M:I went out at 7 o’clock as I do every Thursday to attend my computer class.
Afterwards I stopped at a cafe for a drink and I got back here just after 11 o’clock. W: How can you be so sure of the time?
M: Because I was at the cafe till the ten o’clock news was over, and it’s only a two-minute walk from here. I know my friends will be especially sad about the paintings.
W: We’ll do our best and let you know if we find anything. And if I were you, I would immediately call my friend.
