Bill Jarvis took over our village news agency at a time of life when most of us only want to relax. He just thought he would like something but not too much to do, and the news agency was ready-made. The business produced little enough for him, but Bill was a man who only wanted the simplicity and order and regularity of the job. He had been a long-serving sailor, and all his life had done everything by the clock.
Every day he opened his shop at six a.m. to catch the early trade; the papers arrived on his door-step before that. Many of Bill’s customers were city workers, and the shop was convenient for the station. Business was tailing off by ten o’clock, so at eleven sharp Bill closed for lunch. It was hard luck on anybody who wanted a paper or magazine in the afternoon, for most likely Bill would be down on the river bank, fishing, and his nearest competitor was five kilometers away. Sometime in the afternoon, the evening papers landed on the doormat, and at four o’clock Bill reopened. The evening rush lasted till seven, and it was worth while.
He lived in a flat above the shop, alone. Except in very bad weather, you always knew where to find him in the afternoon, as I have said. Once, on a sunny afternoon, I walked home along the river bank from a shopping trip to the village. By my watch it was three minutes past four, so I was astonished to see Bill sitting there on his little chair with a line in the water. He had no luck, I could see, but he was making no effort to move.
“What’s wrong, Bill?” I called out from the path.
For answer, he put a hand inside his jacket and took out a big, golden object. For a moment I had no idea what it could be, and then it suddenly went off with a noise like a fire engine. Stopping the bell, Bill held the thing up and called back: “Ten to four, you see, and this is dead right.” He stood up then and began to wind in his line.
I had never known anyone carrying a brass alarm clock around with him before.

61. One sunny afternoon the writer was surprised when he saw Bill Jarvis because _____.
A. he thought it was late for Bill to be still fishing
B. he thought Bill was ill, as he was not moving at all
C. Bill had not caught anything, and that seemed strange
D. Bill stayed in his flat when he should have been in his shop
62. What can you infer from the information given in the passage?
A. The bell must have gone off at the wrong time.
B. Bill had dropped off to sleep.

Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States. Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions
appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
It seems certain that these “Kings of the mountains” are moving. Why? Scientists are no t sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.
“The young males are looking for new homes,” says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. “People tend to create too many barriers, such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources, these barriers get in their way.”
The sightings(亲眼目睹) have made people increasingly watchful (警惕的). Sometimes the “mountain lions” that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.
Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.
“To be fair,” says the expert, “mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together.”
63. Mountain lions are moving probably because _________.
A. the suburbs of big cities are peaceful and quiet
B. more roads are being built into the mountains
C. the number of the lions increases in the west
D. young lions are seeking new partners
64. According to the passage, it is clear that __________.
A. the reported sightings of mountain lions have not been proved
B. people walking in the country may come across a lion
C. fences have been built to protect the lions
D. mountain lions prefer urban areas
65. To avoid attracting mountain lions, people are advised ___________.
A. to build more roads for the lions to move safely
B. to keep a close watch on their farm animals
C. not to stay outdoors
D. not to raise pets
66. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Mountain Lions in Unlikely Places
B. Measures Taken to Avoid Lions
C. Number of Sightings Going Up
D. Mountain Lion Moving West
( D )
It’s the place where smart people make smart machines work even smarter. But for the people who work in it, Silicon Valley (硅谷) is more than just a high tec hnology hothouse. It’s also in the sunny California, a great place to start a family and raise kids. What could be better?
But something is happening to the children. Up until the age of two, they develop normally. Their proud parents watch and smile as they take their first steps and speak their first words. But
then everything seems to go backwards. The children become locked into their own small world, unable to communicate at all.
They call it the “curse of Silicon Valley”, but the medical name fo r the condition is autism (孤独症). It used to be thought that autism was a mental illness. Now doctors are sure that it is a disease transmitted genetically (遗传). It seems that the people leading the communications revolution are having children who cannot communicate at all.
But even the parents have trouble communicating. Asperger’s Syndrome (综合症) is connected with autism. People who have it are highly intelligent and often brilliant with numbers or systems but have no social skills, which makes Asperge r’s sufferers into excellent computer professionals. Unfortunately, many of the children of two Asperger’s parents in Silicon Valley seem to be developing serious autism.
There is little anyone can do. And there is no cure in sight. Some argue that no cure should be found. “It may be that autistics(孤独症患者) are essentially different from normal people, but that these differences make them valuable for the evolution of the human race,” says Dr. Kirk Wilhelm of University of California. “To remove the genes for autism could be unnecessary.” It seems that the children in Silicon Valley are paying the price of genius.
67. A person who has autism usually ____________.
A. has difficulty in speaking
B. loses communication skills
C. has trouble in working
D. hates people around
68. Which of the following best explains “curse of Silicon Valley”?
A. The children are brought up in Silicon Valley.
B. Autism only occurs in Silicon Valley.
C. Children suffer from autism due to their parents with Asperger’s Syn drome working in
Silicon Valley.
D. Children living in Silicon Valley unable to communicate.
69. Some people think that no cure of autism should be found because _________.
A. autism always does more good than harm
B. autism isn’t a disease
C. harm will be done to the children
D. autism is necessary in some way
70. What does the writer seem to feel about the children of Silicon Valley?
A. It’s a pity that they cannot have a normal life.
B. They are the pride of the human race.
C. They are sure to have a bright future.
D. It’s likely that they will have a normal life.

第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格中填入最适当的单词。
每空格1个单词。
Canada spends more money on education than most other western countries. Public education
is free until the end of secondary school. Some provinces tell children to buy their own textbooks. Most provinces have a kindergarten program to prepare children for Grade 1. Elementary school is from grade 1 to Grade 6, 7 or 8. Secondary school or high school continues to grade 12. In Quebec, however, high school ends with Grade 11. Students who want to continue their studies attend a CEGEP for two or three years.
Special education is available in the public schools for children with special needs. There are also many private schools in Canada. They are not free although some offer scholarships to students who pass competitive exams. Children attend school from September to June, Monday to Friday, with a break at the end of December. Classes usually begin at 8:30 or 9:00 am and end at 3:30 pm. Many students stay after school for other activities, such as sports teams, drama clubs and bands.
Outside Quebec, provinces may teach French for French-speaking children. Many schools offer English classes for immigrants and schools offer classes in other languages, so that the children of immigrants can learn the language of their families. Postsecondary education is available in most Canadian cities. Universities and community colleges are partly helped by the government, but students also pay for their education. Community colleges offer training in arts, trades and continuing education courses for working adults.

Nice to receive your letter. You asked about “Beijing Green Olympics”. Now I'd like to tell you something about it.
With the 2008 Olympics coming up,every citizen in Beijing is a messenger of Green Olympics. The government pays much attention to the protection of the environment and the' balance of nature while constructing the buildings for the Olympics. Also, people in the community have planted lots of trees .t~ beautify their surroundings. What's more, some families have changed the taps and lights to save water and electricity.
We students should take action to reduce the pollution and contribute to the Green Olympics, too. For instance,we may try to save some paper by writing on both sides and use reusable things instead of things which can be used only once.
As you can see,the color green gives the Beijing Olympic Games a deeper meaning: protecting the environment, preserving the resources and keeping the balance of nature.
I think the Green Olympics bud will grow in every citizen,s heart and it will surely turn out sweet in 2008!
Hope to see you then!
Best,
Jieyu
