Mary Allen was my best friend---like the sister I had ever had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, and horseback riding.
When I was 13, my family moved away. Mary and I dept in touch through letters (there was no e-mail, even no telephone at that time), and we saw each other on special occasions---like my weeding and Mary’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back stamped “Address Unknown”. I had no idea how to find Mary. I
thought I had lost touch with my best friend for ever.
Nevertheless, over the years, I thought of Mary often. I wanted to share with her stories of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sorrow when my brother and mother died. There was an empty lace in my heart that only a friend like Mary could fill.
One day I was reading the newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked a lot like Mary and whose last name was Wagman—Mary’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagman,” I thought, but I wrote to her anyway.
She called as soon as she got the letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly. “Mary Allen Wagman is my mother.” I was wild with joy when hearing this!
Minutes later, I heard a voice that I recognized immediately, even after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s life.
Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there is one thing that Mary and I know for sure: we won’t lose each other again!

To an outsider, Qinqiang Opera may sound harsh and
exaggerative (夸张的). But many people from Northwest
China just can’t live without it. “In my hometown, when a
baby is born, the family holds a dinner party and invites a
Qinqiang troupe to perform. When a person dies, the family also invites a Qinqiang troupe to perform at the funeral. Qinqiang is what we hear first and last in this world,” says Liu Xiang, a 32-year-old accountant from Shanxi.
Chang Zhimo, a 57-year-old engineer from Gansu, believes the opera transmits positive morals generation by generation from ancient times till modern times. “Babies sing along with adults and learn such lessons as ‘good will be rewarded with good and evil with evil’ from Qinqiang,” Chang says Yun Shizhong, a 62-year-old retired librarian from Qinghai Province, believes the musical form appeals to ordinary people. “Qinqiang is about the life of the poor, and it is performed in their own way,” Yun says. “It provides them an opportunity to release their depressive feelings. When a character in Qinqiang Opera is sad, he would beat his chest and howl.” Liu, Yun and Chang all believed something was missing from their lives after they moved to Beijing until they discovered the Great Qin Opera Youth Society of Beijing. Founded in 2004, the society is the only Qinqiang organization in the capital. The society is made up of about 40 members who came from Northwest China and work in various fields in Beijing. Aside from its elderly band members, most of the singers are in their 20s and 30s.
In 2003, a group of Qinqiang fans met through the China Qinqiang Net website (www. qinqiang. com) and came up with the idea of forming a Qinqiang troupe in Beijing. And on November 7, 2004,
the Great Qin Opera Youth Society of Beijing was founded. Since then, the members have been studying and practicing Qinqiang every Sunday without taking a day off. And rather than taking a break over the May Day and National Day golden weeks, they instead met twice a week.
Yun came to Beijing to live with his daughter after retirement. A lover of Qinqiang since his childhood, he did not have much time to be up to it when working in Qinhai. To enrich Yun’s life in Beijing, his daughter found the Great Qin Opera Youth Society on the Internet.
46.By saying “many people from Northwest China just can’t live without it”, the author means __.

B.they are native to Northwest China
C.Qinqiang Opera is native to Northwest China
D.Qinqiang Opera is the best

B.It was the Digital Age development of the Internet that brought Qinqiang fans together

China’s consumer inflation(通货膨胀) jumped to its highest level in 11 years in November 2007 due to rising food prices, official figures showed on Tuesday, adding to pressure for a sixth interest rate hike (increase) last year. The key inflation indicator, the Consumer Price Index(指数), jumped 6.9 percent from two years earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement on its website. The central bank should raise the interest rate to make the real rate positive, said Zuo Xiaolei, chief economist of Galaxy Securities. At that time, China’s one-year saving interest rate stood at 3.87 percent, well below the inflation rate, indicating a loss of purchasing power for depositors. Zuo suggested a rise of 54 basis points of the interest rate to control consumers’ inflation expectation. A high expectation might lead to rush on goods, thus further pushing up prices. “The latest figure indicates the inflation pressure is speeding up,” NBS chief economist Yao Jin gyuan said.
Food prices remain the key driving forces behind the rise in November 2007, jumping 18.2 percent. Among food items, pork saw the biggest price increases, followed by a 38.8 percent rise in poultry products. Non-food items went up 1.4 percent. Adding to the price pressure, the Producer Price Index, which measures inflation at the wholesale level, jumped 4.6 percent in November 2007, the biggest monthly increase in more than two years. The CPI had hit a decade high of 6.5 percent in August 2007, before easing to 6.2 percent in September and rebounding to 6.5 percent in October. Zuo expected the price pressure to continue this year. “The CPI growth in 2008 might be 4 to 5 percent, as least for the first quarter due to the Spring Festival,” he said.
In the face of rising living costs, the country’s top leaders had decided to adopt a “tight” monetary policy, the first shift from a “prudent” one in 10 years. During the weekend, the central bank announced a one percent hike in the bank reserve ratio to 14.5 percent, the highest level since 1984. That was the 10th increase last year.
51.The best title of the passage is _____________.
A.The Consumer Price Index jumped 6.9 percent
B..Interest rate jumped to its highest level due to rising food prices
C.The CPI growth in 2008 might be 4 to 5 percent
D.The reasons of consumer inflation
52.The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means ____________.
A.interest rate was higher than the inflation rate
B.the more you save in the bank, the more purchasing power you will lose
C.the more you save in the bank, the less purchasing power you will lose
D.depositors could get much from the high interest rate
53. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A.The central bank should lower the interest rate to make the real rate positive
B.Among food items, steak saw the biggest price increases
C.The price pressure will probably continue this year
D.The CPI had hit a decade high of 6.5 in October 2007
54.What causes the rapid rise of Consumer Price Index?
A.China’s consumer inflation B.the rise of food prices
C.the low interest rate D.the tight monetary policy
55. We can infer from the passage that ______________.
A.it will be easier to borrow money from the bank this year
B.people will lead a richer life this year
C.people can buy more products using the same money this year
D.it will be more difficult to borrow money from the bank this year

阅读下面摘自China Daily的一则信息,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Centenarian Cao Zuozheng will be disappointed if she learns that her application to be a torchbearer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been turned down.
Last week, the 103-year-old Beijinger, as the only candidate from her residential community, was recommended to a higher authority in Beijing’s Dongcheng District.
Her whole family had kept their fingers crossed that Cao could become the oldest of the 21,880 torchbearers selected across the world.
“We appreciate Cao’s wish. But in reality, she won’t be a torchbearer due to her health condition,” Li Hua, director of Jingshan sub-district office, told China Daily.
According to Li, the office has received eight recommendations, but only one of these can be passed to a higher selection body.
She refused to reveal any details about how they made the decision, except for saying “the one we have finally chosen is a Beij ing model worker”.
Xiao Xinhua, the youngest of Cao’s four children, felt sad at hearing the news.
However, she didn’t dare inform Cao as “it will be a shock to someone who has such a great passion for the Games”.
Xiao argued her mother has no health problems.
The 103-year-old started exercising in 2004 to get fit enough to be a torchbearer.
“If she were not healthy enough, how could we put her at risk by applying for the position?” she asked.
“I personally believe that one centenarian torchbearer is more meaningful than 100 model workers.”
She said she would try to speak to the Dongcheng District Torch Relay Centre to see if there was any chance of realizing her mother’s dream.
