When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go to face the music.”, it doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It’s something far less pleasant, like being called in by your teacher to explain why you did this or that, and why you did not do this or that. Sour music, indeed, has to be faced. The phrase to face the music is familiar to every American, young and old. It’s at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?
The first information comes from the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go stage. After they got their cue to go on, they often said, it is time to face the music. And that is exactly what
they did face the orchestra(交响乐团) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines, he had to go out. So, to face the music came to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection (检阅) by their leader. The soldiers worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment ( 装备)clean shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Here are two stories from different parts of the world. They seem strange but, believe it or not, they re all true!
John Lee was an Englishman who refused to be hanged! In 1884 the police said Lee had killed an old woman who he used to work with. There was nothing to show that Lee had killed the woman. Lee told the police he hadn't done it, but no one believed him and he was going to be hanged. On the day of the hanging, however, the door in the floor, through which Lee's body would fall, did not open. They tried three times but each time the door stayed closed, even though it had worked well the day before. In the end they sent Lee back to prison, where he lived for the next twenty-two years. At all times, John Lee said he hadn't killed the woman, and he believed it was the "hand of God" that had saved him from death by hanging.
The police in Venezuela (委内瑞拉) in South America followed a man home one night. He was the thief they wanted to catch. However, half of his house was standing in Venezuela and the other half was standing in Colombia (哥伦比亚). Venezuela's neighbor. When the police entered the house, the man ran upstairs to his bedroom, which was in Colombia, and called his lawyer (律师). The Venezuelan police were not allowed to enter Colombia so they could not enter the bedroom. They asked the police in Colombia to help. The Colombian police refused to help because the man's

In today’s world of modern science and medicine, a more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular-animal friendship.
It is now well-known that people with problems such as heart disease or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets lowers blood pressure and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them joy, entertainment and loving friendship.
Here is a case that shows the benefits of animals. John was a six-year-old mute. He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Net used to say, “Hi, John!” We all know parrots copy what they h ear. After a few visits, Sally began saying “Hi, John!” when John came into the room. Then, one day, John turned to the parrot and replied “Hi, Sally!” Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.
Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are used to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on and share with others, and even to teach them about animals.
If you want to know more about animal helper programmes, you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disabled or do a search under “animal therapy” on the Internet. You don’t have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in.

Butterflies are common all over the world, but butterflies in hotter countries are usually bigger and more brightly colored than those in coo1er countries, and there are more different kinds. Usually the male(雄性的)butterflies are more brightly colored than the females. The females have bigger and heavier bodies since they carry the eggs. The bright colors of the males help to attract the females, and the duller(较暗淡的)colors of the females make them less likely(可能的)to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.
Some butterflies have bright pattern colors on the upper surface of their wings that show when flying ,but when they rest on a tree or leaves , they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown marks which look like the tree or leaves. They are then difficult to be seen. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are c1osed,it looks exactly like a dead leaf. There are even marks that look like the holes in a dead leaf. When the butterfly is run after by a bird,it closes its wings and seems to have disappeared completely.
Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. The round marks have a useful function(功能).When the butterflies are resting, their wings are closed, and these marks can’t be seen. When a bird sees one,and begins to attack it,the butterfly will open its Wings. The bird thinks that it sees two eyes staring at it,frightened, and flies away.66.The female butterflies have bigger and heavier bodies than the males because _______

Special family bonds(纽带) are not created by big ship vacations or buying your child a new toy, bicycle or expensive clothes. Great families are formed by making time for each other, and by listening and caring. The good news is that it costs nothing to do these things.
Last weekend my kids and I were sitting outside the front steps of our house enjoying some sunshine after washing the car and playing with the neighbor's kids. As we sat there I had an idea that I thought would be fun.
“Anne, Liz,usually on Wednesday you come home from school for lunch. What about having a picnic in the park instead?” I asked. Both Anne and Liz lit up and smiled. “Yeah, Daddy! Then we'd even have more time to play in the school yard after!” they shouted.
So that's our little plan today for a simple Wednesday. I hope it will become one more of a huge collection of special family moments, moments when we make time for each other and do something special together.
A picnic in the park is something that works for us. My kids go to school close to the house and I work for myself in my study. I'm not saying that you should do exactly the same thing. It might not fit into your family situation. But something will fit, and it's up to you to find out what those things are and do them. Then keep doing them. Find special things that you can do with your kids. Make it a habit. You'll love the results. When your kids are older, they won't remember the iPad you bought them, or the 22nd stuffed animal for their collection. They will remember the time you spent with them.
71.What would the writer most probably ask parents to do?
A.Take big ship vacations with their kids.
B.Do small but special things with their kids.
C.Spend as little money as possible on their kids.
D.Give their kids new toys and expensive clothes.
72.When the writer suggested going on a picnic in the park, his daughters were ________. A.disappointed B.worried C.excited D.calm
73.What do we know about the writer?
A.He works far from home. B.He works for himself at home.
C.He often has lunch in a restaurant. D.He hardly cooks for his daughters.
74.What is the writer's purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain why listening and caring are important.
B.To advise that parents spend less money on their kids.
C.To prove that he gets on well with his daughters.
D.To tell parents how to form special bonds with their kids.
75.In which section of a newspaper would you probably read this passage?
