文章主要介绍了加勒比海的雷东达岛在当地环保组织的努力下,它现在已经恢复了原来的状态的原因和现状等。

15. For many years, the Caribbean island of Redonda was a bare (光秃秃的) rock with very little wildlife on it. Thanks to local environmental groups, it has now returned to its former state and was recently named a protected area by the government.
Redonda was once a peaceful place for wildlife. In the 17th century, people set foot on the island for the first time and found that guano (海鸟粪) produced by seabirds was useful to help farm crops grow. Humans began to mine the guano, and with the people came goats and black rats—invasive (入侵的) species.
Although humans eventually stopped collecting guano and left the island, the goats and rats stayed behind. They ate many of the island’s plants and preyed on other species, eventually leaving Redonda a plantless landscape. Without plants, birds began to fly away from there and some of the soil broke into pieces and then into the sea.
In 2016, conservationists started a project to help the island and its wildlife recover. They began by removing the invasive species. Within months, the island’s plants began to grow back on their own. As the environment gradually became healthier, species that were native to the island began to appear again.
The new protected area, the Redonda Ecosystem Reserve, includes the island itself plus the sea around it, including seagrass field and a coral reef. Conservation groups will ensure that the island is protected from other invasive species, and strict rules about fishing in the area will be put in place. 1. What can we learn about the island Redonda now?
A.It is full of strange rocks.B.It isn’t peaceful again.
C.It is a protected place.D.It has little wildlife.
2. What do the underlined words “preyed on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

3. What is the text mainly about?
A.Living in harmony with seabirds.B.Rules to protect the environment.
C.The reasons for protecting plants.D.One island’s unusual comeback.

讲述作者作为志愿者帮助老人的经历,让他找到了一种新的生活体验方式。

16. In spring 2015, after 39 years with Columbia Pictures, I retired and found myself with lots of free time to spare.
I decided to use that time to volunteer. While tutoring with the adult literacy program at my local library, an advertising flyer for a neighborhood group called Westchester Villages caught my eye. Its main job is about matching aging neighbors with local volunteers who help them in a number of different ways: Making short visits, being a walking partner, or driving to doctors’ appointments and the like.
I am happy to offer myself as a responsible person and a comfort to someone who is nervous about their appointment and concerned about getting there safely on time. I’ m usually available to stay with the person I’m driving during their visit and accompany them back to my car for the ride home. These drives also can be ideal times for relaxing conversation. I’ve had many discussions with them, discovered many common interests, and heard numerous extended stories of past travels and family histories.
I often begin rides by comforting a nervous neighbor by calmly saying, “I know where we’re going, the most direct route, and the best place to park. Y ou’re in good hands with me.” These driving experiences also have afforded me opportunities for reflection. I’ve come to feel united with the neighbors I have come to know, and a more eager awareness of the aging process we all share. In living through so much time with them, I realize I’m going through the same stages.
A final irony (讽刺) for this movie lover is that I no longer need to go to a darkened theatre and gaze at a big screen in search of high drama. Whether it’s a World War II-era family story or anxiety about current events or good news from a doctor, I experience all from a definitely front row seat.
1. What did the author decide to do during his free time?
A.Work as a librarian.B.Give rides for elderly people.
C.Making short visits to sick people.D.Play matches with aging neighbors.
2. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Creative and competent.B.Talented and warm-hearted.
C.Devoted and considerate.D.Ambitious and hard-working.
3. What might the author’s driving experiences remind him of?
A.His own aging process.B.A driver’s responsibility.
C.The value of conversations.D.Passengers’ words of comfort.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author has been anxious about his health.
B.The author has no interest in dramas anymore.
C.The author prefers watching movies from a front row.
D.The author has found a new way of experiencing life.

17. Have you considered how to choose your major in university, which is of great significance for your future career? Here is some practical
advice.
Initially, don’t choose a major merely based on money, otherwise mistakes will happen. 1 Can you see yourself investing the next 40 years in this career without getting bored? Actually choosing a major with high-paying career won’t guarantee you a high-paying job. It depends on position openings and your competitors when you graduate.
2 Y ou want to pick something that interests you, but you need to be sure you won’t get sick of it as time progresses.
3 A hobby is a
pursuit outside one’s regular occupation for relaxation while passion comforts you and drives you crazy at the same time. It isn’t relaxing. It inserts itself into your life. When you choose to study your hobby and build your life around it, it can lose its appeal and won’t be relaxing.
Thirdly, never choose a major by feeling instead of research. Being interested in a major isn’t enough. Researching the field will ensure you to choose a right major. If you know someone in the field, ask them for some information. Besides, consider the entire journey you’ll pursue—the coursework, the major demands, the school time you’ll need, and the available job prospects. 4
Lastly, don’t always depend on your parents. 5 However, the choice is ultimately yours. If anyone wants to help you in choosing a major and you completely agree with their opinions, then go with it. But if you want your future to go in any other direction, speak up. The only way to get the best outcome is to shape your own future.
A.Next, a hobby is never meant to be your priority.
B.The opinions of your family aren’t something to ignore.
C.Besides, keep a balance between hobbies and relaxation.
D.Typically, people will confuse their hobbies with their passions.
E.You should also consider your passions, dislikes, and happiness.
F.Remember college is an investment of both your time and money.
G.If you’re passionate about a major after research, follow your heart.
