第二部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.
I wa lked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the car.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”
“Oh, you’re such a good man.” She said. When we go t into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(计价器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
At dawn, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked.
“Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

52. The taxi driver did not charge the old woman because he ______.
A. wanted to do her a favor

D. People should learn to appreciate others’ concern.

The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, and what sort of drinks y ou’ve had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.
In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if you are below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving had been affected by alcohol.
It takes about an hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking in the evening, you might find that your driving ability is still affected the next morning, or you could even find that you’re still over the legal limit. In addition, if you’ve had a few drinks at lunchtime, another one or two drinks in the early evening may well put you over the legal limit.
In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of movable posts and the less able they were to do it!
So the only way to be sure you’re safe is not to drink at all.
Alcohol is the major cause of road accidents. One in three of the drivers killed in road accidents have levels of alcohol which are over the legal limit, and road accidents after drinking are the biggest cause of death among young men. More than half of people stopped by the police to
take a breath analyzer test have a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit.
It is important to remember that driving after you’ve been drinking doesn’t just affect you. If you’re involved in an accident, it affects a lot of other people as well, not only the person you might kill or injure.
54. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Three standard drinks may cause some people to reach the legal limit.
B. There is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach the legal limit.
C. The legal limit for driving after drinking is 0.08 gram of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.
D. The amount of alcohol a person can drink before reaching legal limit is the same for different people.
55. We may infer that even a professional driver will find it hard to pass through a set of movable posts if he drinks ________.
A. heavily
B. little
C. every day
D. occasionally
56. This passage indicates that _________.
A. a driver who does not take any alcohol will not die in road accidents
B. those who drink must be killed
C. more young men die in drink-related accidents than in any other way
D. one in three of the drivers often drinks a lot
57. One of the writer’s purposes in writing the passage is to tell you that _________.
A. young men should never drive quickly
B. driving after drinking may put many lives at risk
C. safe drinking is impossible
D. the manner of drinking is meaningless
C
Although women lead healthier, longer lives, the cruel perception(观念) that they reach their sell-by date and become “old” sooner than men is widespread in the workplace, research shows.
A survey of more than 2,600 managers and personnel professionals showed that age discrimination is not only common in the workplace, but is full of inconsistencies(矛盾). Six in ten managers thought that they had suffered from age discrimination——usually because they were turned down for a job for being too old or too young. Yet more than a fifth admitted that they used age as a condition when they employ new workers.
Although the survey found widespread agreement that older workers were better than younger colleagues when it came to reliability, commitment, loyalty and customer service, these qualities were not necessarily considered to be worthy of advancement. More than half of respondents believed that workers between 30 and 39 were the most likely to be advanced in their company, with only 2 per cent citing (引证,举例)50-year-olds or above.
Dianah Worman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that there was
anecdotal(多轶事趣闻的)evidence that people were considered old at different ages in different sectors. “We heard of one man working in IT who said he was considered too old by the age of 28,” she said. “There was no evidence to suggest that older workers were less valuable to companies than younger workers, in fact the opposite was often true because older workers often brought experience.” she added.
The findings also suggested that the Government’s ideas on age in the workforce may also be out of step with reality.

C. the people who find work
D. the discussion about who is worth promoting
59. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?

D. The people in their thirties are easier to be promoted than those in their fifties.
60. The underlined word “sell-by date” in paragraph 1 probably refers to______.
A. the age when they retire

D. the date when they sell goods
61. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.
A. tell the government to employ older workers

In the age of reality television, success isn’t the only way to the public eye. Failure can also create fame, just like William Hung, 21, a native of Hong Kong.
Hung recently has made an agreement with US-based entertainment firms Koch Records and Fuse Music Network. They will publish a full-length record, titled “The True Idol” on April 6. The idol (偶像) is a civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkeley. He did a version (改写本) of Ricky Martin’s“She Bangs” on the television show “American Idol 3",
on January 27. The Fox TV singing contest searches for pop stars among ordinary people. In the case of Hung, however, his act was so bad that the judges cut him off in mid-act. Hung’s response? “I already gave my best, so I have no regrets at all.” That’s interesting, because any common person would have found plenty to regret: the off-key singing, the blue Hawaiian shirt worn with pants pulled up too high, the terrible dancing, the hips jerking (摇摆) to a beat that did not belong to the song, maybe not even to this planet. It was, by all accounts, bad.
But, it was this very bad act that sold well.
Marc Juris, president of Fuse, explained it this way: “Every one of us is happily guilty of singing our favorite song at the top of our lungs with complete freedom, completely off-key and completely unworried. That’s what William did and immediately won the hearts of America.”
Whatever it is, for the moment it’s big. Three websites devoted to Hung have gon e up on the Internet in the past few weeks. Versions of his performance have been remixed with hip hop and techno music and have made it to the top 10 request list at a Chicago radio station.
So, what does Hung think of this?
“There were all these people s aying things about me. A lot were saying I was very courageous and that I was great on the show, but some didn’t have much respect for me and some were kind of mean.”
Now he says he’s not so sure whether to distance himself from the glamour (魅力) or to accept it. Returning to normal hasn’t been easy.
66.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Sometimes an idol behaves quite foolishly.
B.Hung's performance attracted the public eye.
C.How an unsuccessful person became famous.
D.Success sometimes does not require hard work.
67.Hung was popular in America for all the following reasons EXCEPT ________
A.his shirt and pants B.his off-key singing
C.his jerking hips D.his excellent version
68.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.William Hung.B.Hung's bad performance.
C.Hung’s website.D.The public’s opinion.
69.Which of the following shows the correct order of what happened to Hung?
a.The entertainment firms made an agreement with Hung.
b.The judges cut Hung off in mid-act in the singing contest.
c.Hung became popular among Americans.
d.Hung gave a terrible performance though he tried his best.
e. Three websites put Hung’s funny performance on the Internet.
A.d, b, e, c, a B.a, c, d.b, e C.a, d, b, c, e D.d, b, a, e, c
70.Why was Hung able to win the hearts of America?
A.His success was based on luck rather than his own hard work. B.He attracted people’s attention and won wide praise in the contest. C.He was good-looking in his pants and shirt though he didn’t sing well. D.In the contest he did what every one of us is happy to do in daily life.
