Step 1 Brainstorming
Find out the causes of poverty and the possible solutions to the problem b y means of pair wo rk.

diseases give medical care and training
natural disasters improve local environment
local environment provide educational training
wrong policies and strategies donate food and money growing population develop renewable energy limited natural resources
Step 2 Sharing information
Work in groups of four and discuss the four pictures on page 1.
Picture 1
1.What is in the picture? (Children in hunger are given food.)
2.What can food aid do to help solve the problem of poverty? Food aid can help feed people who have no food.
3.Do you think food aid is a a short-term or long-term solution to the problem of poverty ?

1.What is the man doing in the picture?

Vegetables grown with mod ern technology.
2. What’re the advantages and disadvantages of modern agriculture?
We may feed more people with the modern agriculture and create new jobs, but on the other hand it may cause pollution.
3.Do you think developing agriculture with modern technology is a short-term or long-term solution to the problem of poverty?

1.What has happened to the village? ( It has become a city. )
2. Do you prefer living in the city or in the country? Why?
3. What problems may developing too fast cause?
Developing too fast might harm the natural environment. For example, many trees have been cut down in order to build factories, roads and bridges. Also, almost everything we do in our modern lives, be it cooking or traveling, requires the use of Earth’s natural resources, which we may run out of one day.

1.What do you think the things are used for?
These machines are used to generate electricity by using wind power.
2.What might happen to natural resources in a thousand years? The supplies of coal, oil and other nat ural resources might run out in a thousand years.
3.What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that comes from a source that will not run out. Solar, wind and hydroelectric or water energy are all sources of renewable energy that cou ld be used in the future.
Step 3: Discussion: Work in pairs and have a discussion about the questions below the pictures.
